Functional Transition In The Floral Receptacle Of The Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera): From Thermogenesis To Photosynthesis, R. E. Miller, J. R. Watling, Sharon A. Robinson
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The receptacle of the sacred lotus is the main source of heat during the thermogenic stage of floral development. Following anthesis, it enlarges, greens and becomes a fully functional photosynthetic organ. We investigated development of photosynthetic traits during this unusual functional transition. There were two distinct phases of pigment accumulation in receptacles. Lutein and photoprotective xanthophyll cycle pigments accumulated first with 64% and 95% of the maximum, respectively, present prior to anthesis. Lutein epoxide comprised 32% of total carotenoids in yellow receptacles, but declined with development. By contrast, more than 85% of maximum total chlorophyll, β-carotene and Rubisco were produced …

A transition in hemoglobin (Hb), involving partial unfolding and aggregation, has been shown previously by various biophysical methods. The correlation between the transition temperature and body temperature for Hb from different species, suggested that it might be significant for biological function. In order to focus on such biologically relevant human Hb dynamics, we studied the protein internal picosecond motions as a response to hydration, by elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering. Rates of fast diffusive motions were found to be significantly enhanced with increasing hydration from fully hydrated powder to concentrated Hb solution. In concentrated protein solution, the data revealed that …

The effect of the crystallinity and the grain texturing of CoPt hard layers on exchange coupled Fe/CoPt soft/hard magnetic systems was studied using gradient thickness multilayer thin films. We have studied the hard layer structures by transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, and characterized the exchange coupling interaction through magnetization loops obtained by the magneto-optical Kerr effect measurement. We found that exchange coupling strongly depends on the crystalline characteristics of the CoPt hard layer. There is correlation between the mixture of different grain orientations of the CoPt hard layer and coupling efficiency. In particular, interlayer coupling is enhanced when there …

Autonomic Trust Management In Dynamic Systems, Brent Lagesse
Autonomic Trust Management In Dynamic Systems, Brent Lagesse
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations
Research in pervasive computing is aimed at creating environments where users can seamlessly benefit from ubiquitous computing resources despite the complexity of the environment. Providing security in such systems is a difficult task since traditional security mechanisms often require significant user attention and do not scale well to large, mobile, and open environments. To combat this problem, distributed trust has been proposed to provide security in pervasive systems. While much research has been performed in the area, many vulnerabilities and insufficiencies still exist, especially in mobile ad-hoc systems that cannot support distributed trust mechanisms requiring pre-existing infrastructure and cooperation. Dynamic …

Attributes Selection And Package Design To Maximize Visibility Of Objects, Md Zahiduzzaman Miah
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations
In recent years, there has been significant interest in the development of ranking functions and efficient top-k retrieval algorithms to help users in ad-hoc search and retrieval in databases (e.g., buyers searching for products in a catalog). We introduce a complementary problem: how to guide a seller in selecting the best attributes of a new tuple (e.g., a new product) to highlight so that it stands out in the crowd of existing competitive products and is widely visible to the pool of potential buyers. For example, assume one wants to sell an iPod in e-commerce site, but the title allows …
Predicting Inter -Organizational Knowledge Satisfaction Through Knowledge Conversion And Task Characteristics In A Minority -Owned Business, Terrence L. Ward
Predicting Inter -Organizational Knowledge Satisfaction Through Knowledge Conversion And Task Characteristics In A Minority -Owned Business, Terrence L. Ward
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Knowledge management has been extensively studied from the single organization (intra-organizational) perspective for many years. Although the literature on intra-organizational knowledge is extensive, there still exist gaps in the literature with regards to knowledge being shared by multiple organizations (inter-organizational knowledge). Inter-organizational knowledge satisfaction is gained when the organizations successfully embody the knowledge gained via the cooperation and crystallizes that knowledge within the organization. The problem addressed in this study is the lack of a model for predicting inter-organizational knowledge satisfaction utilizing task characteristics and the knowledge conversion process. The purpose of the study was to predict inter-organizational knowledge satisfaction …

Climate Trends Of The North American Prairie Pothole Region 1906–2000, Bruce Millett, W. Carter Johnson, Glenn Guntenspergen
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) is unique to North America. Its millions of wetlands and abundant ecosystem goods and services are highly sensitive to wide variations of temperature and precipitation in time and space characteristic of a strongly continental climate. Precipitation and temperature gradients across the PPR are orthogonal to each other. Precipitation nearly triples from west to east from approximately 300 mm/year to 900 mm/year, while mean annual temperature ranges from approximately 1◦C in the north to nearly 10◦C in the south. Twentieth-century weather records for 18 PPR weather stations representing 6 ecoregions revealed several trends. The climate generally …
The 2-Ranks Of Hyperelliptic Curves With Extra Automorphisms, Darren B. Glass
The 2-Ranks Of Hyperelliptic Curves With Extra Automorphisms, Darren B. Glass
Math Faculty Publications
This paper examines the relationship between the automorphism group of a hyperelliptic curve defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic two and the 2-rank of the curve. In particular, we exploit the wild ramification to use the Deuring-Shafarevich formula in order to analyze the ramification of hyperelliptic curves that admit extra automorphisms and use this data to impose restrictions on the genera and 2-ranks of such curves. We also show how some of the techniques and results carry over to the case where our base field is of characteristic p > 2.

Learning, Participation And Local School Mathematics Practice, Cristina Frade, Konstantinos Tatsis
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This paper reports on a study whose aim was to examine students’ learning in terms of participation in collective mathematical discussions. Our basic theoretical assumptions are based on a combination of situated learning perspectives and a framework that links social and psychological approaches of mathematical activity and learning. The research was carried out in a Year-8 classroom (students were aged 12 to 13), and the mathematical subject under investigation was area measurement. Data are presented to illustrate possible correspondences between ‘signs’ of learning and ‘local’ changes of participation. We conclude by discussing some pedagogical implications resulting from the study.

A Longitudinal Study Of Student’S Representations For Division Of Fractions, Sylvia Bulgar
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The representations that students use as part of their mathematical problem solving can provide us with a window into their grasp of the concepts they are exploring and developing. In this paper, the author indicates how these representations can evolve over time and enrich the understanding of division of fractions, often thought to be the most difficult of elementary school mathematical topics. The results of this research suggest that when appropriate problems are provided for students, in a meaningful context, they can demonstrate understanding of division of fractions that is durable over time, and that they are able to flexibly …

How To Increase Mathematical Creativity- An Experiment, Kai Brunkalla
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Creativity is an integral part of mathematics. In this article I examine the increase in awareness of creativity in mathematics using Fröbel’s blocks in a college classroom. A majority of students found the introduction of the “gifts” of the founder of Kindergarten to a college geometry classroom enhancing their interest in mathematics. They judged the wooden blocks helpful in their understanding of geometry. The students showed increased awareness of creativity in mathematics.

Book X Of The Elements: Ordering Irrationals, Jade Roskam
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Book X from The Elements contains more than three times the number of propositions in any of the other Books of Euclid. With length as a factor, anyone attempting to understand Euclidean geometry may be hoping for a manageable subject matter, something comparable to Book VII’s investigation of number theory. They are instead faced with a dizzying array of new terminology aimed at the understanding of irrational magnitudes without a numerical analogue to aid understanding. The true beauty of Book X is seen in its systematic examination and labeling of irrational lines. This paper investigates the early theory of irrationals, …

The Impact Of Undergraduate Mathematics Courses On College Student’S Geometric Reasoning Stages, Nuh Aydin, Erdogan Halat
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The purpose of this study is to investigate possible effects of different college level mathematics courses on college students’ van Hiele levels of geometric understanding. Particularly, since logical reasoning is an important aspect of geometric understanding, it would be interesting to see whether there are differences in van Hiele levels of students who have taken non-geometry courses that emphasize or focus on logic and proofs (Category I) and those that don’t (Category II). We compared geometric reasoning stages of students from the two categories. One hundred and forty nine college students taking various courses from the two categories have been …

The results reveal that the majority of classroom teachers agreed that real life applications, processing skills, using concrete instructional manipulatives, and conceptual knowledge are very important in teaching children mathematics. Most of teachers participating in …
Room Temperature Fluorescence Spectroscopy As A Tool For The Forensic Trace Analysis Of Textile Fibers, Matthew Rex
Room Temperature Fluorescence Spectroscopy As A Tool For The Forensic Trace Analysis Of Textile Fibers, Matthew Rex
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trace textile fiber evidence is found at numerous crime scenes and plays an important role in linking a suspect to the respective scene. Several methods currently exist for the analysis of trace fiber evidence. Microscopy provides information regarding the fibers material, color and weave. For more detailed chemical analysis chromatographic methods are employed and for discrimination between dyes, liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is currently the method providing the most discrimination. These methods have primarily focused on the dyes used to color the fibers and have not investigated other components that can potentially discriminate among fibers. This dissertation …

Electron Transport In Single Molecule Magnet Transistors And Optical Lambda Transitions In The Nitrogen-Vacancy Center In Diamon, Gabriel Gonzalez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents some theoretical studies dealing with quantum interference effects in electron transport through single molecule magnet transistors and a study on optical non-conserving spin transitions in the Nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The thesis starts with a brief general introduction to the physics of quantum transport through single electron transistors. Afterwards, the main body of the thesis is divided into three studies: (i) In chapter (2) we describe the properties of single molecule magnets and the Berry phase interference present in this nanomagnets. We then propose a way to detect quantum interference experimentally in the current of a single …
Vectorpad: A Tool For Visualizing Vector Operations, Jared Bott
Vectorpad: A Tool For Visualizing Vector Operations, Jared Bott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Visualization of three-dimensional vector operations can be very helpful in understanding vector mathematics. However, creating these visualizations using traditional WIMP interfaces can be a troublesome exercise. In this thesis, we present VectorPad, a pen-based application for three-dimensional vector mathematics visualization. VectorPad allows users to define vectors and perform mathematical operations upon them through the recognition of handwritten mathematics. The VectorPad user interface consists of a sketching area, where the user can write vector definitions and other mathematics, and a 3D graph for visualization. After recognition, vectors are visualized dynamically on the graph, which can be manipulated by the user. A …
Dark Current Behavior In Dslr Cameras, Justin Charles Dunlap, Oleg Sostin, Ralf Widenhorn, Erik Bodegom
Dark Current Behavior In Dslr Cameras, Justin Charles Dunlap, Oleg Sostin, Ralf Widenhorn, Erik Bodegom
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are examined and their dark current behavior is presented. We examine the influence of varying temperature, exposure time, and gain setting on dark current. Dark current behavior unique to sensors within such cameras is observed. In particular, heat is trapped within the camera body resulting in higher internal temperatures and an increase in dark current after successive images. We look at the possibility of correcting for the dark current, based on previous work done for scientific grade imagers, where hot pixels are used as indicators for the entire chip?s dark current behavior. Standard methods of …

Nano-Structure Formation Driven By Local Protonation Of Polymer Thin Films, Carsten Maedler, Harald Graaf, Mingdi Yan, Andres H. La Rosa
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We report the creation of nano-structures via Dip Pen Nanolithography by locally exploiting the mechanical response of polymer thin films to an acidic environment. Protonation of cross linked poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) leads to a swelling of the polymer. We studied this process by using an AFM tip coated with a pH 4 buffer. Protons migrate through a water meniscus between tip and sample into the polymer matrix and interact with the nitrogen of the pyridyl group forming a pyridinium cation. The increase in film thickness, which is due to Coulomb repulsion between the charged centers, was investigated using Atomic Force Microscopy. …
