Multi-Site Photometry Of The Pulsating Herbig Ae Star V346 Ori, S Bernabei, T D. Oswalt
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications
Context. The study of pulsation in pre-main-sequence intermediate-mass stars represents an important tool for deriving information about fundamental stellar parameters and internal structure, as well as testing theoretical models. Interest in this class of variable stars has increased significantly during the last decade and about 30 members are presently known in the literature. Aims. After constructing the frequency spectrum of oscillations in V346 Ori, we apply asteroseismic tools to these data to estimate the intrinsic parameters (mass, luminosity, effective temperature) of V346 Ori and obtain information about its internal structure. Methods. CCD time-series photometry in the Johnson V filter was …

We examine the distribution and propagation of energy in the plasma sheet and lobes using observations and simulations for three substorms. The substorms occurred on 9 March 1995, 10 December 1996, and 27 August 2001 and have been simulated using the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry magneto-hydrodynamic code. All three events occur over North America and show a clear substorm current wedge over the ground magnetometer chains of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The three simulations show the thinning of the plasma sheet during the growth phase of the event and an increase in the relative amount of thermal energy due to the compression of …

We present results from our analysis of a sample of DA white dwarfs having effective temperature below 25,000 K observed with the FUSE satellite with the goals of better understanding the origin of metals detected in the atmosphere of these stars. When possible, we combine the FUSE spectra with the IUE spectra and determine atmospheric parameters by fitting the Lyman line profiles. In general we find a good agreement with published values based on fits of the Balmer series. We observe that the continuum in the blue wing of the Lyman α line profile is generally lower in comparison with …

We report the observation at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of suppression of back-to-back correlations in the direct photon+jet channel in Au+Au relative to p+p collisions. Two-particle correlations of direct photon triggers with associated hadrons are obtained by statistical subtraction of the decay photon-hadron (γ-h) background. The initial momentum of the away-side parton is tightly constrained, because the parton-photon pair exactly balance in momentum at leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, making such correlations a powerful probe of the in-medium parton energy loss. The away-side nuclear suppression factor, IAA, in central Au+Au collisions, is 0.32±0.12stat±0.09syst for hadrons of 3

Genetically Engineered Repetitive Polypeptides : Design, Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications, Natalya I. Topilina
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This work is dedicated to the investigation of protein folding with the emphasis on the aggregation and amyloid fibrils formation. The focus of the research is to elucidate the relationship between polypeptide chain sequence and folding/aggregation properties. For this purpose, i) libraries of the de novo macromolecular repetitive β-sheet forming polypeptides were designed, and ii) the strategy for their rapid creation was developed. The strategy enables retention of a basic polypeptide core, yet allowing variations in the repetitive sequence, degree of polymerization and distribution of specific amino acids. The polypeptides were expressed in E. coli, purified, and characterized by various …
Raman Spectroscopy Of Body Fluids : A Nondestructive Identification Technique For Forensic Applications, Kelly Virkler
Raman Spectroscopy Of Body Fluids : A Nondestructive Identification Technique For Forensic Applications, Kelly Virkler
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The analysis of body fluid evidence during forensic investigations is a complicated process, yet it is a critical step in determining the key facts of a crime. There is no doubt that DNA analysis is an extremely useful tool that can identify a suspect or victim, but crime scene investigators must first locate and identify potential body fluid stains that can be collected for DNA analysis. Current screening tests are destructive to the sample and can give false positive results, so a nondestructive technique such as Raman spectroscopy, that can possibly confirm the presence of a particular fluid, could lend …

Geochemical Fingerprinting Of Volcanic Airfall Deposits : A Tool In Stratigraphic Correlation, Soumava Adhya
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Chemical fingerprints of volcanic airfall deposits obtained from high-precision electron microprobe analysis of glass and phenocrysts phases provide geochemical correlations with temporal precision unattainable by other methods. In this research electron microprobe analysis (EMA) techniques, to fingerprint chemically and correlate fresh and altered volcanic airfall deposits, have been utilized to test the value of this tool for future research on stratigraphic correlation. The following samples were chosen from within a variety of sedimentary rocks widely separated spatially and temporally:

Observations Of The Transient Characteristics Of The Hydrological Balance, Matthew Czikowsky
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The impact of transient input events on the hydrological balance components are studied over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. First, interception evaporation and energy-balance changes during and following precipitation events are examined at the site spatial and event temporal scale. Second, the hydrological response to spatial and seasonal changes in precipitation and evapotranspiration due to land cover changes are examined on the small-to-large watershed scale, covering the event to seasonal time scales.

Hypertension is recognized as one of the serious chronic diseases of humankind and as a major risk factor for death from heart attack and stroke. The cause of essential hypertension is poorly understood. We have investigated the relationship of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and organochlorine pesticide exposure with hypertension and blood pressure in organochlorines exposed residents of Anniston, Alabama.
Machine Learned Melody Matching Using Strictly Relative Musical Abstractions, Michael Joseph Kolta
Machine Learned Melody Matching Using Strictly Relative Musical Abstractions, Michael Joseph Kolta
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
We implement and evaluate a machine learning approach to improve systems for searching a database of music via melodic sample. We explore symbolic and aural input queries and test our prototypes with extensive user surveys. Our main contribution is to combine the following four elements. First is to create a unique musical abstraction that accounts for both pitch and rhythm in a relative manner. Second, our system allows for approximate matching of imperfect queries via the utilization of the Smith-Waterman algorithm that was originally designed for approximate matching of molecular subsequences, such as DNA samples. Third is to design our …
Application And Extension Of Glauber Ising-Spin Dynamics In The Context Of A Single Chain Magnet System, Ryan Tucker Kristensen
Application And Extension Of Glauber Ising-Spin Dynamics In The Context Of A Single Chain Magnet System, Ryan Tucker Kristensen
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The Glauber Ising-spin dynamic with a local equilibrium approximation is applied to infinite and finite one-dimensional (anti-)ferromagnetic Ising chains with classic nearest neighbor interactions. The application of the Glauber dynamic and local equilibrium approximation is then extended to the one-dimensional ferrimagnetic chain with nearest neighbor interactions. Time dependant behavior and equilibrium states of the one-dimensional ferrimagnetic chain are then discussed in terms of the single chain magnet referred to as CoPhOMe, whose behavior empirical data to date suggest is consistent with a one-dimensional Ising ferrimagnet.

Physical Properties Of Cytochromes C : 1. Role Of Cytochrome C' As A Nitric Oxide Carrier, 2. Folding Of Cytochrome C, Byunghoon Lee
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Cytochrome c’ binds and transfers endogenous NO in the denitrifying variant of Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.3 and the NO bound ferrous heme that forms 5-coordinate resembles regulatory site in soluble guanylate cyclase. The Arg127 is close to the 5-coordiate NO bound heme of the cytochrome c’. The mutant (R127A) that was overexpressed in a cytochrome c’ knock-out R. sphaeroides 2.4.3 provided the opportunity to research the functional role of Arg127 in the redox potential and NO binding. The mutant (R127A) showed lower redox potential and lower NO binding free energy than wild type. ERP and ENDOR showed that the mutant had …
Biomonitoring For Exposure To Trace Elements In Utero : Analysis Of The Human Placenta, Pamela Catherine Kruger
Biomonitoring For Exposure To Trace Elements In Utero : Analysis Of The Human Placenta, Pamela Catherine Kruger
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The placenta forms in eutherian mammals, and is responsible for the nutrition of the developing fetus. However, maternal exposure to environmental pollutants both before and during pregnancy may result in the passage of toxins through the placental barrier and into fetal tissues. The placenta is the only organ derived from both maternal and fetal tissues, and establishes a link between the fetus and the environmental exposures of the mother. The analysis of placentae for the presence of environmental pollutants offers the possibility of exposure measurements in both the mother and the developing fetus. Specifically, trace element determination in human placentae …
Bootstrapping Events And Relations From Text, Ting Liu
Bootstrapping Events And Relations From Text, Ting Liu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Information Extraction (IE) is a technique for automatically extracting structured data from text documents. One of the key analytical tasks is extraction of important and relevant information from textual sources. While information is plentiful and readily available, from the Internet, news services, media, etc., extracting the critical nuggets that matter to business or to national security is a cognitively demanding and time consuming task. Intelligence and business analysts spend many hours poring over endless streams of text documents pulling out reference to entities of interest (people, locations, organizations) as well as their relationships as reported in text. Such extracted "information …

Variance-Mean Relationships To Analyze Large Survey Data With Application To Health Expenditure Data, Wenli Luo
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
A great deal of work has been done in cost analysis in the last several decades. However, relatively little has been done to learn how efficiently to address the relationship between the variance and mean of the response distribution and how this will affect the choice of an appropriate generalized linear model.
Nanocomposite Thin Films Of Au Nanoparticles Embedded In Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia For Plasmonic-Based Harsh Environment Gas Detection, Phillip Henry Rogers
Nanocomposite Thin Films Of Au Nanoparticles Embedded In Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia For Plasmonic-Based Harsh Environment Gas Detection, Phillip Henry Rogers
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Increased health concerns due to the emission of gases linked to the production of tropospheric ozone by petroleum based fuel burning engines has resulted in the codification of more stringent emissions regulations domestically. Emissions regulations on commercial jetliners are one of the areas to be met with stricter standards. Currently there is not a sensing technology that can detect the emissions gases in the exhaust stream of a jet turbine engine with lower detection limits that meet these standards.

Doubly Curved Crystal Optics For Monochromatic And Diffraction Enhanced X-Ray Imaging, Santosh Kumar Sahoo
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In radiographic imaging the contrast can be enhanced with the use of monochromatic radiation compared to conventional broadband source. Monochromatic beam radiation can be produced with conventional sources by diffraction off of flat monochromator crystals, but this produces a low monochromatic intensity for imaging.
