Theoretical And Computational Studies Of Dissociative Recombination Of H3+ With Low Kinetic Energy Electrons: Time-Independent A, Samantha Santos Jan 2009

Theoretical And Computational Studies Of Dissociative Recombination Of H3+ With Low Kinetic Energy Electrons: Time-Independent A, Samantha Santos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dissociative recombination of molecular ions by collisions with electrons is a reactive collision, in which the electronic kinetic energy is transferred to the excitation of the molecule that, then, dissociates. The goals of this dissertation was (1) to improve existing approaches in theory of DR of triatomic ions in the time-independent framework developed in recent years by Kokoouline and Greene, and (2) to develop a time-dependent theoretical framework for DR treatment based on quantum defect theory. The theoretical method developed by Kokoouline and Greene is based on multichannel quantum defect theory and accounts for the major non-Born-Oppenheimer Jahn-Teller interaction between …

Demographic, Behavioral And Perceptual Comparisons Of U.S Visitor Experience With Group Package Tours And Free Independent Travel To China, Mark A. Bonn, Howook "Sean" Chang, Jerome Agrusta, H. Leslie Furr, Woo Gon Kim Jan 2009

Demographic, Behavioral And Perceptual Comparisons Of U.S Visitor Experience With Group Package Tours And Free Independent Travel To China, Mark A. Bonn, Howook "Sean" Chang, Jerome Agrusta, H. Leslie Furr, Woo Gon Kim

Hospitality Review

U.S. visitor demand for the China travel experience is anticipated to rise significantly through 2105, causing the Chinese government to employ 100 million service providers over the next six years and raising concern about service delivery and perceptions of the on-site China experience. In an effort to better understand these issues concerning U.S. visitors, this study investigated two specific types of U.S. travelers to China: Group Package Tour (GPT) visitors and Free Independent Travel (FIT) visitors. Results indicated that GPT visitors were more likely to be older and have higher household income than FIT visitors. Four trip-related characteristics of GPT …

A Versatile Preparation Of Geländer-Type P-Terphenyls From A Readily Available Diacetylenic Precursor, Matthew J. Modjewski, Sergey V. Lindeman, Rajendra Rathore Jan 2009

A Versatile Preparation Of Geländer-Type P-Terphenyls From A Readily Available Diacetylenic Precursor, Matthew J. Modjewski, Sergey V. Lindeman, Rajendra Rathore

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A series of doubly bridged p-terphenyls (4) have been synthesized utilizing a facile three-step synthesis starting from the readily available diacetylenic precursor (1) in excellent overall yields, and their structures were confirmed by 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy as well as by X-ray crystallography. The racemization barrier between the meso and chiral atropisomers of one of the derivatives of 4 was found to be ∼12 kcal/mol by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy. The versatility of the protocol developed herein was further demonstrated by the preparation of a quadruply bridged penta-p-phenylene derivative.

Molecular Motion And Performance Enhancement Of Borazan Fluorescent Dyes, Tyler James Morin, Sergey Lindeman, James R. Gardinier

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The preparation of three 2,6-dipyrazolyl-4-X-anilines, H(pz2AnX) (X = p-CF3, Cl, tBu) using CuI-catalyzed amination is described. Subsequent reactions of H(pz2AnX) with triphenylboron proceeds with benzene elimination to give the corresponding Ph2B(pz2AnX) compounds in high yields. The Ph2B(pz2AnX) are more highly emissive in the solid state than the previously reported BORAZAN fluorophores, Ph2B(pzAnX), their monopyrazolyl counterparts. As with the Ph2B(pzAnX), the color of emission in Ph2B(pz2 …

Octamethoxydibenzochrysene: Isolation And X-Ray Crystallographic Characterization Of A Twisted Polyaromatic Cation Radical, Tushar Navale, Linyi Zhai, Sergey V. Lindeman, Rajendra Rathore

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The isolation and X-ray crystal structure determination of octamethoxydibenzochrysene (3) cation radical together with DFT calculations allow us to delineate evidence that the complex structural changes (i.e. elongation and shortening of various bonds) in a polyaromatic hydrocarbon can be predicted based on the positioning of the largest bonding and antibonding character of the HOMO.

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

We have synthesized three simple and versatile terphenyl crowns (TC) receptors containing ethereal canopies that direct a potassium cation for efficient cation–π interactions as established by 1H NMR spectroscopy and by isolation and X-ray crystallography of their K+ salts.

Mutation Of H63 And Its Catalytic Affect On The Methionine Aminopeptidase From Escherichia Coli, Sanghamitra Mitra, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz Jan 2009

Mutation Of H63 And Its Catalytic Affect On The Methionine Aminopeptidase From Escherichia Coli, Sanghamitra Mitra, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

In order to gain insight into the mechanistic role of a flexible exterior loop near the active site, made up of Y62, H63, G64, and Y65, that has been proposed to play an important role in substrate binding and recognition in the methionyl aminopeptidase from Escherichia coli (EcMetAP-I), the H63A enzyme was prepared. Mutation of H63 to alanine does not affect the ability of the enzyme to bind divalent metal ions. The specific activity of H63A EcMetAP-I was determined using four different substrates of varying lengths, namely, l-Met-p-NA, MAS, MGMM and MSSHRWDW. For the smallest/shortest …

Efficient Dehydrogenation Of Amines And Carbonyl Compounds Catalyzed By A Tetranuclear Ruthenium-Μ-Oxo-Μ-Hydroxo-Hydride Complex, Chae S. Yi, Do W. Lee Jan 2009

Efficient Dehydrogenation Of Amines And Carbonyl Compounds Catalyzed By A Tetranuclear Ruthenium-Μ-Oxo-Μ-Hydroxo-Hydride Complex, Chae S. Yi, Do W. Lee

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The tetranuclear ruthenium-μ-oxo-μ-hydroxo-hydride complex {[(PCy3)(CO)RuH]44-O)(μ3-OH)(μ2-OH)} (1) was found to be a highly effective catalyst for the transfer dehydrogenation of amines and carbonyl compounds. For example, the initial turnover rate of the dehydrogenation of 2-methylindoline was measured to be 1.9 s−1 with a TON of 7950 after 1 h at 200 °C. The extensive H/D scrambling patterns observed from the dehydrogenation reaction of indoline-N-d1 and indoline-α-d2 suggest a monohydride mechanistic pathway with the C−H bond activation rate-limiting step.

13c-Methyl Isocyanide As An Nmr Probe For Cytochrome P450 Active Site, Christopher R Mccullough, Phani Kumar Pullela, Sang-Choul Im, Lucy Waskell, Daniel S. Sem Jan 2009

13c-Methyl Isocyanide As An Nmr Probe For Cytochrome P450 Active Site, Christopher R Mccullough, Phani Kumar Pullela, Sang-Choul Im, Lucy Waskell, Daniel S. Sem

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The cytochromes P450 (CYPs) play a central role in many biologically important oxidation reactions, including the metabolism of drugs and other xenobiotic compounds. Because they are often assayed as both drug targets and anti-targets, any tools that provide: (a) confirmation of active site binding and (b) structural data, would be of great utility, especially if data could be obtained in reasonably high throughput. To this end, we have developed an analog of the promiscuous heme ligand, cyanide, with a 13CH3-reporter attached. This 13C-methyl isocyanide ligand binds to bacterial (P450cam) and membrane-bound mammalian (CYP2B4) CYPs. It can be …

Lebesgue-Stieltjes Measure On Time Scales, Asli Deni̇z, Ünal Ufuktepe Jan 2009

Lebesgue-Stieltjes Measure On Time Scales, Asli Deni̇z, Ünal Ufuktepe

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The theory of time scales was introduced by Stefan Hilger in his Ph. D. thesis in 1988, supervised by Bernd Auldbach, in order to unify continuous and discrete analysis [5]. Measure theory on time scales was first constructed by Guseinov [4], then further studies were made by Guseinov-Bohner [1], Cabada-Vivero [2] and Rzezuchowski [6]. In this article, we adapt the concept of Lebesgue-Stieltjes measure to time scales. We define Lebesgue-Stieltjes \Delta and \nabla-measures and by using these measures, we define an integral adapted to time scales, specifically Lebesgue-Stieltjes \Delta-integral. We also establish the relation between Lebesgue-Stieltjes measure and Lebesgue-Stieltjes \Delta-measure, …

Korovkin Type Error Estimates For Positive Linear Operators Involving Some Special Functions, Ogün Doğru, Esra Erkuş-Duman Jan 2009

Korovkin Type Error Estimates For Positive Linear Operators Involving Some Special Functions, Ogün Doğru, Esra Erkuş-Duman

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In the present paper, we introduce a new sequence of linear positive operators with the help of generating functions. We obtain some Korovkin type approximation properties for these operators and compute rates of convergence by means of the first and second order modulus of continuities and Peetre´s K-functional. In order to obtain explicit expressions for the first and second moment of our operators, we obtain a functional differential equation including our operators. Furthermore, we deal with a modification of our operators converging to integral of function f on the interval (0,1).

On \Tau-Lifting Modules And \Tau-Semiperfect Modules, Mustafa Alkan Jan 2009

On \Tau-Lifting Modules And \Tau-Semiperfect Modules, Mustafa Alkan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Motivated by [1], we study on \tau-lifting modules (rings) and \tau-semiperfect modules (rings) for a preradical \tau and give some equivalent conditions. We prove that; i) if M is a projective \tau-lifting module with \tau(M) \subseteq \delta(M), then M has the finite exchange property; ii) if R is a left hereditary ring and \tau is a left exact preradical, then every \tau-semiperfect module is \tau--lifting; iii) R is \tau-lifting if and only if every finitely generated free module is \tau-lifting if and only if every finitely generated projective module is \tau-lifting; iv) if \tau (R) \subseteq \delta (R), then R …

Approximation By Certain Linear Operators Preserving X^2, Lucyna Rempulska, Karolina Tomczak Jan 2009

Approximation By Certain Linear Operators Preserving X^2, Lucyna Rempulska, Karolina Tomczak

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We investigate certain positive linear operators L_n preserving the functions e_k (x)=x^k, k=0, 1, and modified operators L_n^* which preserve e_0 and e_2. We show that the error of approximation of f by L_n^* (f) is smaller than for L_n(f).

Computer-Aided Reasoning About Knowledge And Justifications, Natalia Novak Jan 2009

Computer-Aided Reasoning About Knowledge And Justifications, Natalia Novak

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In the first Chapter we compare two well-known type-based computer frameworks for computer aided logical reasoning and verification: MetaPRL and Coq. In particular, we implement in MetaPRL the Calculus of Inductive Constructions which is the theoretical base for Coq. This work has shown the common points of MetaPRL and Coq, and revealed their principal methodological differences. A possible application of this work is a possibility to perform re-validation in MetaPRL of the existing library of Coq proofs which could help to build more trust in the latter.

Chapter 2 is the main contribution of the dissertation. It contains the description …

Biodegradation Of Fuel Oxygenates In Northeastern United States Aquifers With An Analysis Of Underground Storage Tank Leaks, Gordon Hinshalwood Jan 2009

Biodegradation Of Fuel Oxygenates In Northeastern United States Aquifers With An Analysis Of Underground Storage Tank Leaks, Gordon Hinshalwood

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

During the past decade the application of monitored natural attenuation has become one of the predominant technologies used in the remediation of gasoline spills impacting subsurface soils and groundwater. The success of this method has depended, for the most part, on the biodegradation of those gasoline constituents that dissolve into groundwater and transport with the groundwater most readily.

One of the most mobile components of gasoline formulations during the past 20 years has been methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), which has traditionally been viewed in both the scientific and the regulatory communities as relatively recalcitrant to biodegradation. However, cases of …

Deeply virtual Compton scattering, γ*p→γp has been measured in e+p collisions at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 61.1 pb-1. Cross sections are presented as a function of the photon virtuality, Q2, and photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, W, for a wide region of the phase space, Q2 > 1.5GeV2 and 40 < W < 170GeV. A subsample of events in which the scattered proton is measured in the leading proton spectrometer, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31.3 pb-1, is used for the first direct measurement of the differential cross section as a function of t, where t is the square of the four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. © SISSA 2009.
