Carbon nanosheets are a novel two-dimensional nanostructure made up of 2-20 graphene atomic planes oriented with their in-plane axis perpendicular to the growth substrate. Previous efforts in developing nanosheet technology have focused on the characterization of the system and their development as an electron source due to the high atomic enhancement factor (beta) and low turn on field. In recent years, a great deal of progress has been made in understanding the ionization processes that result from the interaction of an intense laser pulse with multielectron atoms. However, due to experimental limitations, the effect of the laser field's spatial dependence on strong-field processes has rarely been investigated. Presented in this work is a theoretical analysis of this spatial dependence including a proposal for an experimentally observable result of the phenomenon. The Louisiana cane sugar industry is moving toward a vertically integrated arrangement where raw sugar producers will have an interest in refining. In the sugar refining process, raw sugar is affined to remove ~50 % of the color. The new refinery that will be built in Louisiana, however, will not include affining stations. To reduce costs of refining, either affining stations will need to be installed at each mill or new technologies that provide equivalent color reduction (~50% or ~750 IU) need to be implemented. We study a discrete prototype of anomalous scattering associated with the interaction of guided modes of a periodic scatterer and plane waves incident upon the scatterer. The transmission anomalies arise because of the non-robustness of a guided mode, a mode that exists only at a specific frequency and wave number pair. The simplicity of the discrete prototype allows one to make certain explicit calculations and proofs, and to examine details of important resonant phenomena of the open wave guides. Petroleum platforms number greater than 4,200 in the Gulf of Mexico and Caranx crysos (blue runner) is one of the most abundant fish species around these platforms. Forty-six blue runner were tagged with acoustical transmitters in August 2005, though the study was terminated prematurely due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Katrina. Nineteen blue runner were tagged in September 2006 and tracked for up to two months. Blue runner exhibited limited site fidelity around the platforms in 2005. Holographic recording in thick photopolymer layers is important for application in holographic data storage, volume holographic filters and correlators. Here, the characteristics of acrylamidebased photopolymer layers having thickness from 250 μm to 1-mm were studied. For each layer thickness samples with three different values of absorbance were studied. By measuring both the first order diffraction efficiency growth of holographically recorded gratings and studying the diffraction patterns obtained, the influence of scattering on the diffraction efficiency of thick volume holographic gratings was analyzed. The optical properties of acrylamide-based photopolymer doped with pure silica MFI-type zeolites are studied by refractometric and spectrophotometric means. Dynamic Light Scattering and Transmission Electron Microscopy are used for zeolite characterization and laser refractometry and White Light Interferometric profilometry are used for surface characterization of the composites. Refractive indices and absorption coefficients of composites are determined from their transmittance and reflectance spectra. The calculated dispersion curves are further used for deriving the zeolites refractive index and porosity and the latter compared to the values of total pore volume obtained from N2-sorption measurements. In the present work the optical and holographic characteristics of acrylamide-based photopolymer layers are studied. For the first time the refractive index change of a liquid acrylamide photopolymer due to exposure at 532 nm is obtained using a critical angle laser micro-refractometer. The 30 mm thick solid photopolymer films are prepared by casting on glass substrates. Bragg holographic gratings with spatial frequencies of 710 mm-1, 1050 mm-1 and 1600 mm-1 are recorded using a diode laser operating at 532 nm wavelength. The late stage of the North East Atlantic (NEA) spring bloom was investigated during June 2005 along a transect section from 45 to 66° N between 15 and 20° W in order to characterize the contribution of siliceous and calcareous phytoplankton groups and describe their distribution in relation to environmental factors. We measured several biogeochemical parameters such as nutrients, surface trace metals, algal pigments, biogenic silica (BSi), particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) or calcium carbonate, particulate organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus (POC, PON and POP, respectively), as well as transparent exopolymer particles (TEP). ABSTRACT: The North Atlantic spring bloom is one of the largest annual biological events in the ocean, and is characterized by dominance transitions from siliceous (diatoms) to calcareous (coccolithophores) algal groups. Microbial rhodopsins are membrane proteins that utilize a retinal chromophore to harvest sunlight for energetic and photosensory functions. Recently, a group of novel rhodopsin sequences named ‘actinorhodopsins’ (ActRs) was hypothesized to exist among uncultured planktonic Actinobacteria. ActRs were discovered by mining metagenomic data obtained during the Venter Institute’s Global Ocean Sampling expedition, from a hypersaline lagoon, two estuaries and a freshwater lake. On the basis of these findings, and many studies that show Actinobacteria are common inhabitants of lakes, we predicted that ActR genes would likely be present in other freshwater habitats and among the genomes of cultivated Actinobacteria …
Numerical Modeling Of Eutrophication Dynamics In The Shallow Coastal Ecosystem: A Case Study In The Maryland And Virginia Coastal Bays, Taiping Wang

Shallow coastal bays and lagoons (mean depths <2-3 meters) are important buffer zones and links between terrestrial and deep marine ecosystems. They are inherently vulnerable to eutrophication, and are normally dominated by benthic primary producers such as seagrass, benthic micro- and macroalgae. There is an urgent need for quantitative models that are specifically designed for studying eutrophication dynamics in shallow coastal ecosystems. In this study, a hydrodynamic and water quality modeling system consisting of the hydrodynamic model UnTRIM and the water quality model CE-QUAL-ICM was applied to a representative shallow coastal bay ecosystem, the Maryland and Virginia Coastal Bays (MVCBs). A high-resolution unstructured model grid was generated to resolve the complex geometry. to address the important role played by benthic macroalgae, a benthic macroalgal module, which assimilated macroalgal kinetics from literature and recent laboratory studies, was incorporated into the water quality model framework. The module includes two representative macroalgal species, Ulva lactuca and Gracilaria vermiculophylla , common in the MVCBs, and employs the internal nutrient-limited growth kinetics proposed by Droop. The numerical modeling system has been calibrated against a comprehensive field monitoring data collected by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in the MVCBs. The data include water level, current velocity, salinity, and major water quality variables, such as chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients. The calibrated hydrodynamic model was used to calculate the physical transport time scales. The model estimated flushing time for the entire system is on the order of 2-3 months, which are much longer than typical time scales required by most biological processes. In addition, the local residence time is found to be extremely variable throughout the system. Depending on locations, the local residence time can vary from 0 to more than 200 days. The calculated transport time scales were further compared with spatial water quality distributions in the system. The comparisons demonstrate that physical circulations could substantially modulate biological processes in the system. By using the Droop equation, the benthic macroalgae's unique property, the so-called luxury uptake, was satisfactorily captured. Furthermore, the characteristic boom-and-bust life cycle of benthic macroalgae was qualitatively simulated using a box model. The expanded water quality model that includes the benthic macroalgal module reproduced both temporal and spatial distributions of observed benthic macroalgae and major water quality variables reasonably well in the MVCBs. The model results indicate that benthic macroalgae are highly important in regulating ecosystem metabolism in areas where they are abundant. Moreover, spring phytoplankton bloom was substantially suppressed when benthic macroalgae were present. The incorporation of a benthic macroalgal module also improved the model's predictive capability in simulating dissolved oxygen in shallow ecosystems affected by benthic macroalgae. In terms of nutrient budget, the model estimated that benthic macroalgae retain approximately 10% of annual nonpoint source nitrogen inputs from the watershed based on the simulation of year 2004. This is lower than that contributed by benthic microalgae reported in other shallow coastal bays such as the Lynnhaven Bay. It is suspected that the restricted distribution of benthic macroalgae in the MVCBs limited their role from the whole bay perspective. With the incorporation of a benthic macroalgae module, the overall water quality model prediction capability is improved.

The research presented in this dissertation includes the novel phytochemical analysis of root extracts of Cassia alata L. and the anti-angiogenic evaluation of rhein in the treatment of breast cancer. To conduct these studies a combination of analytical techniques were employed, namely, chromatographic, spectroscopic, and bioanalytical. The first part of this research is focused on the phytochemical analysis of C. alata root extracts. This work was done in order to deepen our molecular level understanding of how soil organic matter (SOM) is assembled in a whole soil and to provide further insight on the effect of SOM assembly on the uptake and release of hydrophobic organic compounds. Various techniques, including ultraviolet absorbance, fluorescence, and total carbon analysis, demonstrate that hydration/solvation of SOM is kinetically controlled. "In this thesis, we consider oscillation and nonoscillation of q-difference equations, i.e., equations that arise while studying q-calculus. In particular, we prove an extension of Kneser’s theorem on q-calculus to cases in which no conclusion can be drawn by applying Kneser’s theorem. In order to accomplish this, we establish a change of variables which yields, when applied iteratively, a sequence of comparison functions. Ambient ionization allows the analysis of materials in their native environment without sample preparation by creating ions outside the mass spectrometer. The goal of this research was to develop new ambient ionization techniques for application to solids, liquids and particles under ambient conditions. Samples to be analyzed were directly merged with an electrospray of droplets, and then ionized and detected by a mass spectrometer. An ion trap mass spectrometer was modified with a nanoelectrospray source and configured for three experiments: merged electrospray ionization of dry particles, merged electrospray ionization of combustion products, and infrared laser desorption/ablation using electrospray for post-ionization. …

Establishing the relationships between recruitment indices and estimates of adult abundance using fishery-independent data continues to remain one of the principal challenges faced by fisheries scientists due to the lack of concurrent monitoring programs designed to target different life stages of the same species. In Chesapeake Bay, however, multiple, fishery-independent surveys currently monitor the relative abundance of YOY and adult fishes. Using the available data from these surveys, the relationships between estimates of relative abundance for young-of-year and adults of striped bass (Morone saxatilis), weakfish (Cynoscion regalis), and Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) were examined. The phytoplankton of the Ross Sea have been intensively studied during the last decade, as opposed to the Amundsen Sea, where virtually nothing is known about phytoplankton taxonomy and distribution. Blooms in the Ross Sea are usually composed of diatoms and the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis antarctica; diatoms are often dominant in strongly stratified waters during the summer, whereas P. antarctica usually dominates in less stratified waters in the south-central polynya during spring. Classroom lecturing has been improving with the advances in information technology. The Active Lecture, an advanced lecturing system, is developed as part of this project. The Active Lecture system allows the students to be more interactive during a lecture process. The Active Lecture system has features that are helpful to both the instructors and the students before, during, and after the lectures. The Active Lecture system is deployed and is made available for use in a classroom. The usage of the Active Lecture system is compared with the usage of Ubiquitous Presenter in a classroom setting.

Chunking algorithms play an important role in data de-duplication systems. The Basic Sliding Window (BSW) algorithm is the first prototype of the content-based chunking algorithm which can handle most types of data. The Two Thresholds Two Divisors (TTTD) algorithm was proposed to improve the BSW algorithm in terms of controlling the variations of the chunk-size. In this project, we investigate and compare the BSW algorithm and TTTD algorithm from different factors by a series of systematic experiments.
