Satellite Estimation Of Chlorophyll-A Concentration Using The Red And Nir Bands Of Meris—The Azov Sea Case Study, Wesley J. Moses, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Sergey Berdnikov, Vasiliy Povazhnyy

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We present here the results of calibrating and validating a three-band model and, its special case, a two-band model, which use MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) reflectances in the red and near-infrared spectral regions for estimating chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration in inland, estuarine, and coastal turbid productive waters. During four data collection campaigns in 2008 and one campaign in 2009 in the Taganrog Bay and the Azov Sea, Russia, water samples were collected, and concentrations of chl-a and total suspended solids were measured in the laboratory. The data collected in 2008 were used for model calibration, and the …

Estimation Of Chlorophyll-A Concentration In Case Ii Waters Using Modis And Meris Data—Successes And Challenges, Wesley Moses, Anatoly Gitelson, Sergey Berdnikov, Vasiliy Povazhnyi

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We present and discuss here the results of our work using MODIS (moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer) and MERIS (medium resolution imaging spectrometer) satellite data to estimate the concentration of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) in reservoirs of the Dnieper River and the Sea of Azov, which are typical case II waters, i.e., turbid and productive. Our objective was to test the potential of satellite remote sensing as a tool for near-real-time monitoring of chl-a distribution in these water bodies. We tested the performance of a recently developed three-band model, and its special case, a two-band model, which use the reflectance at red and …

Net And Acoustic Examination Of Bathypelagic Nekton On The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, C. I. H. Anderson, J. Horne, Tracey Sutton Oct 2009

Net And Acoustic Examination Of Bathypelagic Nekton On The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, C. I. H. Anderson, J. Horne, Tracey Sutton

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Spatial distributions of organisms play a key role in facilitating trophic interactions, which influence pelagic ecosystem structure and function. This study combines discrete net trawl sampling with continuous acoustic measurements to investigate the distribution of bathypelagic (1000- 3000 m depth) nekton biomass along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge from Iceland to the Azores. Two, previously unknown, acoustic scattering layers (ASLs) were observed using 18 kHz echosounder data. The first extended approximately 200 m from 2000 m depth and was ubiquitous wherever bottom depth allowed. The second, found within the 1500-2000 m depth stratum, only occurred south of the Sub-Polar Front. Backscatter from …

Preliminary Results On Feeding Ecology Of Stomiiforme Fishes Of The Northern Mid-Atlantic, Vanda Carmo, Odd Aksel Bergstad, Tone Falkenhaug, Gui Menezes, Tracey Sutton

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Few previous studies have focused specifically on the role of the mid-ocean ridges in the ecology of pelagic fishes. This study targets on a dominant nekton component of the mid- Atlantic mesopelagic ichthyofauna - the Stomiiformes - and their food resources including zooplankton and other nekton. Its main goal is to characterize the diets of several species of these midwater fish towards understanding the trophic pathways of the deep-pelagic nekton of the northern MAR. The study material was provided by the G. O. Sars 2004 Expedition under the International project MAR-ECO. On the lab fish were dissected and diet items …

Survival And Productivity Of A Low-Density Black Bear Population In Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, Roger A. Baldwin, Louis C. Bender Oct 2009

Survival And Productivity Of A Low-Density Black Bear Population In Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, Roger A. Baldwin, Louis C. Bender

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) has supported a small black bear (Ursus americanus) population of low productivity. Increased visitor use of the park and development around its periphery could lead to a reduction in population viability of RMNP’s bear population or could increase the potential for human–bear conflict. Therefore, we investigated contemporary survival and productivity parameters for RMNP’s black bear population from 2003 to 2006 and compared these values to historic levels (1984–1991) and population means throughout the western United States to clarify the current status of RMNP’s bear population. The contemporary black bear population showed signs of …

Molt Migration By Giant Canada Geese In Eastern South Dakota, Charles D. Dieter, Bobby J. Anderson Oct 2009

Molt Migration By Giant Canada Geese In Eastern South Dakota, Charles D. Dieter, Bobby J. Anderson

Human–Wildlife Interactions

We captured giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) in 7 counties in eastern South Dakota during the summer molting period, 2000–2003. We attached very high frequency (VHF) transmitters to 150 adult female geese with brood patches, and leg bands to 3,839 geese. We documented molt migrations using VHF telemetry and indirect band recovery at locations north of South Dakota. Telemetry of radio-collared female geese during the breeding season indicated that 56% of nonbreeders, 81% of unsuccessful breeders, and 19% of successful female breeders embarked on a molt migration. Five of 34 geese that underwent molt migrations moved to …

Developing Bird-Strike Risk Assessment Models For Open-Water Restorations, Justin D. Hart, Alison Colyer, John R. Allan Oct 2009

Developing Bird-Strike Risk Assessment Models For Open-Water Restorations, Justin D. Hart, Alison Colyer, John R. Allan

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Mineral extraction sites that are restored to open water can increase bird-strike risk if they are planned near airports. This can generate conflict between the minerals industry and safeguarding authorities. To help resolve this potential conflict, it would be useful to predict how new restorations affect local water-bird populations so that mineral deposits can be exploited and restored in safeguarded zones without compromising flight safety. Bird abundances and movements at new restorations can be estimated with statistical models that use the environmental characteristics of restoration schemes as predictor variables. These models can improve guidance in safeguarding, provided that they comprise …

Nanoscale Domain Patterns In Ultrathin Polymer Ferroelectric Films, Pankaj Sharma, Timothy J. Reece, Daniel W. Wu, Vladimir M. Fridkin, Stephen Ducharme, Alexei Gruverman Oct 2009

Nanoscale Domain Patterns In Ultrathin Polymer Ferroelectric Films, Pankaj Sharma, Timothy J. Reece, Daniel W. Wu, Vladimir M. Fridkin, Stephen Ducharme, Alexei Gruverman

Stephen Ducharme Publications

High-resolution studies of domain configurations in Langmuir–Blodgett films of ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), P(VDF-TrFE), have been carried out by means of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Changes in film thickness and morphology cause significant variations in polarization patterns. In continuous films and nanomesas with relatively low thickness/grain aspect ratio (<1/10), the relationship between the average domain size and thickness follows the Kittel law. Nanomesas with high aspect ratio (>1/5) exhibit significant deviations from this law, suggesting additional surface-energy-related mechanisms affecting the domain patterns. Polarization reversal within a single crystallite has been demonstrated and local switching parameters (coercive voltage and remnant piezoresponse) have been measured by monitoring the local hysteresis loops. Reliable control of polarization at the sub-grain level demonstrates …

Robust Quantization Of A Molecular Motor Motion In A Stochastic Environment, Vladimir Y. Chernyak, Nikolai A. Sinitsyn

Chemistry Faculty Research Publications

We explore quantization of the response of a molecular motor to periodic modulation of control parameters. We formulate the pumping-quantization theorem (PQT) that identifies the conditions for robust integer quantized behavior of a periodically driven molecular machine. Implication of PQT on experiments with catenane molecules are discussed. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We are grateful to M. Chertkov, J. R. Klein, and J. Horowitz for useful discussions. This material is based upon work supported by NSF under Grant Nos. CHE-0808910 and ECCS-0925618.

We report on the results of spectral fits made to data obtained from a 168 ks Suzaku observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Fairall 9. The source is clearly detected out to 30 keV. The observed spectrum is fairly simple; it is well described by a power law with soft excess and disk reflection. A broad iron line is detected, and easily separated from distinct narrow components owing to the resolution of the CCDs in the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS). The broad line is revealed to be asymmetric, consistent with a disk origin. We fit the XIS and Hard X-ray …

Wavelet-Based Bayesian Estimation Of Partially Linear Regression Models With Long Memory Errors, Kyungduk Ko, Leming Qu, Marina Vannucci Oct 2009

Wavelet-Based Bayesian Estimation Of Partially Linear Regression Models With Long Memory Errors, Kyungduk Ko, Leming Qu, Marina Vannucci

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we focus on partially linear regression models with long memory errors, and propose a wavelet-based Bayesian procedure that allows the simultaneous estimation of the model parameters and the nonparametric part of the model. Employing discrete wavelet transforms is crucial in order to simplify the dense variance-covariance matrix of the long memory error. We achieve a fully Bayesian inference by adopting a Metropolis algorithm within a Gibbs sampler. We evaluate the performances of the proposed method on simulated data. In addition, we present an application to Northern hemisphere temperature data, a benchmark in the long memory literature.

Error And Stability Estimates For Surface-Divergence Free Rbf Interpolants On The Sphere, Edward J. Fuselier, Francis J. Narcowich, Joseph D. Ward, Grady Wright

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recently, a new class of surface-divergence free radial basis function interpolants has been developed for surfaces in R3. In this paper, several approximation results for this class of interpolants will be derived in the case of the sphere, S2. In particular, Sobolev-type error estimates are obtained, as well as optimal stability estimates for the associated interpolation matrices. In addition, a Bernstein estimate and an inverse theorem are also derived. Numerical validation of the theoretical results is also given.

Costs Of Pelleting To Enhance The Logistics Of Distillers Grains Shipping, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Elif Kongar Oct 2009

Costs Of Pelleting To Enhance The Logistics Of Distillers Grains Shipping, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Elif Kongar

Kurt A. Rosentrater

Biofuels, especially corn-based ethanol, can help meet some of the increasing demand for transportation fuels. Currently, the most heavily utilized substrate is corn grain, which is readily converted into ethanol at a relatively low cost compared to other biomass sources. The production of ethanol in the U.S. has been dramatically increasing during the last several years; so too has the quantity of manufacturing coproducts. These nonfermentable residues are most often dried and sold as distillers dried grains with solubles – DDGS. Even though these materials are used to feed livestock in local markets, as the size of the industry continues …

West Florida Shelf Mean Circulation Observed With Long-Term Moorings, Robert H. Weisberg, Yonggang Liu, Dennis A. Mayer Oct 2009

West Florida Shelf Mean Circulation Observed With Long-Term Moorings, Robert H. Weisberg, Yonggang Liu, Dennis A. Mayer

Yonggang Liu

The mean circulation on the West Florida Continental Shelf is described using long-term current measurements. Bounded by the Florida peninsula to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west, the West Florida Continental Shelf mean flow is oriented approximately along-isobath and southward. The mean velocity vectors veer systematically with depth, shoreward over shallow water and seaward over deeper water. This polarization change implies that the mean flow is upwelling over shallow water and downwelling seaward from the inner shelf. Such a well-organized, three-dimensional coastal ocean circulation pattern, revealed by an unprecedented set of observations, and explained on the …

Comparison Of Feature Classification Algorithm For Activity Recognition Based On Accelerometer And Heart Rate Data, Dominic Maguire, Richard Frisby

9th. IT & T Conference

This paper describes a project to compare two feature classification algorithms used in activity recognition in relation to accelerometer and heart rate data. Data was collected from six male and female subjects using a single tri-axial accelerometer and heart monitor attached to each subject’s dominant thigh. Subjects carried out eight activities and the data was labelled semi-automatically. Features (mean, standard deviation, energy, correlation and mean heart rate) were extracted from the data using a window of 256 (3.4 seconds) and an overlap of 50%. Two classifers, k-NN and J48, were evaluated for activity recognition with 10-fold validation with k-NN (k …

Universal Design, Education And Technology, Ciaran O'Leary, Damian Gordon

9th. IT & T Conference

Universal Design is an approach to design which insists upon the consideration of users with diverse levels of ability. Rather than representing a specialist approach to design, it is recognised that Universal Design results in a better design for all. Furthermore, by isolating design for disability as an independent topic in education, or ignoring it altogether, educators create an exclusionist perception of the role and place of individuals with disability in modern society. Modern education programmes which teach design skills are enhanced in quality by mainstreaming Universal Design as a core topic, permeating all that surrounds it. This paper describes …

Voshm: A Velocity Optimized Seamless Handover Mechanism For Wimax Networks, Chi Ma, Enda Fallon, Yansong Qiao

9th. IT & T Conference

For seamless handover in heterogeneous wireless networks, service continuity and minimal handover disruption time are the primary requirements. The emerging Media Independent Handover (MIH) standard proposes to address these requirements through the introduction of link performance prediction features. In particular the MIH Event Service introduces a Link_Going_Down event which utilizes L2 performance characteristics to trigger predictive events. While the MIH standard proposes a framework by which L2 events can be communicated to the upper layer, it does provide detail on the performance characteristics which trigger these events. In this paper, we design a MIH based Velocity Optimized Seamless Handover Mechanism …

9th. IT & T Conference

Over the recent years, there has been an extraordinary increase in the demand for real-time multimedia and infotainment services in vehicular domain. The availability of multimedia services over mobile phones and the tremendous success of low-cost Laptops have given rise to the expectation of providing multimedia services while on the move in vehicles. However, there are significant technological challenges in establishing continuous high-rate communication between the Internet/Multimedia server and the vehicles. The main problem is that it is difficult to provide direct communication between the server and the vehicles especially when the vehicles are moving at a very high speed. …
