Topics In Random Knots And R-Matrices From Frobenius Algebras, Enver Karadayi
Topics In Random Knots And R-Matrices From Frobenius Algebras, Enver Karadayi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we study two areas of interest in knot theory: Random knots in the unit cube, and the Yang-Baxter solutions constructed from Frobenius algebras.
The study of random knots can be thought of as a model of DNA strings situated in confinement. A random knot with n vertices is a polygonal loop formed by selecting n distinct points in the unit cube, for a positive integer n, and connecting these points by straight line segments successively, such that the last point selected is joined with the first one. We present a step by step description of our algorithm …

Imagery is presented along with calibration and testing procedures of several airborne imaging systems. The low altitude airborne systems include a cooled hyperspectral imaging system with 1024 spectral channels and 1375 spatial pixels. The hyperspectral imaging system is collocated with a full resolution high definition video recorder for simultaneous HD video imagery, 12.3 megapixel digital images for multispectral "sharpening" the hyperspectral imagery, or large frame 9 inch film cameras yield scanned aerial imagery with approximately 2200 by 2200 pixel multispectral imagery. Two high spectral (252 channels) and radiometric sensitivity solid state spectrographs are used for collecting upwelling radiance (sub-meter pixels) …
Activation Of The Innate Immune Response By The Alzheimer's Amyloid Beta Protein Via Toll-Like Receptors, Udan Lourdes Maria
Activation Of The Innate Immune Response By The Alzheimer's Amyloid Beta Protein Via Toll-Like Receptors, Udan Lourdes Maria
Dissertations
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the most common form of neurodegenerative disease characterized by the generation and deposition of amyloid beta plaques and the formation of neurofibrillary tangles. A wealth of data now demonstrate that inflammation is a prominent feature in AD pathology and a potential therapeutic target for the treatment and prevention of the disease. The emergence of evidence linking amyloid beta protein (Aβ), the primary component of senile plaques, to inflammation has led to new insights into understanding AD pathology. Aβ, a protein fragment resulting from cleavage of human amyloid precursor protein (APP), primarily exists in two forms: a …

The Metadata Challenge: Promoting Discovery, Access, And Usability For Online Books, John Mark Ockerbloom
John Mark Ockerbloom
With millions of books, serials, and other documents now digitized, rich troves of information and culture can now be made available to anyone in the world with an Internet connection. But these riches are worthless if they cannot be found, accessed, and effectively used by the readers who need them. The key to unlock these treasures is metadata. Networked computing enables techniques for making metadata more effective than ever; yet in practice, online collections all too often either do not have or do not take full advantage of the best metadata they could use.
There is much ongoing work harnessing …

Recent years have witnessed tremendous progress in numerical relativity and an ever improving performance of ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors. In preparation for Advanced LIGO and a new era in gravitational wave astronomy, the numerical relativity and gravitational wave data analysis communities are collaborating to ascertain the most useful role for numerical relativity waveforms in the detection and characterization of binary black hole coalescences. In this paper, we explore the detectability of equal mass, merging black hole binaries with precessing spins and total mass M_T in [80,350]Msol, using numerical relativity waveforms and template-less search algorithms designed for gravitational wave bursts. …
Pre-Service Physics Teachers And Physics Education Research, David Rosengrant
Pre-Service Physics Teachers And Physics Education Research, David Rosengrant
Faculty Articles
Training pre-service teachers requires, among other things, content knowledge, pedagogical skills and pedagogical content knowledge. Teacher preparation programs have little, if any spare time to add more courses/activities to their program. However, I argue in this paper that we, as educators, must enhance the amount of physics education research in our pre-service physics teacher training programs. In this study, I analyze the results of two different types of exposure to physics education research (PER) from two different groups of pre-service physics teachers in our masters of arts and teaching program. The preliminary results show, for example that the PER helped …

Synthesis Of An Ortho-Triazacyclophane: N,N',N''-Trimethyltribenzo-1,4,7-Triazacyclononatriene, Andria M. Panagopoulos, Matthias Zeller, Daniel P. Becker
Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works
N,N',N''-Trimethyltribenzo-1,4,7-triazacyclononatriene has been synthesized via sequential palladium-catalyzed Buchwald-Hartwig N-arylation reactions affording the 9-membered triaza o-cyclophane in 35% overall yield. An X-ray crystal structure shows the new cyclophane to have a C(2)-symmetric saddle conformation, as compared to the crown conformation exhibited by the related carbocyclic cyclotriveratrylene (CTV).
A Characterization Of Weingarten Surfaces In Hyperbolic 3-Space, Nikos Georgiou, Brendan Guilfoyle
A Characterization Of Weingarten Surfaces In Hyperbolic 3-Space, Nikos Georgiou, Brendan Guilfoyle
Preprints
We study 2-dimensional submanifolds of the space L(H3) of oriented geodesics of hyperbolic 3-space, endowed with the canonical neutral Kähler structure. Such a surface is Lagrangian if there exists a surface in H3 orthogonal to the geodesics of Σ. We prove that the induced metric on a Lagrangian surface in L(H3) has zero Gauss curvature if the orthogonal surfaces in H3 are Weingarten: the eigenvalues of the second fundamental form are functionally related. We then classify the totally null surfaces in L(H3) and recover the well-known holomorphic constructions of flat and CMC 1 surfaces in H3.
Modeling-Free Bounds On Nonrenormalizable Isotropic Lorentz And Cpt Violation In Qed, Brett David Altschul
Modeling-Free Bounds On Nonrenormalizable Isotropic Lorentz And Cpt Violation In Qed, Brett David Altschul
Faculty Publications
The strongest bounds on some forms of Lorentz and CPT violation come from astrophysical data, and placing such bounds may require understanding and modeling distant sources of radiation. However, it is also desirable to have bounds that do not rely on these kinds of detailed models. Bounds that do not rely on any modeling of astrophysical objects may be derived both from laboratory experiments and certain kinds of astrophysical observations. The strongest such bounds on isotropic modifications of electron, positron, and photon dispersion relations of the form E^2 = p^2 + m^ 2 + epsilon p^3 come from data on …

Database Concepts In A Virtual World, Janet L. Ochs
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This project explored the use of a 3-D virtual world in an introductory database course to reduce the amount of time required to learn database concepts. A Second Life 3-D model was built to clarify database concepts and students used the model to create a Microsoft Access inventory database. Thereafter, the students provided feedback by answering a voluntary survey. Eighty two percent of the students surveyed agreed that the 3-D model clarified terms such as records, tables, primary keys and relationships. Seventy five percent of the students believed that the model reduced the amount of time required to learn these …

Understanding, Modeling And Valuing Ecosystem Services, Robert Costanza
Understanding, Modeling And Valuing Ecosystem Services, Robert Costanza
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
Ecosystem services (ES) are the direct and indirect contributions of ecosystems (in combination with other inputs) to human well-being. An ES-based approach can assess the trade-offs inherent in managing humans embedded in ecological systems. Evaluating trade-offs requires both an understanding of the biophysical magnitudes of ES changes that result from human actions, as well as an understanding of their impact on human well-being, broadly conceived. This talk discusses the state of the art of ES assessment, valuation, and modeling, including the potential of integrated ecological economic modeling. Valuation is about assessing trade-offs – not necessarily about trades (exchanges) in markets …

Accurate Description Of The Optical Response Of A Multilayered Spherical System In The Long Wavelength Approximation, H. Y. Chung, G. Y. Guo, Hai-Pang Chiang, D. P. Tsai, P.T. Leung
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The optical response of a multilayered spherical system of unlimited number of layers (a “matryoshka”) in the long wavelength limit can be accounted for from the knowledge of the static multipole polarizability of the system to first-order accuracy. However, for systems of ultrasmall dimensions or systems with sizes not-too-small compared to the wavelength, this ordinary quasistatic long wavelength approximation (LWA) becomes inaccurate. Here we introduce two significant modifications of the LWA for such a nanomatryoshka in each of the two limits: the nonlocal optical response for ultrasmall systems (<10 >nm), and the “finite-wavelength corrections” for systems ∼100 nm. This is …10>
Deep Packet Inspection And Its Effects On Net Neutrality, Michael A. Derose
Deep Packet Inspection And Its Effects On Net Neutrality, Michael A. Derose
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Deep packet inspection (DPI) is becoming increasingly important as a means to classify and control Internet traffic based on the content, applications, and users. Rather than just using packet header information, Internet Service Providers are using DPI for traffic management, routing and security. But by being able to control traffic by content, a growing number of public policy makers and users fear ISPs may discriminately charge more for faster delivery of their data, slow down applications or even deny access. They cite such practices as endangering the principle of net neutrality; the premise that all data on the Internet should …
Exploring The Benefits Of Buying Industry Leading It Infrastructure In A Healthcare Setting, Frank Biondolillo
Exploring The Benefits Of Buying Industry Leading It Infrastructure In A Healthcare Setting, Frank Biondolillo
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
IT infrastructure leaders are under growing pressure to balance the demand for new and rapidly changing technologies in an era of fixed or declining IT budgets. They must buy wisely, make sure that every infrastructure dollar is spent wisely, and ensure it all fits into a preconceived plan that supports the organization's mission. This research looks at the IT literature, develops a qualitative research methodology and presents findings from a new study of IT infrastructure decision making in the healthcare industry. The findings show that healthcare technology leaders are building critical components of their infrastructure using the top two hardware …

Preventing Information Leakage From Indexing In The Cloud, Anna Squicciarini, Smitha Sundareswaran, Dan Lin
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Cloud computing enables highly scalable services to be easily consumed over the Internet on an as-needed basis. While cloud computing is expanding rapidly and used by many individuals and organizations internationally, data protection issues in the cloud have not been carefully addressed at current stage. Users' fear of confidential data (particularly financial and health data) leakage and loss of privacy in the cloud may become a significant barrier to the wide adoption of cloud services. in this paper, we explore a newly emerging problem of information leakage caused by indexing in the cloud. We design a three-tier data protection architecture …

Chelate-Assisted Oxidative Coupling Reaction Of Arylamides And Unactivated Alkenes: Mechanistic Evidence For Vinyl C–H Bond Activation Promoted By An Electrophilic Ruthenium-Hydride Catalyst, Ki Hyeok Kwon, Do W. Lee, Chae S. Yi
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
The cationic ruthenium hydride complex [(η6-C6H6)(PCy3)(CO)RuH]+BF4− was found to be a highly regioselective catalyst for the oxidative C−H coupling reaction of aryl-substituted amides and unactivated alkenes to give o-alkenylamide products. The kinetic and spectroscopic analyses support a mechanism involving a rapid vinyl C−H activation followed by a rate-limiting C−C bond formation step.

Here, we report the initial observations of distributions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in subsurface waters near the Deepwater Horizon oil well site (also referred to as the Macondo, Mississippi Canyon Block 252 or MC252 well). Profiles of in situ fluorescence and beam attenuation conducted during 9-16 May 2010 were characterized by distinct peaks at depths greater than 1000 m, with highest intensities close to the wellhead and decreasing intensities with increasing distance from the wellhead. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses of water samples coinciding with the deep fluorescence and beam attenuation anomalies confirmed the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons …

Integrating Environmental Science And Management: The Role Of System Dynamics Modelling, Kristin Den Exter
Dr Kristin den Exter
Institutional and epistemological differences between science and management present a challenge to the implementation of sustainable environmental management. Environmental problems are complex and require at least multidisciplinary, but most effectively transdisciplinary approaches for learning, understanding, decision-making and problem solving. This means building bridges between institutional and epistemological differences. The role of system dynamics modelling in integrating environmental science and management is examined in this thesis. An action research methodology is adopted where, over cycles of case studies, the practical application of system dynamics modelling is evaluated. The role of system dynamics modelling in the management of coastal sand dunes, tourism, …
