Modeling Functional Data With Spatially Heterogeneous Shape Characteristics, Ana-Maria Staicu, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Daniel S. Reich, David Ruppert Oct 2010

Modeling Functional Data With Spatially Heterogeneous Shape Characteristics, Ana-Maria Staicu, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Daniel S. Reich, David Ruppert

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We propose a novel class of models for functional data exhibiting skewness or other shape characteristics that vary with spatial or temporal location. We use copulas so that the marginal distributions and the dependence structure can be modeled independently. Dependence is modeled with a Gaussian or t-copula, so that there is an underlying latent Gaussian process. We model the marginal distributions using the skew t family. The mean, variance, and shape parameters are modeled nonparametrically as functions of location. A computationally tractable inferential framework for estimating heterogeneous asymmetric or heavy-tailed marginal distributions is introduced. This framework provides a new set …

Effects Of Open And Closed System Oxidation On Texture And Magnetic Response Of Remelted Basaltic Glass, Katherine Burgess, Reid F. Cooper, Julie A. Bowles, Jeffrey S. Gee, Daniele J. Cherniak Oct 2010

Effects Of Open And Closed System Oxidation On Texture And Magnetic Response Of Remelted Basaltic Glass, Katherine Burgess, Reid F. Cooper, Julie A. Bowles, Jeffrey S. Gee, Daniele J. Cherniak

Geosciences Faculty Articles

As part of an experimental and observational study of the magnetic response of submarine basaltic glass (SBG), we have examined, using ion backscattering spectrometry (RBS), transmission and scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and surface X-ray diffraction, the textures wrought by the controlled, open and closed system oxidation of glasses prepared by the controlled environment remelting and quenching of natural SBG. Initial compositions with ~9 wt % FeO* were melted at 1430°C with the oxygen fugacity buffered at fayalite-magnetite-quartz; melts were cooled at a rate of 200°C min−1 near the glass transition (Tg = 680°C). In open …

Rf System Models For The Cern Large Hadron Collider With Application To Longitudinal Dynamics, T. Mastorides, C. Rivetta, J.D. Fox, D. Van Winkle, P. Baudrenghien

Physics

The LHC RF station-beam interaction strongly influences the longitudinal beam dynamics, both single bunch and collective effects. Non-linearities and noise generated within the Radio Frequency (RF) accelerating system interact with the beam and contribute to beam motion and longitudinal emittance blowup. Thus, the noise power spectrum of the RF accelerating voltage strongly affects the longitudinal beam distribution. Furthermore, the coupled-bunch instabilities are also directly affected by the RF components and the configuration of the Low Level RF (LLRF) feedback loops. In this work we present a formalism relating the longitudinal beam dynamics with the RF system configurations, an estimation of …

Towards Establishing A Change Management Process At An Academic Research Laboratory Network, Russell Moult Oct 2010

Towards Establishing A Change Management Process At An Academic Research Laboratory Network, Russell Moult

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This report focuses on the evaluation and development of a change management process for the Regis University Academic Research Network (ARNe), and specifically the SEAD Practicum. The author originally proposed expanding on a security audit performed on the ARNe in 2008, and researched, evaluated and presents several risk assessment methodologies. This broad approach was later focused on the practical aspects of developing a change management process for the ARNe/SEAD Practicum, based on researching applicable standards and best practice guidance. A management questionnaire and user survey were developed and distributed to obtain valuable opinions and perspectives from the individuals most directly …

Functionalization Of Diamond And Its Application In High Performance Liquid Chromatography And Solid Phase Extraction, Gaurav Saini Oct 2010

Functionalization Of Diamond And Its Application In High Performance Liquid Chromatography And Solid Phase Extraction, Gaurav Saini

Theses and Dissertations

The primary focus of my work was to chemically functionalize diamond as normal and reversed phases for solid phase extraction (SPE) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Diamond was functionalized with -NH2 groups via self-limiting adsorption of an amine-containing polymer, polyallylamine (PAAm), onto oxidized diamond particles. The chemical stability of these particles was improved by thermal curing or chemical crosslinking with 1,2,5,6-diepoxycyclooctane. The reversed phase material for SPE was synthesized by reacting amine-functionalized diamond particles with long chain alkyl and a perfluorinated isocyanate. Unlike commercially available silica, functionalized diamond particles were stable under extreme pH conditions (pH 0-14). Functionalized diamond …

Study Of Ψ(2s) Decays To Γpp, Π0pp And Η Pp And Search For Pp Threshold Enhancements, Raymond Mountain, Marina Artuso, S. Blusk, T. Skwarnicki Oct 2010

Study Of Ψ(2s) Decays To Γpp, Π0pp And Η Pp And Search For Pp Threshold Enhancements, Raymond Mountain, Marina Artuso, S. Blusk, T. Skwarnicki

Physics - All Scholarship

The decays of psi(2S) into gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been studied with the CLEO-c detector using a sample of 24.5 million psi(2S) events obtained from e^+e^- annihilations at sqrt{s} = 3686 MeV. The data show evidence for the excitation of several N^* resonances in p pi^0 and p eta channels in pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} decays, and f_2 states in gamma p bar{p} decay. Branching fractions for decays of psi(2S) to gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been determined. No evidence for p bar{p} threshold …
