Nona-Arginine Facilitates Delivery Of Quantum Dots Into Cells Via Multiple Pathways, Yi Xu, Betty Revon Liu, Han Jung Lee, Katie Shannon, Jeffrey G. Winiarz, Tien-Chun Wang, Huey-Jenn Chiang, Yue-Wern Huang

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have recently been used to deliver and monitor biomolecules, such as drugs and proteins. However, QDs alone have a low efficiency of transport across the plasma membrane. In order to increase the efficiency, we used synthetic nona-arginine (SR9), a cell-penetrating peptide, to facilitate uptake. We found that SR9 increased the cellular uptake of QDs in a noncovalent binding manner between QDs and SR9. Further, we investigated mechanisms of QD/SR9 cellular internalization. Low temperature and metabolic inhibitors markedly inhibited the uptake of QD/SR9, indicating that internalization is an energy-dependent process. Results from both the pathway inhibitors and …

Design Of A Conditioner For Smoothing Wind Turbine Output Power, Murali Bottu, Mariesa Crow, A. Curt Elmore Sep 2010

Design Of A Conditioner For Smoothing Wind Turbine Output Power, Murali Bottu, Mariesa Crow, A. Curt Elmore

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As a result of wind speed intermittency, highly variable wind power output can adversely impact local loads. We propose a conditioner to smooth the variable wind power by utilizing the energy of an ultracapacitor. The conditioner is based on a single phase voltage source inverter (VSI) connected between the grid interconnection point and the ultracapacitor. The shunt VSI injects or absorbs active power from the line to smooth the wind power by utilizing the short term storage capabilities of the ultracapacitor. The ultracapacitor is connected to the DC link through a DC-DC converter, which maintains the voltage of the DC …

Deep Traps In Algan/Gan Heterostructures Studied By Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy: Effect Of Carbon Concentration In Gan Buffer Layers, Z-Q. Fang, B. Claflin, David C. Look, D. S. Green, R. Vetury

Physics Faculty Publications

Electrical properties, including leakage currents, threshold voltages, and deep traps, of AlGaN/GaN heterostructure wafers with different concentrations of carbon in the GaN buffer layer, have been investigated by temperature dependent current-voltage and capacitance-voltage measurements and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), using Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs). It is found that (i) SBDs fabricated on the wafers with GaN buffer layers containing a low concentration of carbon (low-[C] SBD) or a high concentration of carbon (high-[C] SBD) have similar low leakage currents even at 500 K; and (ii) the low-[C] SBD exhibits a larger (negative) threshold voltage than the high-[C] SBD. Detailed …

Space-Time Properties Of A Boson-Dressed Fermion For The Yukawa Model, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe Sep 2010

Space-Time Properties Of A Boson-Dressed Fermion For The Yukawa Model, R E. Wagner, M R. Ware, Q Su, Rainer Grobe

Faculty publications – Physics

We analyze the interaction of fermions and bosons through a one-dimensional Yukawa model. We numerically compute the energy eigenstates that represent a physical fermion, which is a superposition of bare fermionic and bosonic eigenstates of the uncoupled Hamiltonian. It turns out that even fast bare fermions require only low-momentum dressing bosons, which attach themselves to the fast fermion through quantum correlations. We compare the space-time evolution of a physical fermion with that of its bare counterpart and show the importance of using dressed observables. The time evolution of the center of mass as well as the wave packet's spatial width …

Grouped Variable Model Selection For Heterogeneous Medical Signals, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh Sep 2010

Grouped Variable Model Selection For Heterogeneous Medical Signals, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We explore statistical regression techniques for use in medical monitoring and telehealth applications. Medical embedded systems of the present and future are recording vast sets of data related to medical conditions and physiology. In this paper, distributed time-lag linear models are proposed as a means to help explain relationships between two or more medical and physiological measurements. The issues associated with performing multiple regression with heterogeneous medical data are treated as problems in model selection. An automatic method of model selection is proposed to construct models for high sample rate data by grouping sets of predictor variables.

The grouped predictor …

Dynamical (E, 2e) Studies Using Tetrahydrofuran As A Dna Analog, Christopher J. Colyer, Susan M. Bellm, B. Lohmann, G. Friedrich Hanne, Ola A. Al-Hagan, Don H. Madison, Chuangang Ning Sep 2010

Dynamical (E, 2e) Studies Using Tetrahydrofuran As A Dna Analog, Christopher J. Colyer, Susan M. Bellm, B. Lohmann, G. Friedrich Hanne, Ola A. Al-Hagan, Don H. Madison, Chuangang Ning

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Triple differential cross sections for the electron-impact ionization of the outer valence orbital of tetrahydrofuran have been measured using the (e, 2e) technique. The measurements have been performed with coplanar asymmetric kinematics, at an incident electron energy of 250 eV and at an ejected electron energy of 10 eV, over a range of momentum transfers. The experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations carried out using the molecular three-body distorted wave model. The results obtained are important for gaining an understanding of electron driven processes at a molecular level and for modeling energy deposition in living tissue.

Tracing Multiple Scattering Patterns In Absolute (E, 2e) Cross Sections For H₂ And He Over A 4Π Solid Angle, Xueguang Ren, Arne Senftleben, Thomas Pflüger, Alexander Dorn, James Colgan, Michael S. Pindzola, Ola A. Al-Hagan, Don H. Madison, Igor Bray, Dmitry V. Fursa, Joachim Hermann Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Absolutely normalized (e,2e) measurements for H2 and He covering the full solid angle of one ejected electron are presented for 16 eV sum energy of both final state continuum electrons. For both targets rich cross-section structures in addition to the binary and recoil lobes are identified and studied as a function of the fixed electron's emission angle and the energy sharing among both electrons. For H2 their behavior is consistent with multiple scattering of the projectile as discussed before. For He the binary and recoil lobes are significantly larger than for H2 and partly cover the multiple …

All Solid-State Mid-Ir Laser Development, Nonlinear Absorption Investigation And Laser-Induced Damage Study, Torrey J. Wagner Sep 2010

All Solid-State Mid-Ir Laser Development, Nonlinear Absorption Investigation And Laser-Induced Damage Study, Torrey J. Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

In this research, nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and laser-induced damage thresholds are measured in Ge and GaSb, which are materials that are used in IR detectors. Using a simultaneous fitting technique to extract nonlinear absorption coefficients from data at two pulse widths, two-photon and free-carrier absorption coefficients are measured in Ge and GaSb at 2.05 and 2.5 μm for the first time. At these wavelengths, nonlinear absorption is the primary damage mechanism, and damage thresholds at picosecond and nanosecond pulse widths were measured and agreed well with modeled thresholds using experimentally measured parameters. The damage threshold for a single-layer Al …

Controlling Individual Domain Walls In Ferromagnetic Nanowires For Memory And Sensor Applications, Andrew Kunz, Sarah C. Reiff, Jonathan D. Priem, Eric W. Rentsch Sep 2010

Controlling Individual Domain Walls In Ferromagnetic Nanowires For Memory And Sensor Applications, Andrew Kunz, Sarah C. Reiff, Jonathan D. Priem, Eric W. Rentsch

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Controlled motion of 180o and 360o domain walls along planar nanowires is presented. Standard Landau – Lifshitz micromagnetic modeling has been used to simulate the response of the domain walls to the application of an external magnetic field. A 180o wall is quickly and easily moved with the application of an applied. field along the axis of the wire but a 360odomain wall is stationary in the same case. An oscillatory applied field can be used to continually move the wall along the wires axis. The speed at which the 360o domain wall is found to be several times slower …

Cloud Computing:Strategies For Cloud Computing Adoption, Faith Shimba Sep 2010

Cloud Computing:Strategies For Cloud Computing Adoption, Faith Shimba

Dissertations

The advent of cloud computing in recent years has sparked an interest from different organisations, institutions and users to take advantage of web applications. This is a result of the new economic model for the Information Technology (IT) department that cloud computing promises. The model promises a shift from an organisation required to invest heavily for limited IT resources that are internally managed, to a model where the organisation can buy or rent resources that are managed by a cloud provider, and pay per use. Cloud computing also promises scalability of resources and on-demand availability of resources.

Although, the adoption …

The Effectiveness Of Vertebrate Passage And Prevention Structures: A Study Of Boeckman Road In Wilsonville, Catherine E. De Rivera, Leslie L. Bliss-Ketchum

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the most obvious impacts roads have on the natural world is direct mortality to individual animals that attempt to cross roads. A less obvious but likely more important impact of roads on many species is habitat fragmentation. The ability for individuals to travel between subpopulations is the key to genetic diversity as well as ultimately the survival of the species. Considering these impacts and management goals to increase habitat connectivity, increased attention has been given to creating road design that reduces wildlife collisions. Most studies, however, have been in other countries or regions and most focus on connectivity …

Quantitative Analysis Of Arterial Spin Labeling Fmri Data Using A General Linear Model, Luis Hernandez-Garcia, Hesamoddin Jahanian, Daniel Rowe Sep 2010

Quantitative Analysis Of Arterial Spin Labeling Fmri Data Using A General Linear Model, Luis Hernandez-Garcia, Hesamoddin Jahanian, Daniel Rowe

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Arterial spin labeling techniques can yield quantitative measures of perfusion by fitting a kinetic model to difference images (tagged-control). Because of the noisy nature of the difference images investigators typically average a large number of tagged versus control difference measurements over long periods of time. This averaging requires that the perfusion signal be at a steady state and not at the transitions between active and baseline states in order to quantitatively estimate activation induced perfusion. This can be an impediment for functional magnetic resonance imaging task experiments. In this work, we introduce a general linear model (GLM) that specifies Blood …

Investigations Of Alteration Zones Based On Fluid Inclusion Microthermometry At Sungun Porphyry Copper Deposit, Nw Iran, Omid Asghari, Ardeshir Hezarkhani

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

The Sungun porphyry copper deposit is located in East Azerbaijan, NW of Iran. The porphyries occur as stocks and dikes ranging in composition from quartz monzodiorite to quartz monzonite. Four types of hypogene alteration are developed; potassic, phyllic, propylitic and argillic. Three types of fluid inclusions are typically observed at Sungun; (1) vapor-rich, (2) liquid-rich and (3) multi-phase. Halite is the principal solid phase in the latter. The primary multiphase inclusions within the quartz crystals were chosen for micro-thermometric analyses and considered to calculate the geological pressure and hydrothermal fluid density. In potassic zone, the average of homogenization temperature is …

First Search For Gravitational Waves From The Youngest Known Neutron Star, J. Abadie, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a search for periodic gravitational waves from the neutron star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The search coherently analyzes data in a 12 day interval taken from the fifth science run of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. It searches gravitational-wave frequencies from 100 to 300 Hz and covers a wide range of first and second frequency derivatives appropriate for the age of the remnant and for different spin-down mechanisms. No gravitational-wave signal was detected. Within the range of search frequencies, we set 95% confidence upper limits of (0.7-1.2) x 10-24 on the intrinsic gravitational-wave strain, (0.4-4) …

A Risk Assessment Based Model For Assessing The Environmental Sustainability Of Tourism And Recreation Areas, Peter Roe Sep 2010

A Risk Assessment Based Model For Assessing The Environmental Sustainability Of Tourism And Recreation Areas, Peter Roe

Doctoral

Assessing the environmental quality of tourism and recreation areas is considered fundamental to the sustainable management of these resources. However, existing methodologies for such assessments rely on sets of environmental data that are often poorly linked and difficult to interpret and integrate in a holistic manner. Risk assessment is a concept that has developed to the point where it has the potential to address current limitations in environmental assessment methodologies. This thesis presents a new model for the application of risk assessment to the management and assessment of environmental sustainability in the tourism and recreation sector. This model was applied …

User's Guide To Mbc3: Multi-Blade Coordinate Transformation Code For 3-Bladed Wind Turbine, G. S. Bir Sep 2010

User's Guide To Mbc3: Multi-Blade Coordinate Transformation Code For 3-Bladed Wind Turbine, G. S. Bir

Publications (E)

The dynamics of wind turbine rotor blades are conventionally expressed in rotating frames attached to the individual blades. The tower-nacelle subsystem though, sees the combined effect of all rotor blades, not the individual blades. Also, the rotor responds as a whole to excitations such as aerodynamic gusts, control inputs, and tower-nacelle motion—all of which occur in a nonrotating frame. Multi-blade coordinate transformation (MBC) helps integrate the dynamics of individual blades and express them in a fixed (nonrotating) frame. MBC involves two steps: transforming the rotating degrees of freedom and transforming the equations of motion. Reference 1 details the MBC operation. …

Green Power Marketing In The United States: A Status Report (2009 Data), Lori Bird, Jenny Sumner

Publications (E)

This report documents green power marketing activities and trends in the United States. Aggregate green power sales data for all voluntary purchase markets across the United States are presented for 2009. The data presented in this report are based primarily on figures provided to NREL by utilities and independent renewable energy marketers. Because data cannot be obtained from all market participants, the estimates presented here likely represent an underestimate of the market size. Key trends identified in this year’s report include:
• In 2009, total retail sales of renewable energy in voluntary markets exceeded 30 million MWh, an increase of …
