Alkyl and multifunctional nitrates (RONO2, ΣANs) have been observed to be a significant fraction of NOy in a number of different chemical regimes. Their formation is an important free radical chain termination step ending production of ozone and possibly affecting formation of secondary organic aerosol. ΣANs also represent a potentially large, unmeasured contribution to OH reactivity and are a major pathway for the removal of nitrogen oxides from the atmosphere. In the presence of TMSOTf and a trialkylamine base, acetic acid undergoes aldol addition to non-enolizable aldehydes under exceptionally mild conditions. Acidic workup yields the β-hydroxy carboxylic acid. The reaction appears to proceed via a three-step, one-pot process, including in situ trimethylsilyl ester formation, bis-silyl ketene acetal formation, and TMSOTf-catalyzed Mukaiyama aldol addition. Independently synthesized TMSOAc also undergoes aldol additions under similar conditions.

Differential Cross Sections And Recoil Polarizations For The Reaction Γp→K+Σ0, B. Dey, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Et. Al.

High-statistics measurements of differential cross sections and recoil polarizations for the reaction γp → K+Σ0 have been obtained using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. We cover center-of-mass energies (√s) from 1.69 to 2.84 GeV, with an extensive coverage in the K+ production angle. Independent measurements were made using the K+(γ) and K+p(π, γ ) final-state topologies, and were found to exhibit good agreement. Our differential cross sections show good agreement with earlier CLAS, SAPHIR, and LEPS results, while offering better statistical precision and …

Microstrip Superconducting Quantum Interference Device Amplifiers With Submicron Josephson Junctions: Enhanced Gain At Gigahertz Frequencies, Britton Plourde, M. P. Defeo, P. Bhupathi, Kang Yu, T. W. Heitmann

We present measurements of an amplifier based on a dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with submicron Al-AlOx-Al Josephson junctions. The small junction size reduces their self-capacitance and allows for the use of relatively large resistive shunts while maintaining nonhysteretic operation. This leads to an enhancement of the SQUID transfer function compared to SQUIDs with micron-scale junctions. The device layout is modified from that of a conventional SQUID to allow for coupling signals into the amplifier with a substantial mutual inductance for a relatively short microstrip coil. Measurements at 310 mK exhibit gain of 32 dB at 1.55 GHz.

Our sense of touch allows us to feel the forces in our limbs when we walk, swim, or hold our arms out the window of a moving car. We anticipate this sense is key in the locomotion of natural flyers. Inspired by the sense of touch, the overall goal of this research is to develop techniques for the estimation of aerodynamic loads from structural measurements for flight control applications. Discovery Of A Strongly Apoptotic Ruthenium Complex Through Combinatorial Coordination Chemistry, Seann P. Mulcahy

A strategy for combinatorial parallel coordination chemistry is introduced that provides access to libraries of tris-heteroleptic ruthenium complexes in an economical fashion. Using this method, a library of 560 constitutionally unique, monocationic ruthenium complexes was synthesized, followed by a screening for anticancer activity and resulting in the identification of three hits with promising cytotoxic properties in HeLa cancer cells. A subsequent structure–activity relationship led to the discovery of the surprisingly simple anticancer complex [Ru(tBu2bpy)2(phox)]PF6 (complex 1), with tBu2bpy = 4,4′-di-tert-buty-2,2′-bipyridine and Hphox = 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)oxazoline, displaying an LC50 value in HeLa cells of 1.3 μM and 0.3 μM after incubation for …

[Fe-Fe]-hydrogenases are enzymes that reversibly catalyze the reaction of protons and electrons to molecular hydrogen, which occurs in anaerobic media. In living systems, [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenases are mostly used for H(2) production. The [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenase H-cluster is the active site, which contains two iron atoms. The latest theoretical investigations1,2 advocate that the structure of di-iron air inhibited species are either Fe(p) (II)-Fe(d) (II)-O-H(-), or Fe(p) (II)-Fe(d) (II)-O-O-H, thus O(2) has to be prevented from binding to Fe(d) in all di-iron subcluster oxidation states in order to retain a catalytically active enzyme. Chronostratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Mid-Cretaceous Wayan Formation Of Eastern Idaho, With A Description Of The First Oryctodromeus Specimens From Idaho, Laurel J. Krumenacker

The mid-Cretaceous Wayan Formation of Idaho consists of floodplain-deposited siltstones and mudstones, with subordinate fluvial sandstones and conglomerates. Deposition occurred in a tectonic foredeep at the toe of the Sevier thrust complex. Measurement of two incomplete and one complete section indicates a thickness of roughly 1,344 meters in the study area. No laterally extensive marker beds are present but the lower Wayan contains distinct chert pebble conglomerates, and the middle Wayan may contain a higher relative abundance of fluvial sandstone. Known fossil localities are limited to the lower and middle portions of the formation. The Wayan Formation, as currently defined, …

X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) at the cadmium L3 and oxygen K edges for CdO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition method, is interpreted within the real-space multiple scattering formalism, FEFF code. The features in the experimental spectra are well reproduced by calculations for a cluster of about six and ten coordination shells around the absorber for L3 edge of Cd and K edge of O, respectively. The calculated projected electronic density of states is found to be in good agreement with unoccupied electronic states in experimental data and allows to conclude that the orbital character of the …

This has been possible through the Internet, which allows users to access a vast collection of historical documents and makes historical and data research more attainable. However, the insurmountable number of images available in these digital libraries is cumbersome for a single user to read and process. Following a first study on a late afterglow in flowing pure nitrogen post discharge, we report new two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) measurements of the absolute ground-state atomic nitrogen density N(4S) and investigate the influence of methane introduced downstream from the discharge by varying the CH4 mixing ratio from 0% up to 50%. The N (4S) maximum density is about 2.2 × 1015 cm−3 in pure N2 for a residence time of 22 ms and does not change significantly for methane mixing ratio up to ~15%, while above, a drastic decrease is observed. The refractive index dynamics of InAs/GaAs quantum dot based waveguide absorbers is studied using heterodyne pump-probe measurements. Absorption reduction due to the pump can be accompanied by either positive or negative refractive index changes depending on the wavelength used. This change in sign of the phase amplitude coupling can be understood by considering the atomlike nature of the quantum dot transitions involved.

During Project AAFEX, PM emissions measurements were conducted on a CFM56-2C1 gas turbine engine in January 2009 in Palmdale CA. The engine was mounted on a NASA DC-8 aircraft, which was parked on the runway, and emission samples were extracted at the engine exit plane (1m), in the near field (30m), and in the advected plume (145m). The engine was operated at several power levels, and burned several fuels: JP-8, a Fischer-Tropsch fuel derived from natural gas (FT1), and a second Fischer-Tropsch fuel derived from gasified coal (FT2). Evolutionary relationships are key to modern understanding of biological systems. Phylogenetic search is the means by which these relationships are inferred. Phylogenetic search is NP-Hard. As such it is necessary to employ heuristic methods. This work proposes new methods based on viewing the relationships between species as sets of partitions. These methods produce more parsimonious phylogenies than current methods.

Understanding the population demography, species distribution and biogeography of Australia’s megafauna is essential for understanding their extinction. This process is only just beginning, and this article discusses these aspects while concentrating on a particular region; the southern Lake Eyre Basin (SLEB). It is also the first detailed description of the distribution of megafauna across that region of central Australia. The data are based on an extensive longitudinal study of 41 palaeontological sites spread across 250 000km2. Water-protein interactions dictate many processes crucial to protein function including folding, dynamics, interactions with other biomolecules, and enzymatic catalysis. Here we examine the effect of surface fluorination on water-protein interactions. Modification of designed coiled-coil proteins by incorporation of 5,5,5-trifluoroleucine or (4S)-2-amino-4-methylhexanoic acid enables systematic examination of the effects of side-chain volume and fluorination on solvation dynamics. Using ultrafast fluorescence spectroscopy, we find that fluorinated side chains exert electrostatic drag on neighboring water molecules, slowing water motion at the protein surface.

Raman spectra were taken of olivine for analysis of vibrational energy intensity ratios. This allowed for determination of its crystal orientation. Garnet inclusions in peridotite were mapped and Raman spectra were taken for these as well. The inclusions could not identified, and data from the Raman spectra proved inconclusive due to difficulty in removing background signal.

The potential application of intermetallic compounds (IMC) under high hydrogen pressure in studies of hydrogen sorption properties is defined by two important properties. Intermetallics of Laves phases have a suitable binding energy for hydrogen which allows its absorption or desorption near room temperature and atmospheric pressure. High pressures allow to efficiently interact hydrogen with intermetallics, which were considered nonhydride forming [1,2]. For example, ZrFe2, ZrCo2, and ZrFe2 possess fairly high hydrogen absorption capacity at high pressures [3]. We are studying the effects of pressure on HMX (Octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine) using infrared spectroscopy. The sample is put under pressure using a diamond anvil cell at ambient temperature, data is collected at the National Synchrotron Light Source in Brookhaven National Laboratory. In analyzing this data, we hope to learn more about the molecular vibrations as the molecule bends and deforms under pressure. Such understanding could aid in determining new safety standards or more efficient ways of using HMX. Big Soda Lake, Nevada, is a terminal, volcanic crater lake whose water level is maintained exclusively by groundwater. The crater is composed of volcanic, basaltic sand and the lake is ~60 m deep (Rush, 1972). The lake is meromictic with a distinct chemocline (Kimmel et al. 1978). The chemocline currently rests at ~40 m and is reflected in both specific conductivity and salinity measurements. Below the chemocline a redox gradient develops with highly reducing conditions. The correlation between temperature and carbon dioxide concentration in the past one hundred years is studied. Separate graphs containing data from Vostok, Antarctica and the Mojave desert/mountain west (Nevada region) are presented. Using data obtained from these graphs, an attempt is made to explain the results and investigate the similarity of these results for Antarctica and Nevada. The importance of this study lies in the fact that if data show the same trend in the two regions, many findings for climate change in Antarctica may readily be validated and employed for Nevada.

Electronic, magnetic, and chemical properties of Fe nanoparticles are of particular interest for materials science, engineering, and metallurgical applications, including biomedical applications (e.g., medical imaging, cancer treatment, etc.). In this study, we search for the most stable geometries of the Fe clusters, Fen, up to n=8. Binding energies, magnetic moments, bond lengths, bond angles, and charge densities of clusters are computed and compared to the available experimental data. The various cluster isomers were examined energetically. We found that, in general, higher dimensional geometries are more stable than lower dimensions (i.e., 1-dimension or 2-dimension). Nitrification and denitrification are two important steps in the nitrogen cycle . Nitrification, a two step process, leads to the production of NO3-, (Fig. 1). In the first step, ammonia oxidation, NH3 is oxidized to NO2-, and in the second step, nitrite oxidation, NO2- is oxidized to NO3-. Until recently, very little was know about nitrification in high temperature environments. However, in 2008 a thermophilic archaeon, named “Candidatus Nitrosocaldus yellowstonii”, was shown to mediate ammonia oxidation up to 74°C. The Raman effect is the excitation or de-excitation of vibrational modes resulting from the inelastic scattering of light from a gas, liquid, or solid with a shift in energy from that of the usually incident radiation. Raman microscopy was performed on synthesized spinel powders of solid solution FexCr3-xO4 to determine the dependence of the vibrational modes upon the metal cations. The powders were synthesized in a combustion reaction using metal nitrates and urea. The oxide powders were reduced in a hydrogen/argon gas flow at high temperature.

Crystal size reduction in bulk materials changes the structural and magnetic properties considerably [1]. More importantly the transition pressure is strongly influenced by temperature, pressure, and the crystallite size effect. Rare earth europium chalcogenides crystallize in the NaCl (rock salt) type structure. The interest in Eu nanomaterials is motivated by the possibility of their use in magnetic devices [2,3]. Recent studies suggest that europium chalcogenide nanocrystals exhibit significant changes in their structural and magnetic properties, compared to bulk chalcogenides, when the nanocrystal diameter decreases. Titanium dihydride has the potential to play an important role in the efficiency of high density hydrogen storage. The structural instability of TiH2 at high pressures makes an accurate characterization of its structure a vital part of understanding its behavior. A sample of TiH2 was placed in a diamond anvil cell and studied from ambient pressure up to 53 GPa using in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) of Argonne National Laboratory (Sector 16, HPCAT).
