Relativistic Studies Of The Charmonium And Bottomonium Systems Using The Sucher Equation, Charles Martin Werneth Aug 2010

Relativistic Studies Of The Charmonium And Bottomonium Systems Using The Sucher Equation, Charles Martin Werneth

Dissertations

In this dissertation, bound states of quarks and anti-quarks (mesons) are studied with a relativistic equation known as the Sucher equation. Prior to the work in this dissertation, the Sucher equation had never been used for meson mass spectra. Furthermore, a full angular momentum analysis of the Sucher equation has never been studied. The Sucher equation is a relativistic equation with positive energy projectors imposed on the interaction. Since spin is inherent to the equation, the Sucher equation is equivalent to a relativistic Schrödinger equation with a spin-dependent effective potential. Through a complete general angular momentum analysis of the equation, …

Discrete Groups And The Complex Contact Geometry Of Sl(2, C), Brendan Foreman Aug 2010

Discrete Groups And The Complex Contact Geometry Of Sl(2, C), Brendan Foreman

Mathematics and Computer Science

We investigate the vertical foliation of the standard complex contact structure on Γ \ Sl(2, C), where Γ is a discrete subgroup. We find that, if Γ is nonelementary, the vertical leaves on Γ \ Sl(2, C) are holomorphic but not regular. However, if Γ is Kleinian, then Γ \ Sl(2, C) contains an open, dense set on which the vertical leaves are regular, complete and biholomorphic to C ∗. If Γ is a uniform lattice, the foliation is nowhere regular, although there are both infinitely many compact and infinitely many nonclosed leaves.

Glassy Dislocation Dynamics In 2d Colloidal Dimer Crystals, Sharon J. Gerbode, Ugmang Agarwal, Desmond C. Ong, Chekesha M. Liddell, Fernando Escobedo, Itai Cohen Aug 2010

Glassy Dislocation Dynamics In 2d Colloidal Dimer Crystals, Sharon J. Gerbode, Ugmang Agarwal, Desmond C. Ong, Chekesha M. Liddell, Fernando Escobedo, Itai Cohen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Although glassy relaxation is typically associated with disorder, here we report on a new type of glassy dynamics relating to dislocations within 2D crystals of colloidal dimers. Previous studies have demonstrated that dislocation motion in dimer crystals is restricted by certain particle orientations. Here, we drag an optically trapped particle through such dimer crystals, creating dislocations. We find a two-stage relaxation response where initially dislocations glide until encountering particles that cage their motion. Subsequent relaxation occurs logarithmically slowly through a second process where dislocations hop between caged configurations. Finally, in simulations of sheared dimer crystals, the dislocation mean squared displacement …

Temporal And Spatial Monitoring Of Mobile Nanoparticles In A Vineyard Soil: Evidence Of Nanoaggregate Formation, N. Perdrial, J. N. Perdrial, J. E. Delphin, F. Elsass, N. Liewig

College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Publications

Mechanisms of formation, stabilization, liberation, transport and deposition of nanoparticles and their relationship to contaminant transport remain scarcely investigated in natural porous media. This study investigated nanoparticles mobilized in the pore space of a French vineyard soil by observing mobile soil-derived organic matter (SOM) and minerals in pore fluids over an 8-month monitoring period. Samples were collected in situ and investigated by transmission electron microscopy coupled to electron-dispersive spectroscopy. The main types of nanoparticles transported within the soil were clay, bacteria, SOM and nanoaggregates. Nanometric clay particles were enriched in various metals (Fe, Zn, As and Pb) and organically-derived constituents. …

Photomediated Synthesis Of Silver Triangular Bipyramids And Prisms: The Effect Of Ph And Bspp, Jian Zhang, Mark R. Langille, Chad A. Mirkin Aug 2010

Photomediated Synthesis Of Silver Triangular Bipyramids And Prisms: The Effect Of Ph And Bspp, Jian Zhang, Mark R. Langille, Chad A. Mirkin

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

The photomediated synthesis of silver right triangular bipyramids and prisms has been studied, and we have determined that pH and [BSPP]/[Ag+] ratio (bis(p-sulfonatophenyl)phenylphosphine, BSPP) finely control the reaction rate and, consequently, the crystal growth pathway and morphology of final products. A fast reaction rate, realized at a high pH such as 10 or 11 and a [BSPP]/[Ag+] ratio close to 1.0, is necessary to synthesize (100)-faceted right triangular bipyramids in high yield by preferential deposition on (111) facets of planar-twinned seeds. A slower reaction rate, which occurs at lower pH or higher [BSPP]/[Ag+ …

Spatial Variations Of Crustal Characteristics Beneath The Hoggar Swell, Algeria, Revealed By Systematic Analyses Of Receiver Functions From A Single Seismic Station, Kelly H. Liu, Stephen S. Gao Aug 2010

Spatial Variations Of Crustal Characteristics Beneath The Hoggar Swell, Algeria, Revealed By Systematic Analyses Of Receiver Functions From A Single Seismic Station, Kelly H. Liu, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Hoggar swell in Algeria is one of the significant massifs of northwest Africa. The paucity of high-resolution geophysical studies of the crust and mantle beneath the massifs is mostly responsible for the heated debates about the depth of the source region of the Cenozoic volcanism and the closely related uncertainty about the mechanism that formed and maintains the high elevation of the swells. Here we report results from a systematic study of 1386 high-quality receiver functions (RFs) recorded by station TAM, the only permanent broadband seismic station on the Hoggar swell. The resulting crustal thickness is about 34 km …

Kinematic Evidence For Superfast Locomotory Muscle In Two Species Of Teneriffiid Mites, Grace C. Wu, Jonathan C. Wright, Dwight L. Whitaker, Anna N. Ahn Aug 2010

Kinematic Evidence For Superfast Locomotory Muscle In Two Species Of Teneriffiid Mites, Grace C. Wu, Jonathan C. Wright, Dwight L. Whitaker, Anna N. Ahn

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Locomotory muscles typically operate over a narrow range of contraction frequencies, characterized by the predominant fiber types and functional roles. The highest documented frequencies in the synchronous sound-producing muscles of insects (550 Hz) and toadfish (200 Hz) far exceed the contraction frequencies observed in weight-bearing locomotory muscles, which have maximum documented frequencies below 15-30 Hz. Laws of scaling, however, predict that smaller arthropods may employ stride frequencies exceeding this range. In this study we measured running speed and stride frequency in two undescribed species of teneriffiid mites from the coastal sage scrub of southern California. Relative speeds of both species …

An Intercomparison Of Regional Atmospheric Circulation And The Melt Season Loss Of Arctic Snow Cover And Sea Ice Extent Across The Land-Ocean Boundary, Angela C. Bliss

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study is designed to compare the monthly continental snow cover and sea ice extent loss in the Arctic with regional atmospheric conditions including: mean sea level pressure, 925 hPa air temperature, and mean wind direction among others during the melt season (March-August) over the 29-year study period 1979-2007. Little research has gone into studying the concurrent variations in the annual loss of continental snow cover and sea ice extent across the land-ocean boundary, since these data are largely stored in incompatible formats. However, the analysis of these data, averaged spatially over three autonomous study regions located in Siberia, North …

Cross-Market Model Adaptation With Pairwise Preference Data For Web Search Ranking, Jing Bai, Fernando Diaz, Yi Chang, Zhaohui Zheng, Keke Chen Aug 2010

Cross-Market Model Adaptation With Pairwise Preference Data For Web Search Ranking, Jing Bai, Fernando Diaz, Yi Chang, Zhaohui Zheng, Keke Chen

Kno.e.sis Publications

Machine-learned ranking techniques automatically learn a complex document ranking function given training data. These techniques have demonstrated the effectiveness and flexibility required of a commercial web search. However, manually labeled training data (with multiple absolute grades) has become the bottleneck for training a quality ranking function, particularly for a new domain. In this paper, we explore the adaptation of machine-learned ranking models across a set of geographically diverse markets with the market-specific pairwise preference data, which can be easily obtained from clickthrough logs. We propose a novel adaptation algorithm, Pairwise-Trada, which is able to adapt ranking models that are trained …

Pattern Space Maintenance For Data Updates And Interactive Mining, Mengling Feng, Guozhu Dong, Jinyan Li, Yap-Peng Tan, Limsoon Wong

Kno.e.sis Publications

This article addresses the incremental and decremental maintenance of the frequent pattern space. We conduct an in-depth investigation on how the frequent pattern space evolves under both incremental and decremental updates. Based on the evolution analysis, a new data structure, Generator-Enumeration Tree (GE-tree), is developed to facilitate the maintenance of the frequent pattern space. With the concept of GE-tree, we propose two novel algorithms, Pattern Space Maintainer+ (PSM+) and Pattern Space Maintainer− (PSM−), for the incremental and decremental maintenance of frequent patterns. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms, on average, outperform the representative state-of-the-art …

Using high-throughput instrumentation to screen conditions, the reaction between FeCl2 and H3BTT·2HCl (BTT3- = 1,3,5-benzenetristetrazolate) in a mixture of DMF and DMSO was found to afford Fe3[(Fe4Cl)3(BTT)8] 2·22DMF·32DMSO·11H2O. This compound adopts a porous three-dimensional framework structure consisting of square [Fe4Cl]7+ units linked via triangular BTT3- bridging ligands to give an anionic 3,8-net. Mössbauer spectroscopy carried out on a DMF-solvated version of the material indicated the framework to contain high-spin Fe2+ with a distribution of local environments and confirmed the presence …

Highly Conductive Zno Grown By Pulsed Laser Deposition In Pure Ar, Robin C. Scott, Kevin D. Leedy, Burhan Bayraktaroglu, David C. Look, Yong-Hang Zhang

Physics Faculty Publications

Ga-doped ZnO was deposited by pulsed laser deposition at 200 °C on SiO2/Si, Al2O3, or quartz in 10 mTorr of pure Ar. The as-grown, bulk resistivity at 300 K is 1.8×10−4 Ω cm, three-times lower than that of films deposited at 200 °C in 10 mTorr of O2 followed by an anneal at 400 °C in forming gas. Furthermore, depth uniformity of the electrical properties is much improved. Mobility analysis shows that this excellent resistivity is mostly due to an increase in donor concentration, rather than a decrease in acceptor concentration. Optical …

A Design Science Based Evaluation Framework For Patterns, Stacie Clarke Petter, Deepak Khazanchi, John D. Murphy Aug 2010

A Design Science Based Evaluation Framework For Patterns, Stacie Clarke Petter, Deepak Khazanchi, John D. Murphy

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Patterns were originally developed in the field of architecture as a mechanism for communicating good solutions to recurring classes of problems. Since then, many researchers and practitioners have created patterns to describe effective solutions to problems associated with disparate areas such as virtual project management, human-computer interaction, software development and engineering, and design science research. We believe that the development of patterns is a design science activity in which an artifact (i.e., a pattern) is created to communicate about and improve upon the current state-of-practice. Design science research has two critical components, creation and evaluation of an artifact. While many …

Investigating Capabilities Associated With Ict Access And Use In Latino Micro-Enterprises, Travis Good, Luis Flores Morales, Sajda Qureshi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

While the process by which Information Technology enables growth in medium and large enterprises has been wellresearched, the corresponding processes in micro-enterprises are poorly understood. In fact, such micro-enterprises lie at the heart of many economies. This insight is important as information technology enables businesses to connect with each other through knowledge networking to carry out their basic business operations. There is thus a need to build our understanding of how micro-enterprises access and use technology in order to be able to assess the benefits they derive from ICT adoption. Following an analysis of two case studies of Latino micro-enterprises …

Time-Resolved Compton Scattering For A Model Fermion-Boson System, R E. Wagner, Rainer Grobe, Q Su Aug 2010

Time-Resolved Compton Scattering For A Model Fermion-Boson System, R E. Wagner, Rainer Grobe, Q Su

Faculty publications – Physics

We study the scattering of a boson with a fermion with full spatial and temporal resolution based on the one-dimensional Yukawa Hamiltonian. In quantum field theory this interaction is described by the annihilation and creation of bosons with intermediate virtual particle states. We show that this process can be modeled in the center-of-mass frame by a scattering potential, permitting us to interpret the absorption and re-emission processes in quantum mechanical terms of a characteristic force. This Compton force between the fermion and boson is repulsive for large distances and attractive for shorter spacings. We also examine the periodic dynamics of …

Contribution Of Membrane Elastic Energy To Rhodopsin Function, Olivier Soubias, Walter E. Teague, Kirk G. Hines, Drake C. Mitchell, Klaus Gawrisch

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We considered the issue of whether shifts in the metarhodopsin I (MI)-metarhodopsin II (MII) equilibrium from lipid composition are fully explicable by differences in bilayer curvature elastic stress. A series of six lipids with known spontaneous radii of monolayer curvature and bending elastic moduli were added at increasing concentrations to the matrix lipid 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) and the MI-MII equilibrium measured by flash photolysis followed by recording UV-vis spectra. The average area-per-lipid molecule and the membrane hydrophobic thickness were derived from measurements of the 2H NMR order parameter profile of the palmitic acid chain in POPC. For the series of ethanolamines …

Multistage Homotopy Analysis Method For Solving Nonlinear Integral Equations, H. Jafari, M. A. Firoozjaee Aug 2010

Multistage Homotopy Analysis Method For Solving Nonlinear Integral Equations, H. Jafari, M. A. Firoozjaee

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we present an efficient modification of the homotopy analysis method (HAM) that will facilitate the calculations. We then conduct a comparative study between the new modification and the homotopy analysis method. This modification of the homotopy analysis method is applied to nonlinear integral equations and mixed Volterra-Fredholm integral equations, which yields a series solution with accelerated convergence. Numerical illustrations are investigated to show the features of the technique. The modified method accelerates the rapid convergence of the series solution and reduces the size of work.

Latest Developments In Nonlinear Sciences, Syed T. Mohyud-Din, Ahmet Yildirim

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper outlines a detailed study of some latest trends and developments in nonlinear sciences. The major focus of our study will be variational iteration (VIM) and its modifications, homotopy perturbation (HPM), parameter expansion and exp-function methods. The above mentioned schemes are highly accurate, extraordinary efficient, capable to cope with the versatility of the physical problems and are being used to solve a wide class of nonlinear problems. Several examples are given which reveal the justification of our claim.
