Dissertations
The serine hydrolase superfamily is one of the largest known enzyme families comprising approximately 1% of the predicted protein product in human genome. This family of enzymes contains a catalytic triad that is mainly consists of serine, aspartic acid/glutamic acid and histidine residues in their active sites. It has been proposed that the potential drug targets for Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes type 2 are enzymes that belong to this enzyme family. Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps transport information from one nerve cell to another. Breakdown of acetylcholine in Alzheimer’s disease patients …

As a preliminary study to more complex situations of interest in small-scale technology, this paper envisages the elementary propagation properties of elastic waves in one-spatial dimension when some of the properties (mass density, elasticity) may vary suddenly in space or in time, the second case being of course more original. Combination of the two may be of even greater interest. Toward this goal, a critical examination of what happens to solutions at the crossing of pure space-like and time-like material discontinuities is given together with simple solutions for smooth transitions and numerical simulations in the discontinuous case. The effects on …

Physics, Astronomy and Geophysics Faculty Publications
A series of 18 flume runs were conducted in a 6-m long, 0.5-m wide recirculating flume with a bed gradient of 0.8% to determine the influence of obstruction shape on the formation and characteristics of forced pools. Six different-shaped obstructions were added to the flume with the maximum width of the obstruction held constant at 20 cm, which equaled a 40% constriction of flow. The obstruction shapes used included a square, a rectangle, a right triangle with the hypotenuse-facing upstream, a right triangle with the hypotenuse-facing downstream, a combination of a square and triangle with the hypotenuse-facing upstream, and a …

While the Chebyshev pseudospectral method provides a spectrally accurate method, integration of partial differential equations with spatial derivatives of order M requires time steps of approximately O(N−2M) for stable explicit solvers. Theoretically, time steps may be increased to O(N−M) with the use of a parameter, α-dependent mapped method introduced by Kosloff and Tal-Ezer [ J. Comput. Phys., 104 (1993), pp. 457–469]. Our analysis focuses on the utilization of this method for reasonable practical choices for N, namely N ≲ 30, as may be needed for two- or three dimensional modeling. Results presented confirm that spectral accuracy with increasing N is …

We determined trends in the use of invasive diagnostic and revascularization strategies from a multihospital community-wide perspective for patients suffering acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Comparing 3,824 patients treated in the prestent era (1986-1993) to 1,915 patients hospitalized during the stent era (1995-1997), there was a significant increase in the use of invasive procedures and revascularization techniques across a broad spectrum of AMI patients during their index hospitalization. This resulted in a higher-risk profile of patients referred for invasive management of AMI in the stent era. Cathet. Cardiovasc. Intervent. 51:255-258, 2000.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines for the management of patients with acute myocardial infarction recommend the routine use of 4 effective cardiac medications: angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, aspirin, beta-blockers, and lipid-lowering agents. Limited data are available, however, about the contemporary and changing use of these therapies, particularly from a population-based perspective. The study describes differences in the use of these medications during hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction according to age, gender, and period of hospitalization.
METHODS: The study population consisted of 6334 women and men treated at 11 hospitals in the Worcester, Mass, metropolitan area for acute myocardial infarction in 6 annual periods between …

Factors associated with delay to hospital arrival after the onset of symptoms suggestive of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were examined in the late 1960s and 1970s, but recent data concerning these characteristics are limited. The purpose of the present study was to examine overall and temporal distributions of the extent of patients' delay from the time of onset of AMI symptoms to hospital arrival and factors associated with delay in seeking medical care from a multihospital, population-based perspective. Review of medical records was undertaken of patients hospitalized with a discharge diagnosis of AMI in 16 teaching and community hospitals in …
