Recreational Boats As Potential Vectors Of Marine Organisms At An Invasion Hotspot, Ian C. Davidson, Chela J. Zabin, Andrew L. Chang, Christopher W. Brown, Mark Sytsma, Gregory M. Ruiz

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

With more than 200 aquatic nonindigenous species (NIS), San Francisco Bay (California, USA) is among the world’s most invaded harbors. Hard-substratum benthic (biofouling) organisms, which dominate NIS richness, have arrived primarily as a result of shipping and aquaculture activity over past centuries. To date there has been no assessment of the leisure craft vector in the Bay. We aimed to characterize (1) biofouling on boats’ submerged surfaces and (2) boater behavior likely to affect the risk of NIS transfers. We used an underwater pole-cam, specimen collections, and a boater questionnaire to quantify the extent and composition of biofouling on recreational …

We report the discovery in the Greenland ice sheet of a discrete layer of free nanodiamonds (NDs) in very high abundances, implying most likely either an unprecedented influx of extraterrestrial (ET) material or a cosmic impact event that occurred after the last glacial episode. From that layer, we extracted n-diamonds and hexagonal diamonds (lonsdaleite), an accepted ET impact indicator, at abundances of up to about 5!106 times background levels in adjacent younger and older ice. The NDs in the concentrated layer are rounded, suggesting they most likely formed during a cosmic impact through some process similar to carbon-vapor deposition or …

Conclusions About Niche Expansion In Introduced Impatiens Walleriana Populations Depend On Method Of Analysis, Lisa Mandle, Dan L. Warren, Matthias H. Hoffmann, A. Townsend Peterson, Johanna Schmitt, Eric J. Von Wettberg

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Faculty Publications

Determining the degree to which climate niches are conserved across plant species' native and introduced ranges is valuable to developing successful strategies to limit the introduction and spread of invasive plants, and also has important ecological and evolutionary implications. Here, we test whether climate niches differ between native and introduced populations of Impatiens walleriana, globally one of the most popular horticultural species. We use approaches based on both raw climate data associated with occurrence points and ecological niche models (ENMs) developed with Maxent. We include comparisons of climate niche breadth in both geographic and environmental spaces, taking into account differences …

Projection Of Diffraction Patterns For Use In Cold-Neutral-Atom Trapping, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen Dec 2010

Projection Of Diffraction Patterns For Use In Cold-Neutral-Atom Trapping, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen

Physics

Scalar diffraction theory is combined with beam-propagation techniques to investigate the projection of near-field diffraction patterns to spatial locations away from the aperture for use in optically trapping cold neutral alkali-metal atoms. Calculations show that intensity distributions with localized bright and dark spots usually found within a millimeter of the diffracting aperture can be projected to a region free from optical components such as a cloud of cold atoms within a vacuum chamber. Calculations also predict that the critical properties of the optical dipole atom traps are not only maintained for the projected intensity patterns but also can be manipulated …

Source Attribution Of Ozone In Southeast Texas Before And After The Deepwater Horizon Accident Using Satellite, Sonde, Surface Monitor, And Air Mass Trajectory Data, Gary A. Morris, Barry Lefer, Bernhard Rappenglueck, Christine Haman, Marc Taylor, Mark R. Schoeberl Dec 2010

Schoeberl

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Presentations

Since the summer of 2004, over 300 ozonesondes have been launched from Rice University (29.7 N, 95.4 W) or the University of Houston (29.7 N, 95.3 W), each < 5 km from downtown Houston. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality maintains a large database of hourly surface ozone observations in Southeast Texas. In this study, we identify the contributions to surface ozone pollution levels from natural and anthropogenic sources, both local and remote in nature. This source identification is performed two ways: 1) through an analysis of sonde data, including ozone concentrations, wind speed and direction, and relative humidity data, and 2) through an analysis that combines trajectory calculations with surface monitor data. We also examine regional changes in Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) measurements of formaldehyde and ozone from 2004 – 2010. In particular, we compare the 2010 sonde, surface monitor, and satellite data after the Deepwater Horizon accident with data from previous years to determine the impact, if any, of the large source of hydrocarbons in the Gulf of Mexico on air quality in Southeast Texas.

The Human Population Growth And Its Ecological Consequences On Kenya And Tanzania, Lauren Noll Dec 2010

The Human Population Growth And Its Ecological Consequences On Kenya And Tanzania, Lauren Noll

Student Theses 2001-2013

The world population is growing at an alarming rate. The rapid growth in population numbers and density along with the steady increase in the rates are causing issues in many countries. Although every country is experiencing many consequences of the growth, the countries of Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa seem to be suffering immensely. Not only does the increasing human population in these third world countries create an overarching competition for natural resources such as food, water, and land, the growth also has detrimental effects on the surrounding environment, wildlife populations, ecotourism, and traditional African cultures.

The River Discontinuum: Applying Beaver Modifications To Baseline Conditions For Restoration Of Forested Headwaters, Denise Burchsted, Melinda Daniels, Robert Thorson, Jason Vokoun Dec 2010

The River Discontinuum: Applying Beaver Modifications To Baseline Conditions For Restoration Of Forested Headwaters, Denise Burchsted, Melinda Daniels, Robert Thorson, Jason Vokoun

Center for Integrative Geosciences

Billions of dollars are being spent in the United States to restore rivers to a desired, yet often unknown, reference condition. In lieu of a known reference, practitioners typically assume the paradigm of a connected watercourse. Geological and ecological processes, however, create patchy and discontinuous fluvial systems. One of these processes, dam building by North American beavers (Castor canadensis), generated discontinuities throughout precolonial river systems of northern North America. Under modern conditions, beaver dams create dynamic sequences of ponds and wet meadows among free-flowing segments. One beaver impoundment alone can exceed 1000 meters along the river, flood the valley laterally, …

Generalized Twisted Quantum Doubles And The Mckay Correspondence, Christopher D. Goff, Geoffrey Mason Dec 2010

Generalized Twisted Quantum Doubles And The Mckay Correspondence, Christopher D. Goff, Geoffrey Mason

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

We consider a class of quasiHopf algebras which we call generalized twisted quantum doubles. They are abelian extensions H=C[G¯]∗⋈C[G] (G is a finite group, G¯ a homomorphic image, and * denotes the dual algebra), possibly twisted by a 3-cocycle, and are a natural generalization of the twisted quantum double construction of Dijkgraaf, Pasquier and Roche. We show that if G is a subgroup of SU2(C) then H exhibits an orbifold McKay Correspondence: certain fusion rules of H define a graph with connected components indexed by conjugacy classes of G¯, each connected component being an extended affine Diagram of …

A Multivariate Latent Variable Model For Mixed – Data From Continuous And Ordinal Responses With Possibility Of Missing Responses, Ehsan B. Samani, M. Ganjali Dec 2010

A Multivariate Latent Variable Model For Mixed – Data From Continuous And Ordinal Responses With Possibility Of Missing Responses, Ehsan B. Samani, M. Ganjali

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A joint model for multivariate mixed ordinal and continuous outcomes with potentially non-random missing values in both types of responses is proposed. A full likelihood-based approach is used to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters. Some modified Pearson residuals are also introduced where the correlation between responses are taken into account. The joint modelling of responses with the possibility of missing values requires caution since the interpretation of the fitted model highly depends on the missing mechanism assumptions that are unexaminable in a fundamental sense. A common way to investigate the influence of perturbations of model components on …

Solving Fuzzy Linear Programming Problems With Piecewise Linear Membership Function, S. Effati, H. Abbasiyan Dec 2010

Solving Fuzzy Linear Programming Problems With Piecewise Linear Membership Function, S. Effati, H. Abbasiyan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we concentrate on linear programming problems in which both the right-hand side and the technological coefficients are fuzzy numbers. We consider here only the case of fuzzy numbers with linear membership functions. The symmetric method of Bellman and Zadeh (1970) is used for a defuzzification of these problems. The crisp problems obtained after the defuzzification are non-linear and even non-convex in general. We propose here the "modified subgradient method" and "method of feasible directions" and uses for solving these problems see Bazaraa (1993). We also compare the new proposed methods with well known "fuzzy decisive set method". …

The Combined Effect Of Chemical Reaction, Radiation, Mhd On Mixed Convection Heat And Mass Transfer Along A Vertical Moving Surface, Navneet Joshi, Manoj Kumar Dec 2010

The Combined Effect Of Chemical Reaction, Radiation, Mhd On Mixed Convection Heat And Mass Transfer Along A Vertical Moving Surface, Navneet Joshi, Manoj Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper discusses the effect of Chemical reaction, Radiation and MHD on laminar mixed convection boundary layer flow and heat and mass transfer on continuously moving vertical surface. The fluid viscosity is assumed to vary as an inverse linear function of temperature and local similarity solutions are obtained for the boundary layer equations subject to isothermally moving vertical surface with uniform speed. The system of non-linear partial differential equations developed in the process is finally transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations with the help of similarity transformations involved in the problem. This set of equations is for different …

Legal Research In An Electronic Age: Electronic Data Discovery, A Litigation Albatross Of Gigantic Proportions, Ahunanya Anga

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The increase in e-discovery, e-discovery‘s impact on litigation, and the courts‘ unavoidable role in defining the limits of discovery led to the author‘s decision to develop this article. The availability, accessibility, and the ease of requesting electronic data, resulting in increased e-discovery under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, is an important issue that will affect the legal profession and its constituents in many ways for years to come. Part II of this article is an overview of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 26(f). This part stresses that in recognizing the herculean task involved in e-discovery, courts expect that …

Environment and Nature Conservation Collection

Although managers safeguard protected areas for migratory species, little consideration has been given to how migratory species might benefit parks. Additionally, whereas land‐sea connections are considered in management of protected areas, most effort has focused on reducing negative “downstream” processes. Here, we offer a proposal to promote positive “upstream” processes by safeguarding the seasonal pulse of marine nutrients imported into freshwater and riparian ecosystems by spawning migrations of Pacific salmon. Currently, high rates of fishing limit this important contribution to species and processes that terrestrial parks were designed to protect. Accordingly, we propose limiting exploitation in areas and periods through …

Seasonal Aggregations Of The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) In The Port Everglades And Intracoastal Regions Of Fort Lauderdale, Florida., Jaime M. Goldman

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris), a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, is one of the most endangered marine mammals in United States waters. The Florida manatee is the only manatee that ranges into subtropical and temperate regions. During the winter months manatees adopt a “refuging strategy” where they aggregate at warm-water sources immediately following decreases in the ambient water temperature to below 20° C (68° F) in order to avoid cold stress syndrome (CSS). During the winter manatees aggregate in warm water refuges, including natural warm water springs and the effluent discharges of power plants.
