The Communication Model And The Nature Of Change In Terms Of Deforestation In China Since 1949, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao Jun 2010

The Communication Model And The Nature Of Change In Terms Of Deforestation In China Since 1949, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao

Communication Faculty Publications

This article explores the communication model and nature of change in terms of deforestation in China since 1949. Through Lasswell’s communication model and the theory of change and via historical analysis and extended literature review, we have discovered: First, Mao’s government adopted an effective one-way top-down communication model with Chinese characteristics during 1949 and 1978, which facilitated deforestation in China leading to massive economic dislocation and immense waste of resources. Second, the Chinese government’s change to practical ideology brought about new administrative practices of enacting forest protection laws and reorientating the relevant workforces to use available technologies for the production …

Developing An Improved Shift-And-Invert Arnoldi Method, H. Saberi Najafi, M. Shams Solary

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

An algorithm has been developed for finding a number of eigenvalues close to a given shift and in interval [ Lb,Ub ] of a large unsymmetric matrix pair. The algorithm is based on the shift-andinvert Arnoldi with a block matrix method. The block matrix method is simple and it uses for obtaining the inverse matrix. This algorithm also accelerates the shift-and-invert Arnoldi Algorithm by selecting a suitable shift. We call this algorithm Block Shift-and-Invert or BSI. Numerical examples are presented and a comparison has been shown with the results obtained by Sptarn Algorithm in Matlab. The results show that the …

Approximations Of Sturm-Liouville Eigenvalues Using Sinc-Galerkin And Differential Transform Methods, Marwan Taiseer Alquran, Kamel Al-Khaled

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we present a comparative study of Sinc-Galerkin method and differential transform method to solve Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem. As an application, a comparison between the two methods for various celebrated Sturm-Liouville problems are analyzed for their eigenvalues and solutions. The study outlines the significant features of the two methods. The results show that these methods are very efficient, and can be applied to a large class of problems. The comparison of the methods shows that although the numerical results of these methods are the same, differential transform method is much easier, and more efficient than the Sinc-Galerkin method.

Convergence Of The Sinc Method Applied To Volterra Integral Equations, M. Zarebnia, J. Rashidinia

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A collocation procedure is developed for the linear and nonlinear Volterra integral equations, using the globally defined Sinc and auxiliary basis functions. We analytically show the exponential convergence of the Sinc collocation method for approximate solution of Volterra integral equations. Numerical examples are included to confirm applicability and justify rapid convergence of our method.

Temperature Profiles In A Disc Brake, K. Venkateswara Reddy, D. Rama Murthy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The Science of heat transfer allows us to determine the time rate of energy transfer caused by non equilibrium of temperatures. The importance of heat transfer in proper design of Automobiles has long been recognized. In this paper we determined the transient temperature distributions in a disc brake during a single brake application using Finite difference numerical technique. Hyperbolic heat conduction which includes the effect of the finite heat propagation is gaining importance. It is necessary to consider hyperbolic heat conduction in problems involving short time intervals and for very high heat fluxes. Here we considered both parabolic and hyperbolic …

Effects Of Radiation And Variable Viscosity On Mhd Free Convective Flow And Mass Transfer Over A Stretching Sheet With Chemical Reaction, M. A. Seddeek, A. A. Almushigeh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A similarity solution is proposed for the analysis of steady free convection heat and mass transfer over a stretching sheet. The effect of radiation, chemical reaction and variable viscosity on hydromagnetic heat and mass transfer in the presence of magnetic field are investigated. The governing partial differential equations are transformed to the ordinary differential equations using similarity variables, and then solved numerically by means of the fourth-order Runge– Kutta method with shooting technique. A comparison with exact solution is performed and the results are found to be in excellent. Numerical results for the velocity, temperature and concentration as well as …

Glaciotectonic Deformation Along The Valparaiso Upland In Southwest Michigan, Usa, Brian C. Bird

Dissertations

Glaciotectonic deformation has been observed and analyzed across parts of the Valparaiso, Kendall, and Inner Kalamazoo Moraines in southwest Michigan, USA. Deformation structures such as folds and faults have been analyzed using techniques typically used by structural geologist along with the fabric of elongated clasts in the surficial diamicton. The structures are consistent with simple shear, horizontal compressional stresses, and pure shear. A series of drumlin fields exist along the western boundary of the study area. Direct investigation of the deformed sediments was conducted at a gravel pit in one of these drumlins. Lacustrine derived sediments interbedded with coarse sand …

Enrichments Of Heavy Sulfur (34s) In Sulfide Minerals: Gas Hydrates, Methane Delivery, And Anaerobic Methane Oxidation, Walter S. Borowski, Namcy M. Rodriguez, Charles K. Paull, William Ussler Iii

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The sulfur isotopic composition of authigenic, sedimentary sulfide minerals is largely controlled by sulfate reduction and related processes within sedimentary environments. Histograms show that that d34S values of sulfide minerals forming in depositional and diagenetic environments are most often negative (d34S < 0o/oo CDT) reflecting the original isotopic composition of seawater sulfate (now ~21o/oo), microbially-mediated fractionations of ~-8 to -40o/oo (a = 1.029-1.059) during sulfate reduction, and more extreme fractionations caused by sulfur disproportionation. Enrichments of heavy sulfur (d34S > 0o/oo) in sulfide …

Mining Antagonistic Communities From Social Networks, Kuan Zhang, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim Jun 2010

Mining Antagonistic Communities From Social Networks, Kuan Zhang, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

During social interactions in a community, there are often sub-communities that behave in opposite manner. These antagonistic sub-communities could represent groups of people with opposite tastes, factions within a community distrusting one another, etc. Taking as input a set of interactions within a community, we develop a novel pattern mining approach that extracts for a set of antagonistic sub-communities. In particular, based on a set of user specified thresholds, we extract a set of pairs of sub-communities that behave in opposite ways with one another. To prevent a blow up in these set of pairs, we focus on extracting a …

An Analysis Of Extreme Price Shocks And Illiquidity Among Systematic Trend Followers, Bernard Lee, Shih-Fen Cheng, Annie Koh Jun 2010

An Analysis Of Extreme Price Shocks And Illiquidity Among Systematic Trend Followers, Bernard Lee, Shih-Fen Cheng, Annie Koh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We construct an agent-based model to study the interplay between extreme price shocks and illiquidity in the presence of systematic traders known as trend followers. The agent-based approach is particularly attractive in modeling commodity markets because the approach allows for the explicit modeling of production, capacities, and storage constraints. Our study begins by using the price stream from a market simulation involving human participants and studies the behavior of various trend-following strategies, assuming initially that their participation will not impact the market. We notice an incremental deterioration in strategy performance as and when strategies deviate further and further from the …

Graph Algorithms For Nmr Resonance Assignment And Cross-Link Experiment Planning, Fei Xiong Jun 2010

Graph Algorithms For Nmr Resonance Assignment And Cross-Link Experiment Planning, Fei Xiong

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The study of three-dimensional protein structures produces insights into protein function at the molecular level. Graphs provide a natural representation of protein structures and associated experimental data, and enable the development of graph algorithms to analyze the structures and data. This thesis develops such graph representations and algorithms for two novel applications: structure-based NMR resonance assignment and disulfide cross-link experiment planning for protein fold determination. The first application seeks to identify correspondences between spectral peaks in NMR data and backbone atoms in a structure (from x-ray crystallography or homology modeling), by computing correspondences between a contact graph representing the structure …

Optimization Algorithms For Site-Directed Protein Recombination Experiment Planning, Wei Zheng Jun 2010

Optimization Algorithms For Site-Directed Protein Recombination Experiment Planning, Wei Zheng

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Site-directed protein recombination produces improved and novel protein variants by recombining sequence fragments from parent proteins. The resulting hybrids accumulate multiple mutations that have been evolutionarily accepted together. Subsequent screening or selection identifies hybrids with desirable characteristics. In order to increase the "hit rate" of good variants, this thesis develops experiment planning algorithms to optimize protein recombination experiments. First, to improve the frequency of generating novel hybrids, a metric is developed to assess the diversity among hybrids and parent proteins. Dynamic programming algorithms are then created to optimize the selection of breakpoint locations according to this metric. Second, the trade-off …

Income, Endogenous Market Structure And Innovation, Mei Lin, Shaojin Li, Andrew B. Whinston Jun 2010

Income, Endogenous Market Structure And Innovation, Mei Lin, Shaojin Li, Andrew B. Whinston

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We investigate the effect of income distribution on R&D in a dynamic framework. Our model captures both the infinite R&D race among heterogeneous innovators and a market where successful innovators generate revenues. The market structure of successful innovations is endogenous – firms produce vertically differentiated substitute goods and compete in price. Based on firms' equilibrium market revenues, we derive numerical solutions of the Markov perfect equilibrium innovation rate of the dynamic problem. A key insight in our results is that explicitly modeling price competition and the market structure plays an important role in evaluating the impact of rising income inequality …

Z-Sky: An Efficient Skyline Query Processing Framework Based On Z-Order, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Baihua Zheng, Huajing Li, Yuan Tian

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a set of data points in a multidimensional space, a skyline query retrieves those data points that are not dominated by any other point in the same dataset. Observing that the properties of Z-order space filling curves (or Z-order curves) perfectly match with the dominance relationships among data points in a geometrical data space, we, in this paper, develop and present a novel and efficient processing framework to evaluate skyline queries and their variants, and to support skyline result updates based on Z-order curves. This framework consists of ZBtree, i.e., an index structure to organize a source dataset and …

Revisiting Unpredictability-Based Rfid Privacy Models, Junzuo Lai, Robert Huijie Deng, Yingjiu Li Jun 2010

Revisiting Unpredictability-Based Rfid Privacy Models, Junzuo Lai, Robert Huijie Deng, Yingjiu Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, there have been several attempts in establishing formal RFID privacy models in the literature. These models mainly fall into two categories: one based on the notion of indistinguishability of two RFID tags, denoted as ind-privacy, and the other based on the unpredictability of the output of an RFID protocol, denoted as unp-privacy. Very recently, at CCS’09, Ma et al. proposed a modified unp-privacy model, referred to as unp -privacy. In this paper, we first revisit the existing RFID privacy models and point out their limitations. We then propose a new RFID privacy model, denoted as …

Stevent: Spatio-Temporal Event Model For Social Network Discovery, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang, Teck-Tim Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Spatio-temporal data concerning the movement of individuals over space and time contains latent information on the associations among these individuals. Sources of spatio-temporal data include usage logs of mobile and Internet technologies. This article defines a spatio-temporal event by the co-occurrences among individuals that indicate potential associations among them. Each spatio-temporal event is assigned a weight based on the precision and uniqueness of the event. By aggregating the weights of events relating two individuals, we can determine the strength of association between them. We conduct extensive experimentation to investigate both the efficacy of the proposed model as well as the …

Efficient Processing Of Exact Top-K Queries Over Disk-Resident Sorted Lists, Hwee Hwa Pang, Xuhua Ding, Baihua Zheng Jun 2010

Efficient Processing Of Exact Top-K Queries Over Disk-Resident Sorted Lists, Hwee Hwa Pang, Xuhua Ding, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The top-k query is employed in a wide range of applications to generate a ranked list of data that have the highest aggregate scores over certain attributes. As the pool of attributes for selection by individual queries may be large, the data are indexed with per-attribute sorted lists, and a threshold algorithm (TA) is applied on the lists involved in each query. The TA executes in two phases--find a cut-off threshold for the top-k result scores, then evaluate all the records that could score above the threshold. In this paper, we focus on exact top-k queries that involve monotonic linear …
