Analysis Of Precipitates And Waters Associated With An Alkaline Leachate, Gulf State Steel Property, Gadsden, Alabama: A Reconnaissance Study, Craig Vantrees

Calcite stalactites ranging in length from several inches to a foot long are found forming on the southeastern slag pile at the former Gadsden Steel Mill of the Gulf States Steel Corporation. Analyses of samples collected per EISOPQAM guidelines include the following: petrographic, conductivity, pH, XRD, XRF, TDS, and major cations and anions. Preliminary field pH and conductivity measurements indicate that waters near the slag pile have a pH ranging from 11-12 and a conductivity ranging from 1115-6300 μS/ cm. Titration data indicate that the maximum pH value is 12.5. These calcite stalactites and stream coatings result from the dissolution …

An electronic converter is designed for an isolated renewable energy system. In this system, energy produced by a small wind turbine is used to extract hydrogen from water. Unique aspects of this application that affect the performance of the converter will be defined. Design considerations of the individual components will be discussed. Calculations on performance and validation of those calculations are also presented. Lastly, an economic analysis of the produced hydrogen will be performed.

The once densely forested dry sclerophyll landscapes of the Midlands of Tasmania are now characterized by vast spans of agricultural pasture with intermittent dead and ailing eucalypt trees. This landscape changing phenomenon, rural tree dieback, has come into the focus of a collaborative research team at the University of Tasmania sponsored by the nonprofit organization, Greening Australia. Through the efforts of this team of scientists of diverse backgrounds, Greening Australia aims to create an ecologically viable reforestation plan for the Midlands.

We determined the heat released in the condensing flow of a CH3 CH2 OD/ D2 O /carrier gas mixture (EtOD/ D2 O for brevity) through a supersonic Laval nozzle by integrating the equations for supersonic flow with condensation, using the static pressure, temperature, and mole fractions of EtOD and D2 O monomers [S. Tanimura, B. E. Wyslouzil, M. S. Zahniser, J. Chem. Phys. 127, 034305 (2007)] as inputs. by considering the depletion of the monomer species, the deviation of the pressure from the isentropic value, and the heat released, we estimated that ∼10% of the EtOD molecules are present as …

Increased clinical interest in individualized ‘adaptive’ treatment policies has shifted the methodological focus for their development from the analysis of naturalistically observed strategies to experimental evaluation of a pre-selected set of strategies via multi-stage designs. Because multi-stage studies often avoid the ‘curse of dimensionality’ inherent in uncontrolled studies, and hence the need to parametrically smooth trial data, it is not surprising in this context to find direct connections among different methodological approaches. Triply Differential Single Ionization Of Argon: Charge Effects For Positron And Electron Impact, Sebastian Otranto, Ronald E. Olson, O. G. De Lucio, Robert D. Dubois

Triply differential single ionization of Ar by 200 eV positron and electron impact is measured and calculated. For an unequivocal test of kinematic differences, fully differential ejected electron angular distributions are measured using the same experimental apparatus and conditions for both positron and electron impact. The binary/recoil intensity ratios are shown to significantly differ for the two projectiles. These data are used to test theoretical calculations.

Infinite Randomness And Quantum Griffiths Effects In A Classical System: The Randomly Layered Heisenberg Magnet, Priyanka Mohan, Rajesh Narayanan, Thomas Vojta

We investigate the phase transition in a three-dimensional classical Heisenberg magnet with planar defects, i.e., disorder perfectly correlated in two dimensions. By applying a strong-disorder renormalization group, we show that the critical point has exotic infinite-randomness character. It is accompanied by strong power-law Griffiths singularities. We compute various thermodynamic observables paying particular attention to finite-size effects relevant for an experimental verification of our theory. We also study the critical dynamics within a Langevin equation approach and find it extremely slow. At the critical point, the autocorrelation function decays only logarithmically with time while it follows a nonuniversal power law in …

The concept of a residuated mapping relates to the concept of Galois connections; both arise in the theory of partially ordered sets. They have been applied in mathematical theories (e.g., category theory and formal concept analysis) and in theoretical computer science. The computation of residuated approximations between two lattices is influenced by lattice properties, e.g. distributivity.

Energy exchange between electrons and phonons in metal provides the best example in describing non-equilibrium heating during the ultrafast transient. In times comparable to the thermalization and relaxation time of electrons and phonons, which are in the range of a few to several tens of picoseconds, heat continuously flows from hot electrons to cold phonons through mutual collisions. Consequently, electron temperature continuously decreases whereas phonon temperature continuously increases until thermal equilibrium is reached. Producing thematic coral reef benthic habitat maps from single-beam acoustic backscatter has been hindered by uncertainties in interpreting the acoustic energy parameters E1 (~roughness) and E2 (~hardness), typically limiting such maps to sediment classification schemes. In this study acoustic interpretation was guided by high-resolution LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) bathymetry. Each acoustic record, acquired from a BioSonics DT-X echosounder and multiplexed 38 and 418 kHz transducers, was paired with a spatially-coincident value of a LIDAR-derived proxy for topographic complexity (Reef-Volume) and its membership to one of eight LIDAR-delineated benthic habitat classes. ABSTRACT: As a secondary sexual trait that can increase reproductive success, ornamentation is believed to be costly for organisms to acquire and possess. This study investigates possible costs of ornamentation on wolf spider foraging by comparing foraging abilities of two male forms that differ in ornamentation upon maturation. The two male forms, found syntopically in a mixed population in Mississippi, USA, resemble two sibling species: Schizocosa ocreata, in which males develop large black brushes on their forelegs upon maturation, and Schizocosa rovneri, in which males lack ornamentation following maturation. ABSTRACT This thesis will determine if there is a discrepancy between how literature defines conservation, preservation, and restoration, and how natural resource professionals define these terms. Interviews were conducted with six professionals from six different agencies that deal with natural resources. These agencies consisted of both government and non-government groups. This study looked at several aspects of the programs that included the diversion rates, per capita ratios of materials recycled and disposed, and the average net costs of waste disposal and waste diversion. In this paper, a combined kinematic/torque output feedback control law is developed for leader follower-Based formation control using backstepping to accommodate the dynamics of the robots and the formation in contrast with kinematic-Based formation controllers. a neural network (NN) is introduced to approximate the dynamics of the follower and its leader using online weight tuning. Furthermore, a novel NN observer is designed to estimate the linear and angular velocities of both the follower robot and its leader. In this paper, we present a Non-Bayesian conditioning rule for belief revision. This rule is truly Non-Bayesian in the sense that it doesn’t satisfy the common adopted principle that when a prior belief is Bayesian, after conditioning by X, Bel(X|X) must be equal to one. Our new conditioning rule for belief revision is based on the proportional conflict redistribution rule of combination developed in DSmT (Dezert-Smarandache Theory) which abandons Bayes’ conditioning principle. Such Non-Bayesian conditioning allows to take into account judiciously the level of conflict between the prior belief available and the conditional evidence. Applications of compressed sensing motivate the possibility of using different operators to encode and decode a signal of interest. Since it is clear that the operators cannot be too different, we can view the discrepancy between the two matrices as a perturbation. The stability of L1-minimization and greedy algorithms to recover the signal in the presence of additive noise is by now well-known. Recently however, work has been done to analyze these methods with noise in the measurement matrix, which generates a multiplicative noise term. We demonstrate a simple greedy algorithm that can reliably recover a vector v ?? ??d from incomplete and inaccurate measurements x = ??v + e. Here, ?? is a N x d measurement matrix with Nv with O(n) nonzeros from its inaccurate measurements x in at most n iterations, where each iteration amounts to solving a least squares problem. The noise level of the recovery is proportional to ??{logn} ||e||2. In particular, if the error term e vanishes the reconstruction is exact.

The interaction paradigm offered by most contemporary Web Information Systems is a search-and-sift paradigm in which users manually seek information using hyperlinked documents. This paradigm is derived from a document-centric model that gives users minimal support for scanning through high volumes of text. We present a novel information exploration paradigm based on a data-centric view of corpora, along with a prototype implementation that demonstrates the value in content-driven navigation. We leverage semantic metadata to link data in documents by exploiting named relationships between entities.
