Effect Of Nanoscale Confinement On Glass Transition Of Polystyrene Domains From Self-Assembly Of Block Copolymers, C. G. Robertson, T. E. Hogan, M. Rackaitis, Judit D. Puskas, X. Wang Mar 2010

Effect Of Nanoscale Confinement On Glass Transition Of Polystyrene Domains From Self-Assembly Of Block Copolymers, C. G. Robertson, T. E. Hogan, M. Rackaitis, Judit D. Puskas, X. Wang

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

The understanding of size-dependent properties is key to the implementation of nanotechnology. One controversial and unresolved topic is the influence of characteristic size on the glass transition temperature (T(g)) for ultrathin films and other nanoscale geometries. We show that T(g) does depend on size for polystyrene spherical domains with diameters from 20 to 70 nm which are formed from phase separation of diblock copolymers containing a poly(styrene-co-butadiene) soft block and a polystyrene hard block. A comparison of our data with published results on other block copolymer systems indicates that the size dependence of T(g) is a consequence of diffuse interfaces …

Central New York Varve Chronology: A Suggestion For Quaternary Geologists, Thomas Bradley Walker Mar 2010

Central New York Varve Chronology: A Suggestion For Quaternary Geologists, Thomas Bradley Walker

Thomas Bradley Walker

Work done to build a chronology of deglaciation using varves has been the focus of a number of researchers in New England for many years. The locations employed to build their timeline have been quite useful to date. However, New England is not the only place in the Northeast conducive to studying the last deglaciation of North America. The discovery of a set of ice proximal varves in an ancient glacial lake, now a swamp, in Oswego County, central New York, has shown that some locations outside of New England would be suitable for similar studies. The land having been …

Measuring Variations Of Mimicry By Means Of Prosodic Cues In Task-Based Scenarios And Conversational Speech, Brian Vaughan, Celine De Looze Mar 2010

Measuring Variations Of Mimicry By Means Of Prosodic Cues In Task-Based Scenarios And Conversational Speech, Brian Vaughan, Celine De Looze

Other resources

Here, we address the measurement of mimicry, that is when speakers’ speech variations look like parallel patterns.

As a definition of mimicry, we often read in the literature description such as mimicry is “The situation where the observed behaviours of two inter-actants although dissimilar at the start of the interaction are moving towards behavioral matching”. These types of descriptions imply that mimicry is a linear phenomenon and that speakers tend to imitate over time. However, it can be assumed, especially when studying spontaneous speech, that there are rather phases of mimicry and non-mimicry and that mimicry should be rather …

Investigation Of The Thermal Degradation Of Polyurea: The Effect Of Ammonium Polyphosphate And Expandable Graphite, Walid Awad, Charles A. Wilkie Mar 2010

Investigation Of The Thermal Degradation Of Polyurea: The Effect Of Ammonium Polyphosphate And Expandable Graphite, Walid Awad, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Polyurea was compounded with ammonium polyphosphate and expandable graphite and the morphology was studied by atomic force microscopy. The thermal degradation of polyurea and polyurea compounded with the additives has been investigated using thermogravimetry coupled with Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The study of the thermal degradation and the parameters affecting the thermal stability of PU is essential in order to effectively design flame retarded polyurea. In general, thermal decomposition of polyurea occurs in two steps assigned to the degradation of the hard segment and soft segment, respectively. Adding these additives accelerates the decomposition reaction of polyurea. However, …

Characterizing The 410 Km Discontinuity Low‐Velocity Layer Beneath The La Ristra Array In The North American Southwest, John J. Jasbinsek, Ken G. Dueker, Steven M. Hansen Mar 2010

Characterizing The 410 Km Discontinuity Low‐Velocity Layer Beneath The La Ristra Array In The North American Southwest, John J. Jasbinsek, Ken G. Dueker, Steven M. Hansen

Physics

Receiver functions recorded by the 54-station 920 km long Program for Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere–Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology Colorado Plateau/Rio Grande Rift Seismic Transect Experiment (LA RISTRA) line array display a pervasive negative polarity P to S conversion (Pds) arrival preceding the positive polarity 410 km discontinuity arrival. These arrivals are modeled as a low-velocity layer atop the 410 km discontinuity (410-LVL) and are inverted for a velocity profile via a grid search using a five-parameter linear gradient velocity model. Model parameter likelihood and correlations are assessed via calculation of one- and two-dimensional marginal …

Assessing The Potential To Detect Oil Spills In And Under Snow Using Airborne Ground-Penetrating Radar, John H. Bradford, David F. Dickens, Per Johan Brandvik Mar 2010

Assessing The Potential To Detect Oil Spills In And Under Snow Using Airborne Ground-Penetrating Radar, John H. Bradford, David F. Dickens, Per Johan Brandvik

CGISS Publications and Presentations

With recent increased interest in oil and gas exploration and development in the Arctic comes increased potential for an accidental hydrocarbon release into the cryosphere, including within and at the base of snow. There is a critical need to develop effective and reliable methods for detecting such spills. Numerical modeling shows that ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is sensitive to the presence of oil in the snow pack over a broad range of snow densities and oil types. Oil spills from the surface drain through the snow by the mechanisms of unsaturated flow and form geometrically complex distributions that are controlled by …

Reconstructability Analysis Of Elementary Cellular Automata, Martin Zwick, Hui Shi Mar 2010

Reconstructability Analysis Of Elementary Cellular Automata, Martin Zwick, Hui Shi

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Reconstructability analysis is a method to determine whether a multivariate relation, defined set- or information-theoretically, is decomposable with or without loss (reduction in constraint) into lower ordinality relations. Set-theoretic reconstructability analysis (SRA) is used to characterize the mappings of elementary cellular automata. The degree of lossless decomposition possible for each mapping is more effective than the λ parameter (Walker & Ashby, Langton) as a predictor of chaotic dynamics.

Complete SRA yields not only the simplest lossless structure but also a vector of losses of all decomposed structures, indexed by parameter, τ. This vector subsumes λ, Wuensche’s Z parameter, and Walker …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

New δ13C data are presented from 10 coral skeletons collected from Florida and elsewhere in the Caribbean (Dominica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Belize). These corals range from 96 to 200 years in age and were collected between 1976 and 2002. The change in the δ13C of the skeletons from these corals between 1900 and 1990 has been compared with 27 other published coral records from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. The new data presented here make possible, for the first time, a global comparison of rates of change in the δ13C value …

Model-Based Methods For Linking Web Service Choreography And Orchestration, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Geguang Pu, Tian Huat Tan Mar 2010

Model-Based Methods For Linking Web Service Choreography And Orchestration, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Geguang Pu, Tian Huat Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, many Web service composition languages have been proposed. Web service choreography describes collaboration protocols of cooperating Web service participants from a global view. Web service orchestration describes collaboration of the Web services in predefined patterns based on local decision about their interactions with one another at the message/execution level. In this work, we present model-based methods to close the gap between the two views. Building on the strength of model checking techniques, Web service choreography and orchestration are verified against temporal properties or against each other (to show that they are consistent). Specialized optimization techniques are developed …

Role Of Members Of The Phosducin Gene Family In Protein Translation And Folding, Nana Sono-Koree Mar 2010

Role Of Members Of The Phosducin Gene Family In Protein Translation And Folding, Nana Sono-Koree

Theses and Dissertations

G proteins regulate various physiological processes by way of transducing a wide variety of signals ranging from hormonal to sensory stimuli. Malfunctions in G protein signaling lead to numerous diseases. G protein signaling begins with binding of a ligand to a G protein-coupled receptor resulting in a conformational change that leads to the exchange of a GDP for a GTP on G α. The GTP bound α subunit dissociates for its stable Gβγ dimer partner. G α-GTP and Gβγ control the activity of effector enzymes and ion channels that ultimately orchestrate the cellular response to stimulus. Current reports have shown …

Monitoring Relative Abundance Of American Shad In Virginia Rivers 2009 Annual Report, John E. Olney, Brian Watkins, Eric J. Hilton Mar 2010

Monitoring Relative Abundance Of American Shad In Virginia Rivers 2009 Annual Report, John E. Olney, Brian Watkins, Eric J. Hilton

Reports

Concern about the decline in landings of American shad (Alosa sapidissima) along the Atlantic coast prompted the development of an interstate fisheries management plan (FMP) under the auspices of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Management Program (ASMFC 1999). Legislation enables imposition of federal sanctions on fishing in those states that fail to comply with the FMP. To be in compliance, coastal states are required to implement and maintain fishery-dependent and fishery-independent monitoring programs as specified by the FMP. For Virginia, these requirements include spawning stock assessments, the collection of biological data on the spawning run (e.g., age-structure, sex ratio, and …

New Precision Orbits Of Bright Double-Lined Spectroscopic Binaries. Iv. 66 Andromedae, Hr 6979, And Hr 9059, Francis C. Fekel, Jocelyn Tomkin, Michael H. Williamson

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have determined improved spectroscopic orbits for three double-lined binaries, 66 And (F4 V), HR 6979 (Am), and HR 9059 (F5 IV) using radial velocities from the 2.1 m telescope at McDonald Observatory, the coudé feed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, and 2 m telescope at Fairborn Observatory. The orbital periods range from 11.0 to 14.3 days, and all three systems have eccentric orbits. The new orbital dimensions (a1 sin i and a2 sin i) and minimum masses (m1 sin3 i and m2 sin3 i) have accuracies of 0.2% or better. All six components of the three binary systems …

Testing Models Related To The Laramide Uplift Of The Uinta Mountains And Geologic Mapping Of The Jessen Butte 7.5 Minute Quadrangle, Dagget County, Utah And Sweetwater County, Wyoming, Coreen Hurst

Theses and Dissertations

Geologic mapping of the Jessen Butte 7.5 minute quadrangle and the gathering of structural data throughout the quadrangle was used to determine the paleostress regime during the Laramide Orogeny along the north flank of the Uinta Mountains. The Henrys Fork thrust fault and the Uinta thrust fault are major north bounding faults and within the Jessen Butte quadrangle these faults transfer deformation from one to the other. The Jessen Butte thrust fault is a fault splay that splits off from the Henrys Fork thrust fault. Complex fold geometries were created by the interaction of the faults. Bedding plane orientation, mode …

Characterization Of Optical Constants For Uranium From 10 To 47 Nm, Nicole Brimhall, Nicholas Herrick, David D. Allred, R. Steven Turley, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross Mar 2010

Characterization Of Optical Constants For Uranium From 10 To 47 Nm, Nicole Brimhall, Nicholas Herrick, David D. Allred, R. Steven Turley, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross

Faculty Publications

We use a laser high-harmonics-based extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) polarimeter to determine the optical constants of elemental uranium in the wavelength range from 10 to 47 nm. The constants are extracted from the measure ratio of p-polarized to s-polarized reflectance from a thin uranium film deposited in situ. The film thickness is inferred from a spectroscopic ellipsometry measurement of the sample after complete oxidation in room air. Uranium has been used as a high-reflectance material in the EUV. However, difficulties with oxidation prevented its careful characterization previous to this study. We find that measured optical constants for uranium vary significantly from previous …

Parametric Lp Analysis, Allen Holder Mar 2010

Parametric Lp Analysis, Allen Holder

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Parametric linear programming is the study of how optimal properties depend on data parametrizations. The study is nearly as old as the field of linear programming itself, and it is important since it highlights how a problem changes as what is often estimated data varies. We present what is a modern perspective on the classical analysis of the objective value's response to parametrizations in the right-hand side and cost vector. We also mention a few applications and provide citations for further study

Temporal Changes In The Parameters Of Statistical Distribution Of Journal Impact Factor, Sudhanshu K. Mishra Mar 2010

Temporal Changes In The Parameters Of Statistical Distribution Of Journal Impact Factor, Sudhanshu K. Mishra

Sudhanshu K Mishra

Statistical distribution of Journal Impact Factor (JIF) is characteristically asymmetric and non-mesokurtic. Even the distribution of log10(JIF) exhibits conspicuous skewness and non-mesokurticity. In this paper we estimate the parameters of Johnson SU distribution fitting to the log10(JIF) data for 10 years, 1999 through 2008, and study the temporal variations in those estimated parameters. We also study ‘over-the-samples stability’ in the estimated parameters for each year by the method of re-sampling close to bootstrapping. It has been found that log10(JIF) is Pearson-IV distributed. Johnson SU distribution fits very well to the data and yields parameters stable over the samples. We conclude …

An Algorithm For Wavelet–Based Elemental Spectrum Analysis, Bruce Kessler Mar 2010

An Algorithm For Wavelet–Based Elemental Spectrum Analysis, Bruce Kessler

Bruce Kessler

At the previous Approximation Theory XII meeting, I discussed some preliminary work with the Applied Physics Institute at Western Kentucky University in using multiwavelets to provide an objective analysis of gamma-ray spectrum generated from fast neutron bombardment of objects, for the purpose of identifying the elemental composition of the object. The method discussed at the time worked moderately well with the limited amount of data provided, but subsequent use with data sets of different compounds and with different detectors brought to light serious flaws with its implementation.

This talk will illustrate those issues and will address how they have been …

Death Of A Cluster: The Destruction Of M67 As Seen By The Sloan Digital Sky Survey, James R. A. Davenport, Eric L. Sandquist

Physics & Astronomy

We probe the spatial and dynamical structure of the old open cluster M67 using photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's sixth data release. Making use of an optimal contrast, or matched filter, algorithm, we map the distribution of high probability members of M67. We find an extended and elongated halo of likely members to a radius of nearly 60'. Our measured core radius of R core = 824 ± 060 is somewhat larger than that of previous estimates. We attribute the larger core radius measurement to the SDSS probing lower mass main sequence stars than has been done …

Hr 7355 - Another Rapidly Braking He-Strong Cp Star?, Zdeněk Mikulášek, Jiří Krtička, Gregory W. Henry, S. N. De Villiers, Ernst Paunzen, Miloslav Zejda

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Context. Strong meridional mixing induced by rapid rotation is one reason why all hot main-sequence stars are not chemically peculiar. However, the finding that the He-strong CP star HR 7355 is a rapid rotator complicates this concept.
Aims. Our goal is to explain the observed behaviour of HR 7355 based on period analysis of all available photometry.
Methods. Over two years, we acquired 114 new BV observations of HR 7355 at observatories in Arizona, U.S.A and Cape Town, South Africa. We performed period analyses of the new observations along with new analyses of 732 archival measurements from the Hipparcos and …

Maximizing Strike Planning Efficiency For A Given Class Of Targets, Necip Dirik Mar 2010

Maximizing Strike Planning Efficiency For A Given Class Of Targets, Necip Dirik

Theses and Dissertations

Strike planning is one of the fundamental tasks of the Turkish Air Force and involves assignment of strike aircraft to targets with a maximum level of efficiency. Therefore, planning an optimal strike plan based on the preferences of the decision maker is crucial. The efficiency of the strike plan in this research implies attacking the maximum number of targets while considering target priority and the desired level of damage on each target. Another objective is to minimize the cost of the plan. This research develops an exact model that maximizes the efficiency of the strike plan using LINGO with Excel …

Positron Annihilation Ratio Spectroscopy (Psars) Applied To Positronium Formation Studies, Robert C. Slaughter Mar 2010

Positron Annihilation Ratio Spectroscopy (Psars) Applied To Positronium Formation Studies, Robert C. Slaughter

Theses and Dissertations

A Positron Annihilation of Radiation Spectrometer (PsARS) was developed and characterized. PsARS spectroscopy as well as digital Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) was applied to measure positronium formation on gold nanoparticles deposited through an evaporative method onto a thin capillary tube. This gold coated capillary tube was designed to be used for positronium lifetime studies in local electric field experiments. High local electric fields can polarize a positron-electron pair, which may result in an extended lifetime of the positron. These fields may be created through the interaction of an external electric field with silver nanoparticles deposited onto the surface of …

Optical Caustics Observed In Light Scattered By An Oblate Spheroid, James A. Lock, Feng Xu Mar 2010

Optical Caustics Observed In Light Scattered By An Oblate Spheroid, James A. Lock, Feng Xu

Physics Faculty Publications

The electromagnetic fields scattered when a plane wave is incident on an oblate spheroid in the side-on orientation may be calculated using a generalization of Mie theory, and the results may be decomposed in a Debye series expansion. A number of optical caustics are observed in the computed scattered intensity for the one internal reflection portion of the Debye series for scattering angles in the vicinity of the first-order rainbow, and are analyzed in terms of the rainbow, transverse cusp, and hyperbolic umbilic caustics of catastrophe optics. The specific features of these three caustics are described, as is their assembly …

The M•–Σ* Relation Derived From Sphere Of Influence Arguments, Daniel P. Batcheldor Mar 2010

The M•–Σ* Relation Derived From Sphere Of Influence Arguments, Daniel P. Batcheldor

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The observed relation between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass (M•) and bulge stellar velocity dispersion (σ*) is described by log M• = α + βlog(σ*/200 km s-1). As this relation has important implications for models of galaxy and SMBH formation and evolution, there continues to be great interest in adding to the M• catalog. The "sphere of influence" (ri) argument uses spatial resolution to exclude some M• estimates and pre-select additional galaxies for further SMBH studies. This Letter quantifies the effects of applying the ri argument to a population of galaxies and SMBHs that do not follow the M•–σ* relation. …
