The Asymmetric Phase-Transfer Catalyzed Alkylation Of Imidazolyl Ketones And Aryl Acetates And Their Applications To Total Synthesis, Michael Andrew Christiansen
The Asymmetric Phase-Transfer Catalyzed Alkylation Of Imidazolyl Ketones And Aryl Acetates And Their Applications To Total Synthesis, Michael Andrew Christiansen
Theses and Dissertations
Phase-transfer catalysts derived from the cinchona alkaloids cinchonine and cinchonidine are widely used in the asymmetric alkylation of substrates bearing moieties that resonance stabilize their enolates. The investigation of α-oxygenated esters revealed decreased α-proton acidity, indicating the oxygen's overall destabilizing effect on enolates by electron-pair repulsion. Alkylation of α-oxygenated aryl ketones with various alkyl halides proved successful with a cinchonidine catalyst, giving products with high yield and enantioselectivity. The resulting compounds were converted to esters through modified Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. Alkylation with indolyl electrophiles gave products that underwent decomposition under Baeyer-Villiger conditions. Alternative N-methylimidazolyl ketones were explored. Alkylated imidazolyl ketones, obtained …
An Algorithm For Wavelet–Based Elemental Spectrum Analysis, Bruce Kessler
An Algorithm For Wavelet–Based Elemental Spectrum Analysis, Bruce Kessler
Mathematics Faculty Publications
At the previous Approximation Theory XII meeting, I discussed some preliminary work with the Applied Physics Institute at Western Kentucky University in using multiwavelets to provide an objective analysis of gamma-ray spectrum generated from fast neutron bombardment of objects, for the purpose of identifying the elemental composition of the object. The method discussed at the time worked moderately well with the limited amount of data provided, but subsequent use with data sets of different compounds and with different detectors brought to light serious flaws with its implementation.
This talk will illustrate those issues and will address how they have been …
A Bayesian Decision Theoretical Approach To Supervised Learning, Selective Sampling, And Empirical Function Optimization, James Lamond Carroll
A Bayesian Decision Theoretical Approach To Supervised Learning, Selective Sampling, And Empirical Function Optimization, James Lamond Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
Many have used the principles of statistics and Bayesian decision theory to model specific learning problems. It is less common to see models of the processes of learning in general. One exception is the model of the supervised learning process known as the "Extended Bayesian Formalism" or EBF. This model is descriptive, in that it can describe and compare learning algorithms. Thus the EBF is capable of modeling both effective and ineffective learning algorithms. We extend the EBF to model un-supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, supervised learning, and empirical function optimization. We also generalize the utility model of the EBF to …
Convenient Decentralized Authentication Using Passwords, Timothy W. Van Der Horst
Convenient Decentralized Authentication Using Passwords, Timothy W. Van Der Horst
Theses and Dissertations
Passwords are a very convenient way to authenticate. In terms of simplicity and portability they are very difficult to match. Nevertheless, current password-based login mechanisms are vulnerable to phishing attacks and typically require users to create and manage a new password for each of their accounts. This research investigates the potential for indirect/decentralized approaches to improve password-based authentication. Adoption of a decentralized authentication mechanism requires the agreement between users and service providers on a trusted third party that vouches for users' identities. Email providers are the de facto trusted third parties on the Internet. Proof of email address ownership is …
Ultrashort-Pulse Propagation Through Free-Carrier Plasmas, Jeremy Gulley, William Dennis
Ultrashort-Pulse Propagation Through Free-Carrier Plasmas, Jeremy Gulley, William Dennis
Jeremy R. Gulley
The past decade has seen frequent use of a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation to describe ultrashort pulse propagation in materials where free-carrier plasmas are present. The optical contribution from the resulting free-current densities in this equation is often described using a classical Drude model. However, the ultimate form of this contribution in the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation is somewhat inconsistent in the literature. We clarify this ambiguity by deriving the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation from the classical wave equation containing a free-current density contribution. The Drude model is then used to obtain an expression for the complex free-carrier current density …

Prior evidence supporting the direct observation of phosphorane intermediates in enzymatic phosphoryl transfer reactions was based on the interpretation of electron density corresponding to trigonal species bridging the donor and acceptor atoms. Close examination of the crystalline state of β-phosphoglucomutase, the archetypal phosphorane intermediate-containing enzyme, reveals that the trigonal species is not PO−3 , but is MgF−3 (trifluoromagnesate). Although MgF−3 complexes are transition state analogues rather than phosphoryl group transfer reaction intermediates, the presence of fluorine nuclei in near-transition state conformations offers new opportunities to explore the nature of the interactions, in particular the independent measures of local electrostatic and …

Brown School Faculty Publications
This paper presents findings on conditions of healthcare delivery in Afghanistan. There is an ongoing debate about barriers to healthcare in low-income as well as fragile states. In 2002, the Government of Afghanistan established a Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS), contracting primary healthcare delivery to non-state providers. The priority was to give access to the most vulnerable groups: women, children, disabled persons, and the poorest households. In 2005, we conducted a nationwide survey, and using a logistic regression model, investigated provider choice. We also measured associations between perceived availability and usefulness of healthcare providers. Our results indicate that the …
Integrating Facies Analysis, Terrestrial Sequence Stratigraphy, And The First Detrital Zircon (U-Pb) Ages Of The Twist Gulch Formation, Utah, Usa: Constraining Paleogeography And Chronostratigraphy, Tyson L. Perkes
Theses and Dissertations
The Jurassic Twist Gulch Formation of central Utah was deposited in the active Arapien sub-basin of the Western Cordillera foreland trough. We herein demonstrate the utility of integrating facies analysis, terrestrial sequence stratigraphy, and detrital zircon (U-Pb) ages to improve paleogeographic reconstructions as well as identify regional unconformities, locate fluvial depocenters, and infer sediment supply/accommodation space ratios. Strata of the Twist Gulch Formation in Pigeon Creek Canyon (PCC) near Levan, Utah consists primarily of alluvial deposits, while in Salina Canyon (SC) the Twist Gulch Formation is comprised of a mix of alluvial and marginal marine deposits associated with the Jurassic …
Parameter Estimation And Hypothesis Testing For The Truncated Normal Distribution With Applications To Introductory Statistics Grades, James T. Hattaway
Parameter Estimation And Hypothesis Testing For The Truncated Normal Distribution With Applications To Introductory Statistics Grades, James T. Hattaway
Theses and Dissertations
The normal distribution is a commonly seen distribution in nature, education, and business. Data that are mounded or bell shaped are easily found across various fields of study. Although there is high utility with the normal distribution; often the full range can not be observed. The truncated normal distribution accounts for the inability to observe the full range and allows for inferring back to the original population. Depending on the amount of truncation, the truncated normal has several distinct shapes. A simulation study evaluating the performance of the maximum likelihood estimators and method of moment estimators is conducted and a …

Service-Differentiated And Reliable Communication In Event-Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Yuyan Xue
Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of low-power embedded devices with integrated sensing, computing and wireless communication capabilities. These devices, called sensor nodes or motes, are often battery-powered and deployed in a distributed manner to provide observations on the physical world. Reliably and promptly collecting the sensing data to convey the features of a surveillance area, especially the events of interest, to the sink is one of the most critical requirements of WSN design. However, dynamic wireless channel conditions and the constrained energy resources make it a challenging task to provide the end-to-end performance guarantees in multi-hop WSNs.

Cca-Secure Unidirectional Proxy Re-Encryption In The Adaptive Corruption Model Without Random Oracles, Jian Weng, Minrong Chen, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Kefei Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Proxy re-encryption (PRE), introduced by Blaze, Bleumer and Strauss in Eurocrypt’98, allows a semitrusted proxy to convert a ciphertext originally intended for Alice into an encryption of the same message intended for Bob. PRE has recently drawn great interest, and many interesting PRE schemes have been proposed. However, up to now, it is still an important question to come up with a chosen-ciphertext secure unidirectional PRE in the adaptive corruption model. To address this problem, we propose a new unidirectional PRE scheme, and prove its chosen-ciphertext security in the adaptive corruption model without random oracles. Compared with the best known …

Bayesian And Frequentist Approaches For The Analysis Of Multiple Endpoints Data Resulting From Exposure To Multiple Health Stressors., Epiphanie Nyirabahizi
Theses and Dissertations
In risk analysis, Benchmark dose (BMD)methodology is used to quantify the risk associated with exposure to stressors such as environmental chemicals. It consists of fitting a mathematical model to the exposure data and the BMD is the dose expected to result in a pre-specified response or benchmark response (BMR). Most available exposure data are from single chemical exposure, but living objects are exposed to multiple sources of hazards. Furthermore, in some studies, researchers may observe multiple endpoints on one subject. Statistical approaches to address multiple endpoints problem can be partitioned into a dimension reduction group and a dimension preservative group. …

Interactive Television News, Derek L. Bunn
Theses and Dissertations
We design and evaluate a way to modify television news to make it interactive for viewers. We allow them to get more of what they want and less of what they don't want. This allows news to break constraints imposed by television broadcast schedules. Our solution is to augment the existing news broadcast structure in the following ways: add a video headlines menu, provide on-demand access to additional story content, provide interactive navigation controls between stories, and a control overlay. For news producers we create a video annotation program and process to help create the interactive news. We use the …

Stability Of Choice In The Honey Bee Nest-Site Selection Process, Andrew L. Nevai, Kevin M. Passino, Parthasarathy Srinivasan
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We introduce a pair of compartment models for the honey bee nest-site selection process that lend themselves to analytic methods. The first model represents a swarm of bees deciding whether a site is viable, and the second characterizes its ability to select between two viable sites. We find that the one-site assessment process has two equilibrium states: a disinterested equilibrium (DE) in which the bees show no interest in the site and an interested equilibrium (IE) in which bees show interest. In analogy with epidemic models, we define basic and absolute recruitment numbers (R0R0 and B0B0) as measures of the …

Existing paleogeographic reconstructions indicate that the northern Antarctic Peninsula was central to several Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic events that have implications for ocean circulation and continental margin evolution. To evaluate the exhumational record of these processes, we collected new samples and measured fission track and (U‐Th)/He cooling ages of apatite and zircon from 13 Jurassic and Cretaceous granitoids in western Graham Land between the northern tip of the peninsula and the Antarctic Circle. Apatite He data reveal distinct ages and systematic age patterns north and south of Anvers Island, near the midpoint of the study area: To the south, apatite …

A sequence of real numbers (xn) is Benford if the significands, i.e. the fraction parts in the floating-point representation of (xn) are distributed logarithmically. Similarly, a discrete-time irreducible and aperiodic finite-state Markov chain with probability transition matrix P and limiting matrix P* is Benford if every component of both sequences of matrices (Pn - P*) and (Pn+1-Pn) is Benford or eventually zero. Using recent tools that established Benford behavior both for Newton's method and for finite-dimensional linear maps, via the classical theories of uniform distribution modulo 1 …

U.S.-Globec: Nep Phase Iiib-Cgoa: A Synthesis Of Climate-Forced Variability On Mesoscale Structure In The Cgoa With Direct Comparisons To The Ccs, Andrew C. Thomas
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
A variety of extreme climate events occurred during the period of US GLOBEC monitoring and process studies in the NEP (1997-2004). These provide an unprecedented opportunity to examine a range of climate variability experienced by the coastal Gulf of Alaska (CGOA). By relating these climate events to regional physical and biological observations, using multiple and diverse data sources (GLOBEC observations, historical data sets and reanalyses, satellites, models), we can determine how these events affect mesoscale ocean variability in the CGOA and its related target populations (the primary goal of the NEP program). We can then directly compare these responses to …

Abstract
Background
High-resolution tandem mass spectra can now be readily acquired with hybrid instruments, such as LTQ-Orbitrap and LTQ-FT, in high-throughput shotgun proteomics workflows. The improved spectral quality enables more accurate de novo sequencing for identification of post-translational modifications and amino acid polymorphisms.
Results
In this study, a new de novo sequencing algorithm, called Vonode, has been developed specifically for analysis of such high-resolution tandem mass spectra. To fully exploit the high mass accuracy of these spectra, a unique scoring system is proposed to evaluate sequence tags based primarily on mass accuracy information of fragment ions. Consensus sequence tags were …

Finite Element Approximations For Stokes-Darcy Flow With Beavers-Joseph Interface Conditions, Yanzhao Cao, Max Gunzburger, Xiaolong Hu, Fei Hua, Xiaoming Wang, Weidong Zhao
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Numerical solutions using finite element methods are considered for transient flow in a porous medium coupled to free flow in embedded conduits. Such situations arise, for example, for groundwater flows in karst aquifers. the coupled flow is modeled by the Darcy equation in a porous medium and the Stokes equations in the conduit domain. on the interface between the matrix and conduit, Beavers-Joseph interface conditions, instead of the simplified Beavers-Joseph-Saffman conditions, are imposed. Convergence and error estimates for finite element approximations are obtained. Numerical experiments illustrate the validity of the theoretical results. © 2010 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

This paper describes a method for simulating univariate and multivariate Burr Type III and Type XII distributions with specified correlation matrices. The methodology is based on the derivation of the parametric forms of a pdf and cdf for this family of distributions. The paper shows how shape parameters can be computed for specified values of skew and kurtosis. It is also demonstrated how to compute percentage points and other measures of central tendency such as the mode, median, and trimmed mean. Examples are provided to demonstrate how this Burr family can be used in the context of distribution fitting using …

Targeted Maximum Likelihood Method For Repeated Measures Semiparametric Regression: Discovery For Transcription Factor Activity, Catherine Tuglus, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In longitudinal and repeated measures data analysis, often the goal is to determine the effect of a treatment or aspect on a particular outcome (e.g. disease progression). We consider semiparametric repeated measures regression model, where the parametric component models effect of the variable of interest and any modification by other covariates. The expectation of this parametric component over the other covariates is a measure of variable importance. Here we present a targeted maximum likelihood estimator of the finite dimensional regression parameter, which is easily estimated using standard software for generalized estimating equations. The targeted maximum likelihood method provides double robust …

Depositional Ice Nucleation On Solid Ammonium Sulfate And Glutaric Acid Particles, K. J. Baustian, M. E. Wise, M. A. Tolbert
CUP Faculty Research
Heterogeneous ice nucleation on solid ammonium sulfate and glutaric acid particles was studied using optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Optical microscopy was used to detect selective nucleation events as water vapor was slowly introduced into an environmental sample cell. Particles that nucleated ice were dried via sublimation and examined in detail using Raman spectroscopy. Depositional ice nucleation is highly selective and occurred preferentially on just a few ammonium sulfate and glutaric acid particles in each sample. For freezing temperatures between 214 K and 235 K an average ice saturation ratio of S = 1.10±0.07 for solid ammonium sulfate was observed. …
