Assessment Of Hatchery-Reared Pallid Sturgeon Survival In The Lower Missouri River, Kirk D. Steffensen, Larkin A. Powell, Jeff D. Koch Jan 2010

Assessment Of Hatchery-Reared Pallid Sturgeon Survival In The Lower Missouri River, Kirk D. Steffensen, Larkin A. Powell, Jeff D. Koch

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The population of pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus in the lower Missouri River between Gavins Point Dam (river kilometer [rkm] 1,305.2) and the confluence with the Mississippi River (rkm 0.0) remains imperiled, little to no natural recruitment occurring. Artificial propagation and subsequent population augmentation (i.e., stocking) may be the only viable option for maintaining pallid sturgeon populations in the lower Missouri River in the near term. Because relatively little is known about the ability of hatchery-reared pallid sturgeon to survive, the objective of this study was to quantify survival estimates for hatchery-reared pallid sturgeon stocked into the lower Missouri River. We …

Diagnosis Of Extended Cold-Season Temperature Anomalies In Alaska, Martha Shulski, John Walsh, Eric Stevens, Richard Thoman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

During the early winter of 2002 and late winter of 2007, the Alaskan sector of the North Pacific Ocean region experienced record-breaking temperature anomalies. The duration of these episodes was unusually long, with each lasting more than 1 month: 55 days for the warm anomaly of October–December 2002 and 37 days for the cold anomaly of February–March 2007. Temperature departures over each respective period were the largest for the continental climate of interior Alaska (>10°C) and the smallest for the maritime regions of Alaska (

Powell, Andrew J. Tyre

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Quantifying patterns of nest survival is a first step toward understanding why birds decide when and where to breed. Most studies of nest survival have relied on generalized linear models (GLM) to explore these patterns. However, GLMs require assumptions about the models' structure that might preclude finding nonlinear patterns in survival data. Generalized additive models (GAM) provide a flexible alternative to GLMs for estimating linear and nonlinear patterns in data. Here we present a comparison of GLMs and GAMs for explaining variation in nest-survival data. We used two different model-selection criteria, the Bayes (BIC) and Akaike (AIC) information criteria, to …

Coupling Of Carbon Dioxide And Water Vapor Exchanges Of Irrigated And Rainfed Maize–Soybean Cropping Systems And Water Productivity, Andrew E. Suyker, Shashi B. Verma

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Continuous measurements of CO2 and water vapor exchanges made in three cropping systems (irrigated continuous maize, irrigated maize–soybean rotation, and rainfed maize–soybean rotation) in eastern Nebraska, USA during 6 years are discussed. Close coupling between seasonal distributions of gross primary production (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) were observed in each growing season. Mean growing season totals of GPP in irrigated maize and soybean were 1738 ± 114 and 996 ± 69 g C m−2, respectively (±standard deviation). Corresponding mean values of growing season ET totals were 545 ± 27 and 454 ± 23 mm, respectively. Irrigation affected GPP …

Niobrara National Scenic River Condition Assessment, Sunil Narumalani, Gary D. Willson, Christine K. Lockert, Paul B. T. Merani

United States National Park Service: Publications

Executive Summary

Niobrara National Scenic River spans a 122-km (76-mile) long reach of the Niobrara River in rural, north-central Nebraska. The scenic river encompasses 9,338 ha (23,074 acres) of land and water, all of which is in private ownership, except for about 320 ha (790 acres). Because the scenic river does not own land, it achieves management goals by coordinating and collaborating with federal, state, and local jurisdictions and private landowners.

The central Niobrara River Valley is often referred to as a “biological crossroads” with plant and animal species representative of northern boreal forest, eastern deciduous forest, rocky mountain coniferous …

A New Perspective On Visual Word Processing Efficiency, Joseph W. Houpt, James T. Townsend Jan 2010

A New Perspective On Visual Word Processing Efficiency, Joseph W. Houpt, James T. Townsend

Joseph W. Houpt

As a fundamental part of our daily lives, visual word processing has received much attention in the psychological literature. Despite the well established perceptual advantages of word and pseudoword context using accuracy, a comparable effect using response times has been elusive. Some researchers continue to question whether the advantage due to word context is perceptual. We use the capacity coefficient, a well established, response time based measure of efficiency to provide evidence of word processing as a particularly efficient perceptual process to complement those results from the accuracy domain.

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Progenitor scenarios for short gamma-ray bursts (short GRBs) include coalescenses of two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, which would necessarily be accompanied by the emission of strong gravitational waves. We present a search for these known gravitational-wave signatures in temporal and directional coincidence with 22 GRBs that had sufficient gravitational-wave data available in multiple instruments during LIGO's fifth science run, S5, and Virgo's first science run, VSR1. We find no statistically significant gravitational-wave candidates within a [ - 5, + 1)s window around the trigger time of any GRB. Using the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U-test, we find no …

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave bursts (GWBs) associated with 137 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by satellite-based gamma-ray experiments during the fifth LIGO science run and first Virgo science run. The data used in this analysis were collected from 2005 November 4 to 2007 October 1, and most of the GRB triggers were from the Swift satellite. The search uses a coherent network analysis method that takes into account the different locations and orientations of the interferometers at the three LIGO-Virgo sites. We find no evidence for GWB signals associated with this sample of GRBs. …

Searches For Gravitational Waves From Known Pulsars With Science Run 5 Ligo Data, B. P. Abbott, R. Abbott, F. Acernese, R. Adhikari, P. Ajith, B. Allen, G. Allen, M. Alshourbagy, R. S. Amin, Rodica Martin Jan 2010

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present a search for gravitational waves from 116 known millisecond and young pulsars using data from the fifth science run of the LIGO detectors. For this search, ephemerides overlapping the run period were obtained for all pulsars using radio and X-ray observations. We demonstrate an updated search method that allows for small uncertainties in the pulsar phase parameters to be included in the search. We report no signal detection from any of the targets and therefore interpret our results as upper limits on the gravitational wave signal strength. The most interesting limits are those for young pulsars. We present …

Synthesis And Uses Of Polycarbonate, Hai Bui Jan 2010

Synthesis And Uses Of Polycarbonate, Hai Bui

Natural Sciences Student Research Presentations

Polycarbonate is one of the most important polymers being used today. Polycarbonate has many important characteristics that prove to be useful in its applications. Some characteristics of polycarbonate are that it is clear, light weight, and durable. The optical properties and the specific weight index of polycarbonate make it ideal for lens material in eyeglasses. There are two main ways of commercially synthesizing polycarbonate from bisphenol A. It can be synthesized through the process of solvent interfacial polymerization or through melt transeterification. Both processes are different and each has its own benefits.

2-(9-AnthrylmethylIdeneAmino)-4-MethylPhenol, Ralph Isovitsch

Chemistry

The title compound, C22H17NO, is a novel Schiff base synthesized via a condensation reaction between 9-anthracenecarboxaldehyde and 2-amino-p-cresol. The asymmetric unit contains two independent molecules that are joined by an O—H⋯OH hydrogen bond. An intramolecular O—H⋯N hydrogen bond occurs in each molecule. π-stacking about inversion centers was observed between adjacent phenol rings [centroid–centroid distance = 3.850 (2) Å] and adjacent anthracene rings [centroid–centroid distance = 3.834 (2) Å]. The C—N=C—C torsion angles between the phenol and anthracene rings are close to 180° with values of 174.06 (15) and 179.85 (14)°.

The Ro(G)-Graded Serre Spectral Sequence, William C. Kronholm

Mathematics

In this paper the Serre spectral sequence of Moerdijk and Svensson is extended from Bredon cohomology to RO(G)RO(G)-graded cohomology for finite groups GG. Special attention is paid to the case G=Z/2G=Z/2 where the spectral sequence is used to compute the cohomology of certain projective bundles and loop spaces.

Early Algebra And Mathematics Specialists, M. K. Murray

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This paper discusses early algebra as it relates to the Mathematics Specialist program. Early algebra is described based on research and readings from the body of literature focused on early algebra. Reasons why early algebra should be emphasized in elementary school mathematics are discussed, followed by a description of the role elementary school Mathematics Specialists must play if schools are to begin to focus on early algebraic instruction. Finally, some suggestions are made for ways the Mathematics Specialist program might encourage more explicitly an early algebraic approach to elementary school mathematics.

Analysis Of The Consistency Of A Mixed Integer Programming-Based Multi-Category Constrained Discriminant Model, J. Paul Brooks, Eva K. Lee Jan 2010

Analysis Of The Consistency Of A Mixed Integer Programming-Based Multi-Category Constrained Discriminant Model, J. Paul Brooks, Eva K. Lee

Statistical Sciences and Operations Research Publications

Classification is concerned with the development of rules for the allocation of observations to groups, and is a fundamental problem in machine learning. Much of previous work on classification models investigates two-group discrimination. Multi-category classification is less-often considered due to the tendency of generalizations of two-group models to produce misclassification rates that are higher than desirable. Indeed, producing “good” two-group classification rules is a challenging task for some applications, and producing good multi-category rules is generally more difficult. Additionally, even when the “optimal” classification rule is known, inter-group misclassification rates may be higher than tolerable for a given classification model. …

Oxidation Of Pdn (N=1–7,10) Clusters Supported On Alumina/Nial(110), R. Robles, Shiv N. Khanna

Physics Publications

First-principles theoretical investigations on the oxidation of Pdn (n=1–7, 10) clusters deposited on alumina/NiAl(110) have been carried out using a gradient-corrected density-functional approach. Our studies indicate that the free Pdn clusters are compact and maintain their compact structures when deposited on the surface, undergoing only small relaxations of the Pd-Pd distance. The clusters bind to the surface via a pair of Pd atoms and with a binding energy of around 1.0 eV. Studies of oxidation through an O2molecule show that O2 occupies sites closer to the surface for Pd1, Pd4, Pd5, and Pd6 while, in other cases, the binding is …

Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of A Bn Sheet Decorated With Hydrogen And Fluorine, Jian Zhou, Qian Wang, Qiang Sun, Puru Jena

Physics Publications

First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory reveal some unusual properties of BN sheet functionalized with hydrogen and fluorine. These properties differ from those of similarly functionalized graphene even though both share the same honeycomb structure. (1) Unlike graphene which undergoes a metal to insulator transition when fully hydrogenated, the band gap of the BN sheet significantly narrows when fully saturated with hydrogen. Furthermore, the band gap of the BN sheet can be tuned from 4.7 to 0.6 eV and the system can be a direct or an indirect semiconductor or even a half-metal depending on surface coverage. (2) Unlike graphene, …
