Synthesis And Conjugation Of Terminal Α-Galactose Containing, Roger Allan Ashmus Jan 2010

Synthesis And Conjugation Of Terminal Α-Galactose Containing, Roger Allan Ashmus

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Over 16 million people in Latin America are infected with the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), the causative agent of Chagas disease, and up to 50,000 infected people die annually due to complications during the chronic stage of the disease. To date, there are no vaccines or effective drugs to treat chronic Chagas disease. It is known that T. cruzi contains cell surface mucin-like glycoproteins with terminal α-galactosyl residues, and it is well established that they are highly immunogenic. The exact structure of the immunogenic carbohydrate epitopes, however, remains unknown. To determine which epitopes have the ability to interact …

Results Of New Petrologic And Remote Sensing Studies In The Big Bend Region, Stevan Christian Benker Jan 2010

Results Of New Petrologic And Remote Sensing Studies In The Big Bend Region, Stevan Christian Benker

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The initial section of this manuscript involves the South Rim Formation, a series of 32.2-32 Ma comenditic quartz trachytic-rhyolitic volcanics and associated intrusives, erupted and was emplaced in Big Bend National Park, Texas. Magmatic parameters have only been interpreted for one of the two diverse petrogenetic suites comprising this formation. Here, new mineralogic data for the South Rim Formation rocks are presented. Magmatic parameters interpreted from these data assist in deciphering lithospheric characteristics during the mid-Tertiary.

Results indicate low temperatures (< 750 °C), reduced conditions (generally below the FMQ buffer), and low pressures (≤ 100 MPa) associated with South Rim Formation magmatism with slight conditional differences between the two suites. Newly discovered fayalite microphenocrysts allowed determination of oxygen fugacity values (between -0.14 and -0.25 ΔFMQ over temperature ranges of 680-700 °C), via mineral equilibria based QUILF95 calculations, for Emory Peak Suite.

Petrologic information is correlated with structural evidence from Trans-Pecos Texas and adjacent regions to evaluate debated timing of tectonic …

Pressure Induced Dynamical Instabilities In Body Center Cubic Crystals, Oscar Guerrero Jan 2010

Pressure Induced Dynamical Instabilities In Body Center Cubic Crystals, Oscar Guerrero

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Large-scale atomistic simulations of shock-wave propagation in single crystals exhibit large anisotropies in the elastic-plastic and solid-liquid transitions. Characteristic of this type of simulations are the large strains at which the crystal yields plastically, regardless of crystal orientation. At these large strains, uniaxial deformations, such as those produced in planar shock loading generate dynamical instabilities. We have investigated the directional anisotropy of the elastic limit in bcc crystals, in particular Tantalum (Ta), employing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We show that the elastic - plastic transition in BCC defect-free crystals is caused by the appearance of soft-phonon modes and not via …

What Should Be Done With The Revenues From A Carbon Cap And Auction System?, Robert Costanza, Joshua C. Farley

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

In this article the author discusses the use of the revenues which can be generated from a carbon cap and auction system in the U.S. They believe that auction system will be politically feasible if all individuals share generated revenues equally. A significant fraction from the revenue should pay for related projects like researching and developing renewable energy in developing countries. The shareholders in this atmospheric commons should be both the current and future generations.

Concentrating Solar Power Commercial Application Study: Reducing Water Consumption Of Concentrating Solar Power Electricity Generation, U.S. Department Of Energy

Publications (E)

This report discusses potential methods to reduce water consumption associated with CSP. Four main concentrating solar power technologies are described in this report: parabolic troughs, linear Fresnel, power towers, and dish/engine. Parabolic troughs are the most commercially available technology. Linear Fresnel and power tower technologies are presently being planned as commercial plants, but none have yet been built in the U.S. The first three of these technologies use the heat collected from the sun to power conventional Rankine steam cycles, similar to those used for coal and nuclear plants. Steam cycle power plants require cooling to function (cooling is needed …

Land Surface Brightness Temperature Modeling Using Solar Insolation, Haroon Stephen, Sajjad Ahmad, Thomas C. Piechota Jan 2010

Land Surface Brightness Temperature Modeling Using Solar Insolation, Haroon Stephen, Sajjad Ahmad, Thomas C. Piechota

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

Retrieval of land surface emissivity and temperature from microwave brightness temperature data is a complex problem. The diurnal variation of temperature due to the diurnal cycle of solar radiation and weather conditions makes this problem even more challenging. In this paper, we use solar radiation in modeling the temporal variation of the brightness temperature state of the surface. Solar insolation modeling is used to estimate the diurnal variation of land surface brightness temperature. Solar radiation and brightness temperature are linked through temperature of the surface which is derived based on the radiation balance equation. The temperature state model behaves consistent …

Native Species Interactions With Red Brome: Suggestions For Burn-Area Revegetation, Scott R. Abella Jan 2010

Native Species Interactions With Red Brome: Suggestions For Burn-Area Revegetation, Scott R. Abella

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

In deserts, native perennial plants often actually facilitate the establishment of exotic annual grasses. One of our focal areas of research is to identify native species for use in revegetation projects that reduce the establishment of exotic annual grasses, or at least do not strongly facilitate exotic species establishment. An initial research effort involving a competition experiment of red brome with native species and a correlational field study of brome distribution among native perennial plants is in press with the journal Invasive Plant Science and Management.

Design, Synthesis And Characterization Of Oriented Glyco-Affinity Macroligands For Glyco-Capturing, Glycomics And Glycoproteomics Applications, Srinivas Chalagalla

ETD Archive

Cell surface carbohydrates existing as parts of glycoproteins, glycolipids, and other conjugates present the first information about cell to the outside world and are intimately involved in various biological events such as intercellular communication, and molecular and cellular targeting. However, mechanisms of most processes at the molecular level are still unclear. Therefore, it is very important to develop carbohydrate-specific binding molecules for rapid, efficient, sensitive purification and accurate analysis of complex carbohydrate structures as well as their functions. Furthermore, carbohydrate-specific binding molecules can be expected to be used in medical diagnostic applications for carbohydrate biomarkers. In this thesis study, oriented …

Interactions Among Top-Down Regulators In A Temperate Forest Floor Ecosystem;Effects On Macrofauna, Mesofauna, Microbes And Litter Decay, Cari-Ann M. Hickerson

ETD Archive

High species diversity and complexity of forest-floor food webs present a challenge for understanding the role of species interactions (e.g. competition and predation) as regulatory mechanisms for ecosystem processes such as decomposition and nutrient cycling. In particular, we understand very little about the roles of forest-floor predators in regulating diversity and abundance of lower trophic levels and ecosystem processes. However, ecological theory and several studies suggest that interactions among intraguild predators (IGP) may be important controls of diversity and abundance of organisms and detritus in lower trophic levels within food webs. A key prediction is that interactions among predators weaken …

Effects Of Forest Edges, Exotic Ants And Nonnative Plants On Local Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Diversity In Urban Forest Fragments Of Northeastern Ohio, Kaloyan Ivanov

ETD Archive

Urbanization has resulted in massive transformation of natural habitats with profound effects on biodiversity. Addressing the problems associated with anthropogenic deterioration of the environment requires solid understanding of the factors driving these changes. Habitat patch size, edge effects, and the presence of invasive species are among the key features of the urban landscape affecting local communities. My study focused on the effects of habitat edges, the exotic ant Nylanderia flavipes, and the invasive herb garlic mustard on local ant diversity in deciduous forest fragments of northeastern Ohio. In addition, I explored the value of common ant collecting techniques for estimating …

Dna Mutation/Methylation Screening Method For Colon Cancer Screening, Wei Meng Jan 2010

Dna Mutation/Methylation Screening Method For Colon Cancer Screening, Wei Meng

ETD Archive

Cancer is a result of unregulated cell growth. For all types of cancer currently studied, the transition from a healthy cell to a malignant tumor cell is a step-by-step process which requires mutation in at least several oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes together. Another cancer early event is DNA methylation. Cancer-related DNA methylation focuses on promoter hypermethylation of the certain genes. The DNA mutation and methylation profile can serve as biomarkers for diagnosing early stage of cancer. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer type in the United States and has been well studied. The essential mechanism of cancer …

Molecular Basis Of The Role Of Kindlin 2 In Cell Adhesion, Hettiarachchige Dhanuja Deepamalee Perera

ETD Archive

Kindlins are a novel family of cytoskeleton proteins that plays an important role in the activation of heterodimeric integrin transmembrane receptors. These receptors play a vital role in cell adhesion, cell migration and other cellular processes. The Kindlin protein family consists of three homologous proteins, Kindlin 1, 2 and 3 with differential tissue distribution and varying expression levels in human. Mutations of Kindlin 1 protein are clinically linked to Kindler Syndrome. Kindlin 2 knockdown studies have shown embryonic lethality in mouse, but no diseases have been clinically testified. Kindlin 3 mutations are associated with bleeding disorders, e.g. LADIII. Talin is …

An Assessment Of The Evolutionary Stability Of Distyly In Hedyotis Caerulea (Rubiaceae), Dennis Archie Sampson Jan 2010

An Assessment Of The Evolutionary Stability Of Distyly In Hedyotis Caerulea (Rubiaceae), Dennis Archie Sampson

ETD Archive

Distylous species of flowers possess two distinct floral morphs that are generally found in equal numbers in naturally occurring populations. The flower form that has a relatively long style is called a "pin" the form with a short style is a "thrum." Within the distylous mating system, selfing and intramorph mating are prevented due to the spatial separation of stigmas and anthers and by a self-incompatibility system that is inherited along with the dimorphic floral structure and ancillary polymorphisms. However, a breakdown of distyly has been documented in several families, either through the development of completely separate sexes (dioecy), or, …

Mapping Riparian Vegetation In The Lower Colorado River Using Low Resolution Satellite Imagery, Kelly J. Amundsen Jan 2010

Mapping Riparian Vegetation In The Lower Colorado River Using Low Resolution Satellite Imagery, Kelly J. Amundsen

ETD Archive

In the Western United States, monitoring water usage is a complex task carried out by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). It may be argued that USBR's greatest challenge is equitably distributing the waters of the Colorado River, particularly the Lower Colorado River, where water rights have been established and contested several times. To help meet the demands of water management in the Lower Colorado River Basin, USBR estimates the amount of water lost from the basin each year via evapo-transpiration by riparian vegetation in the Lower Colorado River riparian zone. Key components of those estimates include maps of the …

Study Of Drug Delivery Behavior Through Biomembranes Using Thermal And Bioanalytical Techniques, Hareesha Reddy Venumuddala

ETD Archive

This Master of Science thesis encompasses two projects in chemical pharmaceuticals. The first is a study of excipients and the added new information collected beyond Thermal Gravimetric Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry from Dielectric Analysis. These new properties enhance our global knowledge of excipients by thermal analytical methods. Excipients, the inactive ingredients in formulated drugs, aid different functions of the active pharmacy ingredient, the drugs. Low temperature transitions, by DEA including melting of frozen solvents, e.g. water, are more definitive than observed by low temperature DSC. Millions of dollars are expended annually on pharmaceutical testing to qualify excipients for fully …

Disintegration Of Tablets And Capsules Measured By Isothermal Thermal Mechanical Analysis And Macrophotography, Visweswararao Badipatla

ETD Archive

The current United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) test for tablet and encapsulated drug disintegration does not specify the initial disintegration time and provides limited information on the disintegration process itself. An isothermal Thermal Mechanical Analysis (IsoTMA) method is presented to measure the rate and initial time of drug disintegration, that is, the mechanical collapse of the gelatin capsule or the solid tablet. This method monitors changes in the dimensions of the formulated drugs during their disintegration in a liquid. Dimensional changes can be followed as a function of time, temperature, applied stress and pH. Some of the drugs studied were Olanzapine®, …
