Extra Dimensions And Electroweak Symmetry Breaking, Jong Anly Tan Jan 2010

Extra Dimensions And Electroweak Symmetry Breaking, Jong Anly Tan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In anticipation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which is currently scheduled to start operating in September 2009, Particle physicists have developed various models to predict phenomena that may be observed in the LHC data. One of the ideas that have been developed is warped extra dimensions. The S parameter, one of the electroweak precision observables is predicted by experiments to be less than about 0.1. However, most of the models that try to explain the electroweak symmetry breaking without a Higgs Boson have a large S parameter > 0.2.;We study the possibility of reducing the S parameter in a wared …

Building Efficient Wireless Infrastructures For Pervasive Computing Environments, Bo Sheng Jan 2010

Building Efficient Wireless Infrastructures For Pervasive Computing Environments, Bo Sheng

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Pervasive computing is an emerging concept that thoroughly brings computing devices and the consequent technology into people's daily life and activities. Most of these computing devices are very small, sometimes even "invisible", and often embedded into the objects surrounding people. In addition, these devices usually are not isolated, but networked with each other through wireless channels so that people can easily control and access them. In the architecture of pervasive computing systems, these small and networked computing devices form a wireless infrastructure layer to support various functionalities in the upper application layer.;In practical applications, the wireless infrastructure often plays a …

Applications Of Pattern Classification To Time-Domain Signals, Crystal Ann Bertoncini Jan 2010

Applications Of Pattern Classification To Time-Domain Signals, Crystal Ann Bertoncini

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Many different kinds of physics are used in sensors that produce time-domain signals, such as ultrasonics, acoustics, seismology, and electromagnetics. The waveforms generated by these sensors are used to measure events or detect flaws in applications ranging from industrial to medical and defense-related domains. Interpreting the signals is challenging because of the complicated physics of the interaction of the fields with the materials and structures under study. often the method of interpreting the signal varies by the application, but automatic detection of events in signals is always useful in order to attain results quickly with less human error. One method …

Application Of Information Theory And Statistical Learning To Anomaly Detection, Steven Gianvecchio

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In today's highly networked world, computer intrusions and other attacks area constant threat. The detection of such attacks, especially attacks that are new or previously unknown, is important to secure networks and computers. A major focus of current research efforts in this area is on anomaly detection.;In this dissertation, we explore applications of information theory and statistical learning to anomaly detection. Specifically, we look at two difficult detection problems in network and system security, (1) detecting covert channels, and (2) determining if a user is a human or bot. We link both of these problems to entropy, a measure of …

Adaptive Learning And Cryptography, David Goldenberg Jan 2010

Adaptive Learning And Cryptography, David Goldenberg

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Significant links exist between cryptography and computational learning theory. Cryptographic functions are the usual method of demonstrating significant intractability results in computational learning theory as they can demonstrate that certain problems are hard in a representation independent sense. On the other hand, hard learning problems have been used to create efficient cryptographic protocols such as authentication schemes, pseudo-random permutations and functions, and even public key encryption schemes.;Learning theory / coding theory also impacts cryptography in that it enables cryptographic primitives to deal with the issues of noise or bias in their inputs. Several different constructions of "fuzzy" primitives exist, a …

A Measurement Of The Neutron Electric Form Factor At Very Large Momentum Transfer Using Polarized Electrons Scattering From A Polarized Helium-3 Target, Aidan Michael Kelleher

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Knowledge of the electric and magnetic elastic form factors of the nucleon is essential for an understanding of nucleon structure. of the form factors, the electric form factor of the neutron has been measured over the smallest range in Q2 and with the lowest precision. Jefferson Lab experiment 02-013 used a novel new polarized 3He target to nearly double the range of momentum transfer in which the neutron form factor has been studied and to measure it with much higher precision. Polarized electrons were scattered off this target, and both the scattered electron and neutron were detected. GEn was measured …

The Logarithmic Method And The Solution To The Tp2-Completion Problem, Shahla Nasserasr Jan 2010

The Logarithmic Method And The Solution To The Tp2-Completion Problem, Shahla Nasserasr

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A matrix is called TP2 if all 1-by-1 and 2-by-2 minors are positive. A partial matrix is one with some of its entries specified, while the remaining, unspecified, entries are free to be chosen. A TP2-completion, of a partial matrix T , is a choice of values for the unspecified entries of T so that the resulting matrix is TP2. The TP2-completion problem asks which partial matrices have a TP2-completion. A complete solution is given here. It is shown that the Bruhat partial order on permutations is the inverse of a certain natural partial order induced by TP2 matrices and …

Advancements In Dual-Pump Broadband Cars For Supersonic Combustion Measurements, Sarah Augusta. Tedder Jan 2010

Advancements In Dual-Pump Broadband Cars For Supersonic Combustion Measurements, Sarah Augusta. Tedder

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Space- and time-resolved measurements of temperature and species mole fractions of nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen were obtained with a dual-pump coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) system in hydrogen-fueled supersonic combustion free jet flows. These measurements were taken to provide time-resolved fluid properties of turbulent supersonic combustion for use in the creation and verification of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models. CFD models of turbulent supersonic combustion flow currently facilitate the design of air- breathing supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) engines. Measurements were made in supersonic axi-symmetric free jets of two scales. First, the measurement system was tested in a laboratory environment using …

Characterization And Deposition Of Aerosol Organic Matter In The Eastern United States, Andrew S. Wozniak Jan 2010

Characterization And Deposition Of Aerosol Organic Matter In The Eastern United States, Andrew S. Wozniak

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Aerosol organic carbon (OC) was characterized in two eastern United States watersheds to investigate the potential importance of aerosol OC in watershed OC budgets and cycling. Fluxes of 1.7 and 2.1 mg aerosol OC m-2 d-1 were measured for aerosol samples in Harcum, VA and Millbrook, NY, respectively. Scaled to the area of nearby watersheds (York River watershed, VA and Hudson River watershed, NY) these fluxes are similar in magnitude or greater than the magnitude of riverine OC exported by corresponding rivers indicating that aerosols must be taken into account when thinking about biogeochemical exchanges between the atmospheric, terrestrial, and …

Observations Of Storm Morphodynamics Using Coastal Lidar And Radar Imaging System (Claris): Importance Of Wave Refraction And Dissipation Over Complex Surf-Zone Morphology At A Shoreline Erosional Hotspot, Katherine L. Brodie Jan 2010

Observations Of Storm Morphodynamics Using Coastal Lidar And Radar Imaging System (Claris): Importance Of Wave Refraction And Dissipation Over Complex Surf-Zone Morphology At A Shoreline Erosional Hotspot, Katherine L. Brodie

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Elevated water levels and large waves during storms cause beach erosion, overwash, and coastal flooding, particularly along barrier island coastlines. While predictions of storm tracks have greatly improved over the last decade, predictions of maximum water levels and variations in the extent of damage along a coastline need improvement. In particular, physics based models still cannot explain why some regions along a relatively straight coastline may experience significant erosion and overwash during a storm, while nearby locations remain seemingly unchanged. Correct predictions of both the timing of erosion and variations in the magnitude of erosion along the coast will be …

Copepod Carcasses, Mortality And Population Dynamics In The Tributaries Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, David Thomas. Elliott Jan 2010

Copepod Carcasses, Mortality And Population Dynamics In The Tributaries Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, David Thomas. Elliott

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Several studies have documented the occurrence of substantial numbers of zooplankton carcasses in marine field samples. However, the potential effect of carcasses on conclusions resting on zooplankton abundance estimates, and the reasons for carcass occurrence have been largely disregarded. Many field studies do not account for the presence of carcasses in their sampling methodology. Zooplankton carcasses in situ are significant for several reasons. as concentrated particles of organic matter in the water column, zooplankton carcasses can be important vehicles for organic matter transport and hotspots of microbial abundance and activity. If dead animals are treated alive, carcasses could bias the …

No previous lab studies on bioaccumulation …

Persistent Organic Pollutants(Pops) As Tracers Of Environmental Change And Antarctic Seabird Ecology, Heidi N. C. Geisz Jan 2010

Persistent Organic Pollutants(Pops) As Tracers Of Environmental Change And Antarctic Seabird Ecology, Heidi N. C. Geisz

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Antarctic seabirds including Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), south polar skuas (Catharacta maccormicki), southern giant petrels (Macronectes gigantus) are high trophic level predators that accumulate persistent organic pollutants (POPs) present in the food webs in which they forage. Little is known about the levels of POPs in some Antarctic organisms (e.g. southern giant petrels), as well as the long-term trends of POPs in the Antarctic ecosystem. Samples from all three seabird species were collected post mortem, including eggs, from the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) and in the Ross Sea throughout the austral summer breeding seasons of 2004--2006. The samples were analyzed …

Effects Of Habitat Quality On Secondary Production In Shallow Estuarine Waters And The Consequences For The Benthic-Pelagic Food Web, David James Gillett Jan 2010

Effects Of Habitat Quality On Secondary Production In Shallow Estuarine Waters And The Consequences For The Benthic-Pelagic Food Web, David James Gillett

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Anthropogenic degradation of coastal and estuarine habitats is an ongoing problem facing scientists, natural resource mangers, and the general public. Decreases in habitat quality produce relatively predictable changes in the structure and composition of macrobenthic communities and it has traditionally been assumed that the ecosystem functions of the community change as well. In Chesapeake Bay, the most pervasive cause for the degradation of benthic habitats is the excessive inputs of nutrients that lead to eutrophication and the accumulation of organic matter in the system. Working within this framework, a study was conducted investigating changes in macrobenthic (i.e., secondary) production along …

Habitat Complexity And Habitat Function Of Native (Crassostrea Virginica) And Non-Native (C. Ariakensis) Oysters In The Chesapeake Bay Region, Heather D. Harwell Jan 2010

Habitat Complexity And Habitat Function Of Native (Crassostrea Virginica) And Non-Native (C. Ariakensis) Oysters In The Chesapeake Bay Region, Heather D. Harwell

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Complex oyster reefs created by the Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, though once prominent features of the Chesapeake Bay region, have become relatively scarce in comparison to historic descriptions. This decline, caused by a combination of overfishing, disease, habitat destruction and pollution, this decline continues despite substantial restoration efforts that have spanned decades. In response to this decline, the states of Virginia and Maryland considered the intentional introduction of the non-native Suminoe oyster, C. ariakensis. Previous studies questioned the reef-building capability of this Crassostrea species, which may affect its habitat function. Through a combination of field and mesocosm studies, I examined …

Mass Transfer And Mergers In Double White Dwarf Binaries, Wesley Paul Even Jan 2010

Mass Transfer And Mergers In Double White Dwarf Binaries, Wesley Paul Even

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We have developed a self consistent field (SCF) technique similar to the one described by Hachisu, Eriguchi, & Nomoto (1986b) that can be used to construct detailed force-balanced models of synchronously rotating, double white dwarf (DWD) binaries. This SCF technique can be used to construct model sequences that mimic the last portion of the detached inspiral phase of DWD binary evolutions, and semi-detached model sequences that mimic a phase of conservative mass transfer. In addition, the SCF models can be used to provide quiet initial starts for dynamical studies of the onset of mass transfer in DWD systems. We present …

Classroomwiki: A Collaborative Wiki For Instructional Use With Multiagent Group Formation, Nobel Khandaker, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Abstract—Wikis today are being used as a tool to conduct collaborative writing assignments in classrooms. However, typical Wikis do not adequately address the assessment of individual student contributions toward their groups or provide any automated group formation mechanism. To improve these aspects, we have designed and implemented ClassroomWiki – a Web-based collaborative Wiki writing tool. For the students, ClassroomWiki provides a Web interface for writing and revising their group’s Wiki and a topic-based forum for discussing their ideas during collaboration. When the students collaborate, ClassroomWiki tracks all student activities and builds detailed student models that represent their contributions toward their …

Approximate Instance Retrieval On Ontologies, Tuvshintur Tserendorj, Stephan Grimm, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2010

Approximate Instance Retrieval On Ontologies, Tuvshintur Tserendorj, Stephan Grimm, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

With the development of more expressive description logics (DLs) for the Web Ontology Language OWL the question arises how we can properly deal with the high computational complexity for efficient reasoning. In application cases that require scalable reasoning with expressive ontologies, non-standard reasoning solutions such as approximate reasoning are necessary to tackle the intractability of reasoning in expressive DLs. In this paper, we are concerned with the approximation of the reasoning task of instance retrieval on DL knowledge bases, trading correctness of retrieval results for gain of speed. We introduce our notion of an approximate concept extension and we provide …

Distributed Reasoning With El++ Using Mapreduce, Frederick Maier, Raghava Mutharaju, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2010

Distributed Reasoning With El++ Using Mapreduce, Frederick Maier, Raghava Mutharaju, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

It has recently been shown that the MapReduce framework for distributed computation can be used effectively for large-scale RDF Schema reasoning, computing the deductive closure of over a billion RDF triples within a reasonable time. Later work has carried this approach over to OWL Horst. In this paper, we provide a MapReduce algorithm for classifying knowledge bases in the description logic EL++, which is essentially the OWL 2 profile OWL 2 EL. The traditional EL++ classification algorithm is recast into a form compatible with MapReduce, and it is shown how the revised algorithm can be realized within …
