The Mechanical And The Electrical Properties Of Conducting Polypyrrole Fibers, Javad Foroughi, Shaban R. Ghorbani, Germanas Peleckis, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Gordon G. Wallace, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The mechanical and the electrical properties of polypyrrole (PPy) fibers and electrochemically deposited PPy films were studied. It was found that the PPy fibers showed a significantly higher strength than the PPy films due to better orientation of the molecular structure. The electrochemically prepared PPy films had a higher electrical conductivity than that of the fibers at high temperature. At low temperature, the PPy fibers showed the higher conductivity. The conductivity results were analyzed in the frame of the three-dimensional variable range hopping model. The results showed that at room temperature the average hopping distance for the fibers was about …

Structure, Magnetic, And Thermal Properties Of Nd1-Xlaxcro3 (0 ≤ X ≤ 1.0), Yi Du, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Perovskite-type Nd1−xLaxCrO3(0 ≤ x ≤1.0) polycrystalline samples were synthesized using solid state reaction. Structural studies indicate that the lattice parameters, metal–oxygen bond lengths, and angles of Nd1−xLaxCrO3 strongly depend on the La content. Two magnetic transition temperatures, Cr3+ antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (TN) and the spin reorientation phase transition temperature (TSRPT), have been observed in the M-T curves. The increase in TN and decrease in TSRPT with increasing x value can be explained by the change in the magnetic interactions due to La …

Synthesis And Electrochemical Studies On Li2cusno4 And Li2cusnsio6 As Negative Electrode In Lithium Batteries, Atef Y. Shenouda, Hua-Kun Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Li2CuSnO4 and Li2CuSnSiO6 were prepared from their precursors compounds using Brij surfactant and a hydrothermal autoclave method. X-ray diffraction characterization revealed that the crystal structures of these compounds were tetragonal. Scanning electron microscope investigation showed the particle size morphology of Li2CuSnSiO6 is larger than that of Li2CuSnO4. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) explained that Li2CuSnO4 cell had higher charge transfer resistance (Rct = 2936Ω) than that of Li2CuSnSiO6 (38Ω). Furthermore, the reversible specific discharge capacity of the Li2CuSnSiO6 …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Here we report the optimized magnetotransport properties of polycrystalline La0.70Ca0.3−xSrxMnO3 and their composites with Ag. The optimization was carried out by varying the Sr and Ag contents simultaneously to achieve large temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) as well as low field magnetoresistance (MR) at room temperature. Sharpest paramagnetic (PM)-ferromagnetic (FM) and insulator-metal (IM) transition is observed in the vicinity of the room temperature (TC≈300 K ≈TIM) for the composition La0.70Ca0.20Sr0.10MnO3:Ag0.20. Partial substitution of larger Sr2+ ions at the …

One of the most important properties of very recently reported FeSe based superconductors is the robustness of their superconductivity under applied magnetic field. The synthesis and control of superconductivity in FeSe based compounds is rather a difficult task. Synthesis and physical property characterization for optimized superconductivity of FeSe1/2Te1/2 at 13 K is reported here. The compound crystallized in a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a=3.8015(2) and c =6.0280(4) Å. Magnetization measurements indicated bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of around 180 Oe. By applying Ginzburg–Landau theory, the Hc2(0) value is estimated to …

Lanthanum Doped Multiferroic Dyfeo3: Structural And Magnetic Properties, Yi Du, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Lanthanum doped multiferroic DyFeO3 was synthesized by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction and refinement show that the lattice parameters of Dy1−xLaxFeO3 increase linearly with the La content. Raman spectroscopy reveals that the short-range force constant in Dy1−xLaxFeO3 is decreased by La3+ ion substitution. The spin reorientation phase transition temperature (TSRPT) is observed to decrease along with the doping level. The antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN of Fe3+ ions is depressed with increasing doping level. Both decreasing TSRPT and decreasing TN indicate that Fe–Dy and Fe–Fe …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Synthesis and characterization of bulk NaxCoO2 samples substituted by K and Rb is reported. Phase formation studies revealed a narrow stable region for Na-alkali metal-Co system. Whisker and platelike single crystalline structures have been found to form on the surface of the pellets in case of K doping. All samples were metallic and no characteristic anomaly in R-T curves was observed for Rb doped sample. Magnetoresistance measured has a pronounced positive response only for K-doped and pure NaxCoO2 phases, reaching 11% and 7% at 5 K temperature, respectively.

Very Strong Intrinsic Flux Pinning And Vortex Avalanches In (Ba, K)Fe2as2 Superconducting Single Crystals, Xiaolin Wang, Shaban R. Ghorbani, Sung-Ik Lee, S X. Dou, C T Lin, T H. Johansen, K.H Muller, Zhenxiang Cheng, Germanas Peleckis, M Shabazi, A.J Qviller, V Yurchenko, G.L Sun, D.L Sun

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report that the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 crystal with Tc=32 K shows a pinning potential, U0, as high as 104 K, with U0 showing very little field dependence. The (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals become isotropic at low temperatures and high magnetic fields, resulting in a very rigid vortex lattice, even in fields very close to Hc2. The isotropic rigid vortices observed in the two-dimensional (2D) (Ba,K)Fe2As2 distinguish this compound from 2D high-Tc cuprate superconductors with 2D vortices. The vortex avalanches were also observed at low …

Giant Magnetic Entropy Change In Colossal Magnetoresistance In La0.7ca0.3mno3 Material In Low Field, Jyotish Debnath, Rong Zeng, Jung Ho Kim, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of the manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 have been studied. Change in the giant magnetic entropy was observed without any noticeable magnetic hysteresis but with small thermal hysteresis losses. We observed a first order magnetic phase transition around 251 K. The magnetic entropy change observed in this work is estimated to be 5.27 J/kg K for field changes from 0 to 1.5 T based on magnetization measurements. This value is about twice as large as those for other perovskite manganites and is even larger than for Gd-based magnetic materials at low fields. …

A Novel Multiferroic System: Rare Earth Chromates, Zhenxiang Cheng, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou, Hideo Kimura, Kiyoshi Ozawa

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this work, we report on our studies on the multiferroic properties of two rare earth chromates, GdCrO3 and YCrO3. Polycrystalline bulks and thin films have been fabricated using conventional solid state reaction and pulsed laser deposition. Magnetic measurements have revealed that both compounds show weak ferromagnetism below the antiferromagnetic Neel temperature, TN, of 170 and 140 K for GdCrO3 and YCrO3, respectively. However the well-developed ferroelectric polarization electrical field loop was not successfully measured for both samples due to their low resistance. The high conductivity of the samples at room temperature is related …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We report on the use of inkjet, extrusion, and capillary printing of poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene)/ poly(sodium 4-styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) to create structures that could be used in a flexible, implantable bionic device. Resistance values as low as 250 kΩ are demonstrated, with little deviation under as much as 1.5% strain. The results show PEDOT/PSS can be a suitable material for printed bionic devices.

Nanostructured Electrically Conducting Biofibres Produced Using A Reactive Wet-Spinning Process, Javad Foroughi, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Gordon G. Wallace

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Electrically conducting, robust fibres comprised of both an alginate (Alg) biopolymer and a polypyrrole (PPy) component have been produced using reactive wet-spinning. Using this approach polypyrrole-biopolymer fibres were also produced with single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), added to provide additional strength and conductivity. The fibres produced containing CNTs show a 78% increase in ultimate stress and 25% increase in elongation to break compared to PPy-alginate fibre. These properties are essential for studies involving the use of electrical stimulation to promote nerve regrowth and/or muscle regeneration. The resultant a novel fibres had been evaluated to develop a viable system in incorporating biological …

Dft Study Of Geometry And Energetics Of Transition Metal Systems, Satyender Goel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on computational study of the geometry and energetics small molecules and nanoclusters involving transition metals (TM). These clusters may be used for various industrial applications including catalysis and photonics. Specifically, in this work we have studied hydrides and carbides of 3d-transition metal systems (Sc through Cu), small nickel and gold clusters. Qualitatively correct description of the bond dissociation is ensured by allowing the spatial and spin symmetry to break. We have tested applicability of new exchange-correlation functional and alternative theoretical descriptions (spin-contamination correction in broken symmetry DFT and ensemble Kohn-Sham (EKS)) as well. We studies TM hydrides …

Terahertz Emission From Inp, Stuart Hargreaves, Roger A. Lewis Jan 2010

Terahertz Emission From Inp, Stuart Hargreaves, Roger A. Lewis

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We investigate the generation of THz radiation by the application of ultra-short near-infrared optical pulses to bulk unbiased InP. The THz radiation is detected in the direction of the specular reflection. While the overall emission characteristics are similar to those displayed by InAs under similar excitation conditions, in contrast to InAs, a single-cycle only variation in THz signal, of about ±20%, is observed as the sample is rotated through 360° around the surface normal.

Automatic Generation Of Music For Inducing Emotive Response, Tony R. Martinez, Kristine Monteith, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

We present a system that generates original music designed to match a target emotion. It creates n-gram models, Hidden Markov Models, and other statistical distributions based on musical selections from a corpus representing a given emotion and uses these models to probabilistically generate new musical selections with similar emotional content. This system produces unique and often remarkably musical selections that tend to match a target emotion, performing this task at a level that approaches human competency for the same task.

Using Landscape Genetics To Assess Population Connectivity In A Habitat Generalist, Tyler Duncan Hether Jan 2010

Using Landscape Genetics To Assess Population Connectivity In A Habitat Generalist, Tyler Duncan Hether

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the nature of genetic variation in natural populations is an underlying theme of population genetics. In recent years population genetics has benefited from the incorporation of landscape and environmental data into pre-existing models of isolation by distance (IBD) to elucidate features influencing spatial genetic variation. Many of these landscape genetics studies have focused on populations separated by discrete barriers (e.g., mountain ridges) or species with specific habitat requirements (i.e., habitat specialists). One difficulty in using a landscape genetics approach for taxa with less stringent habitat requirements (i.e., generalists) is the lack of obvious barriers to gene flow and preference …

Physicochemical And Thermochemical Properties Of Sulfonated Poly(Etheretherketone) Electrolyte Membranes, Stephen Rhoden Jan 2010

Physicochemical And Thermochemical Properties Of Sulfonated Poly(Etheretherketone) Electrolyte Membranes, Stephen Rhoden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fuel cells have long been seen as an alternative to combustion powered and diesel powered engines and turbines. Production of energy via a fuel cell conversion method can generate up to 60% efficiency in comparison to 30% using a combustion powered engine, with low co-production of harmful side-products. The polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) adapted for the fuel cell application is one of the main components that determines the overall efficiency. This research project was focused towards novel PEMs, such as sulfonated poly(etheretherketone) or SPEEK, which are cost-efficient and robust with high proton conductivities under hydrated conditions. The degree of sulfonation …
