Search For Rare And Forbidden Decays Of Charm And Charmed-Strange Mesons To Final States H^+- E^-+ E^+, Raymond Mountain, Marina Artuso, S. Blusk, T. Skwarnicki

We have searched for flavor-changing neutral current decays and lepton-number-violating decays of D^+ and D^+_s mesons to final states of the form h^+- e^-+ e^+, where h is either \pi or K. We use the complete samples of CLEO-c open-charm data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 818 pb^-1 at the center-of-mass energy E_CM = 3.774 GeV containing 2.4 x 10^6 D^+D^- pairs and 602 pb^-1 at E_CM = 4.170 GeV containing 0.6 x 10^6 D^*+-_s D^-+_s pairs. No signal is observed in any channel, and we obtain 90% confidence level upper limits on branching fractions B(D^+ --> \pi^+ e^+ e^-) …

We report the first experimental observation of strong suppression of matter-wave superradiance using blue-detuned pump light and demonstrate a pump-laser detuning asymmetry in the collective atomic recoil motion. In contrast to all previous theoretical frameworks, which predict that the process should be symmetric with respect to the sign of the detuning of the pump laser from the one-photon resonance, we find that for condensates the symmetry is broken. With high condensate densities and red-detuned pump light the distinctive multiorder, matter-wave scattering pattern is clearly visible, whereas with blue-detuned pump light superradiance is strongly suppressed. Targeted Maximum Likelihood Learning (TMLL) has been proposed as a general estimation methodology that can, in particular, be applied to draw causal inferences based on marginal structural modeling with observational data using either a point treatment approach (all confounders are assumed not to be affected by the exposure(s) of interest) or a longitudinal data approach (some confounders may be affected by one of the exposures of interest). The role of abnormal DNA methylation in the progression of disease is a growing area of research that relies upon the establishment of sound statistical methods. The common method for declaring there is differential methylation between two groups at a given CpG site, as summarized by the difference between proportions methylated db=b1-b2, has been through use of a Filtered Two Sample t-test, using the recommended filter of 0.17 (Bibikova et al., 2006b). Deformation and uplift of the Burica Peninsula along the Panama-Costa Rica border results from eastward migration of the Panama Triple Junction (PTJ); the boundary between three tectonic plates. As the triple junction migrates to the southeast at ~55 mm/yr along the Middle America Trench (MAT), the Panama Fracture Zone (PFZ), separating the Cocos and Nazca plates, subducts under the Panama microplate. Differences in the thickness of the plates across the PFZ, as well as the rate and angle of subduction between the Cocos and Nazca plates, cause the Panama microplate to step up and over the Cocos plate. Stable Isotopes Of Fossil Teeth Corroborate Key General Circulation Model Predictions For The Last Glacial Maximum In North America, Matthew J. Kohn, Moriah Mckay

Oxygen isotope data provide a key test of general circulation models (GCMs) for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in North America, which have otherwise proved difficult to validate. High δ18O pedogenic carbonates in central Wyoming have been interpreted to indicate increased summer precipitation sourced from the Gulf of Mexico. Here we show that tooth enamel δ18O of large mammals, which is strongly correlated with local water and precipitation δ18O, is lower during the LGM in Wyoming, not higher. Similar data from Texas, California, Florida and Arizona indicate higher δ18O values than in the Holocene, which is also predicted by GCMs. …

A long-standing goal of subduction zone earthquake studies is to determine whether or not there are physical processes that control seismogenesis and the along-strike segmentation of the megathrust. Studies of individual earthquakes and global compilations of earthquakes find favorable comparison between coseismic interplate slip distributions and several different long-lived forearc characteristics, such as bathymetry, coastline morphology, crustal structure, and interplate frictional properties, but no single explanation seems to govern the location and slip distribution of all earthquakes. Microarray technology is essentially a measurement tool for measuring expressions of genes, and this measurement is subject to measurement error. Gene expressions could be employed as predictors for patient survival, and the measurement error involved in the gene expression is often ignored in the analysis of microarray data in the literature. Efforts are needed to establish statistical method for analyzing microarray data without ignoring the error in gene expression. In an extreme binary black hole system, an orbit will increase its angle of inclination (ι) as it evolves in Kerr spacetime. We focus our attention on the behaviour of the Carter constant (Q) for near-polar orbits, and develop an analysis that is independent of and complements radiation-reactionmodels. For a Schwarzschild black hole, the polar orbits represent the abutment between the prograde and retrograde orbits at whichQis at its maximum value for given values of the latus rectum (˜l ) and the eccentricity (e). We report an experimental demonstration of a strategy for inducing two-dimensional (2D)crystallization of charged nanoparticles on oppositely charged fluid interfaces. This strategy aims to maximize the interfacial adsorption of nanoparticles, and hence their lateral packing density, by utilizing a combination of weakly charged particles and a high surface charge density on the planar interface. In order to test this approach, we investigated the assembly of cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) on positively charged lipid monolayers at the aqueous solution surface, by means of in situX-ray scattering measurements at the liquid–vapor interface. High frequency radar observations in the Southeastern United States have revealed sequences of small short‐lived cyclonic eddies along the shoreward edge of the Gulf Stream, that spin up as the local tide turns alongshelf antiparallel to the Stream. Eddies propagate equatorward along the shelf edge, sometimes progressing shoreward before dissipating one to three hours later. They are distinctly different from Gulf Stream meander eddies, which propagate poleward. The dasycladalean alga Chinianella? scheympflugi was described by Hofmann (1994) from the Tithonian of the Ernstbrunn Limestone of Lower Austria. This alga, so far unreported besides its type-locality, is reported from the Late Jurassic of Poland, the Northern Calcareous Alps of Austria, Crimea (Ukraine), and Greece (Parnassos Zone). Facies are well-agitated outer platform habitats (peri-reefal and back-reefal facies). The cylindrical thallus consists of three parts: a sterile Salpingoporella-like basal part (stalk), a fertile Chinianella-type main portion and a short sterile top part. A crucial concern of early modern geometry was fixing appropriate norms for deciding whether some objects, procedures, or arguments should or should not be allowed into it. According to Bos, this is the exactness concern. I argue that Descartes’s way of responding to this concern was to suggest an appropriate conservative extension of Euclid’s plane geometry (EPG). In Section 2, I outline the exactness concern as, I think, it appeared to Descartes. Part one of this thesis focuses on the synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2-a]indoles from nitrones and 1,1-cyclopropanediesters, by way of tetrahydro-1,2-oxazines. A five step synthetic sequence through tetrahydro-1,2-oxazine synthesis, intramolecular Heck reaction, Krapcho dealkoxycarbonylation, reductive N-O bond cleavage, and acid catalyzed transannular alcohol displacement, is developed to access the desired pyrrolo[1,2-a]indoles. Part two of this thesis details the functionalization of indoles by installation of a malonate moiety, by means of copper catalyzed carbenoid reactivity. To date the reputation of the information and communication technology (ICT) industry in Australia, and elsewhere, has been quite negative with respect to its effect on the environment. The recent "Green IT" initiatives of the Australian Computer Society to reduce carbon emission are manifestations of this. The Whale Pump: Marine Mammals Enhance Primary Productivity In A Coastal Basin, Joe Roman, James J. Mccarthy

It is well known that microbes, zooplankton, and fish are important sources of recycled nitrogen in coastal waters, yet marine mammals have largely been ignored or dismissed in this cycle. Using field measurements and population data, we find that marine mammals can enhance primary productivity in their feeding areas by concentrating nitrogen near the surface through the release of flocculent fecal plumes. Whales and seals may be responsible for replenishing 2.3x104 metric tons of N per year in the Gulf of Maine's euphotic zone, more than the input of all rivers combined. The complex interaction between predators and their prey is rarely preserved in the fossil record. However, predation of marine mollusks by drilling gastropods leaves a diagnostic hole in the shell of the prey, possibly allowing for quantitative analysis of this ecological interaction. Drilling frequency, as measured in marine mollusks both in the Modern and fossil record, has been heralded as a potential opportunity to quantify these ecological interactions and use these values in the testing of hypotheses.

Work Towards The Isolation And Characterization Of The Muscle Isoform Of Glucose 1,6-Bisphosphatase, Caleb J. Hiller

Glucose 1,6-bisphosphate is an important small molecule involved in the regulation of glycolysis. Four enzymes synthesize this compound. One enzyme is known to degrade it, glucose 1,6-bisphosphatase. Other groups have produced work that indicates that there are two isoforms of this enzyme, one predominant in the brain and one in the muscle. This thesis contains the work performed in attempts to isolate and characterize the muscle isoform of glucose 1,6-bisphosphatase. While this enzyme was not isolated, much was learned about it and the results from this work may help in the future identification of this enzyme.

The geographic patterns of phenotypic variation in leaf morphology traits were studied in the mangrove Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. in tropical Queensland, Australia, to determine whether discrete subpopulations could be recognised in the field. Significant differences in the various leaf characters occurred among the sites, which were not explained by longitude or latitude, nor by inter-site distances. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the estimated site means showed no coherent geographical groupings of the sites, suggesting that site populations do not follow a differentiation by distance model. Principal component analysis showed that site groupings with consistent leaf morphological characteristics could be identified, …

Carbon Isotope Compositions Of Terrestrial C3 Plants As Indicators Of (Paleo)Ecology And (Paleo)Climate, Matthew J. Kohn

A broad compilation of modern carbon isotope compositions in all C3 plant types shows a monotonic increase in δ13C with decreasing mean annual precipitation (MAP) that differs from previous models. Corrections for temperature, altitude, or latitude are smaller than previously estimated. As corrected for altitude, latitude, and the δ13C of atmospheric CO2, these data permit refined interpretation of MAP, paleodiet, and paleoecology of ecosystems dominated by C3 plants, either prior to 7–8 million years ago (Ma), or more recently at mid- to high latitudes.
