Scientific discoveries about Pluto and the rest of the universe led scientists to question Pluto’s status and ultimately to strip Pluto of its standing among planets. Neil deGrasse Tyson’s The Pluto Files masterfully weaves together the empirical, conceptual, and cultural questions surrounding Pluto’s demotion. The problem, for scientists and spectators alike, was this: there was no scientific definition of planet. This review systematizes the Pluto puzzle presented in the book and reveals its relevance for law. The questions presented by The Pluto Files – how man relates to the world, how man understands its conceptual categories, and how man …

Charm production in deep inelastic scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb-1. The hadronic decay channels D+ → KS0π+, Λc+ → pKS0 and Λc+ → Λπ+, and their charge conjugates, were reconstructed. The presence of a neutral strange hadron in the final state reduces the combinatorial background and extends the measured sensitivity into the low transverse momentum region. The kinematic range is 0 < pT (D+,Λc+ ) < 10GeV, |η(D+,Λc+ )| < 1.6, 1.5 < Q2 < 1000GeV2 and 0.02 < y < 0.7. Inclusive and differential cross sections for the production of D+ mesons are compared to next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. The fraction of c quarks hadronising into Λc+ baryons is extracted.

Cuspidal Modules Of The Lie Superalgebras Osp(1|2n), Alekzander J. Malcom Jan 2010

Cuspidal Modules Of The Lie Superalgebras Osp(1|2n), Alekzander J. Malcom

Mathematics Theses

The classification of all bounded weight modules for the classical Lie superalgebras is an open question. Only recently, in fact, has the question been closed for the Lie algebras (see Mathieu). We give a differential algebra isomorphic to osp(1|2n), which is one of the remaining Lie superalgebras to have its modules classified. We also conjecture, following the results for the Lie algebra sp(2n), a method to finalize the classification for osp(1|2n).

Etherannotate: A Transparent Malware Analysis Tool For Integrating Dynamic And Static Examination, Joshua Michael Eads

Masters Theses

"Software security researchers commonly reverse engineer and analyze current malicious software (malware) to determine what the latest techniques malicious attackers are utilizing and how to protect computer systems from attack. The most common analysis methods involve examining how the program behaves during execution and interpreting its machine-level instructions. However, modern malicious applications use advanced anti-debugger, anti-virtualization, and code packing techniques to obfuscate the malware's true activities and divert security analysts. Malware analysts currently do not have a simple method for tracing malicious code activity at the instruction-level in a highly undetectable environment. There also lacks a simple method for combining …

The Use Of Ionic Liquid Based Salts In Gas Chromatography And Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Zachary Steven Breitbach

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on two uses for Room Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs). First, RTILs will be used to produce novel Gas Chromatographic (GC) stationary phases. The use of new phosphonium based RTIL GC columns for one-dimensional and two-dimensional GC will be discussed. The high thermal stability and unique orthogonality of these phases will be demonstrated. Additionally, the development of the first tricationic RTIL based GC stationary phases will be presented. The exceptional peak shape for polar compounds and thermal stability of these stationary phases are examined. Furthermore, the solvation properties of these novel solvents will be described via a linear …

The purposes of this investigation were to study the vertical and lateral microfacies changes that occur throughout the Jacksboro Limestone in its outcrop belt and to discuss its relationship as the basal regressive cycle in the Virgilian part of the Pennsylvanian, in particular: (1) describe and classify the primary limestone lithofacies on the basis of carbonate rock textures, (2) interpret, if possible, the depositional environment and physical energy of …

Enantiomeric Chromatographic Separations And Ionic Liquids In Gas Chromatography, Ke Huang Jan 2010

Enantiomeric Chromatographic Separations And Ionic Liquids In Gas Chromatography, Ke Huang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations

Due to the different therapeutic values of optical isomers, the production of enantiomerically pure drugs is of growing demand in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and agrochemical industries. Today, gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are the most prevalent analytical techniques for the enantiomeric separation of chiral molecules. Although the two techniques can have very different separation mechanisms, they are highly complementary to each other. Together, they can accomplish enantiomeric separations for large numbers of compounds of different functionalities. A great variety of chiral stationary phases (CSPs) have been developed over the years. However, since they are the heart of …

Verrucomicrobia: A Model Phylum To Study The Effects Of Deforestation On Microbial Diversity In Amazon Forest, Kshitij Ranjan Jan 2010

Verrucomicrobia: A Model Phylum To Study The Effects Of Deforestation On Microbial Diversity In Amazon Forest, Kshitij Ranjan

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses

The Amazon rainforest is known for having a very high diversity of plants and animals. However, it is one of the least understood ecosystems regarding microbial diversity. Microorganisms are important for the ecological balance of any ecosystem and play important role in various biogeochemical cycles. As the Amazon rainforest undergoes to rapid deforestation, loss of its biodiversity is expected. This research aims to determine the effects of deforestation on the soil microbial diversity of the Amazon forest. Toward this, we selected the phylum Verrucomicrobia as a model for observing changes in the microbial structure of rainforest soils. Samples were collected …

Truncated Toeplitz Operators: Spatial Isomorphism, Unitary Equivalence, And Similarity, William T. Ross, Joseph A. Cima, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Warren R. Wogen

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

A truncated Toeplitz operator Aᵩ : KƟ → KƟ is the compression of a Toeplitz operator Tᵩ : H2 → H2 to a model space KƟ := H2 ƟH2. For Ɵ inner, let TƟ denote the set of all bounded truncated Toeplitz operators on KƟ. Our main result is a necessary and sufficient condition on inner functions Ɵ1 and Ɵ2 which guarantees that TƟ1 and TƟ2 are spatially isomorphic. (i.e., UTƟ1 = TƟ2 U for some unitary U : KƟ1 …

First Measurements Of The Low Energy Tail (Let) Down To 0 Ev Using Auger Photoelectron Coincidence Spectroscopy (Apecs) In Ag (100) And Cu (100), Karthik Shastry Jan 2010

First Measurements Of The Low Energy Tail (Let) Down To 0 Ev Using Auger Photoelectron Coincidence Spectroscopy (Apecs) In Ag (100) And Cu (100), Karthik Shastry

Physics Theses

We present the Auger Photoelectron Coincidence Spectroscopy (APECS) measurements of Ag (100) and Cu (100) over a full range of emitted energies from 0 eV to 81eV. The coincidence measurements were successful in separating the low energy Auger lines from a large background, arising from loss processes unrelated to the Auger transition. The measurements have revealed a well formed Auger peak at 60 eV for Cu (100) and an Auger peak at 40 eV for Ag (100) accompanied by a low energy tail (LET) associated with M2,3VV transition. The Low Energy Tail (LET) extends to 0 eV and has a …

Leading Learning Within A Plc: Implementing New Mathematics Content, Ann Heirdsfield, Janeen Lamb, Gayle Spry

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper does two things. Firstly, it examines the literature that coalesces around theoretical models of teacher professional development (PD) within a professional learning community (PLC). Secondly, these models are used to analyse support provided to two year 3 teachers, while implementing the draft Queensland mathematics syllabus. The findings from this study suggest that the development of this small PLC extended the teachers’ Zone of Enactment which in turn led to teacher action and reflection. This was demonstrated by the teachers leading their own learning as well as that of their students.

Geothermal Energy Potential Of South Bossier Parish, Louisiana, John Adam D'Aquin Jan 2010

Geothermal Energy Potential Of South Bossier Parish, Louisiana, John Adam D'Aquin

LSU Master's Theses

Northwestern Louisiana sits atop a geothermal anomaly that stretches across Eastern Texas and into Southern Arkansas. Geothermal gradients are observed in this area that are greater than the Gulf Coast average of 22-26oC/km. South Bossier Parish, in particular, could be an ideal location for economic production of electricity by conventional geothermal or enhanced geothermal projects due to ideal geothermal production temperatures of 120-180oC at a relatively shallow depth of approximately 3-5 km. A localized geothermal of 35oC/km gradient was determined using bottom-hole temperatures (BHTs) from 147 wells. At approximately 3.2 km depth, temperatures of approximately 130oC within the geopressured sands …

We present the first results from the largest deep extragalactic mm-wavelength survey undertaken to date. These results are derived from maps covering over 0.7 deg , made at λ = 1.1 mm, using the AzTEC continuum camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The maps were made in the two fields originally targeted at λ = 850 μm with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) in the SCUBA Half-Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) project, namely the Lockman Hole East (mapped to a depth of 0.9-1.3 mJy rms) and the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (mapped to a depth of 1.0-1.7 mJy rms). …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Electronic And Structural Characteristics Of Polyphenolic Inhibitors Of Pai-1, Patrick Spoutz Jan 2010

A Comparative Analysis Of The Electronic And Structural Characteristics Of Polyphenolic Inhibitors Of Pai-1, Patrick Spoutz

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Polyphenolic compounds containing two gallate groups have been shown to be effective inhibitors of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1). In this work we use Density Functional calculations to examine energetically-accessible configurations of two digallate compounds exhibiting disparate inhibitory activity toward PAI-1. In addition, we examine the partial charges of potentially acidic protons and the relative stability of the respective conjugate bases of a select group of PAI-1 inhibitors. This analysis was carried out to determine whether such characteristics can be used to distinguish between effective and less effective inhibitors. An examination of the stable configurations of CDE-008 and CDE-056 indicates that …

Marine Benthic Habitat Mapping Of Muir Inlet, Glacier Bay National Park And Preserve, Alaska With An Evaluation Of The Coastal And Marine Ecological Classification Standard Iii, Luke D. Mitchell, Guy R. Cochrane, Lisa Etherington, Ross D. Powell, Larry A. Mayer

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Seafloor geology and potential benthic habitats were mapped in Muir Inlet, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Alaska, using multibeam sonar, ground-truth information, and geological interpretations. Muir Inlet is a recently deglaciated fjord that is under the influence of glacial and paraglacial marine processes. High glacially derived sediment and meltwater fluxes, slope instabilities, and variable bathymetry result in a highly dynamic estuarine environment and benthic ecosystem. We characterize the fjord seafloor and potential benthic habitats using the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) recently developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NatureServe. Substrates within Muir Inlet …

Families Of Symmetries As Efficient Models Of Resource Binding, Vincenzo Ciancia, Alexander Kurz, Ugo Montanari Jan 2010

Families Of Symmetries As Efficient Models Of Resource Binding, Vincenzo Ciancia, Alexander Kurz, Ugo Montanari

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Calculi that feature resource-allocating constructs (e.g. the pi-calculus or the fusion calculus) require special kinds of models. The best-known ones are presheaves and nominal sets. But named sets have the advantage of being finite in a wide range of cases where the other two are infinite. The three models are equivalent. Finiteness of named sets is strictly related to the notion of finite support in nominal sets and the corresponding presheaves. We show that named sets are generalisd by the categorical model of families, that is, free coproduct completions, indexed by symmetries, and explain how locality of interfaces gives good …
