Consider the space of two-dimensional vector functions whose components and curl are square integrable with respect to the degenerate weight given by the radial variable. This space arises naturally when modeling electromagnetic problems under axial symmetry and performing a dimension reduction via cylindrical coordinates. We prove that if the original three-dimensional domain is convex then the multigrid Vcycle applied to the inner product in this space converges, provided certain modern smoothers are used. We introduce a new technique for the error analysis of hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods. The technique relies on the use of a new projection whose design is inspired by the form of the numerical traces of the methods. This renders the analysis of the projections of the discretization errors simple and concise. By showing that these projections of the errors are bounded in terms of the distance between the solution and its projection, our studies of influence of the stabilization parameter are reduced to local analyses of approximation by the projection. Considering a simple model transport problem, we present a new finite element method. While the new method fits in the class of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods, it differs from standard DG and streamline diffusion methods, in that it uses a space of discontinuous trial functions tailored for stability. The new method, unlike the older approaches, yields optimal estimates for the primal variable in both the element size h and polynomial degree p, and outperforms the standard upwind DG method.

We study conditions for the integrability of the distribution defined on a regular Poisson manifold as the orthogonal complement (with respect to some (pseudo)-Riemannian metric) to the tangent spaces of the leaves of a symplectic foliation. Human off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) in the dark typically produces perceived motion about a cone, the amplitude of which changes as a function of frequency. This perception is commonly attributed to the fact that both the OVAR and the conical motion have a gravity vector that rotates about the subject. Little-known, however, is that this rotating-gravity explanation for perceived conical motion is inconsistent with basic observations about self-motion perception: (a) that the perceived vertical moves toward alignment with the gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA) and (b) that perceived translation arises from perceived linear acceleration, as derived from the portion of the GIA …

We develop several methods, based on the geometric relationship between the eigenspaces of a matrix and its adjoint, for determining whether a square matrix having distinct eigenvalues is unitarily equivalent to a complex symmetric matrix. Equivalently, we characterize those matrices having distinct eigenvalues which lie in the unitary orbit of the complex symmetric matrices.

We say that an operator $T \in B(H)$ is complex symmetric if there exists a conjugate-linear, isometric involution $C:H\to H$ so that $T = CT^*C$. We prove that binormal operators, operators that are algebraic of degree two (including all idempotents), and large classes of rank-one perturbations of normal operators are complex symmetric. From an abstract viewpoint, these results explain why the compressed shift and Volterra integration operator are complex symmetric. Finally, we attempt to describe all complex symmetric partial isometries, obtaining the sharpest possible statement given only the data $(\dim \ker T, \dim \ker T^*)$.

In this study, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system is designed for output voltage and frequency control of a variable-speed wind power generation system. Variable-speed wind power generation systems (VSWPGS) provide the opportunity to capture more power than fixed speed turbines. The three California cities of San Jose, Fresno and West Los Angeles (wLA) were visited during March 2008 to collect on-road emission measurements of reactive nitrogen compounds from light-duty vehicles. At the San Jose and wLA sites comparison with historical measurements showed that emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitric oxide (NO) continue to decrease in the on-road fleet yet the ratio of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) to NO in new diesel vehicles appears to be under going large increases. A small fleet of 2007 diesel ambulances measured in Fresno was found to have more than 60% …

In this work finite subquandles of sphere are classified by using classification of subgroups of orthogonal group O(3). For any subquandle Q of sphere there is a subgroup G_Q of O(3) associated with Q. It is shown that if Q is a finite (infinite) subquandle, then G_Q is a finite (infinite) subgroup. Finite subquandles of sphere are obtained from actions of finite subgroups of SO(3) on sphere. It is proved that the finite subquandles Q_1 and Q_2 of sphere whose all elements are not on the same great circle are isomorphic if and only if the subgroups G_{Q_1} and G_{Q_2} …

In this paper we investigate the light properties of a chiral liquid crystal or a crystal for which the director angle relative to some fixed axis changes as a function of the crystal depth. Sometimes a dopant can introduce a chirality or "twist" in a nematic liquid crystal. For such cases of non-linear depth dependence (where chirality is determined by a diffusion equation) we may use this research to work backwards from a crystal's light properties to intensity and duration of dopant exposure.

Portland State University has made integration of sustainability across its academic programs an institutional priority. This article describes the strategies that have been used to engage faculty in developing sustainability curricula, including adopting sustainability as one of eight campus-wide learning outcomes, incorporating sustainability into the general education program, providing faculty development, and developing a Graduate Certificate in Sustainability. The article shares lessons learned and next steps planned to advance Portland State's sustainability curricula.

Antibiotic contamination of drinking water and sewage is a matter of environmental and public health concern. Traditionally, ELISA or HPLC methods have been used to detect and measure antibiotic contamination. By applying an optical biosensing method, biolayer inteferometry (BLI), we have developed a kinetic competition binding assay capable of quantitating less than lppm (~33 μM) amoxicillin. Similar to surface plasmon resonance, BLI senses changes that occur upon binding of one molecule to another near a surface to measure association and dissociation. Immobilized amoxicillin was used to screen for binding against an analyte solution of anti-amoxicillin equilibrated with amoxicillin-containing water samples, …

We discuss theoretical and physical models that are useful for analyzing the intonation of musical instruments such as guitars and mandolins and can be used to improve the tuning on these instruments. The placement of frets on the fingerboard is designed according to mathematical rules and the assumption of an ideal string. The analysis becomes more complicated when we include the effects of deformation of the string and inharmonicity due to other string characteristics. As a consequence, perfect intonation of all the notes on the instrument cannot be achieved, but complex compensation procedures can be introduced to minimize the problem. …

Building on the scaffolding constructed in the first two articles in this series, we now proceed to the geometric phase of our sheaf (-complex) theoretic quasidualization of Kubota's formalism for n-Hilbert reciprocity. Employing recent work by Bridgeland on stability conditions, we extend our yoga of t-structures situated above diagrams of specifically designed derived categories to arrangements of metric spaces or complex manifolds. This prepares the way for proving n-Hilbert reciprocity by means of singularity analysis.

In this article we study a partial ordering on knots in S3 where K1≥K2 if there is an epimorphism from the knot group of K1 onto the knot group of K2 which preserves peripheral structure. If K1 is a 2–bridge knot and K1≥K2, then it is known that K2 must also be 2–bridge. Problem statement: Many different nonparametric statistical procedures can be used to analyze ranked data. Inconsistencies among the outcomes of such procedures can occur when analyzing the same ranked data set. Understanding why these peculiarities can occur is imperative to providing an accurate analysis of the ranking data. In this context, this study addressed why inconsistent outcomes can occur and which types of data structures cause the different procedures to yield different outcomes. Rationale: Intracellular calcium (Ca) alternans has been widely studied in cardiac myocytes and tissue, yet the underlying mechanism remains controversial.

Objective: In this study, we used computational modeling and simulation to study how randomly occurring Ca sparks interact collectively to result in whole-cell Ca alternans.

Methods and Results: We developed a spatially-distributed intracellular Ca cycling model in which Ca release units (CRUs) are locally coupled by Ca diffusion throughout the myoplasm and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) network. After each round of protein biosynthesis, the posttermination complex (PoTC) consisting of a ribosome, mRNA, and tRNA must be disassembled into its components for a newround of translation. Here, we show that a Saccharomyces cerevisiae model PoTC was disassembled by ATP and eukaryotic elongation factor 3 (eEF3). GTP or ITP functioned with less efficiency and adenosine 5γ′-(β,γ-imido)triphosphate did not function at all. The kcat of eEF3 was 1.12 min-1, which is comparable to that of the in vitro initiation step. The disassembly reaction was inhibited by aminoglycosides and cycloheximide. Translational control is frequently exerted at the stage of mRNA recruitment to the initiating ribosome. We have reconstituted mRNA recruitment to the 43S preinitiation complex (PIC) using purified S. cerevisiae components. We show that eIF3 and the eIF4 factors not only stabilize binding of mRNA to the PIC, they also dramatically increase the rate of recruitment. Although capped mRNAs require eIF3 and the eIF4 factors for efficient recruitment to the PIC, uncapped mRNAs can be recruited in the presence of eIF3 alone. To better understand the processing of biogenic VOCs (BVOCs) in the pine forests of the US Sierra Nevada, we measured HCHO at Blodgett Research Station using Quantum Cascade Laser Spectroscopy (QCLS) during the Biosphere Effects on Aerosols and Photochemistry Experiment (BEARPEX) of late summer 2007. Four days of the experiment exhibited particularly copious HCHO, with midday peaks between 15–20 ppbv, while the other days developed delayed maxima between 8–14 ppbv in the early evening. As a step toward an increased understanding of climate change over West Africa, in this paper we analyze the relationship between rainfall changes and monsoon dynamics in high-resolution regional climate model experiments performed using the Regional Climate Model (RegCM3). Multidecadal simulations are carried out for present-day and future climate conditions under increased greenhouse gas forcing driven by the global climate model European Center/Hamburg 5 (ECHAM5). Compared to the present day, the future scenario simulation produces drier conditions over the Sahel and wetter conditions over orographic areas.
