Immobilization Of Motile Bacterial Cells Via Dip-Pen Nanolithography, Dorjderem Nyamjav, Sergey Rozhok, Richard C. Holz Jan 2010

Immobilization Of Motile Bacterial Cells Via Dip-Pen Nanolithography, Dorjderem Nyamjav, Sergey Rozhok, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A strategy to bind bacterial cells to surfaces in a directed fashion via dip-pen nanolithography (DPN) is presented. Cellular attachment to pre-designed DPN generated microarrays was found to be dependent on the shape and size of the surface feature. While this observation is likely due in part to a dense, well formed mercaptohexadecanoic acid (MHA) monolayer generated via DPN, it may also simply be due to the physical shape of the surface structure. Motile Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial cells were observed to bind to DPN generated mercaptohexadecanoic acid/poly-L-lysine (MHA/PLL) line patterns, 'blocks' made up of eight lines with 100 nm spacings, …

Infrared Spectroelectrochemical Reduction Of Iron Porphyrin Complexes, Zhongcheng Wei, Michael D. Ryan Jan 2010

Infrared Spectroelectrochemical Reduction Of Iron Porphyrin Complexes, Zhongcheng Wei, Michael D. Ryan

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The spectroelectrochemistry of iron porphinones and their nitrosyl complexes were examined by infrared spectroscopy, as well as ferrous octaethylporphyrin nitrosyl. With the use of d8-THF, the solvent was transparent down to 1200 cm−1. For the porphinones, the reduction of the macrocycle ring could be observed by the changes in the νCO band and, for the nitrosyl complex, the changes in the nitrosyl ligand were directly observable from the νNO band. Formation of the ferrous complexes led to a small downshift in the νCO band. Further reduction to the formal Fe(“I”) complex led to …

Thermal Degradation Studies On Pmma–Het Acid Based Oligoesters Blends, Thangamani Rajkumar, Chinnaswamy Thangavel Vijayakumar, Palanichamy Sivasamy, Bojja Sreedhar, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2010

Thermal Degradation Studies On Pmma–Het Acid Based Oligoesters Blends, Thangamani Rajkumar, Chinnaswamy Thangavel Vijayakumar, Palanichamy Sivasamy, Bojja Sreedhar, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Imparting thermal stability to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) without affecting its optical clarity is attempted by incorporating HET acid based oligoesters. Pure PMMA and PMMA containing five and 20 wt% of four different oligoesters are separately prepared using bulk polymerization. The thermal properties of the materials studied using DSC, TG, TG–FTIR and Pyr–GC–MS are presented. The main volatile degradation products identified are CO, HCl, CO2, H2O, hexachlorocyclopentadiene, hexachloroendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid/anhydride and methyl methacrylate. A detailed mechanism for the influence of the degradation products of HET acid based oligoesters on the thermal degradation of PMMA is also presented.

Korovkin Type Approximation Theorem For Functions Of Two Variables In Statistical Sense, Fadi̇me Di̇ri̇k, Kami̇l Demi̇rci̇ Jan 2010

Korovkin Type Approximation Theorem For Functions Of Two Variables In Statistical Sense, Fadi̇me Di̇ri̇k, Kami̇l Demi̇rci̇

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, using the concept of A-statistical convergence for double sequences, we investigate a Korovkin-type approximation theorem for sequences of positive linear operator on the space of all continuous real valued functions defined on any compact subset of the real two-dimensional space. Then we display an application which shows that our new result is stronger than its classical version. We also obtain a Voronovskaya-type theorem \ and some differential properties for sequences of positive linear operators constructed by means of the Bernstein polynomials of two variables.

Extremal Lagrangian Submanifolds In A Complex Space Form N^N(4c), Shichang Shu, Annie Yi Han

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let N^n(4c) be the complex space form of constant holomorphic sectional curvature 4c, \varphi: M \to N^n(4c) be an immersion of an n-dimensional Lagrangian manifold M in N^n(4c). Denote by S and H the square of the length of the second fundamental form and the mean curvature of M. Let \rho be the non-negative function on M defined by \rho^2=S-nH^2, Q be the function which assigns to each point of M the infimum of the Ricci curvature at the point. In this paper, we consider the variational problem for non-negative functional U(\varphi)=\int_M\rho^2dv=\int_M(S-nH^2)dv. We call the critical points of U(\varphi) the …

A Note On The Lyapunov Exponent In Continued Fraction Expansions, Jianzhong Cheng, Lu-Ming Shen Jan 2010

A Note On The Lyapunov Exponent In Continued Fraction Expansions, Jianzhong Cheng, Lu-Ming Shen

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let T:[0,1) \to [0,1) be the Gauss transformation. For any irrational x \in [0,1), the Lyapunov exponent \alpha(x) of x is defined as \alpha(x)=\lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{1}{n} \log (T^n)'(x) . By Birkoff Average Theorem, one knows that \alpha(x) exists almost surely. However, in this paper, we will see that the non-typical set \{x\in [0,1):\lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{1}{n} \log (T^n)'(x) does not exist\} carries full Hausdorff dimension.

On The Codifferential Of The Kähler Form And Cosymplectic Metrics On Maximal Flag Manifolds, Marlio Paredes, Sofia Pinzon

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Using moving frames we obtain a formula to calculate the codifferential of the Kähler form on a maximal flag manifold. We use this formula to obtain some differential type conditions so that a metric on the classical maximal flag manifold be cosymplectic.

Generalized Fibonacci Sequences Related To The Extended Hecke Groups And An Application To The Extended Modular Group, Özden Koruoğlu, Recep Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The extended Hecke groups \overline{H}(\lambda _{q}) are generated by T(z)=-1/z, S(z)=-1/(z+\lambda _{q}) and R(z)=1/ \overline{z} with \lambda _{q}=2\cos (\pi /q) for q\geq 3 integer. In this paper, we obtain a sequence which is a generalized version of the Fibonacci sequence given in [6] for the extended modular group \overline{\Gamma }, in the extended Hecke groups \overline{H}(\lambda_{q}). Then we apply our results to \overline{\Gamma } to find all elements of the extended modular group \overline{\Gamma }.

On The Qualitative Analysis Of The Uniqueness Of The Movement Of Endothelial Cells, Erdem Altuntaç, Serdal Pamuk

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This paper extends the work of Pamuk (2003) by showing mathematically that the movement of endothelial cells, to the regions where active enzyme is large or where fibronectin is small, is unique. To do this, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of the steady-state solution of an initial-boundary value problem which mathematically models endothelial cell movement in tumor angiogenesis. A specific example showing the instability of this steady-state solution is provided.

Swan Conductors And Torsion In The Logarithmic De Rham Complex, Si̇nan Ünver

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We prove, for an arithmetic scheme X/S over a discrete valuation ring whose special fiber is a strict normal crossings divisor in X, that the Swan conductor of X/S is equal to the Euler characteristic of the torsion in the logarithmic de Rham complex of X/S. This is a precise logarithmic analog of a theorem by Bloch [1].

Progenitor scenarios for short gamma-ray bursts (short GRBs) include coalescenses of two neutron stars or a neutron star and black hole, which would necessarily be accompanied by the emission of strong gravitational waves. We present a search for these known gravitational-wave signatures in temporal and directional coincidence with 22 GRBs that had sufficient gravitational-wave data available in multiple instruments during LIGO's fifth science run, S5, and Virgo's first science run, VSR1. We find no statistically significant gravitational-wave candidates within a [ - 5, + 1)s window around the trigger time of any GRB. Using the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U-test, we find no …

The proton-dissociative diffractive photoproduction of J/ψ mesons has been studied in ep collisions with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 112 pb-1. The cross section is presented as a function of the photon-proton centre-ofmass energy and of the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The results are compared to perturbative QCD calculations.

Extreme And Non-Extreme Points Of Compact And Convex Integral Family Of Analytic Functions, Keiko Dow Jan 2010

Extreme And Non-Extreme Points Of Compact And Convex Integral Family Of Analytic Functions, Keiko Dow

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A function f in Fis an extreme point of F if f can not be written as a proper convex combination of two distinct elements of F. We will investigate extreme points and non-extreme points of compact convex family of analytic function on the open unit disc which are generated by integrating a function against a probability measure on torus. A function f in F is a generalized exposed point if f uniquely maximizes real part of L over F for some generalized linear functional L. We use the fact that if f is a generalized exposed point of F, …

Phosphorus For High Rainfall Pastures, Mike Bolland, Bill Russell, David Weaver Jan 2010

Phosphorus For High Rainfall Pastures, Mike Bolland, Bill Russell, David Weaver

Bulletins 4000 -

Soil testing for phosphorus provides a reliable indication of when the level of phosphorus in a soil is likely to be adequate for pasture production in the next growing season. It is a waste of money to apply phosphorus fertiliser when soil testing indicates none is required, or to acidified soils, or to undergrazed pastures, or to pastures dominated by poorly productive species.

Legumes have higher phosphorus requirement than grasses.

Critical soil test phosphorus values do not change when nitrogen fertiliser is applied.

Furthermore, we publish 840 additional new photometry data points on a total of 42 GRB afterglows, including large data sets for GRBs 050319, 050408, 050802, 050820A, 050922C, 060418, 080413A, and 080810. We analyzed the light curves of all GRBs in the sample and derived spectral energy distributions for the sample with the best data quality, allowing …

Bicircular Matroids With Circuits Of At Most Two Sizes, Torina Deachune Lewis Jan 2010

Bicircular Matroids With Circuits Of At Most Two Sizes, Torina Deachune Lewis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Young in his paper titled, Matroid Designs in 1973, reports that Murty in his paper titled, Equicardinal Matroids and Finite Geometries in 1968, was the first to study matroids with all hyperplanes having the same size. Murty called such a matroid an ``Equicardinal Matroid''. Young renamed such a matroid a ``Matroid Design''. Further work on determining properties of these matroids was done by Edmonds, Murty, and Young in their papers published in 1972, 1973, and 1970 respectively. These authors were able to connect the problem of determining the matroid designs with specified parameters with results on balanced incomplete block designs. …

Impervious Surfaces Mapping Using High Resolution Satellite Imagery, Tahmina Shirmeen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, impervious surfaces have emerged not only as an indicator of the degree of urbanization, but also as an indicator of environmental quality. As impervious surface area increases, storm water runoff increases in velocity, quantity, temperature and pollution load. Any of these attributes can contribute to the degradation of natural hydrology and water quality. Various image processing techniques have been used to identify the impervious surfaces, however, most of the existing impervious surface mapping tools used moderate resolution imagery. In this project, the potential of standard image processing techniques to generate impervious surface data for change detection analysis …

Comparison Of Daubechies Wavelets For Hurst Parameter Estimation, Cebrai̇l Çi̇ftli̇kli̇, Ali̇ Gezer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Time scale dependence on the working nature of wavelet analysis makes it a valuable tool for Hurst parameter estimation. Similar to other wavelet-based signal processing applications, the selection of a particular wavelet type and vanishing moment in wavelet based Hurst estimation is a challenging problem. In this paper, we investigate the best Daubechies wavelet in wavelet based Hurst estimation for an exact self similar process, fractional Gaussian noise and how Daubechies vanishing moment affects the Hurst estimation accuracy. Daubechies wavelets are preferred in analysis because increasing vanishing moment does not cause excessive increase of time support of Daubechies wavelets. Thus, …

Performance Analysis Of Swarm Optimization Approaches For The Generalized Assignment Problem In Multi-Target Tracking Applications, Ali̇ Önder Bozdoğan, Asim Egemen Yilmaz, Murat Efe

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The aim of this study is to investigate the suitability of selected swarm optimization algorithms to the generalized assignment problem as encountered in multi-target tracking applications. For this purpose, we have tested variants of particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization algorithms to solve the 2D generalized assignment problem with simulated dense and sparse measurement/track matrices and compared their performance to that of the auction algorithm. We observed that, although with some modification swarm optimization algorithms provide improvement in terms of speed, they still fall behind the auction algorithm in finding the optimum solution to the problem. Among the investigated …

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We study the Maximum Principle and existence of positive weak solutions for the n \times n nonlinear elliptic system -\Delta_{P,p}u_i=\sum_{j=1}^na_{ij}(x) u_j ^{p-2}u_j+f_i(x,u_1,u_2, ... ,u_n) in \Omega, u_i=0,\ i=1,2,. n on \partial \Omega \} where the degenerated p-Laplacian defined as \Delta _{P,p}u=div [P(x) \nabla u ^{p-2}\nabla u] with p>1,p \neq 2 and P(x) is a weight function. We give some conditions for having the Maximum Principle for this system and then we prove the existence of positive weak solutions for the quasilinear system by using ``sub-super solutions method''.

A Gap Theorem For Complete Space-Like Hypersurface With Constant Scalar Curvature In Locally Symmetric Lorentz Spaces, Jiancheng Liu, Lin Wei

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let M^n be a complete space-like hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in locally symmetric Lorentz space N^{n+1}_1, S be the squared norm of the second fundamental form of M^n in N^{n+1}_1. In this paper, we obtain a gap property of S: if nP\leq \sup S\leq D(n,P) for some constants P and D(n, P), then either \sup S=nP and M^n is totally umbilical, or \sup S=D(n, P) and M^n has two distinct principal curvatures.

We study both radical transversal and transversal lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Sasakian manifolds. We give examples, investigate the geometry of distributions and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the induced connection on these submanifolds to be metric connection. We also study totally contact umbilical radical transversal and transversal lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Sasakian manifolds and obtain a classification theorem for totally contact umbilical transversal lightlike submanifolds.
