Resonant Transfer Excitation Followed By X-Ray For Boron-Like Ions, Hassan Ramadan Jan 2011

Resonant Transfer Excitation Followed By X-Ray For Boron-Like Ions, Hassan Ramadan

Turkish Journal of Physics

Theoretical cross sections for resonant transfer excitation followed by x-ray emission (RTEX) are calculated for the collisions of some ions in the series of the Boron-like ions with H_2 as a target. The calculations have been done for C II, N III, O IV, F V, Ar XIV and Fe XXII ions by folding their dielectronic recombination (DR) cross sections over the momentum distribution (Compton profile) of H_2 target gas. Calculations have been performed from both ground and metastable initial states, in LS - coupling, allowing for \triangle n = 0 excitations. In the present work, the RTEX cross sections …

2n-Dimensional At Fujii Model Instanton-Like Solutions And Coupling Constant's Role Between Instantons With Higher Derivatives, Mehmet Keçeci̇ Jan 2011

2n-Dimensional At Fujii Model Instanton-Like Solutions And Coupling Constant's Role Between Instantons With Higher Derivatives, Mehmet Keçeci̇

Turkish Journal of Physics

An instanton-like solution is considered for a class of two-dimensional conformal model with Liouville term. The model expressed here is a new higher-dimensional model with scalar-spinor interaction on even-dimensional spaces, and is a generalization of the even-dimensional Fujii model. A recurrence relation for the Fujii model and coupling constant's indices between relations with interaction constant is extracted. The behavior of Gürsey, Akdeniz-Smailagi' c and Fujii coupling constants in 4-dimensional conformal models are examined.

Electronic Structure Of The Ge And Se Vacancies In Gese Layered Semiconductor, Zakir Jahangirli

Turkish Journal of Physics

We report the results of a theoretical investigation of electronic properties of ideal cation and anion vacancies in GeSe. The calculations have been performed using self-consistent Green's function method. The bulk electronic structure is described by a tight-binding Hamiltonian in the bases sets of Linear Combinations of Atomic Orbitals (LCAO). The Green's function of the perfect crystal evaluated using an eigenfunction expansion employing wave functions and band structures obtained from a self-consistent, pseudopotential, local-density-functional calculation. The defect potential is calculated using occupied electron states of the perturbed system. Results are obtained in terms of vacancy bound states, vacancy resonances, and …

Resonance Phenomena And Time Asymmetric Quantum Mechanics, Arno Rudolf Bohm, Fati̇h Erman, Haydar Uncu Jan 2011

Resonance Phenomena And Time Asymmetric Quantum Mechanics, Arno Rudolf Bohm, Fati̇h Erman, Haydar Uncu

Turkish Journal of Physics

This article is a review of time asymmetric quantum theory and its consequences applied to the resonance and decay phenomena. We first give some phenomenological results about resonances and decaying states to support the popular idea that resonances characterized by a width \Gamma and decaying states characterized by a lifetime \tau are different appearances of the same physical entity. Based on Weisskopf-Wigner (WW) methods, one obtains approximately \frac{\hbar}{\tau}\approx \Gamma. However, using standard axioms of quantum physics it is not possible to establish a rigorous theory to which the various WW methods can be considered as approximations. In standard quantum theory, …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The tetradentate ligand 6,6'-diacetyl-2,2'-bipyridine dioxime (L) was obtained in high yield by the condensation reaction of 6,6'-diacetyl-2,2'-bipyridine with hydroxyl amine in alkaline solution. Density functional calculations and 3D modeling of the structure at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory for L revealed that the energy difference between the global trans conformer (trans-L), which possesses the C_{2h} point group, and the distorted cis conformer (cis-L) was 5.214 kcal/mol. Synthesis and characterization of the metal complexes with Cu(I), Cu(II), Pt(II), and Pd(II) metal ions were reported. L acted as a N_4-donor ligand to coordinate to the metal centers via N atoms of the …

Theoretical Characterization Of Non-Covalent Weakly Bound Clusters Through The Application Of Sophisticated Computational Quantum Chemistry Methodologies And The Development Of Integrated Fragmentation Techniques, Desiree Bates

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Non-covalent, weakly bound clusters have been and remain of significant interest to many researchers. However, with computational studies, accurate description of these interactions requires sophisticated electronic structure methods employing large basis sets. This methodology becomes extremely computationally demanding as the size of the system increases. This work presents benchmark data and explores methods for obtaining highly accurate ab initio results for larger systems at greatly reduced computational costs. CCSD(T) complete basis set limit interaction energies are presented for a variety of parallel-slipped π...π dimers and low-lying isomers of (h2o)6. The calibration of a 2-body:Many-body fragmentation method …

Use Of Sarima Models To Assess Data-Poor Fisheries: A Case Study With A Sciaenid Fishery Off Portugal, Nuno Prista, Norou Diawara, Maria J. Costa, Cynthia M. Jones

OES Faculty Publications

Research on assessment and monitoring methods has primarily focused on fisheries with long multivariate data sets. Less research exists on methods applicable to data-poor fisheries with univariate data sets with a small sample size. In this study, we examine the capabilities of seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) models to fit, forecast, and monitor the landings of such data-poor fisheries. We use a European fishery on meagre (Sciaenidae: Argyrosomus regius), where only a short time series of landings was available to model (n=60 months), as our case-study. We show that despite the limited sample size, a SARIMA model could …

Different Degrees Of Partial Melting Of The Enriched Mantle Source For Plio−Quaternary Basic Volcanism, Toprakkale (Osmaniye) Region, Southern Turkey, Utku Bağci, Musa Alpaslan, Robert Frei, Mehmet Ali̇ Kurt, Abi̇di̇n Temel

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Toprakkale (Osmaniye) region, located in the Yumurtalık fault zone in southern Turkey, contains Quaternary volcanic rocks, shown by their mineralogical and petrographical features to be alkali basaltic and basanitic. These alkaline rocks are enriched in the large ion lithophile elements (LILE) Ba, Th and U, and show light rare earth element (LREE) enrichment relative to heavy rare earth element (HREE) on primitive mantle trace and rare earth element patterns that indicate different partial melting of the same source. The isotopic 87Sr/86Sr ratio is relatively low (0.703534-0.703575 for the alkali basalts and 0.703120-0.703130 for the basanites) and the 143Nd/144Nd ratio …

Integrated Biostratigraphy Of Eocene Deposits In The Gubs Section (Northern Caucasus) With Special Attention To The Ypresian/Lutetian Boundary And To The Peritethyan-Tethyan Correlation, Elena Zakrevskaya, Vladimir Beniamovsky, György Less, Mária Báldi-Beke

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Ypresian to Priabonian Gubs river section, in the Adygean high of the northern slope of the Caucasus, is a rare locality, in whichYpresian-Lutetian representative larger benthic foraminifera coexist with planktonic Foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton. This provides a good opportunity to apply and refine the zonal Ypresian-Lutetian scheme of the Crimean-Caucasus region, to correlate the zonal subdivision of the three most important Palaeogene groups of microfossils and to give a new insight on the position of the Ypresian/Lutetian boundary. About 50 species and subspecies of larger foraminifera, represented by orthophragmines (Discocyclina, Nemkovella, Orbitoclypeus and Asterocyclina) and nummulitids (Nummulites and Operculina) …

Sensor-Based Autonomous Pipeline Monitoring Robotic System, Jong-Hoon Kim Jan 2011

Sensor-Based Autonomous Pipeline Monitoring Robotic System, Jong-Hoon Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The field of robotics applications continues to advance. This dissertation addresses the computational challenges of robotic applications and translations of actions using sensors. One of the most challenging fields for robotics applications is pipeline-based applications which have become an indispensable part of life. Proactive monitoring and frequent inspections are critical in maintaining pipeline health. However, these tasks are highly expensive using traditional maintenance systems, knowing that pipeline systems can be largely deployed in an inaccessible and hazardous environment. Thus, we propose a novel cost effective, scalable, customizable, and autonomous sensor-based robotic system, called SPRAM System (Sensor-based Autonomous Pipeline Monitoring Robotic …

Data-Aware Workflow Scheduling In Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Dengpan Yin Jan 2011

Data-Aware Workflow Scheduling In Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Dengpan Yin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Data transferring in scientific workflows gradually attracts more attention due to large amounts of data generated by complex scientific workflows will significantly increase the turnaround time of the whole workflow. It is almost impossible to make an optimal or approximate optimal scheduling for the end-to-end workflow without considering the intermediate data movement. In order to reduce the complexity of the workflow-scheduling problem, most researches done so far are constrained by many unrealistic assumptions, which result in non-optimal scheduling in practice. A constraint imposed by most researchers in their algorithms is that a computation site can only start the execution of …

Selection And Enumeration Of Low Epcam Expressing Breast Cancer Ctcs Using A High Throughput Microfluidic Device, Brandy Charon Snowden

LSU Master's Theses

Breast cancer cells overexpress EpCAM that can be used as a marker to select breast cancer CTCs from heterogeneous clinical samples, even when present in low abundance. This study used MDA-MB-231 cells which have a low expression level of EpCAM (1.7 x 103 binding sites per cell.3) Herein, we will report on the use of antiEpCAM antibodies immobilized onto the surface of a capture bed poised within a PMMA microchip that was fabricated into an HTMSU used for selection of breast cancer CTCs seeded into a buffer solution. The microchannel walls within the capture bed were UV modified for 5, …

The First Cave Occurrence Of Orpiment (As₂S₃) From The Sulfuric Acid Caves Of Aghia Paraskevi (Kassandra Peninsula, N. Greece), Georgios Lazaridis, Vasilios Melfos, Lambrini Papadopoulou Jan 2011

The First Cave Occurrence Of Orpiment (As₂S₃) From The Sulfuric Acid Caves Of Aghia Paraskevi (Kassandra Peninsula, N. Greece), Georgios Lazaridis, Vasilios Melfos, Lambrini Papadopoulou

International Journal of Speleology

Orpiment, tamarugite and pickeringite occur in close association above the surface of thermal water cave pools in the active sulfuric acid caves of Aghia Paraskevi on the Kassandra peninsula, northern Greece. Gypsum also occurs as small interstitial crystals or encrustations. Orpiment is of high significance since it has not previously been reported as a cave mineral. In addition, tamarugite and pickeringite rarely occur in karst caves. Water from a borehole and a spring is of Na-Cl type and contains traces of CO2 and H2S. The B/Cl ratios indicate seawater participation with a possible mixing with geothermal water …

Black Mn-Fe Crusts As Markers Of Abrupt Palaeoenvironmental Changes In El Soplao Cave (Cantabria, Spain), Fernando Gázquez, Jose Maria Calaforra, Paolo Forti

International Journal of Speleology

Peculiar iron and manganese deposits coating walls, floors and ceilings of many galleries are one of the special features of the El Soplao Cave (Cantabria, Spain). These speleothems appear to have been deposited over wall clay deposits, as well as forming part of flowstones. Structure of crusts is essentially amorphous but several manganese and iron oxides were identified like goethite and birnessite, though all occur with a low degree of crystallinity. In the outer layer of the crusts, alteration iron minerals appear that derive from previous minerals in a process probably mediated by microorganisms. EDX microanalyses report fairly high values …

Characterization Of Photon Counting Czt Detectors For Medical X-Ray Imaging And Spectroscopy, Shannon Fritz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to characterize a photon counting cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector for medical x-ray imaging and spectroscopy purposes. The overall aim was to characterize CZT detector properties and to develop modifications and correction methods to address the limiting factors, making the detector clinically viable. Methods: Hole trapping issues were investigated through simulation and experiments with a large area single pixel CZT detector under three different irradiation geometries: edge-on, surface-on, and tilted angle irradiation. Characteristic x-ray escape was simulated using Monte Carlo methods and compared to measurements with a small pixel CZT imaging detector. Monoenergetic …

Homodyne Detection For Laser-Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors, Tobin Thomas Fricke Jan 2011

Homodyne Detection For Laser-Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors, Tobin Thomas Fricke

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Gravitational waves are ripples of space-time predicted by Einstein's theory of General Relativity. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), part of a global network of gravitational wave detectors, seeks to detect these waves and study their sources. The LIGO detectors were upgraded in 2008 with the dual goals of increasing the sensitivity (and likelihood of detection) and proving techniques for Advanced LIGO, a major upgrade currently underway. As part of this upgrade, the signal extraction technique was changed from a heterodyne scheme to a form of homodyne detection called DC readout. The DC readout system includes a new optical filter …
