Investigation Of Luhn's Claim On Information Retrieval, İlker Kocabaş, Beki̇r Taner Di̇nçer, Bahar Karaoğlan Jan 2011

Investigation Of Luhn's Claim On Information Retrieval, İlker Kocabaş, Beki̇r Taner Di̇nçer, Bahar Karaoğlan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, we show how Luhn's claim about the degree of importance of a word in a document can be related to information retrieval. His basic idea is transformed into z-scores as the weights of terms for the purpose of modeling term frequency (tf) within documents. The Luhn-based models represented in this paper are considered as the TF component of proposed TF \times IDF weighing schemes. Moreover, the final term weighting functions appropriate for the TF \times IDF weighting scheme are applied to TREC-6, -7, and -8 databases. The experimental results show relevance to Luhn's claim by having high …

Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. Let G be a semi-direct product of the form (Z/`Z) b o Z/pZ where b is a positive integer and ` is a prime distinct from p. In this paper, we study Galois covers ψ : Z → P 1 k ramified only over ∞ with Galois group G. We find the minimal genus of a curve Z which admits a covering map of this form and we give an explicit formula for this genus in terms of ` and p. The minimal genus occurs when b equals the …

The Carbon Footprint Associated With Water Management Policy Options In The Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, Eleeja Shrestha, Sajjad Ahmad, Walter Johnson, Jacimaria R. Batista

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

A system dynamics model was developed to estimate the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with conveyance of water from the water source to the distribution laterals of the Las Vegas Valley. In addition, the impact of several water management policies, including water conservation, reuse, and population growth rate change was evaluated. The results show that, at present, nearly 0.53 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year are released due to energy use for water conveyance in distribution laterals of the Valley from Lake Mead, located 32.2 km (20 miles) southeast of the Las Vegas at an …

Stochastic Optimal Control Design For Nonlinear Networked Control System Via Neuro Dynamic Programming Using Input-Output Measurements, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Neuro dynamic programming (NDP) techniques for optimal control of nonlinear network control system (NNCS) are not addressed in the literature. Therefore, in this paper, a novel NNCS representation incorporating the unknown system uncertainties and network imperfections is introduced first by using input and output measurements. Then, an online neural network (NN) identifier is introduced to estimate the control coefficient matrix. Subsequently, the critic NN and action NN are employed along with the NN identifier to determine the forward-in-time, time-Based stochastic optimal control of NNCS without using value and policy iterations. Instead, value function and control inputs are updated at every …

Estimation Of Nox Emissions From Delhi Using Car Max-Doas Observations And Comparison With Omi Satellite Data, R. Shaiganfar, S. Beirle, Manish Sharma, A. Chauhan, Ramesh P. Singh, T. Wagner

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We present the first Multi-Axis-(MAX-) DOAS observations in India performed during April 2010 and January 2011 in Delhi and nearby regions. The MAX-DOAS instrument was mounted on a car roof, which allowed us to perform measurements along individual driving routes. From car MAX-DOAS observations along closed circles around Delhi, together with information on wind speed and direction, the NOx emissions from the greater Delhi area were determined: our estimate of 4.4 x 10(25) molecules s(-1) is found to be slightly lower than the corresponding emission estimates using the EDGAR emission inventory and substantially smaller compared to a recent study by …

Eyes Don't Lie: Understanding Users' First Impressions On Website Design Using Eye Tracking, Sirjana Dahal

Masters Theses

"Websites are becoming more prevalent these days. They need to create a favorable first impression on the users during initial exposure. After allocating their attention to stimuli, users form a cognitive representation of the visual information leading to first impression. Hence, first impression is important to evaluate the effectiveness of a website. This research tries to examine the amount of exposure time needed to form first impression; identify the web design factors that influence the formation of users' first impression; study the emotional responses of users on website design; and finally understand the relationship between first impression and eye movement. …

Classroom Manipulative To Engage Students In Mathematical Modeling Of Disease Spread: 1 + 1 = Achoo!, H. Gaff, M. Lyons, G. Watson

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Infectious diseases ranging from the common cold to cholera affect our society physically, emotionally, ecologically, and economically. Yet despite their importance and impact, there remains a lack of effective teaching materials for epidemiology and disease ecology in K-12, undergraduate, and graduate curricula [2]. To address this deficit, we've developed a classroom lesson with three instructional goals: (1) Familiarize students on basic concepts of infectious disease ecology; (2) Introduce students to a classic compartmental model and its applications in epidemiology; (3) Demonstrate the application and importance of mathematical modeling as a tool in biology. The instructional strategy uses a game-based mathematical …

Making Memory: Techne, Technology, And The Refashioning Of Contemporary Memory, Kimberly Lacey Jan 2011

Making Memory: Techne, Technology, And The Refashioning Of Contemporary Memory, Kimberly Lacey

Wayne State University Dissertations

My dissertation answers two questions: Does the tension between interactive technologies and rhetoric re-shape the nature and relevance of the canon of memory? Do interactive technologies affect the ways we remember and persuade? I argue that my interpretation of techne suggests possibilities for the creation and production of new types of memory in combination with digital media. To interrogate this connection, I suggest three interpretations of the Greek concept, techne: as a process that is inherently productive; as a force that renegotiates contemporary sources of social power; and as a skill that balances expert knowledge with instrumentality. I explore …

Multi-Objective Cultural Algorithms, Dapeng Liu Jan 2011

Multi-Objective Cultural Algorithms, Dapeng Liu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Evolutionary algorithms, including the Cultural Algorithms and other bio-inspired approaches are frequently used to solve problems that are not tractable for traditional approaches. Previously, research in the field of evolutionary optimization has focused on single-objective problems. On the contrary, most real-world problems involve more than one objective where these objectives may conflict with each other.

The newest implementation of the Cultural Algorithms to solve multi-objective optimization is named MOCAT. It is not the first time that the Cultural Algorithms have been used to solve multi-objective problems. Nonetheless, it is the first time that the Cultural Algorithms systematically merge techniques that …

Multi-Scale And Multi-Spectral Shape Analysis: From 2d To 3d, Zhaoqiang Lai Jan 2011

Multi-Scale And Multi-Spectral Shape Analysis: From 2d To 3d, Zhaoqiang Lai

Wayne State University Dissertations

Shape analysis is a fundamental aspect of many problems in computer graphics and computer vision, including shape matching, shape registration, object recognition and classification. Since the SIFT achieves excellent matching results in 2D image domain, it inspires us to convert the 3D shape analysis to 2D image analysis using geometric maps. However, the major disadvantage of geometric maps is that it introduces inevitable, large distortions when mapping large, complex and topologically complicated surfaces to a canonical domain. It is demanded for the researchers to construct the scale space directly on the 3D shape.

To address these research issues, in this …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Non-Normal Distributions On Tests Of Equivalence, Linda Ellington Jan 2011

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Non-Normal Distributions On Tests Of Equivalence, Linda Ellington

Wayne State University Dissertations

Statistical theory and its application provide the foundation to modern systematic inquiry in the behavioral, physical and social sciences disciplines (Fisher, 1958; Wilcox, 1996). It provides the tools for scholars and researchers to operationalize constructs, describe populations, and measure and interpret the relations between populations and variables (Weinbach & Grinnell, 1997; Wilcox, 1996). Given that the majority of real data analysis in the behavioral and social sciences is comprised of non-normally distributed data, it is important that researchers be aware of the effects of non-normal distributions on the probability of detecting equivalence between populations.

The present study examined the effects …

Nucleic acids are the biomolecules that encodes all the genetic information necessary for cellular metabolism. Binding of small molecules to DNA or RNA can alter their structures; perturb their functions as well as interactions with proteins and other ligands. This thesis focuses on the biophysical study of the interactions of three planar compounds with TAR 32 DNA (32 ntds DNA in HIV-1 LTR, Figure. The purpose for this study is to understand the binding modes of some of the potential drug target compounds, which will be useful for future rational drug design strategies.

Algebraic Structures Using Super Interval Matrices, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2011

Algebraic Structures Using Super Interval Matrices, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The advantage of using super interval matrices is that one can build only one vector space using m × n interval matrices, but in case of super interval matrices we can have several such spaces depending on the partition on the interval matrix.

This book has seven chapters. Chapter one is introductory in nature, just introducing the super interval matrices or interval super matrices. In chapter two essential operations on super interval matrices are defined. Further in this chapter algebraic structures are defined on these super interval matrices using these operation. Using these super interval matrices semirings and semivector spaces …

Algebraic Structures Using Natural Class Of Intervals, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2011

Algebraic Structures Using Natural Class Of Intervals, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Authors in this book introduce a new class of intervals called the natural class of intervals, also known as the special class of intervals or as natural intervals. These intervals are built using increasing intervals, decreasing intervals and degenerate intervals. We say an interval [a, b] is an increasing interval if a < b for any a, b in the field of reals R. An interval [a, b] is a decreasing interval if a > b and the interval [a, b] is a degenerate interval if a = b for a, b in the field of reals R. The natural class of intervals consists of the collection of increasing intervals, decreasing intervals and the degenerate intervals. Clearly R is contained in the natural …

Interval Algebraic Bistructures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2011

Interval Algebraic Bistructures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Authors in this book construct interval bistructures using only interval groups, interval loops, interval semigroups and interval groupoids. Several results enjoyed by these interval bistructures are described. By this method, we obtain interval bistructures which are associative or non associative or quasi associative. The term quasi is used mainly in the interval bistructure B = B1 ∪ B2 (or in n-interval structure) if one of B1 (or B2) enjoys an algebraic property and the other does not enjoy that property (one section of interval structure satisfies an algebraic property and the remaining section does not satisfy that particular property). The …

Dsm Super Vector Space Of Refined Labels, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors for the first time introduce the notion of supermatrices of refined labels. Authors prove super row matrix of refined labels form a group under addition. However super row matrix of refined labels do not form a group under product; it only forms a semigroup under multiplication. In this book super column matrix of refined labels and m × n matrix of refined labels are introduced and studied. We mainly study this to introduce to super vector space of refined labels using matrices. We in this book introduce the notion of semifield of refined labels using which …

Gis Data: Northampton County, Virginia Shoreline Inventory Report, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Sharon Killeen, Carl Hershner, Karinna Nunez, Karen Reay, Tamia Rudnicky, Daniel E. Schatt Jan 2011

Gis Data: Northampton County, Virginia Shoreline Inventory Report, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Sharon Killeen, Carl Hershner, Karinna Nunez, Karen Reay, Tamia Rudnicky, Daniel E. Schatt

Data

The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three tiered shoreline assessment approach. In most cases this assessment characterizes conditions that can be observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions:

1 ) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2 ) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3 ) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes. Hand-held GPS units are used to log features observed in the field.

Three …

The gravitational-wave (GW) sky may include nearby pointlike sources as well as stochastic backgrounds. We perform two directional searches for persistent GWs using data from the LIGO S5 science run: one optimized for pointlike sources and one for arbitrary extended sources. Finding no evidence to support the detection of GWs, we present 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper-limit maps of GW strain power with typical values between 2−20×10−50  strain2 Hz−1 and 5−35×10−49  strain2 Hz−1 sr−1 for pointlike and extended sources, respectively. The latter result is the first of its kind. We also set 90% C.L. limits on the narrow-band root-mean-square GW …

Magnetization Precession And Domain-Wall Structure In Cobalt-Ruthenium-Cobalt Trilayers, Zhen Li, Ralph Skomski, Sy-Hwang Liou, Steven Michalski, Mircea Chipara, Roger D. Kirby

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The magnetization dynamics of Co(5 nm)/Ru/Co(5 nm) trilayers with Ru thicknesses from 0.3–0.6 nm is experimentally and theoretically investigated. The coupling between the Co layers is antiferromagnetic (AFM) and yields a stable AFM domain structure with frozen domain walls. Comparing high-resolution magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and pump-probe measurements, we analyze the behavior of the films for different field-strength regimes. For moderate magnetic fields, pump-probe measurements provide dynamic characterization of the coupled precessional modes in the GHz range. The dynamics at small fields is realized by the pinning of AFM domain walls at inhomogeneities. The MFM images yield a domain-wall width …

Contradiction Measures And Specificity Degrees Of Basic Belief Assignments, Florentin Smarandache, Arnaud Martin, Christophe Osswald Jan 2011

Contradiction Measures And Specificity Degrees Of Basic Belief Assignments, Florentin Smarandache, Arnaud Martin, Christophe Osswald

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In the theory of belief functions, many measures of uncertainty have been introduced. However, it is not always easy to understand what these measures really try to represent. In this paper, we re-interpret some measures of uncertainty in the theory of belief functions. We present some interests and drawbacks of the existing measures. On these observations, we introduce a measure of contradiction. Therefore, we present some degrees of non-specificity and Bayesianity of a mass. We propose a degree of specificity based on the distance between a mass and its most specific associated mass. We also show how to use the …

Neutrosophic Code, Mumtaz Ali, Florentin Smarandache, Munazza Naz, Muhammad Shabir

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The idea of neutrosophic code came into my mind at that time when i was reading the literature about linear codes and i saw that, if there is data transformation between a sender and a receiver. They want to send 11and 00 as codewords. They suppose 11 for true and 00 for false. When the sender sends the these two codewords and the error occurs. As a result the receiver received 01 or 10 instead of 11 and 00. This story give a way to the neutrosophic codes and thus we introduced neutrosophic codes over finite field in this paper.
