Phytoplankton growth rates are limited by the supply of iron (Fe) in approximately one third of the open ocean, with major implications for carbon dioxide sequestration and carbon (C) biogeochemistry. To date, understanding how alteration of Fe supply changes phytoplankton physiology has focused on traditional metrics such as growth rate, elemental composition, and biophysical measurements such as photosynthetic competence (Fv/Fm). Researchers have subsequently employed transcriptomics to probe relationships between changes in Fe supply and phytoplankton physiology. Recently, studies have investigated longer-term (i.e. following acclimation) responses of phytoplankton to various Fe conditions. In the present study, the coastal diatom, Thalassiosira pseudonana, …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The redbelly yellowtail fusilier Caesio cuning has a tropical Indo-West Pacific range that straddles the Coral Triangle, a region of dynamic geological history and the highest marine biodiversity on the planet. Previous genetic studies in the Coral Triangle indicate the presence of multiple limits to connectivity. However, these studies have focused almost exclusively on benthic, reef-dwelling species. Schooling, reef-associated fusiliers (Perciformes: Caesionidae) account for a sizable portion of the annual reef catch in the Coral Triangle, yet to date, there have been no indepth studies on the population structure of fusiliers or other mid-water, reef-associated planktivores across this region. We …

Interaction Mechanism Of Benzene And Phenanthrene In Condensed Organic Matter: Importance Of Adsorption (Nanopore-Filling), Ke Sun, Yong Ran, Yu Yang, Baoshan Xing, Jingdong Mao

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Although microporosity and surface area of natural organic matter (NOM) are crucial to mechanistic evaluation of the sorption process for nonpolar organic contaminants (NOCs), they have wrongly been estimated by the N2 adsorption technique. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C NMR), and benzene, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen adsorption techniques were used to characterize structural and surface properties for different condensed NOM samples, which were related to the sorption behavior of phenanthrene (Phen). It was found that the revised Freundlich model by taking the chemical activity into account can well describe the isotherms for benzene and Phen. The benzene …

Practical End-To-End Performance Evaluation Of Backend Software Applications, Tuli Nivas Jan 2013

Practical End-To-End Performance Evaluation Of Backend Software Applications, Tuli Nivas

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

This dissertation makes contributions to four areas of performance testing - the test process itself, monitoring, automation and end-to-end performance evaluation of backend applications. The first contribution deals with the testing process. Performance testing is a key element of industrial software development, but we still encountered the following two problems. (1) While testing textbooks prescribe writing tests against performance goals, we find that it is impractical to gather from business analysts performance goals that are detailed enough for finding subtle performance bugs. (2) Once performance tests are conducted, we were asked questions such as - how do you make sure …

Toward More Composable Software-Security Policies: Tools And Techniques, Daniel Lomsak Jan 2013

Toward More Composable Software-Security Policies: Tools And Techniques, Daniel Lomsak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Complex software-security policies are dicult to specify, understand, and update. The

same is true for complex software in general, but while many tools and techniques exist

for decomposing complex general software into simpler reusable modules (packages, classes,

functions, aspects, etc.), few tools exist for decomposing complex security policies into simpler

reusable modules. The tools that do exist for modularizing policies either encapsulate

entire policies as atomic modules that cannot be decomposed or allow ne-grained policy

modularization but require expertise to use correctly.

This dissertation presents a policy-composition tool called PoliSeer [27, 26] and the

PoCo policy-composition software-security language. PoliSeer is …

Do Personality Tests Have A Place In Academic Preparation Of Undergradute Hospitality Students, Gunce Malan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This is a descriptive study that poses the questions and discussion regarding use of personality tests in prediction of future job performance of the current undergraduate hospitality students. A gap exists between the perception of the skills and competencies of high performers and the perception of hospitality students (Berezina et al., 2011; Malan, Berezina & Cobanoglu, 2012). The purpose of this study is to investigate if personality tests will help in predicting the success of students in their preferred job setting as compared to current high performers (managers).

The use of personality tests increased substantially after 1988, when the government …

Biochemical Aspects Of The Thermal Sensitivity And Energy Balance Of Polar, Tropical And Subtropical Teleosts, Eloy Martinez Jan 2013

Biochemical Aspects Of The Thermal Sensitivity And Energy Balance Of Polar, Tropical And Subtropical Teleosts, Eloy Martinez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The maintenance of a functional energy balance in ectothermic fauna could be challenging in a thermally disparate environment. Biochemical adaptations at the enzyme and membrane levels allows for a set compensatory mechanism that allow the individual to maintain an energetic surplus, thus allocating energy for growth and reproduction. The present work describes how the energetic machinery in the cell, particularly the mitochondrion, could be affected by temperature changes. More specifically, this work aimed to determine how environmental temperature affects the mitochondria energetic performance of fishes from disparate thermal regimes.

Mitochondrial ATP production efficiency was evaluated in fishes from polar, tropical …

Light-Environment Controls And Basal Resource Use Of Planktonic And Benthic Primary Production, Kara Radabaugh Jan 2013

Light-Environment Controls And Basal Resource Use Of Planktonic And Benthic Primary Production, Kara Radabaugh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Consumers in marine and estuarine environments have a strong reliance on planktonic and benthic primary production. These two basal resources form the foundation of aquatic food webs, yet the abundance of phytoplankton and benthic algae are frequently inversely related due to competition for light and nutrients. As a result, optimal habitats for benthic and planktonic consumers vary spatially and temporally. To investigate these trends, three studies were conducted focusing on light attenuation and basal resources in a bay, river, and on a continental shelf.

δ13C and δ15N stable isotopes can be used as endogenous tracers to …

Defining And Preventing Code-Injection Attacks, Donald Ray Jan 2013

Defining And Preventing Code-Injection Attacks, Donald Ray

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis shows that existing definitions of code-injection attacks (e.g., SQL-injection attacks) are flawed. The flaws make it possible for attackers to circumvent existing mechanisms, by supplying code-injecting inputs that are not recognized as such. The flaws also make it possible for benign inputs to be treated as attacks. After describing these flaws in conventional definitions of code-injection attacks, this thesis proposes a new definition, which is based on whether the symbols input to an application get used as (normal-form) values in the application's output. Because values are already fully evaluated, they cannot be considered ``code'' when injected. This simple …

In addition to the emergence of smartphones and tablets in recent years, the rise of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) has allowed mobile tracking applications to become popular and be put into many uses. Analyzing tracking records to identify points of interest (POIs) is useful for both prediction applications and research such as human behavior analysis, transportation planning, and especially travel surveys. Past research in travel surveys has shown that a GPS mobile phone-based survey is a useful tool for collecting information about individuals. Moreover, a passive travel survey collection is preferred to an active travel survey method by the …

Flexible Urban Water Distribution Systems, Seneshaw Amare Tsegaye Jan 2013

Flexible Urban Water Distribution Systems, Seneshaw Amare Tsegaye

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With increasing global change pressures such as urbanization and climate change, cities of the future will experience difficulties in efficiently managing scarcer and less reliable water resources. However, projections of future global change pressures are plagued with uncertainties. This increases the difficulty in developing urban water systems that are adaptable to future uncertainty.

A major component of an urban water system is the distribution system, which constitutes approximately 80-85% of the total cost of the water supply system (Swamee and Sharma, 2008). Traditionally, water distribution systems (WDS) are designed using deterministic assumptions of main model input variables such as water …

Boolean Partition Algebras, Joseph Anthony Van Name Jan 2013

Boolean Partition Algebras, Joseph Anthony Van Name

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A Boolean partition algebra is a pair $(B,F)$ where $B$ is a Boolean

algebra and $F$ is a filter on the semilattice of partitions of $B$ where $\bigcup F=B\setminus\{0\}$. In this dissertation, we shall investigate the algebraic theory of Boolean partition algebras and their connection with uniform spaces. In particular, we shall show that the category of complete non-Archimedean uniform spaces

is equivalent to a subcategory of the category of Boolean partition algebras, and notions such as supercompleteness

of non-Archimedean uniform spaces can be formulated in terms of Boolean partition algebras.

Algorithms And Data Structures For Efficient Timing Analysis Of Asynchronous Real-Time Systems, Yingying Zhang Jan 2013

Algorithms And Data Structures For Efficient Timing Analysis Of Asynchronous Real-Time Systems, Yingying Zhang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a framework to verify asynchronous real-time systems based on model checking. These systems are modeled by using a common modeling formalism named Labeled Petri-nets(LPNs).

In order to verify the real-time systems algorithmically, the zone-based timing analysis method is used for LPNs. It searches the state space with timing information (represented by zones). When there is a high degree of concurrency in the model, firing concurrent enabled transitions in different order may result in different zones, and these zones may be combined without affecting the verification result. Since the zone-based method could not deal with this problem efficiently, …

Exploring Local Food System Practices And Perceptions: Insights From Florida's Snap-Authorized Farmers' Markets, Leslie Babiak Jan 2013

Exploring Local Food System Practices And Perceptions: Insights From Florida's Snap-Authorized Farmers' Markets, Leslie Babiak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite heightened interest in creating local food systems that enhance health of ecologies, economies, and all members of communities, the public space of farmers' markets is far less than inherently equitable. This is particularly concerning given America's unprecedented crisis of food hardship and related disease, which disproportionately affects lower income populations. This research addresses the social justice implications of SNAP (food stamp) operations for locally oriented food systems. Pioneering practices of three of Florida's SNAP-authorized farmers' markets, and the attitudes and behaviors of one-hundred-seventy-six market patrons, were explored through customer surveys, market manager interviews, and environmental assessments. Qualitative and quantitative …

Analytic Functions With Real Boundary Values In Smirnov Classes EP, Lisa De Castro Jan 2013

Analytic Functions With Real Boundary Values In Smirnov Classes EP, Lisa De Castro

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis concerns the classes of analytic functions on bounded, n-connected domains known as the Smirnov classes Ep, where p > 0. Functions in these classes satisfy a certain growth condition and have a relationship to the more well known classes of functions known as the Hardy classes Hp. In this thesis I will show how the geometry of a given domain will determine the existence of non-constant analytic functions in Smirnov classes that possess real boundary values. This is a phenomenon that does not occur among functions in the Hardy classes.

The preliminary and background information …

Optimized Correlation Of Geophysical And Geotechnical Methods In Sinkhole Investigations: Emphasizing On Spatial Variations In West-Central Florida, Henok Gidey Kiflu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Sinkholes and sinkhole-related features in West-Central Florida (WCF) are commonly identified using geotechnical investigations such as standard penetration test (SPT) borings and geophysical methods such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). Geophysical investigation results can be used to locate drilling and field testing sites while geotechnical investigation can be used to ground truth geophysical results. Both methods can yield complementary information. Geotechnical investigations give important information about the type of soil, groundwater level and presence of low-density soils or voids at the test location, while geophysical investigations like GPR surveys have better spatial coverage and …

Structure And Function Of Pinniped Vibrissae, Christin Taylor Murphy Jan 2013

Structure And Function Of Pinniped Vibrissae, Christin Taylor Murphy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The vibrissal system of pinnipeds relies on sturdy, specialized vibrissae and supporting neural architecture apparently designed for the reception of waterborne disturbances. Although it is known that pinnipeds can use their vibrissae for fine-scale tactile discrimination and hydrodynamic detection, many aspects of vibrissal function remain poorly understood. The present work examined the adaptive significance of vibrissal structure, the sensitivity of the vibrissal system, and the signals received by this system. All of these points were considered with respect to their function in hydrodynamic reception. Four methods of study: laser vibrometry, computed tomography (CT) scanning, psychophysical testing and animal-borne tagging were …

Insight Into The Use, Perception, And Value Surrounding Domestic Water In Peru: Envisioning Demand Management In An Intermittent, Small-City, Service Context, Merril Augusta Putnam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Population growth, urbanization, degrading water quality, and climate change are making management of scarce water resources an increasingly difficult task for the domestic sector. It is recognized that in order to manage urban water resources demand management is requisite. Demand management has been experimented with in large cities of developing countries but continued focus on expanding supply overshadows its potential benefits and ultimate success. In order to manage demand, it must be measured and understood. Intermittent water services are prevalent in developing countries, but unmetered domestic water use under such conditions has not been carefully studied. This study conducted 1,149 …
