End-To-End Transmission Time-Based Opportunistic Routing Protocols For Bus Networks, Luobei Kuang, Zhijun Wang, Ming Xu, Yingwen Cheng

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Single path routing protocols for Internet access in bus networks (composed of traveling city public buses) may not achieve satisfactory performance because of frequent bus mobility. This paper studies the opportunistic routing protocols in bus networks to improve the system throughput and reduce the access delay. In this paper, we first propose an end-to-end transmission time (EET)-based opportunistic routing (OR) framework. We then derive 3 EET-based OR protocols, EETOR (EET-based OR), EETMcOR (EET-based OR with MAC contention consideration), and EETCcOR (EET-based OR with congestion control consideration), which consider 3 different EET metrics. EETOR considers the network layer transmission behavior to …

Simulation Of A Large Electric Distribution System Having Intensive Harmonics In The Industrial Zone Of Konya, Hasan Eroğlu, Musa Aydin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, measurements were taken at different points of a sample distribution system in order to analyze the levels of harmonics that appear as a day-to-day increasing problem in electrical distribution systems. According to the measurement values, the dominant harmonics have been determined and an electrical model of the system has been prepared using the SimPowerSystems toolbox from MATLAB and Simulink. The accuracy of the electrical model has been verified by the measurement and simulation values. In addition, the transformer connection types' and impedances' simulations have been presented to understand and solve the harmonic problems in electrical distribution systems. …

Actor-Critic-Based Ink Drop Spread As An Intelligent Controller, Hesam Sagha, Iman Esmaili Paeen Afrakoti, Saeed Bagherishouraki Jan 2013

Actor-Critic-Based Ink Drop Spread As An Intelligent Controller, Hesam Sagha, Iman Esmaili Paeen Afrakoti, Saeed Bagherishouraki

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces an innovative adaptive controller based on the actor-critic method. The proposed approach employs the ink drop spread (IDS) method as its main engine. The IDS method is a new trend in soft-computing approaches that is a universal fuzzy modeling technique and has been also used as a supervised controller. Its process is very similar to the processing system of the human brain. The proposed actor-critic method uses an IDS structure as an actor and a 2-dimensional plane, representing control variable states, as a critic that estimates the lifetime goodness of each state. This method is fast, simple, …

Linear Switched Reluctance Motor Control With Pic18f452 Microcontroller, Mahi̇r Dursun, Fatmagül Koç

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents the simulation, control, and experimental results of the velocity of a double-sided, 6/4-poled, 3-phased, 8 A, 24 V, 250 W, and 250 N pull force linear switched reluctance motor (LSRM). In the simulation and experimental study, the reference velocity is constant depending on the position and time. The velocity versus the position of the translator was controlled with fuzzy logic control (FLC) and proportional-integral (PI) control techniques. The motor was controlled by PI control method with a PIC18F452 microcontroller due to its low cost. The results of the velocity of a translator were compared with the simulation …

A 5-Bit 5 Gs/S Flash Adc Using Multiplexer-Based Decoder, Oktay Aytar, Ali̇ Tangel, Kudret Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a 5-bit flash analog-to-digital converter design using the 0.18-\mu m Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's CMOS technology library. The designed system consists of 2 main blocks, a comparator array, and a digital decoder. The digital decoder contains a latch, 1-of-N decoder, and fat-tree encoder units. The 1-of-N decoder is implemented using 2 \times 1 multiplexers. As a result, the active die area and the power consumption are reduced, in addition to an increase in the sampling frequency. The power supply voltage range for the overall system is \pm 0.9 V. For testing purposes, a ramp signal of between …

Detection Of Microcalcification Clusters In Digitized X-Ray Mammograms Using Unsharp Masking And Image Statistics, Peli̇n Kuş, İrfan Karagöz Jan 2013

Detection Of Microcalcification Clusters In Digitized X-Ray Mammograms Using Unsharp Masking And Image Statistics, Peli̇n Kuş, İrfan Karagöz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A fully automated method for detecting microcalcification (MC) clusters in regions of interest (ROIs) extracted from digitized X-ray mammograms is proposed. In the first stage, an unsharp masking is used to perform the contrast enhancement of the MCs. In the second stage, the ROIs are decomposed into a 2-level contourlet representation and the reconstruction is obtained by eliminating the low-frequency subband in the second level. In the third stage, statistical textural features are extracted from the ROIs and they are classified using support vector machines. To test the performance of the method, 57 ROIs selected from the Mammographic Image Analysis …

Point Modules Over Regular Graded Skew Clifford Algebras, Padmini Pillay Veerapen Jan 2013

Point Modules Over Regular Graded Skew Clifford Algebras, Padmini Pillay Veerapen

Mathematics Dissertations

In this thesis, I consider point modules over regular graded skew Clifford algebras.First, I define a notion of rank (called μ-rank) on noncommutative quadratic forms. To every (commutative) quadratic form is associated a symmetric matrix, and one has the standard notions of rank and determinant function defined on the matrix, and, thus, on the quadratic form. In 2010, in [15], the notion of quadratic form was extended to the noncommutative setting and a one-to-one correspondence was established between these quadratic forms and certain matrices. Using this generalization, I define a notion of rank (called μ-rank) for such noncommutative quadratic forms, …

Optimal Stopping For Markov Modulated Ito-Diffusion With Applications To Finance, Thomas William Seaquist Jan 2013

Optimal Stopping For Markov Modulated Ito-Diffusion With Applications To Finance, Thomas William Seaquist

Mathematics Dissertations

Despite the outstanding success of the Black-Scholes model, it relies on the assumption that drift and volatility of the underlying equity remain constant throughout time. This inaccuracy has motivated a number of interesting and innovative refinements, one of the most natural being Markov modulation. In this dissertation we analyze a variety of financially motivated optimal stopping problems under Markov modulated Ito-Diffusions. In Chapter 3, we generalize and refine a technique developed in [13] pricing an infinite time horizon American put option and we present a rigorous proof of optimality. In Chapter 3 we use this generalized technique to discover an …

Mathematical Models Of Nutrient Recycling And Toxin Production In A Gradostat, Xiaoyang Dong Jan 2013

Mathematical Models Of Nutrient Recycling And Toxin Production In A Gradostat, Xiaoyang Dong

Mathematics Dissertations

We discuss several gradostat models in which a microbial population excretes a biochemical that can get recycled back into the system as a nutrient source. Each mathematical model consists of six ordinary differential equations and represents the dynamics of harmful algal blooms in lakes with fringing coves. We examine three different situations of biochemical production which is based on the algal growth rate, mortality, and nutrient concentration, respectively. Local and global stability analysis of the equilibria predicts that algal abundance and biochemical concentration can be both washed out or persistent under different environmental conditions. All theoretical results are supported by …

Interpreting Individual Classifications Of Hierarchical Networks, Will Landecker, Michael David Thomure, Luis M.A. Bettencourt, Melanie Mitchell, Garrett T. Kenyon, Steven P. Brumby

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hierarchical networks are known to achieve high classification accuracy on difficult machine-learning tasks. For many applications, a clear explanation of why the data was classified a certain way is just as important as the classification itself. However, the complexity of hierarchical networks makes them ill-suited for existing explanation methods. We propose a new method, contribution propagation, that gives per-instance explanations of a trained network's classifications. We give theoretical foundations for the proposed method, and evaluate its correctness empirically. Finally, we use the resulting explanations to reveal unexpected behavior of networks that achieve high accuracy on visual object-recognition tasks using well-known …

Estimation Of Performance Indices For The Planning Of Sustainable Transportation Systems, Alexander Paz, Pankaj Maheshwari, Pushkin Kachroo, Sajjad Ahmad Jan 2013

Estimation Of Performance Indices For The Planning Of Sustainable Transportation Systems, Alexander Paz, Pankaj Maheshwari, Pushkin Kachroo, Sajjad Ahmad

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

In the context of sustainable transportation systems, previous studies have either focused only on the transportation system or have not used a methodology that enables the treatment of incomplete, vague, and qualitative information associated with the available data. This study proposes a system of systems (SOS) and a fuzzy logic modeling approach. The SOS includes the Transportation, Activity, and Environment systems. The fuzzy logic modeling approach enables the treatment of the vagueness associated with some of the relevant data. Performance Indices (PIs) are computed for each system using a number of performance measures. The PIs illustrate the aggregated performance of …

Global Attracting Equilibria For Coupled Systems With Ceiling Density Dependence, Eric A. Eager, Mary Hebert, Elise Hellwig, Francisco Hernandez, Richard Rebarber, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Bryan Wigianto Jan 2013

Global Attracting Equilibria For Coupled Systems With Ceiling Density Dependence, Eric A. Eager, Mary Hebert, Elise Hellwig, Francisco Hernandez, Richard Rebarber, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Bryan Wigianto

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a system of two difference equations modeling the dynamics of a coupled population with two patches. Each patch can house only a limited number of individuals (called a carrying capacity) because resources like food and breeding sites are limited in each patch. We assume that the population in each patch is governed by a linear model until reaching a carrying capacity in each patch, resulting in map which is nonlinear and not sublinear. We analyze the global attractors of this model.

An Interdisciplinary Research Course In Theoretical Ecology For Young Undergraduates, Glenn Ledder, Brigitte Tenhumberg, G. Travis Adams

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

As part of an interdepartmental effort to attract promising young students to research at the interface between mathematics and biology, we created a course in which groups of recent high school graduates and first-year college students conducted a research project in insect population dynamics. The students set up experiments, collected data, used the data to develop mathematical models, tested their models against further experiments, and prepared their results for dissemination. The course was self-contained in that the lecture portion developed the mathematical, statistical, and biological background needed for the research. A special writing component helped students learn the principles of …

Daily Temperature Fluctuations Unpredictably Influence Developmental Rate And Morphology At A Critical Early Larval Stage In A Frog, Juliana M. Arrighi, Ezra S. Lencer, Advait Jukar, Daesik Park, Patrick C. Phillips, Robert H. Kaplan

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Environmental temperature has profound consequences for early amphibian development and many field and laboratory studies have examined this. Most laboratory studies that have characterized the influence of temperature on development in amphibians have failed to incorporate the realities of diel temperature fluctuations (DTF), which can be considerable for pond-breeding amphibians.

Results: We evaluated the effects of different ecologically relevant ranges of DTF compared with effects of constant temperatures on development of embryos and larvae of the Korean fire-bellied toad (Bombina orientalis). We constructed thermal reaction norms for developmental stage, snout- vent length, and tail length by fitting …

A large proportion of today’s digital data has a spatial component. The storage and effective 10 management of such data poses particular challenges. Nowhere is this truer than with Light De-11 tection and Ranging (LiDAR), where datasets of even small geographic areas may contain sever-12 al hundred millions points. Currently available spatial information systems do not provide suita-13 ble support for 3D data. As a consequence, while a specific system can be used to store the data, 14 another has to be used to process it. Typically several software applications are used to analyze 15 and process LiDAR data, requiring …

Cybercrime is a growing problem in the United States and worldwide. Many questions remain unanswered as to the proper role and scope of criminal law in addressing socially-undesirable actions affecting and conducted through the use of computers and modern information technologies. This Article tackles perhaps the most exigent question in U.S. cybercrime law, the scope of activities that should be subject to criminal sanction under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), the federal "anti-hacking" statute.

At the core of current CFAA debate is the question of whether private contracts, such as website "Terms of Use" or organizational "Acceptable Use …

N-Valued Refined Neutrosophic Logic And Its Applications To Physics, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper we present a short history of logics: from particular cases of 2-symbol or numerical valued logic to the general case of n-symbol or numerical valued logic. We show generalizations of 2-valued Boolean logic to fuzzy logic, also from the Kleene’s and Lukasiewicz’ 3-symbol valued logics or Belnap’s 4-symbol valued logic to the most general n-symbol or numerical valued refined neutrosophic logic. Two classes of neutrosophic norm (n-norm) and neutrosophic conorm (n-conorm) are defined. Examples of applications of neutrosophic logic to physics are listed in the last section. Similar generalizations can be done for n-Valued Refined Neutrosophic Set, …

Introduction To Neutrosophic Measure, Neutrosophic Integral, And Neutrosophic Probability, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book, we introduce for the first time the notions of neutrosophic measure and neutrosophic integral, and we develop the 1995 notion of neutrosophic probability. We present many practical examples.

It is possible to define the neutrosophic measure and consequently the neutrosophic integral and neutrosophic probability in many ways, because there are various types of indeterminacies, depending on the problem we need to solve. Neutrosophics study the indeterminacy. Indeterminacy is different from randomness. It can be caused by physical space materials and type of construction, by items involved in the space, etc.
