A Novel Dynamic Bandwidth Selection Method For Thinning Noisy Point Clouds, Mehmet Öztürk, Zeynep Hasirci

In this paper, we propose a dynamic bandwidth selection method for thinning noisy point clouds into curves. Due to the nonhomogeneous distribution of noise or varying curvature of the data, the thinning procedure requires a dynamically adjusted bandwidth along the curve. On the other hand, the selected local region must be sorted along a suitable direction vector for local curve fitting purposes. The contribution of this paper to the field is 2-folded: first, a normalized eigenvalue analysis-based method is used to determine the best local bandwidth. Spam has become one of the most significant problems for Internet communication and users today. The traditional filtering methods and signature-based spam blocking systems that have come into prominence recently fall short, as statistics demonstrate that spam further mounts up day after day. In this study, a new method is recommended to block spam mails. In this recommended method, a mail sending session is verified during mail envelope communication by adding small attachments to the simple mail transfer protocol, so spam mails can be blocked before leaving the sender domain or relay machine. Growing concerns over environmental impacts, improvement of the overall network conditions, and rebate programs offered by governments have led to an increase in the number of distributed generation (DG) units in commercial and domestic electric power production. However, a large number of DG units in a distribution system may sometimes contribute to high levels of harmonic distortion, even though the emission levels of the individual DG units comply with the harmonic standards. This paper deals with the capability of a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to attenuate the subsynchronous resonance (SSR). Two well-known controllers are designed, namely a conventional damping controller (CDC) and fuzzy logic damping controller (FLDC). These 2 damping controllers are added to a main control loop of a SSSC operating as a SSR damping controller. Designing an automated system for classifying DNA microarray data is an extremely challenging problem because of its high dimension and low amount of sample data. In this paper, a hybrid statistical pattern recognition algorithm is proposed to reduce the dimensionality and select the predictive genes for the classification of cancer. Colon cancer gene expression profiles having 62 samples of 2000 genes were used for the experiment. A gene subset of 6 highly informative genes was selected by the algorithm, which provided a classification accuracy of 93.5%.

Eye pupil detection systems have become increasingly popular in image processing and computer vision applications in medical systems. In this study, a video-based eye pupil detection system is developed for diagnosing bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a condition in which people experience changes in cognitive processes and abilities, including reduced attentional and executive capabilities and impaired memory. In order to detect these abnormal behaviors, a number of neuropsychological tests are also designed to measure attentional and executive abilities. This paper is concerned with automated tuning of parameters of algorithms to handle heterogeneous and large instances. We propose an automated parameter tuning framework with the capability to provide instance-specific parameter configurations. We report preliminary results on the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) and show that our framework provides a significant improvement on solutions qualities with much smaller tuning computational time.

This study examines the value of the time that a user spends to participate in a social game. We focus on how a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) vendor can establish prices to encourage participation and retain its players. We estimate value through an application of the hedonic pricing model and analyze a data set for an MMORPG in Korea. The results permit us to estimate the value of game-playing time in monetary terms. Organic aggregates provide a favorable habitat for aquatic microbes, are efficiently filtered by shellfish, and may play a major role in the dynamics of aquatic pathogens. Quantifying this role requires understanding how pathogen abundance in the water and aggregate size interact to determine the presence and abundance of pathogen cells on individual aggregates. We build upon current understanding of the dynamics of bacteria and bacterial grazers on aggregates to develop a model for the dynamics of a bacterial pathogen species. Intercalibration has a strict metrological definition, but in brief, it's an open sharing of methods and results between laboratories to achieve the most accurate data with the fewest random and systematic errors. In many continental margin Sediments, a deep reaction zone exists which is separated from remineralization processes near the sediment surface. Here, methane diffuses upward to a depth where it is oxidized by downwardly diffusing sulfate. However, the methane sources that drive this anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in the sulfate-methane transition zone (SMT) may vary among sites. In particular, these sources can be thought of as either (i) "internal" sources from in situ methanogenesis (regardless of where it occurs in the sediment column) that are ultimately coupled to organic matter deposition and burial, or (ii) "external" sources such as hydrocarbon …

Multiple analyses of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from pore waters were conducted to define the processes that govern carbon balance in peatlands: (1) source, reactivity, and transport of DOC with respect to vegetation, peat, and age of carbon substrate, (2) reactivity of DOC with respect to molecular size, and (3) lability to photoxidation of surficial DOC. We found that surface organic production fuels heterotrophic respiration at depth in advection-dominated peatlands, especially in fens. Fen DOC was Δ14Cenriched relative to the surrounding fen peat, and fen respiration products were similar to this enriched DOC indicating that DOC was the …

Microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS) result from the response of microbial mats to physical sediment dynamics. MISS are cosmopolitan and found in many modern environments, including shelves, tidal flats, lagoons, riverine shores, lakes, interdune areas, and sabkhas. The structures record highly diverse communities of microbial mats and have been reported from numerous intervals in the geological record up to 3.2 billion years (Ga) old. We present a method for the isolation and off-line isotope analysis of formate and acetate in marine samples. Organic acids are separated by high performance liquid chromatography and collected in glass Exetainer® screw-capped vials that have been prespiked with an oxidant and flushed with helium. The vials are subsequently heated to convert the organic compounds to CO2 for radiocarbon and δ13C analysis. Small aliquots are sampled for measurement of δ13C by isotope ratio mass spectrometry, whereas the majority of the CO2 is saved for radiocarbon analysis by accelerator mass spectrometry using a gas ion …

This is the second paper in D-Lib Magazine about the ResourceSync effort conducted by the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and the Open Archives Initiative (OAI). "Microarray technology is a useful tool for studying the expression levels of thousands of genes or exons within a single experiment. Data from microarray experiments present many challenges for researchers since costly resources often limit the experimenter to small sample sizes and large amounts of data are generated. The researcher must carefully consider the appropriate statistical analysis to use that aligns with the experimental design employed. Quantifying landslide character is an important aspect of understanding hillslope-channel interactions. Spectral analysis of high-resolution, LiDAR derived, DEMs was carried out following methods described by Booth et al. (2009) to determine the characteristic spectral signature inherent in different styles of landslides in the Owyhee River Canyon in southeastern Oregon. The main factor in landslide generation in this location is a lithologic contact in which a coherent basaltic caprock overlies relatively weak sediments where most of the landslide failure surfaces originated. "The Boonsville field is one of the largest gas fields in the US located in the Fort Worth Basin, north central Texas. The highest potential reservoirs reside in the Bend Conglomerate deposited during the Pennsylvanian. The Boonsville data set is prepared by the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas, Austin, as part of the secondary gas recovery program. "The El Kasr structure was studied in order to investigate the origins and evolution of the enigmatic Desert Eyes structures of the Western Desert due to its accessibility and uniqueness among the structures. The El Kasr structure, an elongate structural basin with low limb dips, is unique among the "Desert Eyes" structures in that it: 1) occurs in isolation in otherwise horizontal sedimentary rock, 2) the long dimension of the basin is oriented NNW, 3) it is closely spatially associated with the less common NNW fault zones, and 4) is composite in nature. Cryo-electron microscopy is an experimental technique that is able to produce 3D gray-scale images of protein molecules. In contrast to other experimental techniques, cryo-electron microscopy is capable of visualizing large molecular complexes such as viruses and ribosomes. At medium resolution, the positions of the atoms are not visible and the process cannot proceed. The medium-resolution images produced by cryo-electron microscopy are used to derive the atomic structure of the proteins in de novo modeling. The skeletons of the 3D gray-scale images are used to interpret important information that is helpful in de novo modeling. Unfortunately, not all features of the …
