Dialect Or A New Language: A Possible Explanation Of The 70% Mutual Intelligibility Threshold, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Dialect Or A New Language: A Possible Explanation Of The 70% Mutual Intelligibility Threshold, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In most cases, linguists have a consensus on when people from different regions speak two different dialects of the same language (and can, thus, understand each other reasonably well) or two different languages (in this case, their mutual intelligibility is limited). In most cases, this intuitive consensus corresponds to a 70% mutual intelligibility threshold: if at least 70% of the words from one region are understandable to people from another region, then these are two dialects, otherwise these are two different languages. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this 70% threshold.

Feasible Algorithms For Lattice And Directed Subspaces, Jennifer (Hamlyn) Del Valle, Vladik Kreinovich, Piotr Wojciechowski
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In some practical situations (e.g., in econometrics), it is important to check whether a given linear subspace of a space Rm with component-wise order is a lattice -- and if it is not, whether it is at least a directed ordered space. Because of the practical importance, it is desirable to have feasible algorithms for solving these problems -- which in Computer Science is usually interpreted as algorithms whose computation time does not exceed a polynomial of the length of the input. No such algorithms were previously known. In this paper, we present feasible algorithms for solving both problems.

To find the current level of a student's knowledge, we use a sequence of problems of increasing complexity; if a student can solve a problem, the system generates a more complex one; if a student cannot solve a problem, the system generates an easier one. To find a proper testing scheme, we must take into account that every time a student cannot solve a problem, he/she gets discouraged. To take this into account, we define an overall effect on a student by combining "positive" and "negative" problems with different weights, and we design a testing scheme which minimizes this effect.

"And"- And "Or"-Operations For "Double", "Triple", Etc. Fuzzy Sets, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

In the traditional fuzzy logic, the expert's degree of confidence d(A & B) in a complex statement A & B (or A\/B) is uniquely determined by his/her degrees of confidence d(A) and d(B) in the statements A and B, as f&(d(A),d(B)) for an appropriate "and"-operation (t-norm). In practice, for the same degrees d(A) and d(B), we may have different degrees d(A & B) depending on the relation between A and B. The best way to take this relation into account is to explicitly elicit the corresponding degrees d(A & B) and d(A\/B), i.e., to come up with "double" …
Effects Of Sequence Context On The Binding Of Tryptophan-Containing Peptides By The Cucurbit[8]Uril-Methyl Viologen Complex, Omar A. Ali, Eric M. Olson, Adam R. Urbach
Effects Of Sequence Context On The Binding Of Tryptophan-Containing Peptides By The Cucurbit[8]Uril-Methyl Viologen Complex, Omar A. Ali, Eric M. Olson, Adam R. Urbach
Chemistry Faculty Research
This paper describes a novel assay for measuring the relative extent of peptide binding in a large parallel format and the use of this assay to explore the effects of sequence context on the binding of tryptophan (Trp)-containing peptides by the synthetic receptor comprising the noncovalent complex between cucurbit[8]uril and methyl viologen (i.e. Q8√MV). The extent of quenching of Trp fluorescence upon binding to Q8√MV was used to measure the relative extent of binding and thus the relative affinities of 104 Trp-containing peptides, in parallel, using a fluorescence plate reader. This study resulted in the remarkable observation that the identity …
Gravitational And Electromagnetic Waves On The Null Cone, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton
Gravitational And Electromagnetic Waves On The Null Cone, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton
Physics Faculty Research
Gravitational radiation is properly defined only at future null infinity, but mathematically it is estimated at a finite radius, and then extrapolated. Our group developed a characteristic waveform extraction tool, implemented in an open source code, which computes the gravitational waves infinitely far from their source, in terms of compactified null cones, by numerically solving Einstein equation. We add electromagnetic waves to the null cone, by deriving a formulation of the Einstein-Maxwell equations suitable to be numerically implemented into a characteristic code, that will evolve and calculate both the gravitational waves and their electromagnetic counterparts all the way to infinity.
Characterization Techniques And Electrolyte Separator Performance Investigation For All Vanadium Redox Flow Battery, Zhijiang Tang
Characterization Techniques And Electrolyte Separator Performance Investigation For All Vanadium Redox Flow Battery, Zhijiang Tang
Doctoral Dissertations
The all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is an excellent prospect for large scale energy storage in an electricity grid level application. High battery performance has lately been achieved by using a novel cell configuration with advanced materials. However, more work is still required to better understand the reaction kinetics and transport behaviors in the battery to guide battery system optimization and new battery material development. The first part of my work is the characterization of the battery systems with flow-through or flow-by cell configurations. The configuration difference between two cell structures exhibit significantly different polarization behavior. The battery output can …

Background
Intravascular hemolysis occurs after blood transfusion, in hemolytic anemias, and in other conditions, and is associated with hypercoagulable states. Hemolysis has been shown to potently activate platelets in vitro and in vivo, and several mechanisms have been suggested to account for this, including: (i) direct activation by hemoglobin (Hb); (ii) increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS); (iii) scavenging of nitric oxide (NO) by released Hb; and (iv) release of intraerythrocytic ADP.
Objective
To elucidate the mechanism of hemolysis-mediated platelet activation.
Methods
We used flow cytometry to detect PAC-1 binding to activated platelets for in vitro experiments, and a …

Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Measurements Of Dealloyed Porous Nicu, Kyla Koboski, Evan Nelsen, Jennifer R. Hampton
Faculty Publications
Porous metals are of interest for their high surface area and potential for enhanced catalytic behavior. Electrodeposited NiCu thin films with a range of compositions were electrochemically dealloyed to selectively remove the Cu component. The film structure, composition, and reactivity of these samples were characterized both before and after the dealloying step using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. The catalytic behavior of the dealloyed porous Ni samples towards the hydrogen evolution reaction was measured and compared to that of the as-deposited samples. The dealloyed samples were generally more reactive than their as-deposited counterparts at low overpotentials, making …

Broadcasting With Prediction And Selective Forwarding In Vehicular Networks, Jainjun Yang, Zongming Fei
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Broadcasting in vehicular networks has attracted great interest in research community and industry. Broadcasting on disseminating information to individual vehicle beyond the transmission range is based on inter-vehicle communication systems. It is crucial to broadcast messages to other vehicles as fast as possible because the messages in vehicle communication systems are often emergency messages such as accident warning or alarm. In many current approaches, the message initiator or sender selects the node among its neighbors that is farthest away from it in the broadcasting direction and then assigns the node to rebroadcast the message once the node gets out of …
Phosphate Esters, Thiophosphate Esters And Metal Thiophosphates As Lubricant Additives, David W. Johnson, John E. Hils
Phosphate Esters, Thiophosphate Esters And Metal Thiophosphates As Lubricant Additives, David W. Johnson, John E. Hils
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Phosphate esters, thiophosphate esters and metal thiophosphates have been used as lubricant additives for over 50 years. While their use has been extensive, a detailed knowledge of how they work has been a much more recent development. In this paper, the use of phosphate esters and thiophosphate esters as anti-wear or extreme pressure additives is reviewed with an emphasis on their mechanism of action. The review includes the use of alkyl phosphates, triaryl phosphates and metal containing thiophosphate esters. The mechanisms of these materials interacting with a range of iron and steel based bearing material are examined.
Optimal Matching Distances Between Categorical Sequences: Distortion And Inferences By Permutation, Juan P. Zuluaga
Optimal Matching Distances Between Categorical Sequences: Distortion And Inferences By Permutation, Juan P. Zuluaga
Culminating Projects in Applied Statistics
Sequence data (an ordered set of categorical states) is a very common type of data in Social Sciences, Genetics and Computational Linguistics.
For exploration and inference of sets of sequences, having a measure of dissimilarities among sequences would allow the data to be analyzed by techniques like clustering, multimensional scaling analysis and distance-based regression analysis. Sequences can be placed in a map where similar sequences are close together, and dissimilar ones will be far apart. Such patterns of dispersion and concentration could be related to other covariates. For example, do the employment trajectories of men and women tend to form …
Interpreting Near Infrared Hydrogen Line Ratios In T Tauri Stars, Suzan Edwards
Interpreting Near Infrared Hydrogen Line Ratios In T Tauri Stars, Suzan Edwards
Astronomy: Faculty Publications
In accreting young stars, one of the prominent spectral features in the near-infrared is the Paschen and Brackett series in emission. We examine hydrogen line ratios for 16 classical T Tauri stars from SpeX spectra and assess the trends with veiling and accretion. The observed line ratios are compared with two theoretical models for line formation: (1) Baker & Menzel’s Case B for radiative ionization and recombination and (2) a set of local line excitation calculations designed to replicate the conditions in T Tauri winds and magnetic accretion columns (KF). While the comparison between Case B and observed line ratios …

Abstract
In many ways, James A. Van Allen defined and “invented” modern space research. His example showed the way for government-university partners to pursue basic research that also served important national and international goals. He was a tireless advocate for space exploration and for the role of space science in the spectrum of national priorities.

Magneto-Transport Characteristics Of A 2d Electron System Driven To Negative Magneto-Conductivity By Microwave Photoexcitation, Ramesh G. Mani, Annika Kriisa
Magneto-Transport Characteristics Of A 2d Electron System Driven To Negative Magneto-Conductivity By Microwave Photoexcitation, Ramesh G. Mani, Annika Kriisa
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Negative diagonal magneto-conductivity/resistivity is a spectacular- and thought provoking-property of driven, far-from-equilibrium, low dimensional electronic systems. The physical response of this exotic electronic state is not yet fully understood since it is rarely encountered in experiment. The microwave-radiation-induced zero-resistance state in the high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs 2D electron system is believed to be an example where negative magneto-conductivity/resistivity is responsible for the observed phenomena. Here, we examine the magneto-transport characteristics of this negative conductivity/ resistivity state in the microwave photo-excited two-dimensional electron system (2DES) through a numerical solution of the associated boundary value problem. The results suggest, surprisingly, that a bare …
A Guide To Testing A Proportion When There May Be Misclassifications, David L. Farnsworth, Jonathan R. Bradley
A Guide To Testing A Proportion When There May Be Misclassifications, David L. Farnsworth, Jonathan R. Bradley
Articles
Ignoring possible misclassifications when testing for a proportion can lead to erroneous decisions. A statistical test is described that incorporates misclassification rates into the analysis. Easily checked safeguards that ensure that the test is appropriate are given. Additionally, the test provides a procedure when the hypothesis stipulates that the proportion is zero. Applications of the test are illustrated with examples which show that it is practical. Comprehensive guidance is supplied for the practitioner.
A Study Of The Optical And Negative Ion Properties Of Selected Chiral Molecules, Jason Michael Lambert
A Study Of The Optical And Negative Ion Properties Of Selected Chiral Molecules, Jason Michael Lambert
Doctoral Dissertations
Chirality is subtle geometric property where objects lack reflection plane symmetry. In this thesis I study three chiral molecules using a combination of experimental and theoretical methods to elucidate the relationships between conformation freedom, solvent choice, and temperature. The importance of nuclear motion when predicting the optical rotation is explored. For carvone, corrections with each nuclear mode coordinate is important. Predictions of the ORD have the incorrect sign without the inclusion of vibrational corrections. For the case of two newly synthesized amino acid derivatives the vibrational corrections did not correct the sign of the calculated ORD to bring it into …

The Mx/G/1 Queue With Unreliable Server, Delayed Repairs, And Bernoulli Vacation Schedule Under T-Policy, L. Tadj, G. Choudhury
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper we study a batch arrival queuing system. The server may break down while delivering service. However, repair is not provided immediately, rather it is delayed for a random amount of time. At the end of service, the server may process the next customer if any are available, or may take a vacation to execute some other job. Finally, the server implements the T-policy. We describe for this system an optimal management policy. Numerical examples are provided.
Local Influence In Bayesian Elliptically Contoured-Ordinal Model For Mixed Data, Ehsan B. Samani
Local Influence In Bayesian Elliptically Contoured-Ordinal Model For Mixed Data, Ehsan B. Samani
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper develops a new class of joint modeling of mixed correlated ordinal and continuous responses with elliptically contoured errors. This joint model includes the latent variable approach of using an elliptically contoured distribution for mixed ordinal and continuous responses. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling algorithm is described for estimating the posterior distribution of the parameters. For sensitivity analysis to investigate the perturbation from associate responses, it is demonstrated how one can use some elements of covariance structure. Influence of small perturbation of these elements on the posterior normal curvature is also studied. To illustrate the application of such …
Using Fuzzy Linear Regression To Estimate Relationship Between Forest Fires And Meteorological Conditions, Hande G. Akdemir, Fatma Tiryaki
Using Fuzzy Linear Regression To Estimate Relationship Between Forest Fires And Meteorological Conditions, Hande G. Akdemir, Fatma Tiryaki
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Each year, millions of hectares of forest land are destroyed by fires causing great financial loss and ecological damage. In this paper, our aim is to study the effect of the variation of meteorological conditions on the total burned area in hectares, by using fuzzy linear regression analysis based on Tanaka’s approaches. The total burned area is considered a dependent variable. Air temperature (in ºC), relative humidity (in %), wind speed (in km/h) and rainfall (in mm/m2 ) are considered to be independent variables. The relationship between input and output data is estimated using data provided in data mining …

The Two-Phase Arterial Blood Flow With Or Without A Catheter And In The Presence Of A Single Or Multi Stenosis, Ani E. Garcia, Daniel N. Riahi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We consider the problem of blood flow in an artery with or without a catheter and in the presence of single or multi stenosis whose shape is based on the available experimental data for the stenosis in a human’s artery. The presence of stenosis in the artery, which locally narrows portion of the artery, can be a result of fatty materials such as cholesterol in the blood. The use of catheter is important as a standard tool for diagnosis and treatment in patience whose blood flow passage in the artery is affected adversely by the presence of the stenosis within …

Numerical Solution Of Fuzzy Arbitrary Order Predator-Prey Equations, Smita Tapaswini, S. Chakraverty
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper seeks to investigate the numerical solution of fuzzy arbitrary order predator-prey equations using the Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM). Fuzziness in the initial conditions is taken to mean convex normalised fuzzy sets viz. triangular fuzzy number. Comparisons are made between crisp solution given by others and fuzzy solution in special cases. The results obtained are depicted in plots and tables to demonstrate the efficacy and powerfulness of the methodology.

A Note On The Qualitative Behavior Of Some Second Order Nonlinear Equation, Juan E. Nápoles Valdes
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we present two qualitative results concerning the solutions of some second order nonlinear equations, under suitable assumptions. The first result centers on the boundedness of the solutions while the second discusses the square integrability of the solutions. These results are obtained by extending and improving the current literature through sound mathematical analysis.

Forensic Investigation Of Mysql Database Management System, Andrew C. Lawrence
Forensic Investigation Of Mysql Database Management System, Andrew C. Lawrence
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
For various reasons, circumstances might arise in which an investigator, enlisting the help of a system administrator, needs access to an instance of MySQL that is password protected by an individual system user. If this password is unknown and the user is uncooperative or unavailable, alternative means must be utilized to gain access to the data stored within the program. Two main approaches will be explored, each with its pros and cons. In one case, the password can be bypassed entirely, granting the investigator unfettered access to the program data. The second method allows a narrower look at only some …
Instability Indices For Matrix Polynomials, Todd Kapitula, Elizabeth Hibma, Hwa Pyeong Kim, Jonathan Timkovich
Instability Indices For Matrix Polynomials, Todd Kapitula, Elizabeth Hibma, Hwa Pyeong Kim, Jonathan Timkovich
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
There is a well-established instability index theory for linear and quadratic matrix polynomials for which the coefficient matrices are Hermitian and skew-Hermitian. This theory relates the number of negative directions for the matrix coefficients which are Hermitian to the total number of unstable eigenvalues for the polynomial. Herein we extend the theory to *-even matrix polynomials of any finite degree. In particular, unlike previously known cases we show that the instability index depends upon the size of the matrices when the degree of the polynomial is greater than two. We also consider Hermitian matrix polynomials, and derive an index which …
