Homogeneous Connectivity Of Potential Energy Network In A Solidlike State Of Water Cluster, Takuma Akimoto, Toshihiro Kaneko, Kenji Yasuoka, Xiao Cheng Zeng Jan 2013

Homogeneous Connectivity Of Potential Energy Network In A Solidlike State Of Water Cluster, Takuma Akimoto, Toshihiro Kaneko, Kenji Yasuoka, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

A novel route to the exponential trapping-time distribution within a solidlike state in water clusters is described. We propose a simple homogeneous network (SHN) model to investigate dynamics on the potential energy networks of water clusters. In this model, it is shown that the trappingtime distribution in a solidlike state follows the exponential distribution, whereas the trapping-time distribution in local potential minima within the solidlike state is not exponential. To confirm the exponential trapping-time distribution in a solidlike state, we investigate water clusters, (H2O)6 and (H2O)12, by molecular dynamics simulations. These clusters change dynamically from …

Cationic Polymers Inhibit The Conductance Of Lysenin Channels, Daniel Fologea, Eric Krueger, Steven Rossland, Sheenah Bryant, Wylie Foss Jan 2013

Cationic Polymers Inhibit The Conductance Of Lysenin Channels, Daniel Fologea, Eric Krueger, Steven Rossland, Sheenah Bryant, Wylie Foss

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The pore-forming toxin lysenin self-assembles large and stable conductance channels in natural and artificial lipidmembranes. The lysenin channels exhibit unique regulation capabilities, which open unexplored possibilities to control the transport of ions and molecules through artificial and natural lipid membranes. Our investigations demonstrate that the positively charged polymers polyethyleneimine and chitosan inhibit the conducting properties of lysenin channels inserted into planar lipid membranes. The preservation of the inhibitory effect following addition of charged polymers on either side of the supporting membrane suggests the presence of multiple binding sites within the channel’s structure and a multistep inhibition mechanism that involves binding and trapping. …

G-Frames As Special Frames, Abas Askarizadeh, Mohammad Ali Dehghan Jan 2013

G-Frames As Special Frames, Abas Askarizadeh, Mohammad Ali Dehghan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

G-frames are generalizations of ordinary frames for Hilbert spaces. In the present paper we study frames, and operators on a special separable Hilbert C^*-module, B(H,K), where H and K are Hilbert spaces, and we prove that every g-frame for H is a frame for B(H,K) and vice versa. Also, we derive some relationships between g-Riesz bases for H and Riesz bases in B(H,K). Similar results for orthogonal bases will be discussed.

Rings Over Which Every Module Has A Flat \\Delta-Cover, Pinar Aydoğdu Jan 2013

Rings Over Which Every Module Has A Flat \\Delta-Cover, Pinar Aydoğdu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let M be a module. A \delta-cover of M is an epimorphism from a module F onto M with a \delta-small kernel. A \delta-cover is said to be a flat \delta-cover in case F is a flat module. In the present paper, we investigate some properties of (flat) \delta-covers and flat modules having a projective \delta-cover. Moreover, we study rings over which every module has a flat \delta-cover and call them right generalized \delta-perfect rings. We also give some characterizations of \delta-semiperfect and \delta-perfect rings in terms of locally (finitely, quasi-, direct-) projective \delta-covers and flat \delta-covers.

Evaluating The Sustainability Of Four Organic Vegetable Production Systems, Delia W. Scott Jan 2013

Evaluating The Sustainability Of Four Organic Vegetable Production Systems, Delia W. Scott

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

A field study evaluating the sustainability of four organic vegetable production systems was conducted in Lexington, Kentucky in 2006 and 2007. The four systems included no-till, raised beds covered with biodegradable black mulch, bare ground with shallow cultivation, and bare ground with shallow cultivation and wood chip mulch. The two-year study compared yield, weed control, labor, and costs associated with each system, as well as physical, chemical, and microbiological soil characteristics. In 2006, tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were grown in the four systems, with no significant difference in yield. Summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) was grown in the …

Managing Soil Microbial Communities With Organic Amendments To Promote Soil Aggregate Formation And Plant Health, Shawn T. Lucas Jan 2013

Managing Soil Microbial Communities With Organic Amendments To Promote Soil Aggregate Formation And Plant Health, Shawn T. Lucas

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

The effects of managing soil with organic amendments were examined with respect to soil microbial community dynamics, macroaggregate formation, and plant physio-genetic responses. The objective was to examine the possibility of managing soil microbial communities via soil management, such that the microbial community would provide agronomic benefits. In part one of this research, effects of three amendments (hairy vetch residue, manure, compost) on soil chemical and microbial properties were examined relative to formation of large macroaggregates in three different soils. Vetch and manure promoted fungal proliferation (measured via two biomarkers: fatty acid methyl ester 18:2ω6c and ergosterol) and also stimulated …

Bioavailability Of Manufactured Nanomaterials In Terrestrial Ecosystems, Jonathan D. Judy Jan 2013

Bioavailability Of Manufactured Nanomaterials In Terrestrial Ecosystems, Jonathan D. Judy

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) from the rapidly increasing number of consumer products that contain MNMs are being discharged into waste streams. Increasing evidence suggests that several classes of MNMs may accumulate in sludge derived from wastewater treatment and ultimately in soil following land application as biosolids. Little research has been conducted to evaluate the impact of MNMs on terrestrial ecosystems, despite the fact that land application of biosolids from wastewater treatment will be a major pathway for the introduction of MNMs to the environment. To begin addressing this knowledge gap, we have conducted a series of experiments designed to test how …

Cross‐Campus Collaboration: A Scientometric And Network Case Study Of Publication Activity Across Two Campuses Of A Single Institution, Jeremy Birnholtz, Shion Guha, Y. Connie Yuan, Geri Gay, Caren Heller

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Team science and collaboration have become crucial to addressing key research questions confronting society. Institutions that are spread across multiple geographic locations face additional challenges. To better understand the nature of cross‐campus collaboration within a single institution and the effects of institutional efforts to spark collaboration, we conducted a case study of collaboration at Cornell University using scientometric and network analyses. Results suggest that cross‐campus collaboration is increasingly common, but is accounted for primarily by a relatively small number of departments and individual researchers. Specific researchers involved in many collaborative projects are identified, and their unique characteristics are described. Institutional …

Particle Trajectories In Extreme Stokes Waves Over Inifinte Depth, Tony Lyons Jan 2013

Particle Trajectories In Extreme Stokes Waves Over Inifinte Depth, Tony Lyons

Articles

We investigate the velocity field of fluid particles in an extreme water wave over infinite depth. It is shown that the trajectories of the particles within the fluid and along the free surface do not form closed paths over the course of one period, but rather undergo a positive drift in the direction of wave propagation. In addition it is shown that the wave crest cannot form a stagnation point despite the velocity of the fluid being zero there.

Regret Based Robust Solutions For Uncertain Markov Decision Processes, Asrar Ahmed, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Yossiri Adulyasak, Patrick Jaillet Jan 2013

Regret Based Robust Solutions For Uncertain Markov Decision Processes, Asrar Ahmed, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Yossiri Adulyasak, Patrick Jaillet

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we seek robust policies for uncertain Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). Most robust optimization approaches for these problems have focussed on the computation of maximin policies which maximize the value corresponding to the worst realization of the uncertainty. Recent work has proposed minimax regret as a suitable alternative to the maximin objective for robust optimization. However, existing algorithms for handling minimax regret are restricted to models with uncertainty over rewards only. We provide algorithms that employ sampling to improve across multiple dimensions: (a) Handle uncertainties over both transition and reward models; (b) Dependence of model uncertainties across state, …

Detection Of Microorganisms Using Maldi And Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry, Juaneka Monet Hayes Jan 2013

Detection Of Microorganisms Using Maldi And Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry, Juaneka Monet Hayes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Matrix-assisted laser ablation desorption ionization MALDI and ion mobility (IM) MALDI mass spectrometry (MS) were used for the detection and identification of microorganisms. MALDI MS is an analytical tool that separates ions by their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and is routinely used for bioanalysis because of its sensitivity, selectivity, general applicability, and tolerance to impurities. Ion mobility is a gas phase technique that separates ions based on their charge and collision cross-section. In this research, MALDI-TOF MS and MALDI-IM-TOF MS analysis were conducted in parallel to assess the effectiveness of MALDI-IM-TOF MS for microorganism identification. Whole cell bacteria Escherichia coli strain …

Numerical Investigations Of Holstein Phonons On The Periodic Anderson Model, Peng Zhang Jan 2013

Numerical Investigations Of Holstein Phonons On The Periodic Anderson Model, Peng Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In condensed matter physics, the idea of localized magnetic moments and the scattering of conduction electrons by those local moments are of central importance not only for explaining the transport of electrons at low temperature region but also for developing the related models and theories to extend our understanding of novel physics like non-conventional superconductor, quantum phase transition and non-Fermi liquid behavior. In the first chapter of this work, I will look back at the discovery of Kondo scattering, the introduction of Anderson impurity scenario, the extension to lattice version of the Anderson impurities, the periodic Anderson model, and how …

Magnetic Deflections Of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays From Centaurus A, Azadeh Keivani Jan 2013

Magnetic Deflections Of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays From Centaurus A, Azadeh Keivani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The origin and mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are among the mysteries of particle astrophysics. Since UHECRs are mostly or entirely charged particles, they will be deflected in cosmic magnetic fields on their way to Earth. UHECR deflections in the Galactic magnetic fields (GMF) should be considered to identify their origin and nature.

The calculated Galactic magnetic deflections of UHECRs from a source strongly depend on the GMF model. I use the recent GMF model of Jansson and Farrar (JF12), a 35-parameter model which includes coherent, striated and random components and is constrained by WMAP7 Galactic synchrotron …

Photometric Variability Of X-Ray Sources In The Galactic Bulge, Christopher Tillman Britt Jan 2013

Photometric Variability Of X-Ray Sources In The Galactic Bulge, Christopher Tillman Britt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS) undertakes to find and classify X-ray sources in the Galactic Bulge. Of these X-ray sources, there is likely a significant minority which are Low Mass X-ray Binaries: systems containing either a neutron star or black hole that is accreting matter from a roughly stellar mass companion via Roche-Lobe overflow. I use optical time-series photometry from the Mosaic-II instrument on the Blanco 4m telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory to identify counterparts to new X-ray sources in the GBS. Of those that are variable in brightness, I use the morphology of the changes and …

Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Interactions With Chitin In Response To Environmental Factors, Vanessa Molina Jan 2013

Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Interactions With Chitin In Response To Environmental Factors, Vanessa Molina

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a naturally occurring chitinoclastic human pathogen that adsorbs to substrates, including chitinous copepods and oysters, as part of its ecology, a phenomenon that is important in its responses to changes in environmental factors such as temperature and salinity. Little is known about acute responses of V. parahaemolyticus when subjected to abrupt environmental changes such as those encountered during postharvest oyster treatments such as icing, exposure to mammalian host conditions, and transport via ballast water. The following in vitro studies investigated V. parahaemolyticus adsorption and gene expression as a function of substrate, temperature, and salinity as a model …

Picturing Electron Capture To The Continuum In The Transfer Ionization Of Intermediate-Energy He²⁺ Collisions With Argon, Ruitian Zhang, Xinwen Ma, Shaofeng Zhang, Xiaolong Zhu, Susmitha Akula, Don H. Madison, Bingsheng Li, Dongbin Qian, Wentian Feng, Dalong Guo, Huiping Liu, Shuncheng Yan, Pengju Zhang, Shenyue Xu, Ximeng Chen

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electron emission occurring in transfer ionization for He2+ collisions with argon has been investigated using cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy. The double differential cross sections for electron capture to the continuum of the projectile (cusp-shaped electrons) are presented for collision energies from 17.5 to 75 keV/u. For an energy of 30 keV/u, we find a maximum in the experimental ratio of the cusp-shaped electron yield to the total electron yield. This result is explained in terms of the velocity matching between the projectile ion and the electron initially bound to the target. One of the important issues for …

Creating Scalable Location-Based Games: Lessons From Geocaching, Carman Neustaedter, Anthony Tang, Tejinder K. Judge Jan 2013

Creating Scalable Location-Based Games: Lessons From Geocaching, Carman Neustaedter, Anthony Tang, Tejinder K. Judge

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Location-based games seek to move computer gaming out from behind the PC and into the “real world” of cities, streets, parks, and other locations. This real-world physicality makes the experience fun for game players, yet it brings the unique challenge of creating and orchestrating such a game. That is, location-based games are often difficult to create, grow, and maintain over long periods of time. Our research investigates how location-based games can be designed to overcome this challenge of scalability. We studied the well-established location-based game of Geocaching through active participation and an online survey to better understand how it has …

Quantum Simulations On Square And Triangular Hubbard Models, Kuang-Shing Chen Jan 2013

Quantum Simulations On Square And Triangular Hubbard Models, Kuang-Shing Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis we try to understand the unconventional superconducting mechanism on cuprates and organic superconductors (or sodium cobaltates) which can be modeled by a two-dimensional square- and triangular-lattice Hubbard model respectively. The formation of the superconducting dome requires explanations of feasible scenarios. Generally speaking, pairing strength is provided by magnetic fl_x001D_uctuations in the strongly correlated region and the structure of the Fermi surface in this region will favor superconducting pairings with a certain type of symmetry. For the cuprate physics, a superconducting dome composed of d-wave pairings has been identified experimentally. We study the Hubbard model on square lattices …

Program Analysis : Termination Proofs For Linear Simple Loops, Hongyi Chen Jan 2013

Program Analysis : Termination Proofs For Linear Simple Loops, Hongyi Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Termination proof synthesis for simple loops, i.e., loops with only conjoined constraints in the loop guard and variable updates in the loop body, is the building block of termination analysis, as well as liveness analysis, for large complex imperative systems. In particular, we consider a subclass of simple loops which contain only linear constraints in the loop guard and linear updates in the loop body. We call them Linear Simple Loops (LSLs). LSLs are particularly interesting because most loops in practice are indeed linear; more importantly, since we allow the update statements to handle nondeterminism, LSLs are expressive enough to …

Extra Structures On Three-Dimensional Cobordisms, Xuanye Wang Jan 2013

Extra Structures On Three-Dimensional Cobordisms, Xuanye Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT) is a functor from a cobordism category to the category of vector spaces, satisfying certain properties. An important property is that the vector spaces should be finite dimensional. For the WRT TQFT, the relevant 2 + 1-cobordism category is built from manifolds which are equipped with an extra structure such as a p1-structure, or an extended manifold structure. In chapter 1, we perform the universal construction of [3] on a cobordism category without this extra structure and show that the resulting quantization functor assigns an infinite dimensional vector space to the torus. In chapter …

Synthesis Of Orthogonally Protected Azalanthionines (Lanazanines) By Sequential Ring-Opening Of N-Substituted Aziridine 2-Carboxylates, Keith O'Brien, Keith Ó Proinsias, Fintan Kelleher Jan 2013

Synthesis Of Orthogonally Protected Azalanthionines (Lanazanines) By Sequential Ring-Opening Of N-Substituted Aziridine 2-Carboxylates, Keith O'Brien, Keith Ó Proinsias, Fintan Kelleher

Articles

Orthogonally protected azalanthionines (lanazanines, 4-azadiaminopimelic acids or b-aminoalaninoalanines) have been synthesised in good yields by the ring-opening of N-protected aziridine 2-carboxylates with suitably protected diaminopropanoic acids (DAPs). The required DAPs were also synthesised by ring-opening of N-protected aziridine 2-carboxylates with para-methoxybenzylamine.

Search For Gravitational Waves From Binary Black Hole Inspiral, Merger, And Ringdown In Ligo-Virgo Data From 2009-2010, J. Aasi, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report a search for gravitational waves from the inspiral, merger and ringdown of binary black holes (BBH) with total mass between 25 and 100 solar masses, in data taken at the LIGO and Virgo observatories between July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010. The maximum sensitive distance of the detectors over this period for a (20,20)M coalescence was 300 Mpc. No gravitational wave signals were found. We thus report upper limits on the astrophysical coalescence rates of BBH as a function of the component masses for nonspinning components, and also evaluate the dependence of the search sensitivity on …

Drift Detection Using Uncertainty Distribution Divergence, Patrick Lindstrom, Brian Mac Namee, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2013

Drift Detection Using Uncertainty Distribution Divergence, Patrick Lindstrom, Brian Mac Namee, Sarah Jane Delany

Articles

Data generated from naturally occurring processes tends to be non-stationary. For example, seasonal and gradual changes in climate data and sudden changes in financial data. In machine learning the degradation in classifier performance due to such changes in the data is known as concept drift and there are many approaches to detecting and handling it.

Most approaches to detecting concept drift, however, make the assumption that true classes for test examples will be available at no cost shortly after classification and base the detection of concept drift on measures relying on these labels. The high labelling cost in many domains …

Structure Borne Noise Analysis Using Helmholtz Equation Least Squares Based Forced Vibro Acoustic Components, Logesh Kumar Natarajan Jan 2013

Structure Borne Noise Analysis Using Helmholtz Equation Least Squares Based Forced Vibro Acoustic Components, Logesh Kumar Natarajan

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation presents a structure-borne noise analysis technology that is focused on providing a cost-effective noise reduction strategy. Structure-borne sound is generated or transmitted through structural vibration; however, only a small portion of the vibration can effectively produce sound and radiate it to the far-field. Therefore, cost-effective noise reduction is reliant on identifying and suppressing the critical vibration components that are directly responsible for an undesired sound. However, current technologies cannot successfully identify these critical vibration components from the point of view of direct contribution to sound radiation and hence cannot guarantee the best cost-effective noise reduction.

The technology developed …

Comparative Power Of The Anova, Randomization Anova, And Kruskal-Wallis Test, Jamie Gleason Jan 2013

Comparative Power Of The Anova, Randomization Anova, And Kruskal-Wallis Test, Jamie Gleason

Wayne State University Dissertations

The t test has been suggested to be robust to departures from normality as long as group sizes are equal and samples approach 30 or more. The F statistic has also been proposed to have the same robust qualities as the t, though researchers have suggested that because a test is robust to departures from normality, that does not necessarily make it the best test for every situation. With the increase in computing capabilities, the permutation ANOVA has been explored as an alternative to the ANOVA under non-normal conditions to rehabilitate the loss of statistical power. Since the permutation ANOVA …
