Pollution by metals has been of increasing concern for a number of decades but at present, the mechanism of metal accumulation in sentinel species is not fully understood and further studies are required for environmental risk assessment of metals in aquatic environments. The use of caging techniques has proven to be useful for assessment of water quality in coastal and estuarine environments. This study investigates the application of caging techniques for monitoring uptake of 20 elements in three marine species namely Nucella lapillus, Mytilus edulis and Crassostrea gigas. Stable isotopes were used to determine predatory effects and also used for …
How Ideas Grow: Critical Mass In The Linear Threshold Model, Hossein Alidaee
How Ideas Grow: Critical Mass In The Linear Threshold Model, Hossein Alidaee
Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects
We study how ideas spread through a social network using the Linear Threshold Model. Each node i on the complete graph Kn is given a threshold Ɵi chosen uniformly at random from (0, 1]. This threshold indicates the fraction of the social network that must be active (or believe the idea) prior to node i becoming active. We start with an activated group of early adopters, called the seed set. Considering various scenarios, we use the probabilistic method to find lower bounds on size of a seed set which guarantees that all nodes become active with high …
Clustering Methods And Their Applications To Adolescent Healthcare Data, Morgan Mayer-Jochimsen
Clustering Methods And Their Applications To Adolescent Healthcare Data, Morgan Mayer-Jochimsen
Scripps Senior Theses
Clustering is a mathematical method of data analysis which identifies trends in data by efficiently separating data into a specified number of clusters so is incredibly useful and widely applicable for questions of interrelatedness of data. Two methods of clustering are considered here. K-means clustering defines clusters in relation to the centroid, or center, of a cluster. Spectral clustering establishes connections between all of the data points to be clustered, then eliminates those connections that link dissimilar points. This is represented as an eigenvector problem where the solution is given by the eigenvectors of the Normalized Graph Laplacian. Spectral clustering …
Factoring The Duplication Map On Elliptic Curves For Use In Rank Computations, Tracy Layden
Factoring The Duplication Map On Elliptic Curves For Use In Rank Computations, Tracy Layden
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis examines the rank of elliptic curves. We first examine the correspondences between projective space and affine space, and use the projective point at infinity to establish the group law on elliptic curves. We prove a section of Mordell’s Theorem to establish that the abelian group of rational points on an elliptic curve is finitely generated. We then use homomorphisms established in our proof to find a formula for the rank, and then provide examples of computations.

Point–Counterpoint: Can Anything Be Learned From Surveys On The Interpretations Of Quantum Mechanics?, Matthew S. Leifer, Nathan Harshman
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
"In what follows, Matt Leifer and Nathan Harshman present opposing views on the value of surveys on foundational attitudes towards quantum mechanics. Three such surveys were recently published and their results are summarized in Table 1. Matt takes the `point,’ arguing that such surveys are not useful, while Nathan takes the `counterpoint.’ A complete set of references for both is given at the end."

Decomposition Of Ireland’S Carbon Emissions From 1990-2010: An Extended Kaya Identity, Tadhg O'Mahony
Articles
In recent decades, Ireland has been an important example of a development pathway where rapid economic growth was accompanied by rising energy demand and increasing carbon emissions. Understanding the driving forces of carbon emissions is necessary for policy formulation and decomposition analysis is widely used for this purpose. This study uses an extended Kaya identity as the scheme and applies the log mean Divisia index (LMDI I) as the decomposition technique. Change in carbon emissions is decomposed from 1990 – 2010 and includes a measure of the effect of renewable energy penetration. Results illustrate that scale effects of affluence and …

There is a cultural perception that the onus of responsibility for shark conservation falls on the shoulders of environmental and scientific communities’ leaders. Given the diminutive size of these two communities when compared to the vastness of American society, responsibilities should be shared by leaders of educational organizations who can communicate with greater populations. The general public must be encouraged to act pro-environmentally for effective shark conservation to ever take place in the world.
Elementary College Geometry, Henry Africk
Elementary College Geometry, Henry Africk
Open Educational Resources
This text is intended for a brief introductory course in plane geometry. It covers the topics from elementary geometry that are most likely to be required for more advanced mathematics courses. The only prerequisite is a semester of algebra.
The emphasis is on applying basic geometric principles to the numerical solution of problems. For this purpose the number of theorems and definitions is kept small. Proofs are short and intuitive, mostly in the style of those found in a typical trigonometry or precalculus text. There is little attempt to teach theorem-proving or formal methods of reasoning. However the topics are …

Let w and \omega be two weight functions on R^{2d} and 1 \leq p,q \leq \infty. Also let M(p,q,\omega) (R^d) denote the subspace of tempered distributions S' (R^d) consisting of f \in S' (R^d) such that the Gabor transform V_g f of f is in the weighted Lorentz space L(p,q,\omega d\mu) (R^{2d}) . In the present paper we define a space Q_{g,w}^{M(p,q,\omega) (R^d) as counter image of M(p,q,\omega) (R^d) under Toeplitz operator with symbol w. We show that Q_{g,w}^{M(p,q,\omega)}(R^d) is a generalization of usual Sobolev-Shubin space Q_s (R^d). We also investigate the boundedness and Schatten-class properties of Toeplitz operators.

Carbon Monoxide Adsorption On Platinum-Osmium And Platinum-Ruthenium-Osmium Mixed Nanoparticles, N. Dimakis, Nestor E. Navarro, Eugene S. Smotkin
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Density functional calculations (DFT) on carbon monoxide (CO) adsorbed on platinum, platinum-osmium, and platinum-ruthenium-osmium nanoclusters are used to elucidate changes on the adsorbate internal bond and the carbon-metal bond, as platinum is alloyed with osmium and ruthenium atoms. The relative strengths of the adsorbate internal bond and the carbon-metal bond upon alloying, which are related to the DFT calculated C–O and C–Pt stretching frequencies, respectively, cannot be explained by the traditional 5σ-donation/2π*-back-donation theoretical model. Using a modified π-attraction σ-repulsion mechanism, we ascribe the strength of the CO adsorbate internal bond to changes in the polarization of the adsorbate-substrate hybrid orbitals …

Investigations Of The Life Cycle Of The Peritrich Ciliate Zoothamnium Intermedium In Chesapeake Bay, Sikai Peng
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Epibiosis is a common phenomenon in aquatic environments. The chitinous exoskeletons of crustaceans provide stable surfaces for attachment and growth of epibiotic microorganisms. Epibiont ciliate colonization on copepods is commonly recorded but has rarely been studied in Chesapeake Bay; also, little is known about the life cycles of epibiont ciliates in the bay.
The present work focuses on the life cycle of Zoothamnium intermedium in Chesapeake Bay. A peritrich ciliate belonging to the genus Zoothamnium was found as an epibiont on the calanoid copepods Acartia tonsa and Pseudodiaptomus pelagicus during the summer in the York River, a tributary of the …
The Development Of Ecological Functions In Created Forested Wetlands, Sean P. Charles
The Development Of Ecological Functions In Created Forested Wetlands, Sean P. Charles
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Wetland mitigation has become a 2.4 billion dollar per year industry in the U.S. and in Virginia it leads to the replacement of 77 ha of palustrine forested wetlands (PFWs) per year with mitigation wetlands, including created forested wetlands (CFWs). Mitigation hinges on the idea that compensation wetlands lead to “no net loss of wetland function” when compared to impacted wetlands. We assessed the functions of provision of habitat and biogeochemical functions associated with production of biomass, the retention and removal of nutrients and the accumulation of soil C over 8 years in seven CFWs of approximately 11 and 20 …

Laughing At The Looking Glass: Does Humor Style Serve As An Interpersonal Signal?, Virgil Zeigler-Hill, Avi Besser, Stephanie E. Jett
Faculty Publications
Objective: The provision of information appears to be an important feature of humor. The present studies examined whether humor serves as an interpersonal signal such that an individual's style of humor is associated with how the individual is perceived by others. Method: We examined this issue across two studies. In Study 1, undergraduate participants (257 targets) were rated more positively by their friends and family members (1194 perceivers) when they possessed more benign humor styles. In Study 2, 1190 community participants rated the romantic desirability of targets ostensibly possessing different humor styles. Results: Across both studies, our results were consistent …

Results from an interannually forced, 0.08 degrees eddy-resolving simulation based on the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model, in conjunction with a small but well-determined transport database, are used to investigate the currents and transports associated with the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) in the subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA). The model results yield a consistent warming in the western SPNA since the early 1990s, along with mean transports similar to those observed for the trans-basin AMOC across the World Ocean Circulation Experiment hydrographic section AR19 (16.4 Sv) and boundary currents at the exit of the Labrador Sea near 53 degrees N (39.0 …
Isoclinic Extensions Of Lie Algebras, Hamid Mohammadzadeh, Ali Reza Salemkar, Zahra Riyahi
Isoclinic Extensions Of Lie Algebras, Hamid Mohammadzadeh, Ali Reza Salemkar, Zahra Riyahi
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this article we introduce the notion of the equivalence relation, isoclinism, on the central extensions of Lie algebras, and determine all central extensions occurring in an isoclinism class of a given central extension. We also show that under some conditions, the concepts of isoclinism and isomorphism between the central extensions of finite dimensional Lie algebras are identical. Finally, the connection between isoclinic extensions and the Schur multiplier of Lie algebras are discussed.

In the southwestern Amazon lies the Sierra del Divisor, an isolated cluster of mist-covered peaks and ridges rising out of the steamy lowland rainforest. The forests of these fiercely dissected crests and valleys still ring with the low grunt of jaguar and the thunderous clacks of hundreds-strong herds of whitelipped peccaries, while the canopy sways with troops of the rare red Uakari monkey. This biodiversity inspired the Serra do Divisor National Park, and its transboundary sister reserve, but these forests are also home to humans: the descendants of Asheninka warriors and rubber tappers, a re-emergent Nawa people, I and most …

Effect Of The Strengthened Western Pacific Subtropical High On Summer Visibility Decrease Over Eastern China Since 1973, Wenjun Qu, Jun Wang, Shanhong Gao, Tongwen Wu
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Daily visibility (Vis) data from 354 meteorological stations are used to evaluate the seasonal Vis trends over China from 1973 to 2009, which show that Vis decline is most distinct over eastern China in summer, with a trend of -1.4 km per decade or -34% in the 37 years. This rapid decline of summertime Vis is found to be partially associated with the intensification and westward extension of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) that has occurred in recent years. Such a change in the strength and breadth of WPSH has resulted in more days with stable, hot, and humid …
Nim On Groups, Marie Meyer
Nim On Groups, Marie Meyer
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
The traditional game of Nim comprises of two players who take turns removing objects from distinct piles. The player who takes the last object is the winner. We consider the game Nim on Cayley graphs of finite groups, where the piles are located on the vertices and the number of objects in each pile is denoted as the weight of the vertex. In this version of the game, a player wins by trapping the opponent on a vertex with weight zero so he or she is unable to further reduce the weight of that vertex. We examine winning strategies for …

Factors Influencing The Establishment And Survival Of Native Hardwood Tree Seedlings Of The Kentucky Inner Bluegrass Blue Ash-Oak Savanna-Woodland, James D. Shaffer
Theses and Dissertations--Biology
Historically, the Kentucky Inner Bluegrass blue ash-oak savanna-woodland was the primary ecosystem of the Inner Bluegrass Region (IBR) of Kentucky. After European settlement, the majority (>99%) of Bluegrass savanna was converted to agricultural and urban land uses. Currently remnant savanna tree species are failing to recruit. Therefore, a long-term restoration ecology project researching competition and disturbance on seedling establishment, survival, and growth has been established at Griffith Woods (the largest remaining savanna in Kentucky) in Harrison Co., KY. Fourteen native hardwood tree species (a total of 6,168 seedlings) have been experimentally planted. Light, soil, surrounding vegetation, and herbivory, factors …

Pine Creek Conservation Area (PCCA), just northeast of the John Day River in Wheeler County, Oregon, was acquired in 1999-2001 by the Confederate Tribes of Warm Springs with support from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), to mitigate for wildlife losses created by the large, hydropower Columbia River Dams, particularly the Bonneville, Dalles and John Day Dams. Many thousands of acres of grassland, shrub steppe and riparian habitats were lost due to inundation, and the objectives of the acquisition included restoration of similar habitats. As part of an interagency agreement created in 2002, the Oregon Natural Heritage Information Center established a …

Institute for Natural Resources Publications
In July 2012, we sampled 131 plots in wet meadow habitat at the southern end of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Analysis of the data identified eleven different plant associations: Alopecurus pratensis, Carex aquatilis var. aquatilis, Carex nebrascensis, Carex pellita, Carex praegracilis, Carex sheldonii, Distichlis spicata, Juncus balticus, Leymus triticoides, Phalaris arundinacea, and Sparganium eurycarpum. Plant associations spanned a wetland gradient from seasonally moist to seasonally or perennially flooded, but surface water had left most stands at time of sampling. Mean Wetland Indicator Status scores help to place the plant associations within gradients in soil moisture and alkalinity. The Alopecurus …

Analysis Of Polyethylene Glycol In The Α-Hemolysin Nanopore, David M. Dancho
Theses and Dissertations
Nanopores have been shown to be a useful analytical tool for single molecule detection. They have been used to study the composition of DNA and other molecules of interest. These pores are usually α-hemolysin which is a toxin from Staphylococcus aureus or more recently nanoscale synthetic solid state pores. Now we are beginning to look at other molecules or proteins by sending them into the nanopores and measuring a characteristic partial current blockade. In this thesis we look at polyethylene glycol (PEG) as it enters and blocks current through a single alpha hemolysin pore. We report the effects of ionic …
