Neuroevolution And An Application Of An Agent Based Model For Financial Market, Anil Yaman Jan 2014

Neuroevolution And An Application Of An Agent Based Model For Financial Market, Anil Yaman

Dissertations and Theses

Market prediction is one of the most difficult problems for the machine learning community. Even though, successful trading strategies can be found for the training data using various optimization methods, these strategies usually do not perform well on the test data as expected. Therefore, selection of the correct strategy becomes problematic. In this study, we propose an evolutionary algorithm that produces a variation of trader agents ensuring that the trading strategies they use are different. We discuss that because the selection of the correct strategy is difficult, a variety of agents can be used simultaneously in order to reduce risk. …

Land cover changes (LCCs) play an important role in the climate system. Research over recent decades highlights the impacts of these changes on atmospheric temperature, humidity, cloud cover, circulation, and precipitation. These impacts range from the local- and regional-scale to sub-continental and global-scale. It has been found that the impacts of regional-scale LCC in one area may also be manifested in other parts of the world as a climatic teleconnection. In light of these findings, this article provides an overview and synthesis of some of the most notable types of LCC and their impacts on climate. These LCC types include …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In the present study, the abdominal contents of 10 mummies from beneath the Dominican Church of the Holy Spirit in Vilnius, Lithuania, were examined for the presence of helminth parasites using standard archaeoparasitological techniques. Of the mummies examined, only one individual presented with evidence of parasitism. This individual was infected with both Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides (5,222 parasite eggs/gram). The conditions of many of the T. trichiura eggs suggest that a fortuitously embedded female whipworm decomposed within the individual’s gut to release the eggs, as opposed to the eggs actually being passed by the adult helminth. This study highlights …

Robust And Adaptive Nonlinear Control Of Limit Cycle Oscillations In Uavs Using Synthetic Jet Actuators, Natalie Ramos Pedroza Jan 2014

Robust And Adaptive Nonlinear Control Of Limit Cycle Oscillations In Uavs Using Synthetic Jet Actuators, Natalie Ramos Pedroza

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Limit cycle oscillations (LCO), also known as utter, cause significant challenges in fight control of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and could potentially lead to structural damage and catastrophic failures. LCO can be described as vibrational motions in the pitching and plunging displacements of an aircraft wing. Even in low Reynolds number (low-Re) fight regimes, LCO can exceed the limiting boundary for safe UAV fight. Further, as practical considerations motivate the design of smaller, lighter weight UAVs, there is a growing need for UAV systems that do not require heavy mechanical actuators (e.g., ailerons). To address this, the use of synthetic …

Oscillation Of Second Order Differential Equations With Mixed Nonlinearities, Zhiting Xu, Aijun Cheng

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

By refining the standard integral averaging technique, in this paper, new oscillation criteria as well as interval oscillation criteria are established for the second order delay differential equation with mixed nonlinearities \begin{equation*} (r(t) x^{\prime}(t) ^{\alpha-1}x^{\prime}(t))^{\prime}+q_0(t) x(\tau_0(t)) ^{\alpha-1}x(\tau_0(t)) +\sum\limits_{i = 1}^nq_i(t) x(\tau_i(t)) ^{\alpha_i-1}x(\tau_i(t)) = 0, \end{equation*} where \alpha>0, \alpha_i>0, i = 1,2,\cdots,n. Our results generalize and improve the known results in the literature. Examples are also given to illustrate the importance of our results.

Evidence That Photons Have Extension In Space, Randy Wayne Jan 2014

Evidence That Photons Have Extension In Space, Randy Wayne

Turkish Journal of Physics

Satyendra Nath Bose realized that there was a logical inconsistency in the derivation of Planck's radiation law since the derivation used to obtain the temperature-independent prefactor in the blackbody radiation law had been based in part on classical wave hypotheses, such as the number of degrees of freedom of the ether. Bose worked out a strictly quantum derivation by combining the quantum hypothesis with statistical mechanics to determine the number of states of each mode that would occupy a 6-dimensional phase space. Here I use the model of an extended photon to show that the temperature-independent prefactor of Planck's radiation …

Uv-Vis And Xrd Investigation Of Graphite-Doped Poly(Acrylic) Acid Membranes, Mihai Todica, Traian Stefan, Simion Simon, Istvan Balasz, Liviu Daraban

Turkish Journal of Physics

Possible modification of the structure of poly(acrylic) acid (PAA) membranes doped with graphite was investigated by UV-Vis and XRD techniques. The pure PAA membranes were characterized by good transparency in the domain 250-700 nm, with maximum absorption at 207 nm. The absorbance of membranes increased significantly after doping with graphite. The XRD patterns of pure membranes showed a low degree of order of the polymeric matrix. Some modifications of the parameters of the ordered domains of the polymer and of the graphite appeared at high concentrations of the dopant.

Location, Location: Factors Influencing Greenhouse Gas Fluxes From The Mississippi Delta Agricultural Region, Michael P. Keating

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes from agricultural landscapes may contribute significantly to regional greenhouse gas budgets due to stimulation of soil microbial activity through fertilizer application. Few studies have made measurements of CH4, N2O, and CO2 from the dominant landscape features of the agricultural landscape: farmland, riparian zone, and wetland habitat. This study assessed gas emission variability from the Mississippi Delta agricultural landscape and explored the effects of hydrology and hydrophytic vegetation on gas emissions.

Gas collection chambers were utilized to make gas measurements from soybean and corn farmland, vegetated riparian buffer, and two vegetated …

Fluctuations In Resistivity In The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, Southwest Mississippi And Southeast Louisiana, Thomas Hetherington Story Jan 2014

Fluctuations In Resistivity In The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, Southwest Mississippi And Southeast Louisiana, Thomas Hetherington Story

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale in southwest Mississippi and Southeast Louisiana's Florida Parishes has become an unconventional target for the exploration and production of oil. Spurred by early estimates of over 7 billion barrels of oil in place, the target region for this production is the basal portion of the shale where a continuous increase in resistivity greater than 5 Ohmm can be observed. This increase was originally attributed solely to the generation of hydrocarbons from the organic matter contained within the shale, with the presence of the oil and gas impeding the flow of electrons through what would normally be …

Hard Chromium Electrodeposition From A Trivalent Chromium Bath Containing Water-Soluble Polymer, Vyacheslav Protsenko, Viktor Gordiienko, Tatiana Butyrina, Elena Vasileva, Felix Danilov

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The effect of polyvinylpyrrolidones (PVPs) with different molecular weights as polymeric additives to a sulfate trivalent chromium bath was ascertained. Introduction of PVPs to the plating bath was stated to result in improvement in the surface appearance of chromium deposits and stabilization of current efficiency value in long-term electrolysis. The rate of metal deposition is practically independent of the deposition time. Thus, using PVP additive allows one to obtain high-quality Cr-coatings with a thickness of several tens of micrometers. It is found by means of turbidimetric analysis that the polymer additive has an accelerating effect on the aggregation of particles …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The surface of mesocellular silica foam (MCF) was modified by grafting 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) to have a positive charge, and thus to provide sites for the immobilization of H_3PW_{12}O_{40} (PW_{12}). This modified nanosized mesoporous silica (PW_{12}-APTES@MCF) was characterized by FTIR, XRD, BET, and TEM. XRD and adsorption--desorption analysis shows that the mesostructure of silica remains intact after various modifications, while the spectral technique shows the successful grafting of the neat PW_{12} inside the porous silica support. The oxidation of alcohols occurs effectively and selectively with H_2O_2 as the oxidant. PW_{12}-APTES@MCF was used as the catalyst. The catalyst can be reused several …
