Abstract

We study the rapid outward extension of the electron radiation belt on a timescale of several hours during three events observed by Radiation Belt Storm Probes and Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms satellites and particularly quantify the contributions of substorm injections and chorus waves to the electron flux enhancement near the outer boundary of radiation belt. A comprehensive analysis including both observations and simulations is performed for the first event on 26 May 2013. The outer boundary of electron radiation belt moved from L = 5.5 to L > 6.07 over about 6 h, with up …

Scaling And Alpha-Helix Regulation Of Protein Relaxation In A Lipid Bilayer, Liming Qiu, Creighton Buie, Kwan H. Cheng, Mark W. Vaughn Dec 2014

Scaling And Alpha-Helix Regulation Of Protein Relaxation In A Lipid Bilayer, Liming Qiu, Creighton Buie, Kwan H. Cheng, Mark W. Vaughn

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

Protein conformation and orientation in the lipid membrane plays a key role in many cellular processes. Here we use molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the relaxation and C-terminus diffusion of a model helical peptide: beta-amyloid (Aβ) in a lipid membrane. We observed that after the helical peptide was initially half-embedded in the extracelluar leaflet of phosphatidylcholine (PC) or PC/cholesterol (PC/CHOL) membrane, the C-terminus diffused across the membrane and anchored to PC headgroups of the cytofacial lipid leaflet. In some cases, the membrane insertion domain of the Aβ was observed to partially unfold. Applying a sigmoidal fit to the process, we found …

Api Usage Verification Through Dataflow Analysis, Kenneth Baptiste Tapsoba Dec 2014

Api Usage Verification Through Dataflow Analysis, Kenneth Baptiste Tapsoba

Theses and Dissertations

Using APIs in a program is often difficult because of the incomplete documentation and the shortage of available examples. To cope with that, we have seen the increase of API checking tools that provide efficient suggestions for API usage. However, most of those checking tools use a pattern-based analysis to determine errors such as misuse of API calls. In this thesis, we introduce a different analysis technique that relies on explicit API state transitions for the analysis of the program. We adopt a static dataflow analysis framework from SOOT to inspect state transitions at each program point.

Long Wavelength Analysis Of A Model For The Geographic Spread Of A Disease, Layachi Hadji Dec 2014

Long Wavelength Analysis Of A Model For The Geographic Spread Of A Disease, Layachi Hadji

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We investigate the temporal and spatial evolution of the spread of an infectious disease by performing a long-wavelength analysis of a classical model for the geographic spread of a rabies epidemic in a population of foxes subject to idealized boundary conditions. We consider twodimensional and three-dimensional landscapes consisting of an infinite horizontal strip bounded by two walls a finite distance apart and a horizontal region bounded above and below by horizontal walls, respectively. A nonlinear partial differential evolution Equation for the leading order of infectives is derived. The Equation captures the space and time variations of the spread of the …

A Likelihood Ratio Test Approach To Profile Monitoring In Tourism Industry, R. Noorossana, H. Izadbakhsh, M. R. Nayebpour

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A new statistical profile monitoring technique to monitor and detect changes in logistic profiles with an application in the tourism industry is presented in this paper. In the statistical process control literature, profile is usually referred to as a relationship between a response variable and one or more explanatory variables. In the tourism case study presented in this paper, time is considered as the explanatory variable and tourism satisfaction as the response variable. The Likelihood ratio test is used as a vehicle to detect any changes in the satisfaction profile in phase II of profile monitoring. The performance of the …

The Investigation Of Surplus Of Energy And Signal Propagation At Time-Domain Waveguide Modes, Özlem Işık, Zeynep F. Koçak, Emre Eroğlu Dec 2014

The Investigation Of Surplus Of Energy And Signal Propagation At Time-Domain Waveguide Modes, Özlem Işık, Zeynep F. Koçak, Emre Eroğlu

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Classical waveguide theory has been developed bearing on Bernoulli’s product method which results in separation of space and time variables in Maxwell’s equations. The time-harmonic waveguide modes have been stated mathematically for transmitting signals along the waveguides. As a starting point, present studies on transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) waveguide modes with previous results are taken and exhibited in an advanced form. They have been obtained within the framework of an evolutionary approach to solve Maxwell’s equations with time derivative. As a result every modal field is obtained in the form of a product of vector functions of transverse coordinates …

Applying Gmdh-Type Neural Network And Particle Warm Optimization For Prediction Of Liquefaction Induced Lateral Displacements, Reza A. Jirdehi, Hamidreza T. Mamoudan, Hossein H. Sarkaleh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Lateral spreading and flow failure are amongst the most destructive effects of liquefaction. Estimation of the peril of lateral spreading requires characterization of subsurface conditions, principally soil density, fine content, groundwater conditions, site topography and seismic characteristics. In this paper a GMDH-type neural network and particle swarm optimization is developed for prediction of liquefaction induced lateral displacements. Using this method, a new model was proposed that is suitable for predicting the liquefaction induced lateral displacements. The proposed model was tested before the requested calculation. The data set which is contains 250 data points of liquefaction-induced lateral ground spreading case histories …

A Semiparametric Estimation For Regression Functions In The Partially Linear Autoregressive Time Series Model, R. Farnoosh, M. Hajebi, S. J. Mortazavi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a semiparametric method is proposed for estimating regression function in the partially linear autoregressive time series model . Here, we consider a combination of parametric forms and nonlinear functions, in which the errors are independent. Semiparametric and nonparametric curve estimation provides a useful tool for exploring and understanding the structure of a nonlinear time series data set to make for a more efficient study in the partially linear autoregressive model. The unknown parameters are estimated using the conditional nonlinear least squares method, and the nonparametric adjustment is also estimated by defining and minimizing the local L2 -fitting …

In this paper we have studied the stability of three typical species syn-ecosystem. The system comprises of one commensal S1 and two hosts S2 and S3 . Both S2 and S2 benefit S1 without getting themselves affected either positively or adversely. Further S2 is a commensal of S3 and S3 is a host of both S1 and S2. Limited resources have been considered for all the three species in this case. The model equations of the system constitute a set of three first order non-linear ordinary differential equations. …

Modern Approach For Designing And Solving Interval Estimated Linear Fractional Programming Models, S. Ananthalakshmi, C. Vijayalakshmi, V. Ganesan Dec 2014

Modern Approach For Designing And Solving Interval Estimated Linear Fractional Programming Models, S. Ananthalakshmi, C. Vijayalakshmi, V. Ganesan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Optimization methods have been widely applied in statistics. In mathematical programming, the coefficients of the models are always categorized as deterministic values. However uncertainty always exists in realistic problems. Therefore, interval-estimated optimization models may provide an alternative choice for considering the uncertainty into the optimization models. In this aspect, this paper concentrates, the lower and upper values of interval estimated linear fractional programming model (IELFPM) are obtained by using generalized confidence interval estimation method. An IELFPM is a LFP with interval form of the coefficients in the objective function and all requirements. The solution of the IELFPM is also analyzed.

Flow Dynamics Of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, C. J. Van Der Veen, L. A. Stearns, Jesse Johnson, B. Csatho Dec 2014

Flow Dynamics Of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, C. J. Van Der Veen, L. A. Stearns, Jesse Johnson, B. Csatho

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Force-balance calculations on Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, reveal large spatial variations in the along-flow component of driving stress with corresponding sticky spots that are stationary over time. On the large scale, flow resistance is partitioned between basal (80%) and lateral (20%) drag. Ice flow is due mostly to basal sliding and concentrated vertical shear in the basal ice layers, indicating the bed is at or close to the pressure-melting temperature. There is a significant component of driving stress in the across-flow direction resulting in nonzero basal drag in that direction. This is an unrealistic result and we propose that there …

Theses and Dissertations

The eruption periodicity, CO2 bubble volume fraction, eruption velocity, flash depth and mass emission of CO2 were determined from multiple wellbore CO2-driven cold-water geysers (Crystal and Tenmile geysers, in Utah and Chimayó geyser in New Mexico). Utilizing a suite of temporal water sample datasets from multiple field trips to Crystal geyser, systematic and repeated trends in effluent water chemistry have been revealed. Crystal geyser has a four part eruption cycle composed of a minor eruption period (mEP), major eruption period (MEP), aftershock eruption period (Ae) and recharge (R). Tenmile geyser has a four part eruption cycle composed of MEP, drainage …

Spatial Dimensions Of Tower Karst And Cockpit Karst: A Case Study Of Guilin, China, Wei Huang Dec 2014

Spatial Dimensions Of Tower Karst And Cockpit Karst: A Case Study Of Guilin, China, Wei Huang

Theses and Dissertations

Tower karst (fenglin) and cockpit karst (fengcong) are two globally important representative styles of tropical karst. Previously proposed sequential and parallel development models are preliminary, and geomorphological studies to date do not provide enough satisfactory evidence to delineate the spatial and temporal relation between the two landscapes. This unclear interpretation of tower-cockpit relationships not only obscures understanding of the process-form dynamics of these tropical karst landforms, but also confuses their definition. Moreover, previous technological limitations, as well as the fragmental nature of the karst landscapes, has limited incorporation of geologic and other data into broad geospatial frameworks based on geographic …

Improved Performance Of Analog And Digital Acousto-Optic Modulation With Feedback Under Profiled Beam Propagation For Secure Communication Using Chaos, Fares S. Almehmadi, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Using intensity feedback, the closed-loop behavior of an acousto-optic hybrid device under profiled beam propagation has been recently shown to exhibit wider chaotic bands potentially leading to an increase in both the dynamic range and sensitivity to key parameters that characterize the encryption. In this work, a detailed examination is carried out vis-à-vis the robustness of the encryption/decryption process relative to parameter mismatch for both analog and pulse code modulation signals, and bit error rate (BER) curves are used to examine the impact of additive white noise.

The simulations with profiled input beams are shown to produce a stronger encryption …

Wildwood/Kraemer Lake County Park Observational Study: The Effects Of Fragmentation On Old-Growth Forest Species, Rhonda H. Zimmerman Dec 2014

Wildwood/Kraemer Lake County Park Observational Study: The Effects Of Fragmentation On Old-Growth Forest Species, Rhonda H. Zimmerman

Culminating Projects in Biology

Habitat fragmentation generates forest fragments with increased ratio of "edge". This "edge effect" alters the natural community. Old growth forests support deep forest communities which rely on the closed canopy for survival, often indicators of healthy old growth communities. Putative old growth forest patches were identified in Wildwood Park and St. John’s Arboretum/University. One study objective was to collect baseline data on flora and fauna in Wildwood to confirm the presence of old-growth patches. The main ecological goal of the study was to determine if bird and plant communities exhibited patterns consistent with the operating assumption of 50 acre old-growth …

Chasing Polys: Interdisciplinary Affinity And Its Connection To Physics Identity, Tyler Scott Dec 2014

Chasing Polys: Interdisciplinary Affinity And Its Connection To Physics Identity, Tyler Scott

All Dissertations

This research is based on two motivations that merge by means of the frameworks of interdisciplinary affinity and physics identity. First, a goal of education is to develop interdisciplinary abilities in students' thinking and work. But an often ignored factor is students interests and beliefs about being interdisciplinary. Thus, this work develops and uses a framework called interdisciplinary affinity. It encompasses students interests in making connections across disciplines and their beliefs about their abilities to make those connections. The second motivation of this research is to better understand how to engage more students with physics. Physics identity describes how a …

Gender And Ethnicity Classification Using Partial Face In Biometric Applications, Jamie Lyle Dec 2014

Gender And Ethnicity Classification Using Partial Face In Biometric Applications, Jamie Lyle

All Dissertations

As the number of biometric applications increases, the use of non-ideal information such as images which are not strictly controlled, images taken covertly, or images where the main interest is partially occluded, also increases. Face images are a specific example of this. In these non-ideal instances, other information, such as gender and ethnicity, can be determined to narrow the search space and/or improve the recognition results. Some research exists for gender classification using partial-face images, but there is little research involving ethnic classifications on such images. Few datasets have had the ethnic diversity needed and sufficient subjects for each ethnicity …

Toward Understanding The Thermodynamics And Mechanisms Of Actinide Sorption Reactions, Shanna Estes Dec 2014

Toward Understanding The Thermodynamics And Mechanisms Of Actinide Sorption Reactions, Shanna Estes

All Dissertations

The environmental fate of actinides is greatly influenced by interfacial reactions, including sorption onto solid surfaces. Because changes in the primary hydration sphere of the actinide are expected to greatly influence the thermodynamics (i.e., reaction enthalpy and entropy) of these reactions, examining actinide sorption thermodynamics may provide insight into actinide sorption mechanisms. Additionally, examining actinide sorption thermodynamics may enhance the ability to model or predict these reactions in environmental or engineered systems where variable or elevated temperatures are expected. However, few researchers have studied actinide sorption thermodynamics. Therefore, this research examined the thermodynamics of Eu(III) (a trivalent actinide analog), Th(IV), …

Empowering Citizens In A Global Era: A Grounded Theory Study Of Community Gardens, Anita Tam Dec 2014

Empowering Citizens In A Global Era: A Grounded Theory Study Of Community Gardens, Anita Tam

All Dissertations

In our global era, the modern food system can be viewed as consisting of a dominant macro-level corporate food industry, challenged by broad-based meso-level food justice and democracy movements, which are in turn fueled by micro-level community food initiatives. Research has yet to examine the role of community gardens in the context of this complex, multi-level food system. Grounded theory methodology was thus used to explore the deeper meaning of the community gardening experience to participants, in order to better understand the ways in which community gardens may scale up and contribute to democratizing the food system. Analysis of the …

Design With Emotion: Improving Web Search Experience For Older Adults, Tamirat Abegaz Dec 2014

Design With Emotion: Improving Web Search Experience For Older Adults, Tamirat Abegaz

All Dissertations

Research indicates that older adults search for information all together about 15% less than younger adults prior to making decisions. Prior research findings associated such behavior mainly with age-related cognitive difficulties. However, recent studies indicate that emotion is linked to influence search decision quality. This research approaches questions about why older adults search less and how this search behavior could be improved. The research is motivated by the broader issues of older users' search behavior, while focusing on the emotional usability of search engine user interfaces. Therefore, this research attempts to accomplish the following three objectives: a) to explore the …

Efficient And Reliable Simulation, Memory Protection, And Driver Generation In Embedded Network Systems, Jiannan Zhai

All Dissertations

Embedded systems are widely used, from consumer electronics, to industrial equipment, to spacecraft. With embedded systems becoming more complex, new challenges are presented to application developers. In this dissertation, we focus on three of the most important: (i) Network simulation tools are widely used for sensor network testing and evaluation. Simulation performance affects the efficiency of the application developers who use these tools. The performance of a single host system represents a performance bottleneck for large-scale network simulation. A distributed simulator offering higher performance is needed to support fast, large-scale network simulation. (ii) Single event upsets (SEUs), which occur when …

All Dissertations

Currently our natural environment is threatened by climate change, habitat fragmentation, and other transboundary issues. To address these problems, it is thought that conservation organizations and land management agencies should attempt to manage at larger geographic scales and across political boundaries. The Crown Managers Partnership (CMP) and the Southern Appalachian Man and the Biosphere Cooperative (SAMAB) are two such organizations that work at an ecoregional scale to support collaboration among agencies, aboriginal groups, conservationists, scientists, and other stakeholders for the conservation and restoration of the Northern Rocky Mountain and the Southern Appalachian regions in North America. Over the past decades, …
