We provide an outline of a college-level lecture on systems of differential equations that is intended to offer an alternative, integrative view of the subject. Particular emphasis is placed on the fact that very elementary concepts and insights can be employed to gain access to a very wide range of important applications, including the Schr¨odinger equation, the Klein-Gordon equation, the Laplace equation, and the Poisson equation.

The 7th century Indian mathematician Bhaskara (c.600 – c.680) obtained a remarkable approximation for the sine function. Many subsequent ancient authors have given versions of this rule, but none provided a proof or described how the result was obtained. Grover [1] provides a possible explanation, but I think the rule can be explained more clearly. Rather than give the rule first, we will derive it, and then discuss its accuracy, and explore some alternative approximations. Our derivation is simply an exercise in modeling.

We give a necessary condition that a separable measurement can be implemented by local quantum operations and classical communication (LOCC) in any finite number of rounds of communication, generalizing and strengthening a result obtained previously. That earlier result involved a bound that is tight when the number of measurement operators defining the measurement is relatively small. The present results generalize that bound to one that is tight for any finite number of measurement operators, and we also provide an extension which holds when that number is infinite. Raman microspectroscopy has been investigated for some time for use in label-free cell sorting devices. These approaches require coupling of the Raman spectrometer to complex data mining algorithms for identification of cellular subtypes such as the leukocyte subpopulations of lymphocytes and monocytes. In this study, three distinct multivariate classification approaches, (PCA-LDA, SVMs and Random Forests) are developed and tested on their ability to classify the cellular subtype in extracted peripheral blood mononuclear cells (T-cell lymphocytes from myeloid cells), and are evaluated in terms of their respective classification performance. We describe a hybrid Raman-optical parametric amplifier (HROPA) operating at the O- and E-bands and designed for coarse wavelength division multiplexed (CWDM) passive optical networks (PONs). We present the mathematical model and simulation results for the optimization of this HROPA design. Our analysis shows that separating the two amplification processes allows for optimization of each one separately, e.g., proper selection of pump optical powers and wavelengths to achieve maximum gain bandwidth and low gain ripple. Furthermore, we show that the proper design of optical filters incorporated in the HROPA architecture can suppress idlers generated during the OPA process, as well …

This paper assesses the role of intra-sectoral spillovers in total factor productivity across Chinese producers in the chemical industry. We use a rich panel data-set of 12,552 firms observed over the period 2004-2006 and model output by the firm as a function of skilled and unskilled labor, capital, materials, and total factor productivity, which is broadly defined. The latter is a composite of observable factors such as export market participation, foreign as well as public ownership, the extent of accumulated intangible assets, and unobservable total factor productivity. The coastal city of Cotonou in the developing country of Bénin, West Africa, is a large population center that is facing a serious threat to the sustainability of its freshwater supply. The city relies on the Godomey aquifer for domestic water, but the aquifer is undergoing saltwater intrusion. This problem is likely to worsen without significant steps to improve management of the water supply. Aquifer continuity and saltwater flow paths are poorly understood, but that information is critical to ensure sustainable access to freshwater in this growing urban center. Stochastic compartmental (e.g., SIR) models have proven useful for studying the epidemics of childhood diseases while taking into account the variability of the epidemic dynamics. Here, we use the multi-step generalized differential transform method (MSGDTM) to approximate the numerical solution of the SIR model and numerical simulations are presented graphically.

An analysis of the heat and mass transfer effects on an unsteady flow of a micro-polar fluid over an infinite moving permeable plate in a saturated porous medium in the presence of a transverse magnetic field, radiation absorption and thermo-diffusion were studied. The governing system of partial differential equations was transformed to dimensionless equations using suitable dimensionless variables. The dimensionless equations were then solved analytically using perturbation technique to obtain the expressions for the velocity, micro-rotation, temperature and concentration. Background: The origins of life on the Earth required chemical entities to interact with their environments in ways that could respond to natural selection. The concept of interpretation, where biotic entities use signs in their environment as proxy for the existence of other items of selective value in their environment, has been proposed on theoretical grounds to be relevant to the origins and early evolution of life. However this concept has not been demonstrated empirically.

The North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative LCC (NA LCC) is a public-private partnership that provides information to support conservation decisions that may be affected by global climate change (GCC) and other threats. The NA LCC region extends from southeast Virginia to the Canadian Maritime Provinces. Within this region, the US National Climate Assessment documented increases in air temperature, total precipitation, frequency of heavy precipitation events, and rising sea level, and predicted more drastic changes. Medical diagnosis aims to identify diseased individuals through the evaluation of the measurements of some biomarkers by performing a diagnostic test based on some biomarker measurements. Biomarkers are measured on either discrete or continuous scale and continuous biomarkers are utilized more often in medical practice. This article introduces the most popular tool for evaluating continuous biomarkers: the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve.

Animals can exert a strong influence on the structure and function of foundation species such as mangroves. Because mangroves live at the interface of land and sea, both terrestrial and marine species affect them, including numerous herbivores and boring species. These organisms can affect the fecundity, performance, and morphology of mangroves. In a mangrove stand in southwestern Taiwan, we discovered that mangroves were extensively damaged by woodboring isopods Sphaeroma terebrans. We examined the relationships between burrowing damage from S. terebrans and metrics of mangrove fecundity, performance, and morphology. Cryogenic autolysis is a typical phenomenon of abnormal metabolism in Volvariella volvacea. Recent studies have identified 20 significantly upregulated genes via high-throughput sequencing of the mRNAs expressed in the mycelia of V. volvacea after cold exposure. Among these significantly upregulated genes, 15 annotated genes were used for functional annotation cluster analysis. Our results showed that the cyclin-like F-box domain (FBDC) formed the functional cluster with the lowest P-value. We also observed a significant expansion of FBDC families in V. volvacea. Among these, the FBDC3 family displayed the maximal gene expansion in V. volvacea. Gene expression profiling analysis revealed …

Glacier dynamics are inextricably linked to the basal conditions of glaciers. Seismic reflection methods can image the glacier bed under certain conditions. However, where a seismically thin layer of material is present at the bed, traditional analyses may fail to fully characterize bed properties. We use a targeted full-waveform inversion algorithm to quantify the basal-layer parameters of a mountain glacier: thickness (d), P-wave velocity (α) and density (ρ). In this paper, we deal with the existence of a positive solution for 2nd and 3rd order boundary value problem by first defining their respective Green’s function. The Green’s function is used to derive the Green’s function for the 2nth and 3nth order boundary value problem, respectively, where n is a positive integer. The paper presents a new analytical method called Variational Homotopy Perturbation Method (VHPM), which is a combination of the well-known Variational Iteration method (VIM) and the Homotopy Perturbation method (HPM) for solving the one-dimensional Burger’s equation. Two test problems are presented to demontrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the proposed method.The numerical solutions obtained are compared with the exact solution. Furthermore, this method does not require spatial discretization or restrictive assumptions and is free from round-off errors and therefore reduce the numerical computation significanly. The present paper describes a model of resource biomass and population with a non-linear catch rate function on resource biomass. The harvesting effort is assumed to be a dynamical variable. Tax on per unit harvested resource biomass is used as a tool to control exploitation of the resource. Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle is used to find the optimal control to maintain the resource biomass and population at an optimal level. A numerical simulation is also carried out to support the analytical results.

Tertiary Çank›r› – Çorum Basin is one of the biggest basin covering evaporitic formations in the Central Anatolia. During borehole drills carried out in Bozk›r Formation which contain Pliocene aged evaporites in the basin, a thick rocksalt (halite, NaCl) deposit was detected that consisting of glauberite (Na2Ca(SO4)2) interlayers (sabhka) synchronous with sedimentation. Rocksalt bearing layers in Bozk›r formation which was deposited in playa-lake – sabhka environment, where seasonal changes are effective, were first defined as Tuz member in this study. This research was conducted in twenty nine Dublin City Council senior citizen sheltered housing dwellings. Temperature (°C) and relative humidity (% RH) was recorded inside all dwellings using data loggers over two separate monitoring periods of four months between December and March of 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. Energy usage including gas and electricity was also recorded for each dwelling during both monitoring periods. Outside ambient temperature data for both periods was acquired from Met Eireann. Nnlo Hard Functions In Massless Qcd, Alessandro Broggio, Andrea Ferroglia, Ben D. Pecjak, Zhibai Zhang

We derive the hard functions for all 2 → 2 processes in massless QCD up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong coupling constant. By employing the known one- and two-loop helicity amplitudes for these processes, we obtain analytic expressions for the ultraviolet and infrared finite, minimally subtracted hard functions, which are matrices in color space. These hard functions will be useful in carrying out higher-order resummations in processes such as dijet and highly energetic top-quark pair production by means of soft-collinear effective theory methods.

In P-bar Theory, Perkins et al. (2014) proposed a rule based method for determining the context of a partext (i.e., a part of a text document).
In Transformation-Based Error-Driven Learning and Natural Language Processing: A Case Study in Part-of-Speech Tagging Brill (1995) demonstrates a method of error-driven learning applied to individual words at the sentence level to determine the part of speech each word represents.
We combine these two concepts providing a transformation-based error-driven learning algorithm to improve the results obtained from the static rules Perkins proposed and determine if the rule order prediction will provide additional metadata.

Dryland salinity is a hydrologically driven land degradation hazard in the south-west agricultural region of Western Australia (WA). Shallow-rooted annual crops and pastures transpire significantly less water than the native vegetation they replaced, leading to an increase in recharge, rising groundwater levels and the development of shallow watertables in areas where often none existed previously. Rising groundwater levels mobilise soluble salts, naturally stored at high concentrations in the regolith. These salts can be concentrated in the root zone of vegetation by evapotranspiration.
