Synthesis, Structural Characterization, And Antimicrobial Efficiency Of Sulfadiazine Azo-Azomethine Dyes And Their Bi-Homonuclear Uranyl Complexes For Chemotherapeutic Use, Abdalla M. Khedr, Fawaz A. Saad

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Two sulfadiazine azo-azomethine dyes containing two active coordination centers and their bi-homonuclear UO_2(II)-complexes were synthesized for potential chemotherapeutic use. The ligands were prepared, starting from the coupling of sulfadiazine dizonium salt with acetylacetone, followed by condensation with ethylenediamine and 1,6-hexanediamine (HL^I and HL^{II}) using a modified literature procedure. The structures of the ligands and their UO_2(II)-complexes were elucidated by conventional and thermal gravimetric analyses, molar conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, and IR, UV-Vis, ^1H NMR, and mass spectra. The analytical and spectral data supported the binuclear formulation of the complexes with a 2:1 metal to ligand ratio and octahedral geometry. The molar …

The Synthesis Of 1,3-Dialkyl-4-Methylimidazolinium Salts And Their Application In Palladium Catalyzed Heck Coupling Reactions, Murat Yi̇ği̇t, Güli̇n Bayam, Beyhan Yi̇ği̇t, İsmai̇l Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Seven novel 1,3-dialkyl-4-methylimidazolinium chloride salts 3a--g were prepared as precursors of N-heterocyclic carbenes by reacting N,N'-alkyl-1,2-diaminopropane, triethyl orthoformate, and ammonium chloride. The salts were characterized spectroscopically. The in situ prepared palladium complexes derived from the imidazolinium salts and palladium acetate were used as catalyst in Heck coupling reactions between aryl bromides and styrene. The corresponding Heck products were obtained in good yields.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

NiO--Al_2O_3--ZrO_2 and Co_3O_4--Al_2O_3--ZrO_2 catalysts were prepared by three different co-precipitation methods, namely co-precipitation, surfactant-assisted co-precipitation, and surfactant-assisted co-precipitation with ultrasound mixing methods, and their activities were tested in selective CO methanation. Catalysts were characterized using N_2 physisorption, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and TPR-H_2 techniques. CO methanation and selective CO methanation reactions were carried out. Catalysts prepared by surfactant assisted co-precipitation gave high surface area, uniform pore size distributions, and small pores. The NiO--Al_2O_3--ZrO_2 catalyst prepared by surfactant-assisted co-precipitation gave 50% CO conversion to CH_4 at 155 °C and all CO converted to CH_4 when T > 225 °C. For the selective …

Gaseous And Dissolved Oxygen Sensing With Stabilized Pyrene In Ionic Liquid Modified Electrospun Slides, Özlem Öter, Gülhan Sabanci Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Pyrene dye has many superior characteristics for oxygen sensing studies such as long fluorescence lifetime, high quantum yield, and good sensitivity. It is preferred in some cases over ruthenium dyes for its more lipophilic character and higher sensitivity. However, easy photodegradation of pyrene is a challenging problem. In this study, pyrene dye was for the first time immobilized in an ethyl cellulose matrix and used for oxygen sensing in the form of thin films and electrospun sensing slides. The hydrophobic ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate was used as additive for the first time for dissolved oxygen sensing studies. The oxygen sensitivity …

Kinetics Study And Influence Of Water-Soluble Polymer On The Electrodeposition Of Iron From A Citrate-Chloride Electrolyte On The Basis Of Fe(Iii), Vyacheslav Protsenko, Felix Danilov

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The kinetics of the iron electrodeposition reaction from a plating bath containing trivalent iron ions is investigated in the present work. The electrochemical reaction is stated to proceed via the formation of relatively stable intermediates: Fe(II) ions. Only a part of the total amount of Fe(II) ions formed at the first stage of Fe(III) discharge is reduced further, producing metal iron. The effect of polyhexamethyleneguanidine hydrochloride (with an average molecular weight of 1000) on the iron deposition is ascertained. The presence of polymer additive in the iron electrolyte appreciably affects the rate of iron deposition, while the polymer additive does …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A rhodamine B derivative containing 1,2,4-triazole as subunit was characterized as an "off-on" type Cu$^{2+}$-selective fluorescent probe. It exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for Cu$^{2+}$ in ethanol-water solution (9:1, v:v, pH 7.0, 20 mM HEPES) and underwent ring opening. A prominent fluorescence enhancement at 570 nm was observed in the presence of Cu$^{2+}$ with the change in the absorption spectrum, and a 1:1 metal-ligand complex was formed. With the optimized experimental conditions, the probe exhibited a dynamic response range for Cu$^{2+}$ from 8.0 $\times $ 10$^{-7}$ to 7.5 $\times $ 10$^{-6}$ M with a detection limit of 2.3 $\times $ …

Acid-Free Synthesis Of S-Nitrosothiols At Neutral Ph By Shock-Freezing In Liquid Nitrogen, Dimitrios Tsikas, Anke Böhmer, Arne Trettin, Arslan Arinç Kayaçelebi̇ Jan 2015

Acid-Free Synthesis Of S-Nitrosothiols At Neutral Ph By Shock-Freezing In Liquid Nitrogen, Dimitrios Tsikas, Anke Böhmer, Arne Trettin, Arslan Arinç Kayaçelebi̇

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A laboratory method for the acid-free synthesis of S-nitrosothiols (RSNO) from NaNO$_{2}$ and thiols in aqueous buffer of neutral pH is reported. Equimolar amounts of NaNO$_{2}$ and thiol are added to a 100-$\mu $M Na$_{4}$EDTA-containing Na$_{2}$HPO$_{4}$ buffer (100 mM, pH 7.4). Samples are set into liquid nitrogen for 1 min and then thawed to room temperature or in an ice bath. Dependent upon the RSNO, repetition of the procedure may be required. This method may be of particular importance when the classical acid-based method fails or releases harmful gases such as H$_{2}$S.

Some Concrete Operators And Their Properties, Mehmet Gürdal, Mubariz T. Garayev, Suna Saltan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We consider integration and double integration operators, the Hardy operator, and multiplication and composition operators on Lebesgue space $L_{p}\left[ 0,1\right] $ and Sobolev spaces $W_{p}^{\left( n\right) }\left[ 0,1\right] $ and $W_{p}^{\left( n\right) }\left( \left[ 0,1\right] \times\left[ 0,1\right] \right) ,$ and we study their properties. In particular, we calculate norm and spectral multiplicity of the Hardy operator and some multiplication operators, investigate its extended eigenvectors, characterize some composition operators in terms of the extended eigenvectors of the Hardy operator, and calculate the numerical radius of the integration operator on the real $L_{2}\left[ 0,1\right] $ space. The main method for our investigation …

Endophyte Growth On Two Species Of Conifers On The Shawangunk Ridge, Mid-Hudson Valley, New York, Hannah Valeruz, Michelle Hersh, Issa Friedlander, Cassidy Bernstein, Beryl Kahn, Howard R. Feldman

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research

The Middle Silurian Shawangunk Formation is underlain by the Upper Ordovician Martinsburg Formation in the mid-Hudson Valley. The Shawangunk Ridge is composed of a very resistant quartz pebble conglomerate whereas the Martinsburg consists of less resistant shales and graywackes. Endophytes are fungi growing asymptomatically in plant tissues that are thought to act as a support system for the plant, protecting against desiccation and pathogens. We compared the diversity of endophytes colonizing two species of conifers, Pinus strobus and Tsuga canadensis, on two different substrates, conglomerate and shale. We hypothesized that there would be a marked difference in diversity between …

Constructing A Man-Made Oyster Reef In The Little Hellgate Salt Marsh, Randall's Island, New York: A Project Overview, Beryl C. M. Kahn, Howard R. Feldman, Christopher D. Girgenti, Daniel M. Molinaro

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research

Atlantic oyster beds provide instrumental estuarine infrastructure, shaping waterways and mediating the impacts of storm surge. In addition, the reefs provide habitat for numerous species. The oysters themselves are expert filter feeders, remediating poor water quality at little cost to the organism. As the free-swimming oyster larvae (spat) only settle on the shells of their forbears, the reefs are essential in perpetuation of the species, as well as for the continuation of such invaluable ecosystem services. Oyster reefs of the New York City waterway system have long been subject to environmental degradation, from water pollution and sedimentation to dredging. Randall’s …

The effect of solid-body blocking in a large (257 l) Blazka-style respirometer was examined in gag Mycteroperca microlepis. Gag ranging from 376-690 mm total length were tested at velocities from 10 to 91 cm s-1 . The solid blocking effect (SBE) due to fish size, swimming speed, and water temperature was investigated by direct measurement of flow velocity at the area of the fish’s maximum girth as compared to measurements at the rear (center) of the swimming chamber. Three models were compared as corrections for the SBE: the standard Bell and Terhune (BT), a novel modification of the Bell and …

Investigating The Photorecombination Dynamics In Molecular High-Harmonic Spectra, Benjamin Parker Wilson Jan 2015

Investigating The Photorecombination Dynamics In Molecular High-Harmonic Spectra, Benjamin Parker Wilson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The work presented in this dissertation will relate the photorecombination dynamics to photoionization dynamics in SF6 utilizing the self-probing mechanism, high harmonic generation (HHG). This work specifically aims to establish parameters for which the comparison is applicable and the macroscopic complications inherent in HHG do not interfere with the extraction of dynamic information. The first part of this work established the macroscopic experimental apparatus necessary for consistent spectroscopic observation. It is shown that using a gas jet that is an order of magnitude shorter than the Rayleigh length of the driving laser results in more consistent harmonic spatial profiles and …

Well-Quasi-Ordering By The Induced-Minor Relation, Chanun Lewchalermvongs Jan 2015

Well-Quasi-Ordering By The Induced-Minor Relation, Chanun Lewchalermvongs

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Robertson and Seymour proved Wagner's Conjecture, which says that finite graphs are well-quasi-ordered by the minor relation. Their work motivates the question as to whether any class of graphs is well-quasi-ordered by other containment relations. This dissertation is concerned with a special graph containment relation, the induced-minor relation. This dissertation begins with a brief introduction to various graph containment relations and their connections with well-quasi-ordering. In the first chapter, we discuss the results about well-quasi-ordering by graph containment relations and the main problems of this dissertation. The graph theory terminology and preliminary results that will be used are presented in …

Game Theoretic Analyses Of The United States-Canada Softwood Lumber Trade, Rajan Parajuli Jan 2015

Game Theoretic Analyses Of The United States-Canada Softwood Lumber Trade, Rajan Parajuli

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The ongoing softwood lumber trade dispute between the United States (U.S.) and Canada is one of the most contentious and largest bilateral trade battles over the recent decades. The bilateral trade debate is mostly because of the different forestland ownership systems in the U.S. and Canada, and the alleged timber subsidies by provincial governments to Canadian lumber producers. The Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA) 2006 between the U.S. and Canada is the latest transitory solution of this dispute, entailing Canada to impose mandatory export charges on its lumber shipments to the U.S. In order to understand this trade dispute from a …

Left-Orderability, Cyclic Branched Covers And Representations Of The Knot Group, Ying Hu Jan 2015

Left-Orderability, Cyclic Branched Covers And Representations Of The Knot Group, Ying Hu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A group G is called left-orderable if one can find a total order on G, which is preserved under left multiplication. In this paper we first give a sufficient condition for the fundamental group of the nth cyclic branched cover of the three sphere over a prime knot K to be left-orderable, in terms of representations of the knot group. Then we make use of this criterion to study the left-orderability of fundamental groups of cyclic branched covers over two-bridge knots and satellite knots.

Polyhedral Problems In Combinatorial Convex Geometry, Liam Solus Jan 2015

Polyhedral Problems In Combinatorial Convex Geometry, Liam Solus

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this dissertation, we exhibit two instances of polyhedra in combinatorial convex geometry. The first instance arises in the context of Ehrhart theory, and the polyhedra are the central objects of study. The second instance arises in algebraic statistics, and the polyhedra act as a conduit through which we study a nonpolyhedral problem.

In the first case, we examine combinatorial and algebraic properties of the Ehrhart h*-polynomial of the r-stable (n,k)-hypersimplices. These are a family of polytopes which form a nested chain of subpolytopes within the (n,k)-hypersimplex. We show that a well-studied unimodular triangulation of the (n,k)-hypersimplex restricts to a …

Attosecond Transient Absorption In Gases And High Harmonic Generation In Solids, Mengxi Wu Jan 2015

Attosecond Transient Absorption In Gases And High Harmonic Generation In Solids, Mengxi Wu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We present a theoretical study of attosecond transient absorption in gases and high harmonic generation in solids. In this thesis, different features in the attosecond transient absorption laser-dressed spectrum are studied, including features near bright (dipole allowed) atomic states and features that appear approximately one or two laser photons away from the bright states due to the laser-induced coupling to dark (non-dipole allowed) states. The calculations are carried out using both numerical and analytic solutions to the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation (TDSE). From these solutions, several models of time-dependent absorption and electron dynamics at the femtosecond time scale are presented. We …

Universal Computation With Arbitrary Polyomino Tiles In Non-Cooperative Self-Assembly, Sándor P. Fekete, Jacob Hendricks, Matthew J. Patitz, Trent A. Rogers Jan 2015

Universal Computation With Arbitrary Polyomino Tiles In Non-Cooperative Self-Assembly, Sándor P. Fekete, Jacob Hendricks, Matthew J. Patitz, Trent A. Rogers

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we explore the power of geometry to overcome the limitations of non-cooperative self-assembly. We define a generalization of the abstract Tile Assembly Model (aTAM), such that a tile system consists of a collection of polyomino tiles, the Polyomino Tile Assembly Model (polyTAM), and investigate the computational powers of polyTAM systems at temperature 1, where attachment among tiles occurs without glue cooperation (i.e., without the enforcement that more than one tile already existing in an assembly must contribute to the binding of a new tile). Systems composed of the unit-square tiles of the aTAM at temperature 1 …

Bluetooth Low Energy beacon devices, typically operating on coin cell batteries, have emerged as key components of micro-location wireless sensor networks. To design efficient and reliable networks, designers require tools for predicting battery and beacon lifetime, based on design parameters that are specific to micro-location applications. This design science research contributes to the implementation of an artifact functioning as a predictive tool for coin cell battery lifetime when powering Bluetooth Low Energy beacon devices. Building upon effective and corroborated components from other researchers, the Beacon Lifetime Model 1.0 was developed as a spreadsheet workbook, providing a user interface for designers …

Observational Evidence Of Quasi-27-Day Oscillation Propagating From The Lower Atmosphere To The Mesosphere Over 20° N, K.M. Huang, Alan Liu, S.D. Zhang, F. Yi, C.M. Huang Jan 2015

Observational Evidence Of Quasi-27-Day Oscillation Propagating From The Lower Atmosphere To The Mesosphere Over 20° N, K.M. Huang, Alan Liu, S.D. Zhang, F. Yi, C.M. Huang

Publications

By using meteor radar, radiosonde and satellite observations over 20° N and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data during 81 days from 22 December 2004 to 12 March 2005, a quasi-27-day oscillation propagating from the troposphere to the mesosphere is reported. A pronounced 27-day periodicity is observed in the raw zonal wind from meteor radar. Spectral analysis shows that the oscillation also occurs in the meridional wind and temperature and propagates westward with wavenumber s = 1; thus the oscillation is of Rossby wave type. The oscillation attains a large amplitude of about 12 m s−1 in the eastward wind shear region of …

The Damaging Effects Of Climate Change Denial, Richard Snow, Mary Snow Jan 2015

The Damaging Effects Of Climate Change Denial, Richard Snow, Mary Snow

Publications

It has been said that those who are denying climate change are like the ostrich that sticks her head in the sand, but is this analogy entirely accurate? By hiding from the threat, does the ostrich make the threat go away, mitigate it, or make it greater? Probably, she does not. However, denying the existence of climate change does exacerbate the problem and exponentially so. As the renowned British economist Nicholas Stern reports, the longer world leaders wait to take serious action to curtail climate change, the more it will cost. As the Chair of the Grantham Research Institute on …

The Biogeochemistry Of Elemental Sulfur Contaminated Soils: Insights Into Effective Remediation, Michael Ryan Mctee Jan 2015

The Biogeochemistry Of Elemental Sulfur Contaminated Soils: Insights Into Effective Remediation, Michael Ryan Mctee

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Soil contamination that results from elemental sulfur (S0) deposition is a new occurrence. Elemental sulfur is stockpiled as a byproduct from the oil and gas industry and is deposited by biodegradable trap and skeet targets at shooting ranges. Chemolithotrophs and mixotrophs can oxidize S0 to H2SO4. Consequently, in areas where excess S0 is deposited or stockpiled, soils can acidify to pH values observed with acid mine drainage.

I studied S0 contamination at a former sporting clay range. For seven years, the range used biodegradable trap and skeet targets that contained S …

Remaking Nature In Montana: Topophilic Considerations Of Wolves And Wolf Trapping, Andrew Myers

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In 2011, after nearly forty years of federal protection, the gray wolf was removed from the Endangered Species List in Montana and its management entrusted to the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. The implementation of public trapping seasons in 2012 as a method to control wolf populations has further inflamed an already embroiled debate. The purpose of this research was to investigate how the presence of wolves and wolf trapping impacts human attachments to landscapes of “nature” in Montana by focusing on the following questions: What are the public’s social constructions of wolves? What are the public’s social constructions of …
