Bi-Hamiltonian structures are of great importance in the theory of integrable Hamiltonian systems. The notion of compatibility of symplectic structures is a key aspect of bi-Hamiltonian systems. Because of this, a few different notions of compatibility have been introduced. In this paper we show that, under some additional assumptions, compatibility in the sense of Magri implies a notion of compatibility due to Fass`o and Ratiu, that we dub bi-affine compatibility. We present two proofs of this fact. The first one uses the uniqueness of the connection parallelizing all the Hamiltonian vector fields tangent to the leaves of a Lagrangian foliation. …

If you race a hoop and a disk of equal mass and radius by rolling them down a ramp, the disk will reach the bottom first due to the difference in how the mass is distributed. For rolling solid objects, this phenomenon is straightforward to model. However, if you roll a hollow cylinder filled with fluid, the situation is more complex due to the way fluid properties, such as viscosity, effect rotation. In video analysis lab experiments, students frequently find large discrepancies between results based on self-filmed videos and expected values (e.g. for g determined by a fit to projectile motion data). These differences are frequently far larger than the uncertainty calculated from their fit. Using an inexpensive point-and-shoot camera with a 4x optical zoom to record video, we investigated two possible causes of this error: the effect of placing the reference meter stick at a different object-to-camera distance and the effect of the motion of interest being in a plane not perpendicular to the camera lens. Several different approaches to the A-ring functionalization of an advanced, highly functionalized diosphenol precursor to Taxol are described. The first phase of the undertaking consists of an assessment of those reagents conducive to reaction at the enolic oxygen (silylation, methylation, allylation, and acylation). Transformations involving an alternative attack at the enol carbon center (bromination, selenation) have also been defined. Sodium borohydride reduction operates from the beta-face of C-14 as long as the C-1 hydroxyl is not protected so as to offer steric exclusion. Key features include a three-step synthesis of the individual antipodes of actinidine by a novel tandem cycloaddition/pyridine formation and a facile diastereoselective synthesis of both enantiomers of dolichodial.

The complex (tBu-SalAmEE)Al (tBu-SalAmEEH3 = N,N-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol, 1) catalyzes the ring-expansion polymerization of lactide to form cyclic poly(lactide) (cPLA). The X-ray structure of 1 was determined, its polymerization kinetics were examined and its interactions with Lewis bases were observed. The data from these experiments are consistent with a coordination–insertion mechanism whose rate-determining step is catalyst rearrangement by loss of a hemilabile, datively bound, bridging ligand ether. cPLA was examined by thermogravimetric analysis and found more stable than its linear counterpart. A well-defined, highly active and selective catalyst for the synthesis of succinic anhydrides from CO and β-lactones is reported. At 200 psi of CO, the catalyst [(N,N‘-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)phenylenediamino)Al(THF)2][Co(CO)4] carbonylates β-propiolactones to succinic anhydrides in high yield. (R)-β-Butyrolactone is carbonylated to (S)-methylsuccinic anhydride with clean inversion of stereochemistry, while cis-2,3-dimethyl-β-propiolactone yields exclusively trans-2,3-dimethylsuccinic anhydride. These data are consistent with a mechanism involving nucleophilic attack by [Co(CO)4]- on the β carbon of the lactone, followed by CO insertion and anhydride formation.

Polymer synthesis, in particular, has seen a revolution in control. It is now possible to precisely predetermine chain length, extent of cross-linking, comonomer incorporation, block length, stereochemistry and topology.(4) There has even been success in sequence control,(5) previously achieved only in biological systems. A detailed mechanistic investigation of epoxide carbonylation by the catalyst [(salph)Al(THF)2]+ [Co(CO)4]- (1, salph = N,N‘-o-phenylenebis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylideneimine), THF = tetrahydrofuran) is reported. When the carbonylation of 1,2-epoxybutane (EB) to β-valerolactone is performed in 1,2-dimethoxyethane solution, the reaction rate is independent of the epoxide concentration and the carbon monoxide pressure but first order in 1. The rate of lactone formation varies considerably in different solvents and depends primarily on the coordinating ability of the solvent. In mixtures of THF andcis/trans-2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran, the reaction is first order in THF. From spectroscopic and kinetic data, the catalyst resting state was assigned to be the neutral …

This lab presents an opportunity for advanced students of organic or inorganic chemistry to prepare a compound that belongs to a recently introduced class of catalyst that are active for the carbonylation of epoxides and related substrates to β-lactones and related products. Epoxides are inexpensive and readily available while β-lactones are not and have broad utility in both small molecule and polymer synthesis. The Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) study seeks to use modern measurement technology to infer the causes of pneumonia for which gold-standard evidence is unavailable. The paper describes a latent variable model designed to infer from case-control data the etiology distribution for the population of cases, and for an individual case given his or her measurements. We assume each observation is drawn from a mixture model for which each component represents one cause or disease class. Injection attacks, including SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and operating system command injection, rank the top two entries in the MITRE Common Vulnerability Enumeration (CVE) [1]. Under this attack model, an application (e.g., a web application) uses some untrusted input to produce an output program (e.g., a SQL query). Applications may be vulnerable to injection attacks because the untrusted input may alter the output program in malicious ways. Recent work has established a rigorous definition of injection attacks. One of the key enablers of shape and growth in plant cells is the cortical microtubule (CMT) system, which is a polymer array that forms an appropriately-structured scaffolding in each cell. Plant biologists have shown that stochastic dynamics and simple rules of interactions between CMTs can lead to a coaligned CMT array structure. However, the mechanisms and conditions that cause CMT arrays to become organized are not well understood. Coastal forest retreat in the Florida Keys during the 20th century has been attributed to a combination of sea level rise and hurricane storm surge impacts, but the interactions between these two disturbances leading to forest decline are not well understood. The goal of my research was to assess their effects over a period spanning more than two decades, and to examine the relationships between these press and pulse disturbances and freshwater availability in pine rockland, hardwood hammock, and supratidal scrub communities. In this essay, we examine the response of an Unruh–DeWitt (UD) detector (a quantum two-level system) to a gravitational wave background. The spectrum of the UD detector is of the same form as some scattering processes or three body decays such as muon-electron scattering or muon decay. Based on this similarity, we propose that the UD detector response implies a “decay” or attenuation of gravitons, G, into photons, γ, via G+G→γ+γ or G→γ+γ+G. Over large distances such a decay/attenuation may have consequences in regard to the detection of gravitational waves.

He decided that if the plasma was still there, it would be producing light. So we set out to prove that the light emitted from his plasma lasted longer than the current draw measurements.

The present study had two main objectives. The first was to determine the degree of understanding of climate change, sea level and sea level rise among middle school students. Combining open-ended questions with likert-scaled questions, we identified student conceptions on these topics in 86 students from 7th and 8th grades during 2012 and 2013 before and after implementing a Curriculum Unit (CU). Additional information was obtained by adding drawings to the open-ended questions during the second year to gauge how student conceptions varied from a verbal and a visual perspective. For more than 20 years, the State of Florida, under both the Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, has worked closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to develop these plans for coastal and marine oil spill response. Protocol verification is an exciting area of network security that intersects engineering and formal methods. This thesis presents a comparison of formal verification tools for security protocols for their respective strengths and weaknesses supported by the results from several case studies. The formal verification tools considered are based on explicit model checking (SPIN), symbolic analysis (Proverif) and theorem proving (Coq). Gunshot residue (GSR) is the term used to describe the particles originating from different parts of the firearm and ammunition during the discharge. A fast and practical field tool to detect the presence of GSR can assist law enforcement in the accurate identification of subjects.

A novel field sampling device is presented for the first time for the fast detection and quantitation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The capillary microextraction of volatiles (CMV) is a headspace sampling technique that provides fast results (< 2 min. sampling time) and is reported as a versatile and high-efficiency sampling tool. The CMV device can be coupled to a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) instrument by installation of a thermal separation probe in the injection port of the GC.

Oil from the Deepwater Horizon blowout reached the Gulf of Mexico coast in the summer of 2010 and potentially exposed species living in those areas to toxic chemicals. The purpose of this study is to examine otoliths from Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) for evidence of oil exposure that could be related to reduced growth rates. Because otolith growth and somatic growth are directly related, differences in annulus measurements can indicate differences in annual somatic growth, which is a good indicator of overall fish condition, and translates into changes in survival and lifetime reproductive potential. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from the oxidation of monoterpenes can impact the Earth’s radiation balance, act as cloud condensation nuclei and negatively affect human health. In the summer of 2015, the Secondary Organic Aerosol From Forest Emission Experiment (SOAFFEE) laboratory campaign was launched in order to study the physical properties of SOA generated from the oxidation of alpha pinene and delta carene. Both compounds are gas-phase monoterpenes emitted into the atmosphere via biogenic sources.
