An Investigation On Electrochemical Performance Of Supercapacitor Electrode Materials Prepared By Mno2 With Four Different Crystal Forms, Zhen-Kun Wei, Xiao-Zhen Hua, Ke Xiao, Xian-Liang Zhou, Zhi-Guo Ye

Journal of Electrochemistry

Four types of α-MnO2, β-MnO2, γ-MnO2 and δ-MnO2 powders were synthesized by relatively simple methods. The differences in crystal structures and surface morphologies for these forms of MnO2 were investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and specific surface area analysis (BET). The electrochemical performances were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and stability analysis. Based on the experimental results, four kinds of MnO2 electrodes showed good capacity properties, and the α-MnO2 electrode had the largest specific capacity due to the highest specific surface …

The Agricultural Footprints On The Environment, Philip Houtz Aug 2015

The Agricultural Footprints On The Environment, Philip Houtz

Kaleidoscope

Industrialized agricultural systems have given America a convenient and affordable means to supply a surplus of food products to its citizens. Transgenic technology, synthesized fertilizers, advanced pesticides, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and the use of farm machinery have all contributed to humanity’s ability to feed the world’s rapidly growing population. However, the energy-intensive food operation of today may not be as ideal as we assume. Fossil fuels are burned to meet the energy requirements for the continual production of large quantities of fertilizer and to keep farm machines operational. Fertilizer and pesticide runoff from farmland ultimately drains into rivers …

Morphology And Morphometry Of Double Layered Ejecta Craters On Mars, Ryan Schwegman Aug 2015

Morphology And Morphometry Of Double Layered Ejecta Craters On Mars, Ryan Schwegman

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Double layered ejecta (DLE) craters display two distinct layers of ejecta that appear to have been emplaced as a mobile, ground-hugging flow. While volatile content within the target, atmosphere, or some combination of the two is generally considered a major variable enhancing the mobility of ejecta, the presence of unconsolidated surface materials may also have some effect. This statement is studied further here, aiming to determine whether bulk target lithology and/or attributes of the surface have any effect on morphometric properties between DLEs situated on sedimentary targets to those on volcanic ones. Results suggest that ejecta mobility (the distance ejecta …

Quantifying Undisturbed Lands in MInnesota's Prairie Coteau and Lac qui Parle Valley Regions

We employed simple GIS methods utilizing the Minnesota Farm Service Agency’s Common Land Unit (CLU) cropland data layer from 2013, along with 2013 USDA National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) county mosaic aerial imagery, to evaluate over 5 million acres of land in 14 southwest Minnesota counties, including all or portions of 10 counties within the Minnesota portion of the Prairie Coteau region and the entirety of four counties in the Lac qui Parle region. We utilized the CLU cropland layer to first identify and remove any areas with a cropping history, regardless of current land use. We then analyzed the …

Strong Resistance To Bending Observed For Nanoparticle Membranes, Yifan Wang, Jianhui Liao, Sean P. Mcbride, Efi Efrati, Xiao-Min Lin, Heinrich M. Jaeger

Physics Faculty Research

We demonstrate how gold nanoparticle monolayers can be curled up into hollow scrolls that make it possible to extract both bending and stretching moduli from indentation by atomic force microscopy. We find a bending modulus that is 2 orders of magnitude larger than predicted by standard continuum elasticity, an enhancement we associate with nonlocal microstructural constraints. This finding opens up new opportunities for independent control of resistance to bending and stretching at the nanoscale.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A series of platinum(II) biphenyl 2,2’-bipyridine complexes containing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing moieties on the 4 and 4’ positions of the bipyridine ligand exhibit emission from excited states in the 600 nm region of the spectrum upon excitation in the metal-to-ligand charge transfer transition located near 450 nm. These complexes are distorted from planarity based on both single crystal structure determinations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of isolated molecules in acetonitrile. The DFT also reveals the geometry of the lowest-lying triplet state (LLTS) of each complex that is important for emission behavior. The LLTS are assigned based on the electron …

Algorithms For Peptide Identification From Mixture Tandem Mass Spectra, Yi Liu Aug 2015

Algorithms For Peptide Identification From Mixture Tandem Mass Spectra, Yi Liu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The large amount of data collected in an mass spectrometry experiment requires effective computational approaches for the automated analysis of those data. Though extensive research has been conducted for such purpose by the proteomics community, there are still remaining challenges, among which, one particular challenge is that the identification rate of the MS/MS spectra collected is rather low. One significant reason that contributes to this situation is the frequently observed mixture spectra, which result from the concurrent fragmentation of multiple precursors in a single MS/MS spectrum. However, nearly all the mainstream computational methods still take the assumption that the acquired …

A Phylogenetic Revision Of Superfamily Himerometroidea (Echinodermata: Crinoidea), Kristian Taylor Aug 2015

A Phylogenetic Revision Of Superfamily Himerometroidea (Echinodermata: Crinoidea), Kristian Taylor

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Superfamily Himerometroidea AH Clark, 1908 (Echinodermata: Crinoidea) (formerly Mariametroidea) is the second most speciose superfamily in order Comatulida. Although it includes some of the most common species on tropical western Pacific reefs, its phylogeny is poorly understood. Genus- to species-level taxa are currently distinguished by plastic morphological characters. We revised the superfamily from species- to family-levels using a combined morphological and molecular approach. A phylogeny using two nuclear and three mitochondrial markers recovered Colobometridae and Himerometridae as paraphyletic and Mariametridae and Zygometridae as polyphyletic. Within genus Himerometra (Himerometridae), sequence data and detailed morphological examinations of multiple specimens of H. magnipinna, …

Stability Bounds On Compact Astrophysical Objects From Information-Entropic Measure, Marcelo Gleiser, Nan Jiang Aug 2015

Stability Bounds On Compact Astrophysical Objects From Information-Entropic Measure, Marcelo Gleiser, Nan Jiang

Dartmouth Scholarship

We obtain bounds on the stability of various self-gravitating astrophysical objects using a new measure of shape complexity known as configurational entropy. We apply the method to Newtonian polytropes, neutron stars with an Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation of state, and to self-gravitating configurations of complex scalar field (boson stars) with different self couplings, showing that the critical stability region of these stellar configurations obtained from traditional perturbation methods correlates well with critical points of the configurational entropy with accuracy of a few percent or better.

The Development Of Cyclic Rgd Peptides Stabilized Through 99mtc/Re(Co)3+, Aagam Patel Aug 2015

The Development Of Cyclic Rgd Peptides Stabilized Through 99mtc/Re(Co)3+, Aagam Patel

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Protein secondary structure can be mimicked by incorporating structural constraints into peptides and this can be facilitated by metal coordination. The objective of this project is to establish a chelation system with a cancer targeting peptide sequence, where the coordination to a metal centre results in a cyclic metallopeptide. Cyclic RGD peptides are antagonists for αvβ3 and other integrins, which are present during tumour angiogenesis. Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence is employed in the peptide backbone, with an un-natural amino acid (3-Pal) and a chelating molecule (pyridyl-triazole, pyta) present on opposite ends of the peptide sequence to form a …

Dielectric Spectroscopy Of Polyvinyl Alcohol Hydrogels And Nanocomposites, Nuwansiri N.K. Getangama Aug 2015

Dielectric Spectroscopy Of Polyvinyl Alcohol Hydrogels And Nanocomposites, Nuwansiri N.K. Getangama

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Gels based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) can be formed by repeated freezing and thawing of a solution of the polymer. PVA cryogels have applications as biomaterials, including artificial tissue and drug delivery systems. The mechanical and electrical properties of polymeric materials can be changed significantly by adding a small amount of nanometer-sized particles. In this work, the dielectric properties of PVA solutions and gels were studied in the frequency range from 10 micro Hz to 1 MHz as a function of temperature, using a dielectric spectrometer. Comparison of the dielectric constant of a PVA solution to that of water indicates …

Investigating Potential Climatic Cycles In Glacially-Influenced Rhythmites Of The Upper Gowganda Formation Using Geochemical, Sedimentological And Spectral Analyses, Timothy S. Howe Aug 2015

Investigating Potential Climatic Cycles In Glacially-Influenced Rhythmites Of The Upper Gowganda Formation Using Geochemical, Sedimentological And Spectral Analyses, Timothy S. Howe

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The upper Gowganda Formation of the Huronian Supergroup contains glacially-induced, varve-like rhythmites composed of turbiditic micro-laminae that potentially preserve a detailed record of climatic conditions during the Paleoproterozoic Era. A sedimentological analysis of upper Gowganda Formation deposits enabled identification of eight lithofacies comprising a glaciogenic depositional environment: 1) diamictite, 2) contorted argillite, 3) interlaminated siltstone and sandstone, 4) interbedded siltstone and claystone, 5) sandstone, 6) siltstone, 7) interbedded coarse-grained and fine-grained siltstone, and 8) wavy argillite. Major, trace, and rare earth element analyses indicate that the rhythmites have undergone limited recycling and chemical alteration. Whole-rock δ18O values are …
