An Extension Of Sharkovsky’S Theorem To Periodic Difference Equations, Ziyad Alsharawi, James Angelos, Saber Elaydi, Leela Rakesh Aug 2015

An Extension Of Sharkovsky’S Theorem To Periodic Difference Equations, Ziyad Alsharawi, James Angelos, Saber Elaydi, Leela Rakesh

Saber Elaydi

We present an extension of Sharkovsky’s Theorem and its converse to periodic difference equations. In addition, we provide a simple method for constructing a p-periodic difference equation having an r-periodic geometric cycle with or without stability properties.

Asymptotic Stability Of Linear Difference Equations Of Advanced Type, Fozi Dannan, Saber Elaydi Aug 2015

Asymptotic Stability Of Linear Difference Equations Of Advanced Type, Fozi Dannan, Saber Elaydi

Saber Elaydi

Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the asymptotic stability of difference equations of advanced typen of the form x(n) - ax(n+1) + bx(n+k) = 0, n = 0, 1, .. where a and b are arbitrary real numbers and k > 1. For a = 1, we establish an analogue of a result by Levin and May.

Basin Of Attraction Of Periodic Orbits Of Maps On The Real Line, Saber Elaydi, Robert Sacker Aug 2015

Basin Of Attraction Of Periodic Orbits Of Maps On The Real Line, Saber Elaydi, Robert Sacker

Saber Elaydi

We prove a conjecture by Elaydi and Yakubu which states that the basin of attraction of an attracting 2 k -cycle of the Ricker's map is where E is the set of all eventually 2 r -periodic points. The result is then extended to a more general class of continuous maps on the real line.

Hypersurfaces In Hyperbolic Space With Support Function, Vincent Bonini, José M. Espinar, Jie Qint Aug 2015

Hypersurfaces In Hyperbolic Space With Support Function, Vincent Bonini, José M. Espinar, Jie Qint

Mathematics

Based on [previous publication*], we develop a global correspondence between immersed hypersurfaces ϕ:Mn→Hn+1ϕ:Mn→Hn+1 satisfying an exterior horosphere condition, also called here horospherically concave hypersurfaces, and complete conformal metrics egSne2ρgSn on domains Ω in the boundary SnSn at infinity of Hn+1Hn+1, where ρ is the horospherical support function, ∂ϕ(Mn)=∂Ω∂∞ϕ(Mn)=∂Ω, and Ω is the image of the Gauss map G:Mn→SnG:Mn→Sn. To do so we first establish results on when the Gauss map G:Mn→SnG:Mn→Sn is injective. We also …

A Local Baseline Of The Black Hole Mass Scaling Relations For Active Galaxies. Iii. The Mbh-Σ Relation, Vardha Nicola Bennert, Tommaso Treu, Matthew W. Auger, Maren Cosens, Daeseong Park, Rebecca Rosen, Chelsea E. Harris, Matthew A. Malkan, Jong-Hak Woo

Physics

We create a baseline of the black hole (BH) mass ()—stellar-velocity dispersion (σ) relation for active galaxies, using a sample of 66 local () Seyfert-1 galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Analysis of SDSS images yields AGN luminosities free of host-galaxy contamination, and morphological classification. 51/66 galaxies have spiral morphology. Out of these, 28 bulges have Sérsic index and are considered candidate pseudo-bulges, with eight being definite pseudo-bulges based on multiple classification criteria met. Only 4/66 galaxies show signs of interaction/merging. High signal-to-noise ratio Keck spectra provide the width of the broad Hβ emission …

Comparative Sorption Of Methylene Blue Onto Hydrophobic Clays, Alvaro D. Sponza, Natalia J. Fernandez, David Yang, Karla A. Ortiz, Abel E. Navarro Aug 2015

Comparative Sorption Of Methylene Blue Onto Hydrophobic Clays, Alvaro D. Sponza, Natalia J. Fernandez, David Yang, Karla A. Ortiz, Abel E. Navarro

Publications and Research

Chemical modifications of clay to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions at room temperature were compared. Natural bentonite (NC) was modified by cation exchange with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (HC), bencyltriethylammonium chloride (BC), and tetramethylammonium chloride (TC) to reverse the surface polarity of the hydrophilic bentonite. The adsorption of MB was studied and fitted by the adsorption theories of Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Temkin. Equilibrium parameters were calculated, indicating that chemical modification did not improve the adsorption, due to the electrostatic adsorption mechanism. Specific surface area was determined, reporting the following trend: NC > TC > BC > HC. Isotherms show that TC is …

Spontaneous Synchrony On Graphs And The Emergence Of Order From Disorder, Dylan Linville, Daniel Trugillo Martins Fontes Aug 2015

Spontaneous Synchrony On Graphs And The Emergence Of Order From Disorder, Dylan Linville, Daniel Trugillo Martins Fontes

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

From pulsars to pedestrians and bacteria to brain cells, objects that exhibit cyclical behavior, called oscillators, are found in a variety of different settings. When oscillators adjust their behavior in response to nearby oscillators, they often achieve a state of synchrony, in which they all have the same phase and frequency. Here, we explore the Kuramoto model, a simple and general model which describes oscillators as dynamical systems on a graph and has been used to study synchronization in systems ranging from firefly swarms to the power grid. We discuss analytical and numerical methods used to investigate the governing system …

C-Learning: A New Classification Framework To Estimate Optimal Dynamic Treatment Regimes, Baqun Zhang, Min Zhang Aug 2015

C-Learning: A New Classification Framework To Estimate Optimal Dynamic Treatment Regimes, Baqun Zhang, Min Zhang

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Personalizing treatment to accommodate patient heterogeneity and the evolving nature of a disease over time has received considerable attention lately. A dynamic treatment regime is a set of decision rules, each corresponding to a decision point, that determine that next treatment based on each individual’s own available characteristics and treatment history up to that point. We show that identifying the optimal dynamic treatment regime can be recast as a sequential classification problem and is equivalent to sequentially minimizing a weighted expected misclassification error. This general classification perspective targets the exact goal of optimally individualizing treatments and is new and fundamentally …

Polycations Xxii. Ru(Bpy)2l2 And Ru(Phen)2l2 Systems With Cationic 4,4’-Bipyridine Ligands: Syntheses, Characteristics, And Interactions With Dna, Jasmine Hatcher, Freida Zavurov, Leslie Babukutty, Thomas Strekas, Robert Engel

Publications and Research

Earlier efforts have been concerned with the association of Ruthenium octahedral complexes with DNA. Since the positively charged ruthenium species has been found to associate with the electron rich major groove of double-stranded DNA, it was proposed the addition of cationic sites on the ligands attached to ruthenium would facilitate such association. Thus, we have synthesized several series of octahedral ruthenium complexes bearing ligands having within themselves cationic sites. These have been investigated in their interaction with calf thymus DNA using fluorescence titration analysis. The introduction of the cationic ligands has been found to exhibit enhanced association of the ruthenium …

Soluble Amyloid-Beta 42 Aggregates Stimulate Cellular Inflammation Independent Of Cd47, Sanjib Karki Aug 2015

Soluble Amyloid-Beta 42 Aggregates Stimulate Cellular Inflammation Independent Of Cd47, Sanjib Karki

Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation and deposition of aggregated amyloid-β protein (Aβ). Most of the studies indicate that Aβ1-42) and Aβ(1-40) play an important role in the neurodegenerative pathology in AD. A critical component of AD pathology is inflammation, which results from the activation of glial cells around the Aβ deposits. The goal of my dissertation research was to determine the role of Aβ aggregation in microglia-triggered inflammation and identify cellular components that mediate the inflammatory response. CD47 is a cellular receptor found on the microglia surface and it has been proposed to have …

Weak Interactions Between Salmonella Enterica Flhb And Other Flagellar Export Apparatus Proteins Govern Type Iii Secretion Dynamics, Jonathan L. Mcmurry, Tohru Minamino, Yukio Furukawa, Joshua W. Francis Aug 2015

Weak Interactions Between Salmonella Enterica Flhb And Other Flagellar Export Apparatus Proteins Govern Type Iii Secretion Dynamics, Jonathan L. Mcmurry, Tohru Minamino, Yukio Furukawa, Joshua W. Francis

Faculty Articles

The bacterial flagellum contains its own type III secretion apparatus that coordinates protein export with assembly at the distal end. While many interactions among export apparatus proteins have been reported, few have been examined with respect to the differential affinities and dynamic relationships that must govern the mechanism of export. FlhB, an integral membrane protein, plays critical roles in both export and the substrate specificity switching that occurs upon hook completion. Reported herein is the quantitative characterization of interactions between the cytoplasmic domain of FlhB (FlhBC) and other export apparatus proteins including FliK, FlhAC and FliI. FliK and FlhAC bound …

The Influence Of Surface Chemistry On The Photoelectrochemical Properties Of Fes(2) Photoanodes, Qi Tong Aug 2015

The Influence Of Surface Chemistry On The Photoelectrochemical Properties Of Fes(2) Photoanodes, Qi Tong

Dissertations and Theses

The recurring theme of this dissertation is the correlation between FeS2 surface chemistry and key electrical and electronic properties of FeS2. Efforts have been made to identify and characterize the FeS2 surface, investigate the photoelectrochemistry of FeS2 photoanodes under anhydrous and anoxic conditions, and investigate the influence of deliberate surface chemistry on FeS2 photoelectrochemistry.

Infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) was used to investigate a thin adsorbate layer on pyrite. The results showed that the combination of angle-dependent studies and computational efforts are a powerful tool for characterizing the pyrite surface.

The photoelectrochemistry of FeS2 …

Healthy And Unhealthy Statistics: Examining The Impact Of Erroneous Statistical Analyses In Health-Related Research, Britney Allen Aug 2015

Healthy And Unhealthy Statistics: Examining The Impact Of Erroneous Statistical Analyses In Health-Related Research, Britney Allen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Sound statistical analyses are essential to the advancement of medicine. Although certainly not always the case, far too many publications are based on weak or inappropriate statistical methodology, leading to questionable results. Statistical reporting guidelines and standards for research are being introduced which should help curb this problem. Wide recognition of the need for statistical methodologies aligned with research questions and study designs, and the impact when this is not the case, would help prevent this problem. In this thesis, I illustrate the consequences of erroneous statistical analyses on data from an observational study on Multiple Sclerosis and I investigate …

Field Scale Application Of Nanoscale Zero Valent Iron: Mobility, Contaminant Degradation, And Impact On Microbial Communities, Chris M.D. Kocur Aug 2015

Field Scale Application Of Nanoscale Zero Valent Iron: Mobility, Contaminant Degradation, And Impact On Microbial Communities, Chris M.D. Kocur

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis began by verifying that nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) synthesis methods could be scaled up and implemented at the field scale in a safe manner. This led to successful demonstration of nZVI injection and mobility under constant head gravity injection into a contaminated utility corridor in Sarnia, Ontario. Where field studies have fallen short in the past was linking the somewhat qualitative field geochemical parameters to other evidence of nZVI transport. Definitive nZVI detection was elusive in previous field studies due to the highly reactive nature of the particles caused by their high surface area. nZVI was detected …

Glacier Change On The Three Sisters Volcanoes, Oregon: 1900-2010, Justin George Ohlschlager Aug 2015

Glacier Change On The Three Sisters Volcanoes, Oregon: 1900-2010, Justin George Ohlschlager

Dissertations and Theses

A glacier responds to changes in climate by subsequent retreat and advance as a result of changes in snow inputs and outputs. Understanding these changes is important because shrinking glaciers limit and diminish local water resources. They contribute to alpine runoff in the late-summer months by delaying the maximum runoff until late in the melt season. A comprehensive glacier and perennial snowfield inventory has not been completed for the Three Sisters in Central Oregon. Using aerial photography, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), previous studies, and historical ground based photographs these glacier and perennial snowfields were defined and their surface area change …

Scalable Equivalence Checking For Behavioral Synthesis, Zhenkun Yang Aug 2015

Scalable Equivalence Checking For Behavioral Synthesis, Zhenkun Yang

Dissertations and Theses

Behavioral synthesis is the process of compiling an Electronic System Level (ESL) design to a register-transfer level (RTL) implementation. ESL specifications define the design functionality at a high level of abstraction (e.g., with C/C++ or SystemC), and thus provide a promising approach to address the exacting demands to develop feature-rich, optimized, and complex hardware systems within aggressive time-to-market schedules. Behavioral synthesis entails application of complex and error-prone transformations during the compilation process. Therefore, the adoption of behavioral synthesis highly depends on our ability to ensure that the synthesized RTL conforms to the ESL description. This dissertation provides an end-to-end scalable …
