Explosive deaths of massive stars in core collapse supernovae are rare events that are only observed with any frequency at large intergalactic distances. This makes identification of progenitors difficult and massive star evolution a challenge to pin down. This dissertation addresses the question of how the properties of the circumstellar environment around supernovae can be used to identify progenitors via their mass loss history. Massive stars all lose mass through a variety of mechanisms that are characteristic of their mass, age, and binarity. Our dissertation focuses on bringing approximately finite-dimensional (AF) algebras into the realm of noncommutative metric geometry. We construct quantum metric structures on unital AF algebras equipped with a faithful tracial state, and prove that for such metrics, AF algebras are limits of their defining inductive sequences of finite dimensional C*-algebras for the quantum Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity. We then study the geometry, for the quantum propinquity, of three natural classes of AF algebras equipped with our quantum metrics: the UHF algebras, the Effros-Shen AF algebras associated with continued fraction expansions of irrationals, and the Cantor space, on which our construction recovers traditional …

We construct new Banach spaces using barriers in high dimensional Ellentuck spaces following the classical framework under which a Tsirelson type norm is defined from a barrier in Ellentuck space. It is shown that these spaces contain arbitrary large copies of lninfinity and specific block subspaces isomorphic to lp. We also prove that they are lp-saturated and not isomorphic to each other. Finally, a study of alternative norms for our spaces is presented.

Vertex algebras arose in conformal field theory and were first defined axiomatically by Borcherds in his famous proof of the Moonshine Conjecture in 1986. The orbifold construction is a standard way to construct new vertex algebras from old ones. Starting with a vertex algebra V and a group G of automorphisms, one considers the invariant subalgebra VG (called G-orbifold of V), and its extensions. For example, the Moonshine vertex algebra arises as an extension of the Z2-orbifold of the lattice vertex algebra associated to the Leech lattice.

Fungal spores represent an understudied subcategory of bioaerosols that can impact human health as pathogenic and allergenic particles. Fungal spores also have been shown to act as effective ice nuclei and giant cloud condensation nuclei in some cases. Perfectionism has been shown to be related to depression, but perfectionism is multidimensional. Some dimensions are related to positive psychological characteristics and outcomes and other dimensions are related to negative psychological characteristics and outcomes. This study reports results of nine meta-analyses performed to investigate the association between each of nine subscales of perfectionism and depression to determine which dimensions of perfectionism are most strongly associated with depression. We show that quasi-parton distribution functions (quasi-PDFs) may be treated as hybrids of PDFs and primordial rest-frame momentum distributions of partons. This results in a complicated convolution nature of quasi-PDFs that necessitates using large p3 ≳ 3 GeV momenta to get reasonably close to the PDF limit. Outcrops of the Middle Eocene in northern Egypt represent a Tethyan reef-rimmed carbonate platform with bedded inner-platform facies. The diagenesis of these outcrops was studied in detail. The facies are characterized by a reef core, back reef and outer lagoon, shoal, inner lagoon, and tidal flat carbonate sequences. The diagenetic sequences on the scleractinian corals and foraminifers were thoroughly examined. These sequences show various diagenetic features during episodes of fluctuating sea levels and appear to be related to the primary composition of the studied components and the transgressive-regressive cycles. In the Gandom Beryan area, basanitic lava flows erupted from fractures in the Nayband fault zone and formed an area of about 300 km2 of basanitic rocks in the western part of the Lut Block. Olivine and clinopyroxene are the major phenocrysts in a microlitic groundmass for these basanitic rocks. The geochemical data show that Gandom Beryan rocks are basanite in composition and belong to intercontinental rifts related to alkali basanites. These rocks have low Fe/Mg ratios (Fe2O3t/MgO = 1.07-1.43) with low silica content (SiO2 = 44.89-48.26 wt.%) and are high-Ti basanites. The investigated rocks are characterized by a significant …

The receiver function analysis method was used to determine the crustal structure in Central Anatolia, Turkey, by using teleseismic earthquake records. The method is based on the conversion of incident P waves into S waves reaching an interface in the crust or upper mantle and arrival of the converted wave to the station just after the direct P waves. This study investigates the spatial distribution characteristics of karstic depressions that developed on a 2558 km2 plateau with gently sloping in neritic (reef) limestones in the western section of the Bolkar Mountains. The 30,132 karstic depressions identified are located at elevations between 1315 and 2525 m, while 31°/km2 slope and 5.6 km/km2 drainage density are limited to the spatial distribution of depressions. In the central section of the study area at the anticlinal surface, maximum density (99 depressions/km2) is reached between elevations of 1930 and 2080 m. The physical and physicochemical properties of thermal muds (peloids) from 20 spas in Turkey were defined and compared with those of naturally pure clay minerals, smectite, illite, sepiolite, and kaolinite, to define the suitability of their use in pastes, masks, creams, and/or mud baths. The liquid and plastic limit values of the peloids show medium to high plasticity. The values of the pure clay minerals vary from 110 to 369 and 60 to 130, respectively, being higher than those of the peloid samples except for illite and kaolinite. This paper proposes an interpretation of the Bouguer gravity and magnetic anomaly map of the Yozgat Batholith and its surrounding area (north central Anatolia) for determination of crustal and geothermal structures. In the study area, the Moho and Conrad depths based on a relationship between Bouguer gravity anomaly and seismically determined crustal thickness were estimated as 34-39 km and 19.5-21.5 km, respectively. The crustal thickness of the study area increases from west to east. Several outcrops of spectacular feather-like hornblende aggregates occur in the phyllites of the Gol-e-Gohar complex (southeast of Iran) and form special Garbenschiefer rock types. The Gol-e-Gohar complex, as a part of the southern Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic zone, contains a succession of metabasites, phyllites, and slates intruded by dioritic intrusions. There are two types of hornblendes in the phyllites; the first one is concentrated around the fractures and the second one is randomly distributed in the rocks and forms radial feather-like hornblende aggregates. Near infrared hyperspectral imaging has been applied to grape seeds in order to select a representative subset of samples according to their spectral features in the 900-1700nm range. Afterwards, selected grape seeds have been classified according to their total phenol and flavanol extractabilities. In this way, samples were sorted in three different groups identified as low, medium and high extractability levels. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from peripheral blood account genetic information for cancer diagnosis and overall disease monitoring. Analysis of “liquid biopsy” holds immense promise as it may lead to new approaches for cancer treatment. The study reports effective and continuous flow microchannel system for isolating CTCs using transferrin conjugated 3D matrix synthesized by crosslinking polyethylene glycol-Fe3O4 nanostructures for rapid and efficient capturing of CTCs. This study investigates the use of a weight of evidence (WOE) approach to evaluate fish health status and biological effects (BEs) of contaminants for assessment of ecosystem health and discusses its potential application in support of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Oral vaccines present an attractive alternative to injectable vaccines for enteric diseases due to ease of delivery and the induction of intestinal immunity at the site of infection. An all-fiber magnetic field sensor based on whispering-gallery modes (WGM) in a fiber micro-resonator infiltrated with ferronematic liquid crystal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. We report the observation of an electro-optical effect for a linear rotation of the optical axis as function of the electric field in an achiral tilted bent-core liquid crystalline compound, in which 4-cyanoresorcinol bisbenzoate core is symmetrically terminated by long linear alkyl chains (n =16) on both ends. The linear electro-optic effect observed in this material is similar to the deformed helical ferroelectric liquid crystal (DHFLC) effect reported previously in a FLC material except that dimensions of the helical pitch differ by two orders of magnitude. Silviculture practices interact with multiple sources of variability to influence regeneration trends in northern hardwood forests. There is uncertainty whether low-intensity selection harvesting techniques will result in desirable tree regeneration. Our research is part of a long-term study that tests the hypothesis that a silvicultural approach called "structural complexity enhancement" (SCE) can promote accelerated development of late-successional forest structure and functions. Since their discovery in Yellowstone Lake in 1994, Lake Trout (Salvelinus namaycush) have been the object of an intensive gillnet suppression program due to their predation on native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri). Managers are also interested in targeting early life stages to augment suppression. A benthic sled was used to sample for Lake Trout eggs at 24 locations, hypothesized to be spawning sites, that encompassed a range of depths, slopes, and substrate composition to determine the location and characteristics of spawning sites in Yellowstone Lake.
