The Viability Of Advantg Deterministic Method For Synthetic Radiography Generation, Andrew Albert Bingham Jan 2017

The Viability Of Advantg Deterministic Method For Synthetic Radiography Generation, Andrew Albert Bingham

Masters Theses

"Time sensitive and high resolution image simulations are needed for synthetic radiography generation. The standard stochastic approach requires lengthy run times with poor statistics at higher resolutions. The investigation of the viability of a deterministic approach to synthetic radiography image generation was explored. The aim was to analyze a computational time decrease over the stochastic method. ADVANTG was compared to MCNP in multiple scenarios including a Benchtop CT prototype, to simulate high resolution radiography images. By using ADVANTG deterministic code to simulate radiography images the computational time was found to decrease over 10 times compared to the MCNP stochastic approach"--Abstract, …

Provenance And Depositional Environments Of Fluvial-Lacustrine Deposits In A Non-Marine Rift Basin, Lower-Triassic Jiucaiyuan And Shaofanggou Low-Order Cycles Bogda Shan, Nw China, Jaimeson Grigaitis Fredericks Jan 2017

Provenance And Depositional Environments Of Fluvial-Lacustrine Deposits In A Non-Marine Rift Basin, Lower-Triassic Jiucaiyuan And Shaofanggou Low-Order Cycles Bogda Shan, Nw China, Jaimeson Grigaitis Fredericks

Masters Theses

"The uppermost Carboniferous to Lower Triassic eolian-fluvial-lacustrine deposits of Turpan-Junggar Basin, NW China, record the non-marine sediment-filling processes in a continental rift basin in mid-latitude NE Pangea. This study focuses on the fluvial-lacustrine strata of the Lower Triassic Jiucaiyuan (JCY) and Shaofanggou (SFG) low-order cycles (LCs) in multiple half grabens at the southern and northern foothills of Bogda Shan. Outcrop, paleocurrent, and petrographic analyses indicate a southern provenance. Intermediate to felsic volcanic lithics and metamorphic lithics are interpreted as being derived from Tian Shan to the south while the sedimentary lithics originate from the local rift shoulders. The basaltic lithics …

A New Reinforcement Learning Algorithm With Fixed Exploration For Semi-Markov Decision Processes, Angelo Michael Encapera Jan 2017

A New Reinforcement Learning Algorithm With Fixed Exploration For Semi-Markov Decision Processes, Angelo Michael Encapera

Masters Theses

"Artificial intelligence or machine learning techniques are currently being widely applied for solving problems within the field of data analytics. This work presents and demonstrates the use of a new machine learning algorithm for solving semi-Markov decision processes (SMDPs). SMDPs are encountered in the domain of Reinforcement Learning to solve control problems in discrete-event systems. The new algorithm developed here is called iSMART, an acronym for imaging Semi-Markov Average Reward Technique. The algorithm uses a constant exploration rate, unlike its precursor R-SMART, which required exploration decay. The major difference between R-SMART and iSMART is that the latter uses, in addition …

Understanding Climatic Adjustments To Variations In Tropical Ocean Heat Transport, Michael Cameron Rencurrel Jan 2017

Understanding Climatic Adjustments To Variations In Tropical Ocean Heat Transport, Michael Cameron Rencurrel

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

One of the outstanding problems within the climate community has been how to reconcile the geological proxy records of past warm, equable climates, characterized by both an increase in the global mean surface temperature and a decrease in the equator-to-pole temperature gradient, with numerical simulations of the same period. Recent work has shown that tectonic driven changes in the meridional ocean heat transport (OHT) may have played a signicant role in the warming. Here, we study the adjustment of the climate to variations in OHT using a suite of slab-ocean aquaplanet GCM simulations spanning 24 different imposed variations in OHT …

Complex Valued Graphs For Soft Computing, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K Jan 2017

Complex Valued Graphs For Soft Computing, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, Ilanthenral K

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book authors for the first time introduce in a systematic way the notion of complex valued graphs, strong complex valued graphs and complex neutrosophic valued graphs. Several interesting properties are defined, described and developed. Most of the conjectures which are open in case of usual graphs continue to be open problems in case of both complex valued graphs and strong complex valued graphs. We also give some applications of them in soft computing and social networks. At this juncture it is pertinent to keep on record that Dr. Tohru Nitta was the pioneer to use complex valued graphs …

Cycle Bases Of Reduced Powers Of Graphs, Richard H. Hammack, Gregory Smith Jan 2017

Cycle Bases Of Reduced Powers Of Graphs, Richard H. Hammack, Gregory Smith

Arts & Sciences Articles

We define what appears to be a new construction. Given a graph G and a positive integer k, the reduced kth power of G, denoted G(k), is the configuration space in which k indistinguishable tokens are placed on the vertices of G, so that any vertex can hold up to k tokens. Two configurations are adjacent if one can be transformed to the other by moving a single token along an edge to an adjacent vertex. We present propositions related to the structural properties of reduced graph powers and, most significantly, provide …

Improving Survey Methodology To Monitor Rare Grassland Birds In South Dakota, Kassondra Hendricks Jan 2017

Improving Survey Methodology To Monitor Rare Grassland Birds In South Dakota, Kassondra Hendricks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data for grassland bird species has shown the most rapid population decline of any other bird group. Current roadside survey techniques, however, may fall short of providing accurate numbers of rare grassland bird species such as chestnut-collared longspur (Calcarius ornatus), lark bunting (Calamospiza melanocorys), Sprague’s pipit (Anthus spragueii), and Baird’s sparrow (Ammodramus bairdii). Trends resulting from roadside data for grassland birds are oftentimes determined to be statistically insignificant because many grassland bird species occur on too few routes, occur in low numbers per route, and show high annual fluctuations in number. It is possible roadside surveys …

Approximate Statistical Solutions To The Forensic Identification Of Source Problem, Danica M. Ommen Jan 2017

Approximate Statistical Solutions To The Forensic Identification Of Source Problem, Danica M. Ommen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Currently in forensic science, the statistical methods for solving the identification of source problems are inherently subjective and generally ad-hoc. The formal Bayesian decision framework provides the most statistically rigorous foundation for these problems to date. However, computing a solution under this framework, which relies on a Bayes Factor, tends to be computationally intensive and highly sensitive to the subjective choice of prior distributions for the parameters. Therefore, this dissertation aims to develop statistical solutions to the forensic identification of source problems which are less subjective, but which retain the statistical rigor of the Bayesian solution. First, this dissertation focuses …

U-Statistics For Characterizing Forensic Sufficiency Studies, Cami Fuglsby Jan 2017

U-Statistics For Characterizing Forensic Sufficiency Studies, Cami Fuglsby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the main metrics for deciding if a given forensic modality is useful across a broad spectrum of cases, within a given population, is the Random Match Probability (RMP), or the corresponding discriminating power. Traditionally, the RMP of a given modality is studied by comparing full `templates' and estimating the rate at which pairs of templates 'match' in a given population. This strategy leads to a natural U-statistic of degree two. However, in questioned document examination, the RMP is studied as a function of the amount of handwriting contained in the two documents being compared; turning the U-statistic into …

On Zero-Sum Rado Numbers For The Equation Ax_1 + X_2 = X_3, Nicholas Brown Jan 2017

On Zero-Sum Rado Numbers For The Equation Ax_1 + X_2 = X_3, Nicholas Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For every positive integer $a$, let $n = R_{ZS}(a)$ be the least integer, provided it exists, such that for every coloring \[ \Delta : \{1, 2, ..., n\} \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2\},\] there exist three integers $x_1, x_2, x_3$ (not necessarily distinct) such that \[ \Delta(x_1) + \Delta(x_2) + \Delta(x_3) \equiv 0\ (mod\ 3) \] and \[ ax_1 +x_2 = x_3.\] If such an integer does not exist, then $R_{ZS}(a) = \infty.$ The main results of this paper are \[R_{ZS}(2) = 12\] and a lower bound is found for $R_{ZS}(a)$ where $a \geq 2$.

Threshold Models For Genome-Wide Association Mapping Of Familial Breast Cancer Incidence In Humans, Nasir Elmesmari Jan 2017

Threshold Models For Genome-Wide Association Mapping Of Familial Breast Cancer Incidence In Humans, Nasir Elmesmari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is the second most fatal cancer in the world and one of the most highly harmful cancers from which people suffer. Breast cancer studies have been able to uncover some knowledge about genetic susceptibility for familial breast cancer in humans. Hence, determining genetic factors may potentially help track the disease, as well as discover the cancer in early stages, or perhaps before it starts. In addition, this may allow early determination of possible treatment strategies which will make it easier to prevent the disease. In this context, it is important to determine whether the heritability of breast cancer …

Measuring Aquatic Organism Responses To Grassland Restoration: Does The Field Of Dreams Really Exist?, David A. Schumann Jan 2017

Measuring Aquatic Organism Responses To Grassland Restoration: Does The Field Of Dreams Really Exist?, David A. Schumann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Landscape homogenization and the degradation of riparian areas has greatly impaired stream ecosystems throughout North America. Conservation programs may repair riparian ecosystems to indirectly improve water quality and instream habitat heterogeneity in hopes to elicit biological responses. However, focused manipulations on isolated stream fragments have rarely achieved biological goals. Prairie streams with restored riparian areas were appraised (chemical, physical, and biological variables) to quantify the indirect effects of prevalent grassland conservation practices on aquatic resources. Riparian rehabilitation, via passive methods, promoted bank-stabilizing vegetation along all conservation stream reaches. Riparian vegetation and function quickly recovered from previous agricultural disturbances at conservation …

Non-Hermiticity-Induced Flat Band, Hamidreza Ramezani Jan 2017

Non-Hermiticity-Induced Flat Band, Hamidreza Ramezani

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

We demonstrate the emergence of an entire flat band with no complex component embedded in dispersive bands at the exceptional point of a PT -symmetric photonic lattice. For this to occur, the gain and loss parameter effectively alters the size of the partial flat band windows and band gap of the photonic lattice simultaneously. The mode associated with the entire flat band is robust against changes in the system size and survives even at the edge of the lattice. Our proposal offers a route for controllable localization of light in non-Hermitian systems and a technique for measuring non-Hermiticity via localization.

Introducing A Theory Of Neutrosophic Evolution: Degrees Of Evolution, Indeterminacy, And Involution, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2017

Introducing A Theory Of Neutrosophic Evolution: Degrees Of Evolution, Indeterminacy, And Involution, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

During the process of adaptation of a being (plant, animal, or human), to a new environment or conditions, the being partially evolves, partially devolves (degenerates), and partially is indeterminate i.e. neither evolving nor devolving, therefore unchanged (neutral), or the change is unclear, ambiguous, vague, as in neutrosophic logic. Thank to adaptation, one therefore has: evolution, involution, and indeterminacy (or neutrality), each one of these three neutrosophic components in some degree. The degrees of evolution/indeterminacy/involution are referred to both: the structure of the being (its body parts), and functionality of the being (functionality of each part, or inter-functionality of the parts …

Infrared And Thermal-Desorption Spectroscopy Of H2 And D2 In Metal Organic Frameworks, Kai Shinbrough Jan 2017

Infrared And Thermal-Desorption Spectroscopy Of H2 And D2 In Metal Organic Frameworks, Kai Shinbrough

Honors Papers

In this thesis we provide an introduction to the use of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for hydrogen storage and for the separation of hydrogen isotopologues, H2 and D2. MOFs are a class of materials comprised of `building-block’ metal-oxide clusters connected by organic ligands, which have the capacity to adsorb molecules such as hydrogen through weak, physisorptive mechanisms. We provide some background on the quantum mechanical structure of hydrogen isotopologues, the structure of a few state-of-the-art MOFs, the quantum mechanics of infrared spectroscopy, and the desorption dynamics of adsorbates generally. We provide a description of the experimental apparatus and procedure used in …

Improving The Sensitivity Of A Pulsar Timing Array: Correcting For Interstellar Scattering Delays, Jacob E. Turner Jan 2017

Improving The Sensitivity Of A Pulsar Timing Array: Correcting For Interstellar Scattering Delays, Jacob E. Turner

Honors Papers

The NANOGrav collaboration aims to detect low frequency gravitational waves by measuring the arrival times of radio signals from pulsars. A confirmation of such a gravitational wave signal requires timing tens of pulsars with a precision of better than 100 nanoseconds for around 10 – 25 years. A crucial component of the success of pulsar timing relies on understanding how the interstellar medium affects timing accuracy. Current pulsar timing models account only for the large-scale dispersion delays from the ISM. As a result, the relatively small-scale propagation effects caused by scattering are partially absorbed into the dispersion delay component of …

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Solar energy is the most abundant energy resource available and can be utilized for a variety of applications such as photovoltaics and promote chemical reactions. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are a class of photovoltaic cells that have been well studied for their low cost and environmentally friendly materials. Previous research focused on developing more efficient liquid phase solar cells, but little work has gone into solid state DSSCs. Moving towards the solid state would improve the lifetime of the cells, preventing leaking of electrolyte and corrosion of the electrode while potentially being a more scalable process for mass production, improving …

Lake Magadi And The Soda Lake Cycle: A Study Of The Modern Sodium Carbonates And Of Late Pleistocene And Holocene Lacustrine Core Sediments, Emma Mcnulty Jan 2017

Lake Magadi And The Soda Lake Cycle: A Study Of The Modern Sodium Carbonates And Of Late Pleistocene And Holocene Lacustrine Core Sediments, Emma Mcnulty

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The Magadi Basin, Kenya, within the East African Rift Valley, contains two closed-basin alkaline lakes, Lake Magadi and Nasikie Engida that now precipitate trona (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H2O) and nahcolite (NaHCO3). Observations of the conditions of modern trona and nahcolite deposition in the Magadi Basin form the basis of the “soda lake cycle”. This study aims to use the sedimentary structures of the modern sodium carbonates of Lake Magadi as an analogue for similar ancient deposits around the world, including the vast trona and nahcolite deposits of the Eocene Green River Formation. Lake Magadi has been evolving since 1.08 Ma within a well-known …
