Tracing Sediment Erosion In The Yangtze River Subaqueous Delta Using Magnetic Methods, Can Ge, Weiguo Zhang, Chenyin Dong, Feng Wang, Huan Feng, Jianguo Qu, Lizhong Yu

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We assessed the usefulness of magnetic properties for tracing sediment erosion in a deltaic environment. Surface and core sediments from the Yangtze River subaqueous delta were subjected to magnetic, granulometric, geochemical, and radionuclide analyses. Based on magnetic properties and particle size, the surface sediments can be divided into three groups. Groups I and II have a similar particle size distribution and geochemical composition, but the former has higher values of magnetic susceptibility (χ) and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM). We interpret Group I as consisting of modern sediments, while Group II represents previously buried sediments that have undergone significant reductive …

Wood Delights, Said Shakerin Nov 2017

Wood Delights, Said Shakerin

SOECS Exhibitions

I am an outsider to the world of crafts as I used to be an engineering educator before I was struck by a neuro-degenerative disease, but have always been interested in making things with my hands. I slowly make decorative objects from discarded or partially decayed wood. The process of creating something beautiful, especially from discarded materials, to share with others is truly therapeutic for me. A brief overview of my work follows.

The woods come from a variety of sources such as coastal driftwoods, trimmings from fruit trees in our backyard, fallen branches in our neighborhood during storms, old …

Convergence Analysis And Error Estimates For A Second Order Accurate Finite Element Method For The Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes System, Amanda E. Diegel, Cheng Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise Nov 2017

Convergence Analysis And Error Estimates For A Second Order Accurate Finite Element Method For The Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes System, Amanda E. Diegel, Cheng Wang, Xiaoming Wang, Steven M. Wise

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present a novel second order in time mixed finite element scheme for the Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes equations with matched densities. the scheme combines a standard second order Crank–Nicolson method for the Navier–Stokes equations and a modification to the Crank–Nicolson method for the Cahn–Hilliard equation. in particular, a second order Adams-Bashforth extrapolation and a trapezoidal rule are included to help preserve the energy stability natural to the Cahn–Hilliard equation. We show that our scheme is unconditionally energy stable with respect to a modification of the continuous free energy of the PDE system. Specifically, the discrete phase variable is shown …

Sudoku App: Model-Driven Development Of Android Apps Using Ocl?, Yoonsik Cheon, Aditi Barua

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Model driven development (MDD) shifts the focus of software development from writing code to building models by developing an application as a series of transformations on models including eventual code generation. Can the key ideas of MDD be applied to the development of Android apps, one of the most popular mobile platforms of today? To answer this question, we perform a small case study of developing an Android app for playing Sudoku puzzles. We use the Object Constraint Language (OCL) as the notation for creating precise models and translate OCL constraints to Android Java code. Our findings are mixed in …

Cardinal Characteristics And Countable Borel Equivalence Relations, Samuel Coskey, Scott Schneider Nov 2017

Cardinal Characteristics And Countable Borel Equivalence Relations, Samuel Coskey, Scott Schneider

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Boykin and Jackson recently introduced a property of countable Borel equivalence relations called Borel boundedness, which they showed is closely related to the union problem for hyperfinite equivalence relations. In this paper, we introduce a family of properties of countable Borel equivalence relations which correspond to combinatorial cardinal characteristics of the continuum in the same way that Borel boundedness corresponds to the bounding number . We analyze some of the basic behavior of these properties, showing, e.g., that the property corresponding to the splitting number coincides with smoothness. We then settle many of the implication relationships between the properties; …

Northwest Forest Plan The First 20 Years (1994-2013): Watershed Condition Status And Trend, Stephanie A. Miller, Sean N. Gordon, Peter Eldred, Ronald M. Beloin, Steve Wilcox, Mark Raggon, Heidi Andersen, Ariel Muldoon

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

We used two data sets to evaluate stream and upslope/riparian condition for sixth-field watersheds in each aquatic province within the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) area. The stream evaluation was based on stream sampling data collected from 2002 to the 2013 (214 watersheds) as part of an eight year repeating (rotating) sample design. We are currently halfway through our second rotation of stream sampling, and have repeated 110 watersheds since the second rotation began in 2009. The analysis presented in this report uses roughly half the number of watersheds as was originally intended by the sample design since re-visitation will not …

Synthetic Food Additives In Selected Beverages Sold In The Uae, Aysha Mohammed Aldhaheri

Biology Theses

The consumption of beverages is increasing around the world with the globalization of the food industry. Synthetic additives can cause a potential risk to human health when they are excessively consumed. Thus, it is important that the level of synthetic food additives do not exceed the CODEX standards and similar to authorized levels in United Arab Emirates (UAE) by Emirates Authority for Standards and Metrology (ESMA). The objectives of this thesis were to determine and analyze selected food additives in non-alcoholic beverages and to ensure that the quantified results comply with CODEX standards. The present research aimed at screening the …

An Active Galactic Nucleus Caught In The Act Of Turning Off And On, Julia M. Comerford, R Scott Barrows, Francisco Müller Sánchez, Rebecca Nevin, Jenny E. Greene, David Pooley, Daniel Stern, Fiona A. Harrison

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

We present the discovery of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) that is turning off and then on again in the z = 0.06 galaxy SDSS J1354+1327. This episodic nuclear activity is the result of discrete accretion events that could have been triggered by a past interaction with the companion galaxy that is currently located 12.5 kpc away. We originally targeted SDSS J1354+1327 because its Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectrum has narrow AGN emission lines that exhibit a velocity offset of 69 km s−1 relative to systemic. To determine the nature of the galaxy and its velocity-offset emission lines, we …

The Simulation, Design, And Fabrication Of Optical Filters, John-Michael Juneau

Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering

The purpose of this thesis is to create a model for designing optical filters and a method for fabricating the designed filters onto a multitude of substrates, as well as to find ways to optimize this process. The substrates that were tested were quartz, glass slides, polycarbonate, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This work will account for variations in the deposition process and substrate cleaning method, in order to optimize the performance of the final optical filter. Several different filters were simulated and then fabricated. These filters included 3, 5, and 7-layer Bragg reflectors, 11-layer narrowband filters, and some variations of …

Building Planner Commitment: Are California’S Sb 375 And Oregon’S Sb 1059 Models For Climate-Change Mitigation?, Keith Bartholomew, David Proffitt

TREC Final Reports

California’s Sustainable Communities and Climate Protection Act (SB 375) and the Oregon Sustainable Transportation Initiative (SB 1059) have made them the first states in the nation to try and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using the transportation-planning process. Evaluating how these pioneering laws have changed local planning processes – as well as plans themselves – in each state provides insight into the laws’ effectiveness at changing development patterns in a way that reduces GHG emissions, without waiting decades to see the effects in the built environment. Both states’ laws require metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) and the municipalities that comprise them …

Uncovering User-Triggered Privacy Leaks In Mobile Applications And Their Utility In Privacy Protection, Joo Keng Joseph Chan Nov 2017

Uncovering User-Triggered Privacy Leaks In Mobile Applications And Their Utility In Privacy Protection, Joo Keng Joseph Chan

Dissertations and Theses Collection

Mobile applications are increasingly popular, and help mobile users in many aspects of their lifestyle. Applications have access to a wealth of information about the user through powerful developer APIs. It is known that most applications, even popular and highly regarded ones, utilize and leak privacy data to the network. It is also common for applications to over-access privacy data that does not fit the functionality profile of the application. Although there are available privacy detection tools, they might not provide sufficient context to help users better understand the privacy behaviours of their applications. In this dissertation, I present the …

Evidence For Isospin Violation And Measurement Of C P Asymmetries In B → K ∗ ( 892 ) Γ, T. Horiguchi Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty Articles

We report the first evidence for isospin violation in B→K∗γ and the first measurement of the difference of CP asymmetries between B+→K*+γ and B0→K*0γ. This analysis is based on the data sample containing 772×106B¯B pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric e+e− collider. We find evidence for the isospin violation with a significance of 3.1σ, Δ0+=[+6.2±1.5(stat)±0.6(syst)±1.2(f+−/f00)]%, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the fraction of B+B− to B0¯B0 production in Υ(4S) decays. The measured value is consistent with predictions of the standard model. The result for the difference of CP asymmetries …

Measurement Of The Decays B → Η ℓ Ν ℓ And B → Η ′ ℓ Ν ℓ In Fully Reconstructed Events At Belle, C. Beleño Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty Articles

We report branching fraction measurements of the decays B+→ηℓ+νℓ and B+→η′ℓ+νℓ based on 711 fb−1 of data collected near the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. This data sample contains 772 million B¯B events. One of the two Bmesons is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. Among the remaining (“signal-B”) daughters, we search for the η meson in two decay channels, η→γγ and η→π+π−π0, and reconstruct the η′meson in η′→ηπ+π− with subsequent decay of the η into γγ. Combining the two η modes and using an extended maximum likelihood, the B+→ηℓ+νℓ branching fraction …

Mediation Of Eutrophication Of Surface And Subsurface Water From Non-Point Sources: Nutrient Monitoring At Meadowbrook Farm (Madison County, Kentucky), Walter S. Borowski, Jonathan M. Malzone

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Non-point sources from various human activities such as farming have replaced industrial point sources as contributors of many contaminants in surface and subsurface waters of the United States. Eastern Kentucky University’s Meadowbrook Farm (720 acres, ~2.9 km2; Madison County, Kentucky) is a teaching facility dedicated to improving farming techniques and discovering best practices for farm operations that include minimizing environmental impacts. Agricultural activities on the Farm contribute nutrients to the Muddy Creek (Kentucky River) watershed that promote eutrophication and degrade water quality. Farm management already uses protocols to mediate drainage of dissolved nitrogen off the Farm, but also …

Intent Recognition In Smart Living Through Deep Recurrent Neural Networks, Xiang Zhang, Lina Yao, Chaoran Huang, Quan Z. Sheng, Xianzhi Wang Nov 2017

Intent Recognition In Smart Living Through Deep Recurrent Neural Networks, Xiang Zhang, Lina Yao, Chaoran Huang, Quan Z. Sheng, Xianzhi Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Electroencephalography (EEG) signal based intent recognition has recently attracted much attention in both academia and industries, due to helping the elderly or motor-disabled people controlling smart devices to communicate with outer world. However, the utilization of EEG signals is challenged by low accuracy, arduous and time-consuming feature extraction. This paper proposes a 7-layer deep learning model to classify raw EEG signals with the aim of recognizing subjects’ intents, to avoid the time consumed in pre-processing and feature extraction. The hyper-parameters are selected by an Orthogonal Array experiment method for efficiency. Our model is applied to an open EEG dataset provided …

Teaching Stats For Data Science, Daniel Kaplan Nov 2017

Teaching Stats For Data Science, Daniel Kaplan

Faculty Publications

“Data science” is a useful catchword for methods and concepts original to the field of statistics, but typically being applied to large, multivariate, observational records. Such datasets call for techniques not often part of an introduction to statistics: modeling, consideration of covariates, sophisticated visualization, and causal reasoning. This article re-imagines introductory statistics as an introduction to data science and proposes a sequence of 10 blocks that together compose a suitable course for extracting information from contemporary data. Recent extensions to the mosaic packages for R together with tools from the “tidyverse” provide a concise and readable notation for wrangling, visualization, …

Drone technology is beginning to permeate many aspects of life in the modern world, and for good reason. Delivery drones can efficiently deliver packages better than any existing methods. Medical drones can reach emergency patients faster than any ambulance. Security drones can surveil areas more quickly and more thoroughly than a team of human guards. The advent of commercial and industrial uses for drones, however, begets the vital question of how can drones be used outside the workplace. Intel's answer? Entertainment.

Thus, the Intel Shooting StarTM drone was born, a quadcopter explicitly built for producing breathtaking aerial light shows …
