Arts-Based Education For Enchanting, Embodied And Embedded Sustainability, Hans Dieleman Oct 2017

Arts-Based Education For Enchanting, Embodied And Embedded Sustainability, Hans Dieleman

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This article sketches two contrasting ideal-typical narratives of sustainability, a disenchanting and an enchanting one, and argues that current thinking in sustainability is mainly situated in the narrative of disenchantment. This narrative is based on various obsolete philosophical assumptions, and hampers the transformation process, as it distances the population from being part of this. It then sketches the narrative of enchanting sustainability and shows how this has the capacity to engage, intrigue and motivate people to be involved. It is rooted in an arts-based approach of connecting aesthetics, associative thinking, reflective practice, emotion-based working, aspiration and intentionality. The article moves …

Due to the good electrical conductivity, high specific surface area, and excellent chemical/mechanical stability, carbon nanomaterials with two-dimensional morphology have gradually become the hot topic of the research on supercapacitors. Herein, we report for the first time the fabrication of nitrogen doped carbon sheets (NCSs). In our approach, the sheet-like magnisum aluminum (MgAl) layered double hydroxide was used as the hard template, which was mixed with o-phenylene diamine and iron chloride. The following thermal treatment could render the polymerization and carbonization of o-phenylene diamine. The NCSs with ordered hexagonal architectures were formed by final etching process of the thermally treated …

Electrochemical Capacitors Based On Anion-Graphite Intercalation Compounds, Hong-Yu Wang, Hui Fan, Xiao-Hong Wang, Li Qi

Journal of Electrochemistry

Anions can be electrochemically intercalated into a graphite electrode with a reversible capacity as high as 120 mAh·g-1 at the high potential near 5 V vs. Li/Li+. Besides, graphite is environmentally benign, economic and abundant in China. Therefore, graphite is a very promising positive electrode material for asymmetric capacitors using non-aqueous electrolytes. However, the performance of graphite positive electrode is quite sensitive to various affecting factors, such as the compositions of electrolyte solutions, graphite type and ambient temperature, and so on. In the platform of activated carbon/graphite capacitors, the electrochemical behavior of anion-graphite intercalation compounds can be …

Special Issue On Supercapacitors, Xiao-Gang Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Supercapacitors (SCs) have become a new bright spot in electrochemical power source due to their high power density, long cycling life and wide operation temperature. As the high-power density energy storage devices, SCs have been widely applied in electric vehicle, modern communication, aerospace, defense, and many other emerging fields. The markets for SCs are continuously increasing. However, the commercialization of SCs suffers from a lower energy density and higher cost. Thus, one great challenge for the supercapacitor (SC) technology is to improve the energy density without sacrificing the power density and cycle life. To address this critical issue, the worldwide …

Superconductivity At Т≈200 K In Bismuth Cuprates Synthesized Using Solar Energy, J. Chigvinadze, Juana Acrivos, S. Ashimov, D. Gulamova, G. Donadze Oct 2017

Superconductivity At Т≈200 K In Bismuth Cuprates Synthesized Using Solar Energy, J. Chigvinadze, Juana Acrivos, S. Ashimov, D. Gulamova, G. Donadze

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

When investigating low-frequency (0.1 Hz) oscillations of multiphase high-temperature cuprate superconductors (HTCS) Bi1,7Pb0,3Sr2Ca(n-1)CunOy (n=2-30), a wide attenuation peak (ΔT~100 К) with a maximum at Т≈200 К was detected. This peak was particularly pronounced in field cooling (FC) experiments, i.e. after abrupt cooling of the sample in the external magnetic field at the temperature Т<Тс with subsequent slow warming up to room temperature with invariance of the applied field. The attenuation peak height depended on the preliminaryorientation (before cooling) of the samples θ in the measured permanent magnetic field Н. On the one hand, it is well known that, after the FC procedure and subsequent slow warming up, at the temperatures close to the critical temperature Тс, the attenuation peak associated with “melting” of the Abrikosov frozen vortex structure and its disappearance at Т >Тс is detected in monophase samples. At the same time, in most multiphase bismuth HTCS samples, synthesized using solar energy and superfast quenching of the melt, the attenuation peak with the maximum at Т≈200 К was observed.Depending on the conditions of synthesis, the attenuation peak could …

Junction Trees Constructions In Bayesian Networks, Linda Smail Oct 2017

Junction Trees Constructions In Bayesian Networks, Linda Smail

All Works

© Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd. Junction trees are used as graphical structures over which propagation will be carried out through a very important property called the ruining intersection property. This paper examines an alternative method for constructing junction trees that are essential for the efficient computations of probabilities in Bayesian networks. The new proposed method converts a sequence of subsets of a Bayesian network into a junction tree, in other words, into a set of cliques that has the running intersection property. The obtained set of cliques and separators coincide with the junction trees obtained by the …

Software Metrics And Dashboard, Shilpika Shilpika, George K. Thiruvathukal, Saulo Aguiar, Konstantin Läufer, Nicholas J. Hayward

Nicholas Hayward

Software metrics are a critical tool which provide continuous insight to products and processes and help build reliable software in mission critical environments. Using software metrics we can perform calculations that help assess the effectiveness of the underlying software or process. The two types of metrics relevant to our work is complexity metrics and in-process metrics. Complexity metrics tend to focus on intrinsic code properties like code complexity. In-process metrics focus on a higher-level view of software quality, measuring information that can provide insight into the underlying software development process.

Our aim is to develop and evaluate a metrics dashboard …

Towards Sustainable Digital Humanities Software, George K. Thiruvathukal, Shilpika Shilpika, Nicholas J. Hayward, Saulo Aguiar, Konstantin Läufer

Nicholas Hayward

Our work in software quality for digital humanities was borne of an effort to address sustainable practices in scientific software development, where the speaker (Thiruvathukal) co-authored a position paper on the case for software engineering in scientific software development as part of an all-encompassing strategy to create more sustainable scientific software (an example of a well-known scientific software package is LINPACK). In this position paper, we addressed how “progress in scientific research is dependent on the quality and accessibility of software at all levels". This progress depends on embracing the best traditional--and emergent--practices in software engineering, especially agile practices that …

The Crystal Structure Of Nitrosomonas Europaea Sucrose Synthase Reveals Critical Conformational Changes And Insights Into The Sucrose Metabolism In Prokaryotes, Rui Wu, Matías D. Asención Diez, Carlos M. Figueroa, Matías Machtey, Alberto A. Iglesias, Miguel Ballicora, Dali Liu

Miguel A Ballicora

In this paper we report the first crystal structure of a prokaryotic sucrose synthase from the non-photosynthetic bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea. The obtained structure was in an open form, whereas the only other available structure from the plant Arabidopsis thaliana was in a closed conformation. Comparative structural analysis revealed a “hinge-latch” combination, which is critical to transition between the open and closed forms of the enzyme. The N. europaea sucrose synthase shares the same fold as the GT-B family of the retaining glycosyltransferases. In addition, a triad of conserved homologous catalytic residues in the family showed to be functionally critical in …

Individual niche specialization (INS) is increasingly recognized as an important component of ecological and evolutionary dynamics. However, most studies that have investigated INS have focused on the effects of niche width and inter- and intraspecific competition on INS in small-bodied species for short time periods, with less attention paid to INS in large-bodied reptilian predators and the effects of available prey types on INS. We investigated the prevalence, causes, and consequences of INS in foraging behaviors across different populations of American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), the dominant aquatic apex predator across the southeast US, using stomach contents and stable isotopes. Gut …

Prediction Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Performance Using Artificial Neural Network, M. A. Rafe Biswas, Kamwana N. Mwara

M. A. Rafe Biswas

NASA’s Johnson Space Center has recently begun efforts to eventually integrate air-independent Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) systems, with landers that can be propelled by LOX-CH4, for long duration missions. Using landers that utilize such propellants, provides the opportunity to use SOFCs as a power option, especially since they are able to process methane into a reactant through fuel reformation. Various lead-up activities, such as hardware testing and computational modelling, have been initiated to assist with this developmental effort.
One modeling approach, currently being explored to predict SOFC behavior, involves the usage of artificial neural networks (ANN). Since SOFC performance …

Lack Of Attention To Singular (Or Atomic) Requirements Despite Benefits For Quality, Metrics And Management, William L. Honig, Shingo Takada, Natsuko Noda

William L Honig

There are seemingly many advantages to being able to identify, document, test, and trace single or “atomic” requirements. Why then has there been little attention to the topic and no widely used definition or process on how to define atomic requirements? Definitions of requirements and standards focus on user needs, system capabilities or functions; some definitions include making individual requirements singular or without the use of conjunctions. In a few cases there has been a description of atomic system events or requirements. This work is surveyed here although there is no well accepted and used best practice for generating atomic …
