Topics On Multiple Hypotheses Testing And Generalized Linear Model, Yalin Zhu
Topics On Multiple Hypotheses Testing And Generalized Linear Model, Yalin Zhu
Dissertations
In applications such as studying drug adverse events (AE) in clinical trials and identifying differentially expressed genes in microarray experiments, the data of the experiments usually consists of frequency counts. In the analysis of such data, researchers often face multiple hypotheses testing based on discrete test statistics. Incorporating this discrete property of the data, several stepwise procedures, which allow to use the CDF of p-values to determine the testing threshold, are proposed for controlling familiwise error rate (FWER). It is shown that the proposed procedures strongly control the FWER and are more powerful than the existing ones for discrete data. …
Roles Of Cosolvents On Protein Stability, Zhaoqian Su
Roles Of Cosolvents On Protein Stability, Zhaoqian Su
Dissertations
The function of a protein is determined by its three-dimensional structure which emerges from the delicate balance of forces involving atoms of the protein and the solvent. This balance can be perturbed by changing temperature, pressure, pH and by adding organic molecules known as cosolvents to the solution. Despite the wide use of cosolvents to perturb protein structures in the lab and in living systems, their molecular mechanisms are still not well established. Understanding these mechanisms is a problem of substantial interest, with potential application to the design of new drugs to target proteins. In this dissertation, we probe the …

Water is an essential resource for all life. Water sustains ecological processes that are important to the survival of fish, vegetation, wetlands, and birds. It contributes to humans by providing drinking water, irrigation, and also is an inspiration for recreational, cultural, and spiritual practices. Anthropogenic activities affect water quality in various ways, and a significant portion of the human population is currently experiencing water stress. The quality of water, as well as its social and economic value, share a positive relationship. Therefore, as water quality becomes degraded by pollution, the environmental, social, and economic value also decrease. The recognition of …
Annotation Of Multimedia Learning Materials For Semantic Search, Sheetal Rajgure
Annotation Of Multimedia Learning Materials For Semantic Search, Sheetal Rajgure
Dissertations
Multimedia is the main source for online learning materials, such as videos, slides and textbooks, and its size is growing with the popularity of online programs offered by Universities and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The increasing amount of multimedia learning resources available online makes it very challenging to browse through the materials or find where a specific concept of interest is covered. To enable semantic search on the lecture materials, their content must be annotated and indexed. Manual annotation of learning materials such as videos is tedious and cannot be envisioned for the growing quantity of online materials. One …

Dietary Transfer Of Heavy Metals In Manatees, E. M. Smith, Dimitri Giarikos, A. Daniels, Amy Hirons
Chemistry and Physics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
In recent decades, manatees and dugongs globally have exhibited potentially detrimental levels of a variety of heavy metals in their body tissues. The threatened Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris), which is a subspecies of the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), has shown corresponding high levels of heavy metals in their blood, skin, liver, and kidneys. As obligate herbivores, these animals rely heavily upon seagrasses as a major component of their diet. Globally, seagrasses at low latitudes have high levels of heavy metals in their tissues. Detrimental levels of heavy metals in Sirenians have not been established …

Rates And Causes Of Accidents For General Aviation Aircraft Operating In A Mountainous And High Elevation Terrain Environment, Marisa Aguiar, Alan Stolzer, Douglas D. Boyd
Publications
Flying over mountainous and/or high elevation terrain is challenging due to rapidly changeable visibility, gusty/rotor winds and downdrafts and the necessity of terrain avoidance. Herein, general aviation accident rates and mishap cause/factors were determined (2001–2014) for a geographical region characterized by such terrain.
Accidents in single piston engine-powered aircraft for states west of the US continental divide characterized by mountainous terrain and/or high elevation (MEHET) were identified from the NTSB database. MEHET-related-mishaps were defined as satisfying any one, or more, criteria (controlled flight into terrain/obstacles (CFIT), downdrafts, mountain obscuration, wind-shear, gusting winds, whiteout, instrument meteorological conditions; density altitude, dust-devil) cited …

Ruthenium Catalyzed Deaminative Coupling Reaction Of Amines Via C-N Bond Activation, Pandula T. Kirinde Arachchige
Master's Theses (2009 -)
C–N bond activation via transition-metal catalyst has attracted much attention during the past two decades. This strategy has become one of the most promising way to generate secondary amines, which are very important in a broad spectrum of applications in pharmaceutical industry, synthetic organic chemistry and material science. The secondary amines can be utilized as an important synthetic intermediate for further manipulations. The in-situ formed catalytic system generated from the tetranuclear Ru–H complex with 4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,2-benzenediol ligand was found to be effective for the synthesis of secondary amines from the direct deaminative coupling of amines. The ruthenium catalyst was highly effective …

Changes In Service And Associated Ridership Impacts Near A New Light Rail Transit Line, Jeongwoo Lee, Marlon Boarnet, Douglas Houston, Hilary Nixon, Steven Spears
Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning
Los Angeles (LA), for many years a city with limited rail transit, is substantially expanding its public transit system. This paradigm change in transportation policy and investment creates new requirements for monitoring. One area needing evaluation is whether new, high quality transit options, such as light rail, near existing transit services increase sustainable transportation mode shares and reduce car travel. Few studies have explored light rail’s role as a catalyst to increase overall transit use and achieve sustainability goals within an auto-oriented city like LA. Metro’s data show that trips taken on its bus and rail system dropped overall by …

The work done here is primarily a wrapper function written to separate some of the more difficult-to-use glpkAPI functionality from the end-user. The user, when prompted, selects the appropriate configuration of the .mod file to the task (for example, output-oriented CRS), and the data file, as a .dat. The function then loads the required glpkAPI library, and carries forward the model. It allocates the problem and workspace, reads the model file and data file the user selects, builds the problem, and solves it. The function returns primal values, and, if dual = TRUE is selected, also returns dual weights.
Elution Tailing Of Nonaqueous Phase Liquids In Porous Media, Louisa Orr
Elution Tailing Of Nonaqueous Phase Liquids In Porous Media, Louisa Orr
Civil and Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
A variety of porous media were studied to characterize contaminant dispersion over time. This work looked at a compilation of previously published studies to investigate the dependence of long term elution tailing trends on particular soil characteristics. Recession curve analysis was conducted on existing dispersed contaminant literature, to yield the low-concentration recession constant (K). The R2 values correlating the soil properties to contaminant concentration ranged from 0.12494 to 0.95429. The low-concentration recession constant (K) values ranged from 0.9745407 0.9999988. The relationship between K and the soil properties porosity, organic carbon, and fines fraction is increasing. Bulk density and the …

Power-Efficient And Highly Scalable Parallel Graph Sampling Using Fpgas, Usman Tariq, Umer Cheema, Fahad Saeed
Parallel Computing and Data Science Lab Technical Reports
Energy efficiency is a crucial problem in data centers where big data is generally represented by directed or undirected graphs. Analysis of this big data graph is challenging due to volume and velocity of the data as well as irregular memory access patterns. Graph sampling is one of the most effective ways to reduce the size of graph while maintaining crucial characteristics. In this paper we present design and implementation of an FPGA based graph sampling method which is both time- and energy-efficient. This is in contrast to existing parallel approaches which include memory-distributed clusters, multicore and GPUs. Our …

Teaching Image Processing And Visualization Principles To Medicine Students, Christina Gillmann, Thomas Wischgoll, Jose T. Hernandez, Hans Hagen
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Although image processing becomes increasingly important in most applications such as medicine, image processing and visualization is usually not a part of the medical education and therefore not widely spread in clinical daily routine. Contrary to students from computer science, medical students are usually not familiar to computational models or algorithms and require a different view of the algorithms instead of knowing each computational detail. To solve this problem this paper presents the concept of a lecture that aims to impart image processing and visualization principals for students in medicine in order to pioneer a higher acceptance and propagation of …
