Streaming Vr For Immersion: Quality Aspects Of Compressed Spatial Audio, Miroslaw Narbutt, Sean O’Leary, Andrew Allen, Jan Skoglund, Andrew Hines

Conference papers

Delivering a 360-degree soundscape that matches full sphere visuals is an essential aspect of immersive VR. Ambisonics is a full sphere surround sound technique that takes into account the azimuth and elevation of sound sources, portraying source location above and below as well as around the horizontal plane of the listener. In contrast to channel-based methods, ambisonics representation offers the advantage of being independent of a specific loudspeaker set-up. Streaming ambisonics over networks requires efficient encoding techniques that compress the raw audio content without compromising quality of experience (QoE). This work investigates the effect of audio channel compression via the …

A Comparative Assessment Of Projected Meteorological And Hydrological Droughts: Elucidating The Role Of Temperature, Ali Ahmadalipour, Hamid Moradkhani, Mehmet C. Demirel

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The changing climate and the associated future increases in temperature are expected to have impacts on drought characteristics and hydrologic cycle. This paper investigates the projected changes in spatiotemporal characteristics of droughts and their future attributes over the Willamette River Basin (WRB) in the Pacific Northwest U.S. The analysis is performed using two subsets of downscaled CMIP5 global climate models (GCMs) each consisting of 10 models from two future scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) for 30 years of historical period (1970–1999) and 90 years of future projections (2010–2099). Hydrologic modeling is conducted using the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) as a …

Investigation Of The Ozone Formation Reaction Pathway: Comparisons Of Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo And Fixed-Node Diffusion Monte Carlo With Contracted And Uncontracted Mrci, Andrew D. Powell, Nikesh S. Dattani, Rene F. K. Spada, Francisco B. C. Machado, Hans Lischka, Richard Dawes

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The association/dissociation reaction path for ozone (O2 + O ↔ O3) is notoriously difficult to describe accurately using ab initio electronic structure theory, due to the importance of both strong and dynamic electron correlations. Experimentally, spectroscopic studies of the highest lying recorded vibrational states combined with the observed negative temperature dependence of the kinetics of oxygen isotope exchange reactions confirm that the reaction is barrierless, consistent with the latest potential energy surfaces. Previously reported potentials based on Davidson-corrected internally contracted multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) suffer from a spurious reef feature in the entrance channel even when extrapolated …

Characterization Of The Ornithine Hydroxylation Step In Albachelin Biosynthesis, Kendra Bufkin, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

N-Hydroxylating monooxygenases (NMOs) are involved in siderophore biosynthesis. Siderophores are high affinity iron chelators composed of catechol and hydroxamate functional groups that are synthesized and secreted by microorganisms and plants. Recently, a new siderophore named albachelin was isolated from a culture of Amycolatopsis alba growing under iron-limiting conditions. This work focuses on the expression, purification, and characterization of the NMO, abachelin monooxygenase (AMO) from A. alba. This enzyme was purified and characterized in its holo (FAD-bound) and apo (FAD-free) forms. The apo-AMO could be reconstituted by addition of free FAD. The two forms of AMO hydroxylate ornithine, while lysine increases …

The AWRC Water Quality Lab analyzes water samples for a variety of constituents, using standard methods for the analysis of water samples (APHA 2012). Whether you have one or several water samples tested, the lab generates a report of values for each parameter that you have analyzed, which is provided to the client. Included with every water quality report is a Lab Quality Control (QC) report for each of the parameters analyzed within the package. The Lab …

Trust And Prior Experience In Human-Robot Interaction, Tracy Sanders, Keith Macarthur, William Volante, Gabriella Hancock, Thomas Macgillivray, William Shugars, Peter Hancock Oct 2017

Trust And Prior Experience In Human-Robot Interaction, Tracy Sanders, Keith Macarthur, William Volante, Gabriella Hancock, Thomas Macgillivray, William Shugars, Peter Hancock

EGS Content

This experiment explored the influence of users’ experience (prior interaction) with robots on their attitudes and trust toward robotic agents. Specifically, we hypothesized that prior experience would lead to 1) higher trust scores after viewing a robot complete a task, 2) smaller differences in trust scores when comparing a human and a robot completing the same task, and 3) more positive general attitudes towards robots. These hypotheses were supported although not all results achieved significant levels of differentiation. These findings confirm that prior experience plays an important role in both user trust and general attitude in human-robot interactions.

Random Walks On Digraphs, J.J.P. Veerman Oct 2017

Random Walks On Digraphs, J.J.P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let V = {1, · · · n} be a vertex set and S a non-negative row-stochastic matrix (i.e. rows sum to 1). V and S define a digraph G = G(V, S) and a directed graph Laplacian L as follows. If (S)ij > 0 (in what follows we will leave out the parentheses) there is a directed edge j → i. Thus the ith row of S identifies the edges coming into vertex i and their weights. This set of vertices are collectively the neighbors of i, and is denoted by Ni . The diagonal elements Sii are chosen such …

Johnson Creek Bacteria Tmdl Implementation: Status And Trend Analysis Study, John Gala Oct 2017

Johnson Creek Bacteria Tmdl Implementation: Status And Trend Analysis Study, John Gala

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

Like many other waterbodies in the United States, Johnson Creek, a tributary of the Lower Willamette River is water quality limited for bacteria. Escherichia coli (E. coli), a member of the fecal coliform bacteria group, has been found to have a high association with human pathogens and the occurrences of gastrointestinal illnesses in waters used for contact recreation; E. coli is commonly used as an indicator of fecal contamination. In the State of Oregon water contact recreational standards for fecal exposure is assessed by measuring in stream levels of E. coli. Because Johnson Creek is water quality …

Gw170817: Observation Of Gravitational Waves From A Binary Neutron Star Inspiral, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

On August 17, 2017 at 12-41:04 UTC the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detectors made their first observation of a binary neutron star inspiral. The signal, GW170817, was detected with a combined signal-to-noise ratio of 32.4 and a false-alarm-rate estimate of less than one per 8.0 x 104 years. We infer the component masses of the binary to be between 0.86 and 2.26 M, in agreement with masses of known neutron stars. Restricting the component spins to the range inferred in binary neutron stars, we find the component masses to be in the range 1.17-1.60 M …

A Nonlocal Application Of The Dispersive Optical Model To 208pb, Michael Keim Oct 2017

A Nonlocal Application Of The Dispersive Optical Model To 208pb, Michael Keim

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

A nonlocal application of the dispersive optical model to neutrons and protons in 208Pb is presented. A nucleon self-energy is described by parametrized real and imaginary parts connected through a dispersion relation. This parametrization includes nonlocal Hartree-Fock and spin-orbit and local Coulomb real terms, and nonlocal volume and surface and local spin-orbit imaginary terms. A simple Gaussian nonlocality is employed, and appropriate asymmetry parameters are included to describe the N-Z dependence of the nucleus. These parameters are constrained by fitting to experimental data, including particle numbers, energy levels, the charge density, elastic-scattering angular distributions, reaction cross sections, and the …

Characterization Of Military Aircraft Jet Noise Using Wavepacket Analysis And Other Array Processing Methods, Blaine M. Harker Oct 2017

Characterization Of Military Aircraft Jet Noise Using Wavepacket Analysis And Other Array Processing Methods, Blaine M. Harker

Theses and Dissertations

Sound generation and radiation properties are studied of full-scale tactical jet engine noise. This is motivated by the high sound exposure levels from jet noise, particularly for tactical engines. Acoustic source reconstruction methods are implemented computationally on existing jet noise data. A comparative study is performed using numerical simulations to understand the capabilities of more advanced beamforming methods to successfully estimate the source properties of a distributed, partially correlated source distribution. The properties and limitations of each beamforming method are described. Having validated the methods, beamforming with regularization”via the Hybrid Method”is implemented on linear array measurements near an installed tactical …

Modelling Parallel Overhead From Simple Run-Time Records, Siegfried Höfinger, Ernst Haunschmid Oct 2017

Modelling Parallel Overhead From Simple Run-Time Records, Siegfried Höfinger, Ernst Haunschmid

Michigan Tech Publications

A number of scientific applications run on current HPC systems would benefit from an approximate assessment of parallel overhead. In many instances a quick and simple method to obtain a general overview on the subject is regarded useful auxiliary information by the routine HPC user. Here we present such a method using just execution times for increasing numbers of parallel processing cores. We start out with several common scientific applications and measure the fraction of time spent in MPI communication. Forming the ratio of MPI time to overall execution time we obtain a smooth curve that can be parameterized by …

Multi-Messenger Observations Of A Binary Neutron Star Merger, Benjamin P. Abbott, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

On 2017 August 17 a binary neutron star coalescence candidate (later designated GW170817) with merger time 12:41:04 UTC was observed through gravitational waves by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor independently detected a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) with a time delay of ~1.7 s with respect to the merger time. From the gravitational-wave signal, the source was initially localized to a sky region of 31 deg2 at a luminosity distance of 40+ 8-8 Mpc and with component masses consistent with neutron stars. The component masses were later measured to be in …

Formalizing The Panarchy Adaptive Cycle With The Cusp Catastrophe, Martin Zwick, Joshua Hughes Oct 2017

Formalizing The Panarchy Adaptive Cycle With The Cusp Catastrophe, Martin Zwick, Joshua Hughes

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The panarchy adaptive cycle, a general model for change in natural and human systems, can be formalized by the cusp catastrophe of René Thom's topological theory. Both the adaptive cycle and the cusp catastrophe have been used to model ecological, economic, and social systems in which slow and small continuous changes in two control variables produce fast and large discontinuous changes in system behavior. The panarchy adaptive cycle, the more recent of the two models, has been used so far only for qualitative descriptions of typical dynamics of such systems. The cusp catastrophe, while also often employed qualitatively, is a …

The image resolution …

Analyzing Cyber Threats Affecting The Financial Industry, Anna Skelton Oct 2017

Analyzing Cyber Threats Affecting The Financial Industry, Anna Skelton

Student Works

As critical infrastructure, financial institutions must execute the highest level of cybersecurity as the threat of a crippling cyberattack continues to develop. Malicious actors, including disenfranchised employees, state sponsored actors, and traditional hackers, all have motivations to target the financial industry, and do so frequently. However, the threat changes slightly between resource rich large institutions and their smaller, community bank counterparts. The complex and multifaceted threat must be fully understood in order to properly address and analyze solution options to preserve the security of these institutions and the economy that they contribute to.

Simple Implementation Of An Elgamal Digital Signature And A Brute Force Attack On It, Valeriia Laryoshyna

Student Works

This study is an attempt to show a basic mathematical usage of the concepts behind digital signatures and to provide a simple approach and understanding to cracking basic digital signatures. The approach takes on simple C programming of the ElGamal digital signature to identify some limits that can be encountered and provide considerations for making more complex code. Additionally, there is a literature review of the ElGamal digital signature and the brute force attack.

The research component of this project provides a list of possible ways to crack the basic implementations and classifies the different approaches that could be taken …

Light-Induced Photochemical Changes In Copper(I) Thiocyanate Complexes Decorated With Halopyridines: Optical Memory Manifestation, Aaron D. Nicholas, Brooke M. Otten, Gerardo Ayala, Et Al., Robert D. Pike

Arts & Sciences Articles

We report on the photoluminescence of {CuSCN(3-XPy)2}n crystals (X = Br, Cl; Py = pyridine). Laser excitation at 266 nm for CuSCN(3-BrPy)2 at 78 K results in a decrease in the luminescence intensity with increasing irradiation time. Heating the sample to 298 K and recooling to 78 K results in recovery of the original luminescence intensity, hence manifesting an optical memory effect. Laser irradiation at longer or shorter wavelengths fails to produce a reduction in emission intensity. Interestingly, CuSCN(3-ClPy)2, despite being isomorphic, does not undergo emission intensity changes regardless of laser irradiation wavelength variation. Density functional theory (DFT) and …

The Double-Edged Sword: A Mixed Methods Study Of The Interplay Between Bipolar Disorder And Technology Use, Mark Matthews, Elizabeth Murnane, Jaime Snyder, Shion Guha, Pamara Chang, Gavin Doherty, Geri K. Gay

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Human behavior is increasingly reflected or acted out through technology. This is of particular salience when it comes to changes in behavior associated with serious mental illnesses including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Early detection is crucial for these conditions but presently very challenging to achieve. Potentially, characteristics of these conditions' traits and symptoms, at both idiosyncratic and collective levels, may be detectable through technology use patterns. In bipolar disorder specifically, initial evidence associates changes in mood with changes in technology-mediated communication patterns. However much less is known about how people with bipolar disorder use technology more generally in their lives, …

On Congruence Lattices Of Nilsemigroups, Alexander L. Popovich, Peter Jones Oct 2017

On Congruence Lattices Of Nilsemigroups, Alexander L. Popovich, Peter Jones

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We prove that the congruence lattice of a nilsemigroup is modular if and only if the width of the semigroup, as a poset, is at most two, and distributive if and only if its width is one. In the latter case, such semigroups therefore coincide with the nil Δ">Δ Δ -semigroups. It is further shown that if a finitely generated nilsemigroup has modular congruence lattice, then the semigroup is finite.

Metal Substitution And Solvomorphism In Alkylthiolate-Bridged Zn3 And Hgzn2 Metal Clusters, Madeline R. Hallinger, Alison C. Gerhard, Mikhaila D. Ritz, Et Al., John C. Poutsma, Robert D. Pike

Arts & Sciences Articles

The impact of substituting Hg(II) for Zn(II) in a thiolate-bridged trinuclear cluster with parallels to a metallothionein metal cluster was investigated. A new solvomorph of [Zn(ZnL)2](ClO4)2 (1) (L = N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-(2-(ethylthiolato)-amine) and five solvomorphs of a new compound [Hg(ZnL)2](ClO4)2 (2) were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The interplay of hydrogen bonding and aromatic-packing interactions in producing lamellar, 2D lamellar, and columnar arrangements of complex cations in the crystalline state is discussed. Both variable temperature proton nuclear magnetic resonance and electrospray ion-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) suggest that the complex ions of 1 and 2 are the predominant solution species at …

Imitating The Shazam App With Wavelets, Edward Aboufadel

Peer Reviewed Articles

With the Shazam smartphone app, a listener captures a short excerpt of a recorded song with the smartphone's microphone, and in a matter of moments the app reports the name of the song and the artist. Fourier analysis is a key mathematical tool that powers the app. In this paper, we describe a wavelet-based method that captures the basic process used by the Shazam app to search a database of number sequences (signals) to find those that are similar to a test signal. We will describe our implementation with a different source of signals: continuous glucose monitor data from the …
