Quantum oscillations in the binary antiferromagnetic metal FeAs are presented and compared to theoretical predictions for the electronic band structure in the anomalous spin density wave state of this material. Demonstrating a method for growing single crystals out of Bi flux, we utilize the highest quality FeAs to perform torque magnetometry experiments up to 35 T, using rotations of field angle in two planes to provide evidence for one electron and one hole band in the magnetically ordered state. The resulting picture agrees with previous experimental evidence for multiple carriers at low temperatures, but the exact Fermi surface shape differs …

The inclusive J/ψ transverse momentum spectra and nuclear modification factors are reported at midrapidity (|y| < 1.0) in Au + Au collisions at √sNN = 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV taken by the STAR experiment. A suppression of J/ψ production, with respect to the production in p + p scaled by the number of binary nucleon–nucleon collisions, is observed in central Au + Au collisions at these three energies. No significant energy dependence of nuclear modification factors is found within uncertainties. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization was used to produce polymers bearing an asymmetrically substituted boron difluoride 3-cyanoformazanate complex. The polymers were found to retain many of the unique characteristics of molecular boron difluoride complexes of 3-cyanoformazanates, including intense light absorption at ca. 560 nm and reversible electrochemical reductions implicating the radical anion and dianion forms of the formazanate complexes in the repeating unit of the polymer backbone. The polymers were also found to be emissive, with emission maxima centred at ca. 665 nm. The monomer employed in this study had a fluorescence quantum yield of 30%, while homopolymers were weakly emissive and …

It has been argued in the technical literature, and widely reported in the popular press, that cosmic ray air showers (CRASs) can initiate lightning via a mechanism known as relativistic runaway electron avalanche (RREA), where large numbers of high-energy and low-energy electrons can, somehow, cause the local atmosphere in a thundercloud to transition to a conducting state. In response to this claim, other researchers have published simulations showing that the electron density produced by RREA is far too small to be able to affect the conductivity in the cloud sufficiently to initiate lightning. The development of low-cost hybrid water splitting-biosynthetic systems that mimic natural photosynthesis to achieve solar-to-chemical conversion is of great promise for future energy demands, but often limited by the kinetically sluggish hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on the surface of nonprecious transition metal catalysts in neutral media. It is thus highly desirable to rationally tailor the reaction interface to boost the neutral HER catalytic kinetics. Herein, we report a general surface nitrogen modification of diverse transition metals (e.g. iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, and nickel-cobalt alloy), accomplished by a facile low-temperature ammonium carbonate treatment, for significantly improved hydrogen generation from neutral water. …

Coastal anthropogenic infrastructure has significantly modified nearshore environments. Because these structures often have a strong association with shipping as would be found in ports and harbors, they have been identified as invasion hotspots. Due to propagule pressure from shipping and recreational boating and suitable uncolonized substrate that provides a refuge from native predators, a greater number of non-native species have been found on these structures compared to nearby natural substrate. We report on a new experimental method based on initial-state radiation (ISR) in e-p scattering, which exploits the radiative tail of the elastic peak to study the properties of electromagnetic processes and to extract the proton charge form factor (G(E)(P)) at extremely small Q(2). The ISR technique was implemented in an experiment at the three-spectrometer facility of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). This led to a precise validation of radiative corrections far away from elastic line and provided first measurements of G(E)(P) for 0.001 <= Q(2) <= 0.004 (GeV/c)(2). (C) 2017 The Authors. A major component of the extracellular matrix is hyaluronan, a regulator of cell migration/survival and differentiation during response-to-injury processes. The receptor for hyaluronan-mediated motility (RHAMM) binds to HA and has limited constitutive expression but is upregulated during tissue injury. Blocking HA fragment:RHAMM interactions has therapeutic potential for treating cancer but truncation of RHAMM into peptides mimicking only the HA binding domains is predicted to lose their natural α-helical structure. Approximately 75% of new molecular entities approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the pharmaceutical industry are found to have poor aqueous solubility. This undesirable attribute leads to consequences such as higher doses required to reach therapeutic levels, greater vulnerability to food effects, lesser fraction absorbed in the small intestine and damage to the environment due to increased quantity of excretion. The blue hypergiant Cyg OB2 12 (B3Ia+) is a representative member of the class of very massive stars in a poorly understood evolutionary stage. We obtained its high-resolution X-ray spectrum using the Chandra observatory. PoWR model atmospheres were calculated to provide realistic wind opacities and to establish the wind density structure. We find that collisional de-excitation is the dominant mechanism depopulating the metastable upper levels of the forbidden lines of the He-like ions Si xivand Mg xii. Comparison between the model and observations reveals that X-ray emission is produced in a dense plasma, which could reside only at the photosphere …

The Computation and Modeling Engineering Laboratory (CaMEL), an implicit solver-based storm surge model, has been extended for use on high performance computing platforms. An MPI (Message Passing Interface) based parallel version of CaMEL has been developed from the previously existing serial version. CaMEL uses hybrid finite element and finite volume techniques to solve shallow water conservation equations in either a Cartesian or a spherical coordinate system and includes hurricane-induced wind stress and pressure, bottom friction, the Coriolis effect, and tidal forcing. We report an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy method that exploits the recent development of the two-pulse mode at the Linac Coherent Light Source. By using coherent resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, we studied spontaneous fluctuations on nanosecond time scales in thin films of multilayered Fe/Gd that exhibit ordered stripe and Skyrmion lattice phases. The correlation time of the fluctuations was found to differ between the Skyrmion phase and near the stripe-Skyrmion boundary. This technique will enable a significant new area of research on the study of equilibrium fluctuations in condensed matter.

This work examines several volume attributes extracted from 3D seismic data with the goal of seismic facies classification and lithology prediction in intraslope minibasins. The study area is in the Keathley Canyon protraction (KC), within the middle slope of the Northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM). It lays within the tabular salt and minibasins province downdip of the main Pliocene and Pleistocene deltaic depocenters. Interaction between sedimentation and mobile salt substrate lead to the emergence of many stratigraphic patterns in the intraslope minibasins. Most SCADA devices have a few built-in self-defence mechanisms and tend to implicitly trust communications received over the network. Therefore, monitoring and forensic analysis of network traffic is a critical prerequisite for building an effective defense around SCADA units. In this thesis work, We provide a comprehensive forensic analysis of network traffic generated by the PCCC(Programmable Controller Communication Commands) protocol and present a prototype tool capable of extracting both updates to programmable logic and crucial configuration information. Simulations help us test various restrictions/assumptions placed on physical systems that would otherwise be difficult to efficiently explore experimentally. For example, the Scallop Theorem, first stated in 1977, places limitations on the propulsion mechanisms available to microscopic objects in fluids. In particular, the theorem states that when the viscous forces in a fluid dominate the inertial forces associated with a physical body, such a physical body cannot generate propulsion by means of reciprocal motion. The work herein falls under the umbrella of mathematical modeling of disease transmission. The majority of this document focuses on the extent to which infection undermines the strength of a honey bee colony. These studies extend from simple mass-action ordinary differential equations models, to continuous age-structured partial differential equation models and finally a detailed agent-based model which accounts for vector transmission of infection between bees as well as a host of other influences and stressors on honey bee colony dynamics. The focus of this work is a family of maps from the space of $n \times n$ symmetric matrices, $S^n$, into the space $S^{{n \choose k}}$ for any $k=1,\ldots, n$, invariant under the conjugate action of the orthogonal group $O^n$. This family, called generated $k$-isotropic functions, generalizes known types of maps with similar invariance property, such as the spectral, primary matrix, isotropic functions, multiplicative compound, and additive compound matrices on $S^n$. An injection locked laser can jump out of lock if its current or temperature drifts. By monitoring the spectra or the amplitude of the injection locked laser, we have been able to detect drifts and apply feedback to prevent injection lock from breaking.

Searches are presented for heavy gauge bosons decaying into a top and a bottom quark in data collected by the CMS experiment at s=13 TeV that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 and 2.6 fb−1 in the leptonic and hadronic analyses, respectively. Two final states are analyzed, one containing a single electron, or muon, and missing transverse momentum, and the other containing multiple jets and no electrons or muons. No evidence is found for a right-handed W′ boson (W′R) and the combined analyses exclude at 95% confidence level W′R with masses below 2.4 TeV if MW′R≫MνR (mass of the …

This study presents the results of a single-grain optically stimulated luminescence (SG-OSL) analysis of brownware pottery from four Late Prehistoric-period sites in the Middle Rocky Mountains, Wyoming, USA. SG-OSL of quartz ceramic temper provides improved age control for sites where radiocarbon dating has proven problematic due to old wood, recent wildfires, and calibration uncertainties. SG-OSL results are compared to fine-grain infrared stimulated luminescence (FG-IRSL) results from the same sherds and associated radiocarbon ages. We find that the single-grain technique applied to quartz sand temper provides improved accuracy and precision over both FG-IRSL and radiocarbon. We compare our results to directly …

A momentum-dependent Coulomb factor in the probability for nonlinear ionization of atoms by a strong low-frequency laser field is calculated analytically in the adiabatic approximation. Expressions for this Coulomb factor, valid for an arbitrary laser pulse waveform, are obtained and analyzed in detail for the cases of linear and circular polarizations. The dependence of the Coulomb factor on the photoelectron momentum is shown to be significant in both cases. Using a similar technique, the Coulomb factor for emission of high-order harmonics by an atom in a bichromatic laser field is also calculated. In contrast to the case of a single-frequency …

Functionalizing arenes and heteroarenes has been an active area of research since the 19th century, due to the presence of these molecular structures in many industrially important sectors. A tremendous amount of research has been published in achieving these chemical transformations using stoichiometric reagents and transition metal-catalyzed reactions. However, challenges still remain. An alternative and comparable methodology to metal-catalyzed reactions to overcome the drawbacks will advance this particular area of research is desirable.
