We are writing the first open-source, general relativistic force-free electrodynamics code: GiRaFFE. The goal is to numerically simulate neutron star and black hole magnetospheres. The GiRaFFE is alive! It has passed a number of 1D code validation tests, and 3D tests are underway. We plan to release the code and test suite initial data routines open-source to the community.

Knowing the precise details of the gravitational wave signature obtained from numerical simulations of binary black hole mergers is a key requirement for meaningful detection and scientific interpretation of the data. However, the waveforms are not easy to be accurately computed. The importance of this problem to the future of gravitational wave astronomy is well recognized. Cauchy-Characteristic Extraction (CCE) is the most precise and refined extraction method available. Numerical Relativity is successful in the simulation of black holes and gravitational waves. In recent years, teams have tackled the problem of the interaction of gravitational and electromagnetic waves. We developed a new code for the numerical simulation of neutron and black hole magnetospheres, using the FFE formalism. We tested the performance of the new code named GiRaFFE, in 1D and 3D test suits. We will study magnetospheres, focusing on jets by the Blandford -Znajek mechanism.

Cauchy-characteristic extractions (CCE) avoids the errors due to extraction at finite worldtube. The Cauchy and the characteristic approaches have complementary strengths and weaknesses. Unification of the two methods is a promising way of combining the strengths of both formalisms.

The artificial finite outer boundary present in Cauchy codes introduce two sources of error: The outer boundary condition and waveform extraction at an inner worldtube. The problem of proper boundary condition for a radiating system can be solved only by extension to Ι+ (conformal compactification). Cauchy Characteristic Extraction (CCE) offers a means to avoid these errors.

Bondi (1962) proved mathematically the existence of gravitational waves at null infinity. He found an exact solution of Einstein equations. Within this metric, he calculated the loss of mass due to the emission of gravitational waves. The mas of a system is constant if and only if there is no news. If there is news, the mass decreases as long as there are news.

This study examines the productivity and resilience of agroecosystems in the Korean Peninsula. Having learned valuable lessons from a Chapman University project funded by the United States Department of Agriculture which concentrated on the semi-arid region of southwestern United States, our joint Korea—Chapman University team has applied similar methodologies to the Korean Peninsula, which is itself an interesting study case in the mid-latitude region. In particular, the Korean Peninsula has unique agricultural environments due to differences in political and socioeconomic systems between South Korea and North Korea. The invasive Burmese python (Python bivittatus) has been reproducing in the Florida Everglades since the 1980s. These giant constrictor snakes have caused a precipitous decline in small mammal populations in southern Florida following escapes or releases from the commercial pet trade. To better understand the invasion pathway and genetic composition of the population, two mitochondrial (mtDNA) loci across 1,398 base pairs were sequenced on 426 snakes and 22 microsatellites were assessed on 389 snakes. Concatenated mtDNA sequences produced six haplotypes with an average nucleotide and haplotype diversity of π = 0.002 and h = 0.097, respectively. Samples collected …

We have cross-matched the LAMOST DR3 with the Gaia DR1 TGAS catalogs and obtained a sample of 166,827 stars with reliable kinematics. A technique based on the wavelet transform was applied to detect significant overdensities in velocity space among five subsamples divided by spatial position. In total, 16 significant overdensities of stars with very similar kinematics were identified. Among these, four are new stream candidates and the rest are previously known groups. Both the U–V velocity and metallicity distributions of the local sample show a clear gap between the Hercules structure and the Hyades–Pleiades structure. The U– …

In this work we share the first account for the forensic analysis, security and privacy of Android vault applications. Vaults are designed to be privacy enhancing as they allow users to hide personal data but may also be misused to hide incriminating files. Our work has already helped law enforcement in the state of Connecticut to reconstruct 66 incriminating images and 18 videos in a single criminal case. We present case studies and results from analyzing 18 Android vault applications (accounting for nearly 220 million downloads from the Google Play store) by reverse engineering them and examining the forensic artifacts …

Consumer-grade camera systems are often employed in aerial remote sensing to provide insight into patterns and processes of interest to science and industry, a trend that has largely been encouraged by the rapid growth of the small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) industry. However, little research exists on the ability of these systems to accurately measure surface reflectance in specific wavebands, a crucial consideration for many remote sensing applications. The rapidly evolving dust and gas extinction observed towardsWD1145+017 has opened a real-time window onto the mechanisms for destruction-accretion of planetary bodies onto white dwarf stars, and has served to underline the importance of considering the dynamics of dust particles around such objects. Here it is argued that the interaction between (charged) dust grains and the stellar magnetic field is an important ingredient in understanding the physical distribution of infrared emitting particles in the vicinity of such white dwarfs. Nitrogen fertilizer rate is a key factor affecting soil organic C (SOC) in corn-based cropping systems. The objective of this study was to determine the change in SOC in response to long-term N rates for continuous corn and corn-soybean cropping systems at two sites in Iowa. Soil samples were collected to a depth of 15 cm in 1999 and again in 2014 after 15 years of corn N rate treatments ranging from 0 to 269 kg ha-1. The Lewis acid mediated Nicholas reaction of potassium alkynyltrifluoroborates and propargyl acetate- hexacarbonyldicobalt complexes affords 1,4-diyne dicobalt hexacarbonyl complexes in good yields. The analogous Nicholas reactions of potassium alkenyltrifluoroborates give 1,3-enyne dicobalt hexacarbonyl complexes in most cases, although the initial site of reaction can vary. Potassium vinyltrifluoroborate itself affords alkynylcyclopropane complexes.

Therefore, in order to address environmental problems it is important to understand the factors driving environmentally degrading behaviors and subsequently design behavioral interventions to alter undesirable behaviors.

Hunting regulations are assumed to moderate the effects of hunting consistently across a game population. A growing body of evidence suggests that hunter effort varies temporally and spatially, and that variation in effort at multiple spatial scales can affect game populations in unexpected ways. Magnetic materials are often categorized in terms of either a purely local or a purely itinerant picture despite the fact that the vast majority actually fall within a spectrum that ranges between these two extremes. Interfaces in solid materials are the so-called boundaries, separating crystals with the same structure and chemistry but different orientations, e.g. grain boundaries (GBs), different stacking sequences, e.g. stacking faults (SFs), or crystals with different structures and/or chemistries as well as orientations, e.g. the interface between substrate and thin film. In this study, first-principles calculations are used to investigate the defect behavior at different interfaces and in-plane strain fields, such as stacking fault (SF) in silicon carbide (SiC), in-plane strain field near interfaces in potassium tantalate (KTaO3), and grain boundary in ceria (CeO2).

Synthesis of select metal halides and oxyhalides are explored in the form of direct fluorination using a fluidized bed reactor system, direct chlorination using hydrogen chloride gas, and a degradation dehydration reaction as novel methods towards the synthesis of these select metal halides and oxyhalides. The flexibility of the direct fluorination technique is demonstrated by the ability to vary the degree of fluorination based on the reaction conditions of temperature, time, and fluorine concentration. This delicate balance of energy scales allows external stimuli such as temperature, magnetic field, or pressure to drive to novel phases. As a local probe technique, spectroscopy can provide insight into the microscopic mechanism of the phase transitions. Heavy flavor quarks are produced early in heavy ion collisions and will experience the full evolution of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). Measurements at forward rapidity may be influenced as much, or more, by the cold nuclear matter effects as by the hot nuclear matter effects associated with a QGP. As the medium evolves, the initial spatial anisotropy of participants is converted to an azimuthal anisotropy in the momentum space of outgoing particles. Therefore, the momentum spectra modification and anisotropy parameters provide useful information about the heavy quark interaction with the bulk medium.

The work in this dissertation focuses on the development of probes for the analysis of trace chemicals in samples with health and environmental impacts. A paper, Cu(copper)-based colorimetric probe was developed for the detection of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas. A modified Kipp’s apparatus was used to generate desired concentrations of H2S in a total volume of 1.35 L (liters). The probe shows a qualitative response down to 60 ppb (parts per billion), indicating its ability to be used in industrial settings as a replacement for the commonly used lead acetate strips. Polymeric materials possessing specific functionality have been designed for use in applications such as membranes, biocompatible coatings, lubricants, and tissue engineering. Because the chemical nature of the repeat units set the properties offered by the polymer, the ability to reactively modify polymer chains to integrate specific functionality expands the range of potential applications. The goal of the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experiment project, led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is to observe and assess ecological responses of peatland ecosystems to increased temperatures and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Control plots are maintained at ambient temperatures and/or CO2 concentrations. Treatments are applied in a full factorial design; plots are warmed to +2.25, +4.5, +6.75, and +9oC and exposed to an atmospheric CO2 concentration of 800 to 900 ppm. Fluoro-Decyl POSS (FDP) has shown strong potential as a water repellant surface coating. Additionally, Fomblin is a solvent believed to have the ability to control the crystallization of POSS compounds on surfaces. Controlling the crystallization is key to improving water repelling abilities of surfaces. Thus, dip coating FDP and Fomblin onto surfaces is being investigated for water repulsion, mechanical stability, and deposition feasibility. First, temperature dependence of solubility of Fluoro-Decyl POSS in Fomblin was tested using Dynamic Light Scattering. A fundamental concept frequently applied to statistical machine learning is the detection of dependencies between unknown random variables found from data samples. In previous work, we have introduced a nonparametric unilateral dependence measure based on Onicescu’s information energy and a kNN method for estimating this measure from an available sample set of discrete or continuous variables. This paper provides the formal proofs which show that the estimator is asymptotically unbiased and has asymptotic zero variance when the sample size increases. This course is mostly project- oriented with a dual focus on spreadsheet engineering and quantitative modeling of financial applications.
