The discovery of useful or worthwhile process models must be performed with due regards to the transformation that needs to be achieved. The blend of the data representations (i.e data mining) and process modelling methods, often allied to the field of Process Mining (PM), has proven to be effective in the process analysis of the event logs readily available in many organisations information systems. Moreover, the Process Discovery has been lately seen as the most important and most visible intellectual challenge related to the process mining. The method involves automatic construction of process models from event logs about any domain …
An Introduction To Lie Algebra, Amanda Renee Talley
An Introduction To Lie Algebra, Amanda Renee Talley
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
An (associative) algebra is a vector space over a field equipped with an associative, bilinear multiplication. By use of a new bilinear operation, any associative algebra morphs into a nonassociative abstract Lie algebra, where the new product in terms of the given associative product, is the commutator. The crux of this paper is to investigate the commutator as it pertains to the general linear group and its subalgebras. This forces us to examine properties of ring theory under the lens of linear algebra, as we determine subalgebras, ideals, and solvability as decomposed into an extension of abelian ideals, and nilpotency, …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The main aim of the course recommendation system is to build a course recommendation path for students to help them plan courses to successfully graduate on time. The Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture is used to isolate the user interface (UI) design from the business logic. The front-end of the application develops the UI using AngularJS. The front-end design is done by gathering the functionality system requirements -- input controls, navigational components, informational components and containers and usability testing. The back-end of the application involves setting up the database and server-side routing. Server-side routing is done using Express JS.

A Compact Representation Of Human Actions By Sliding Coordinate Coding, Runwei Ding, Qianru Sun, Mengyuan Liu, Hong Liu
A Compact Representation Of Human Actions By Sliding Coordinate Coding, Runwei Ding, Qianru Sun, Mengyuan Liu, Hong Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Human action recognition remains challenging in realistic videos, where scale and viewpoint changes make the problem complicated. Many complex models have been developed to overcome these difficulties, while we explore using low-level features and typical classifiers to achieve the state-of-the-art performance. The baseline model of feature encoding for action recognition is bag-of-words model, which has shown high efficiency but ignores the arrangement of local features. Refined methods compensate for this problem by using a large number of co-occurrence descriptors or a concatenation of the local distributions in designed segments. In contrast, this article proposes to encode the relative position of …

Identification Of Aspergillus Fumigatus Udp-Galactopyranose Mutase Inhibitors, Julia S.Martin Del Campo, Meital Eckshtain-Levi, Nancy J. Vogelaar, Pablo Sobrado
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Aspergillus fumigatus is an opportunistic human pathogen responsible for deadly, invasive infections in immunocompromised patients. The A. fumigatus cell wall is a complex network of polysaccharides among them galactofuran, which is absent in humans. UDP-galactopyranose mutase (UGM) catalyzes the conversion of UDP-galactofuranose (UDP-Galf) to UDP-galactopyranose (UDP-Galp) and is an important virulence factor. UGM is a flavin-dependent enzyme that requires the reduced flavin for activity; flavin reduction is achieved by reaction with NADPH. The aim of this work was to discover inhibitors of UGM by targeting the NADPH binding site using an ADP-TAMRA probe in a high-throughput screening assay. The flavonoids …

Transformation Of Nonlinear Waves In The Presence Of Wind, Current, And Vegetation, Haifei Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Accurate prediction of extreme wave events is crucial for the safe maritime activities and offshore operations. Improved knowledge of wave dissipation mechanisms due to breaking and vegetation leads to accurate wave forecast, protecting life and property along the coast. The scope of the thesis is to examine the wave transformations in the presence of wind, current, and vegetation, using a two-phase flow solver based on the open-source platform OpenFOAM. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are coupled with a Volume of Fluid (VOF) surface capturing scheme and a turbulence closure model. This RANS-VOF model is adapted to develop a numerical wind-wave-current …

We report results of a deep all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars in data from the first Advanced LIGO observing run. This search investigates the low frequency range of Advanced LIGO data, between 20 and 100 Hz, much of which was not explored in initial LIGO. The search was made possible by the computing power provided by the volunteers of the Einstein@Home project. We find no significant signal candidate and set the most stringent upper limits to date on the amplitude of gravitational wave signals from the target population, corresponding to a sensitivity depth of 48.7 …
Understanding And Developing Estimates Based On Practical Foundation Methods For Alaska's Discontinuous Permafrost Region, Paul P. Dennison
Understanding And Developing Estimates Based On Practical Foundation Methods For Alaska's Discontinuous Permafrost Region, Paul P. Dennison
Theses and Dissertations
This research uses a quantitative analysis to develop a family of curves and a calculator for potential foundation thresholds in the discontinuous permafrost region of Alaska. The United States Pacific Command (PACAF) is bolstering the region by advocating for the F-35, KC-46, and the newly proposed long-range bomber to be stationed in Alaska. These next generation aircrafts and warfighters will need new facilities and beddown plans to efficiently and effectively carry out their mission. The biggest obstacle in the region is permafrost; this unique polar phenomenon is found throughout the northern half of Alaska. Fairbanks in particular has multiple military …

On Improvised Music, Computational Creativity And Human-Becoming, Arto Artinian, Adam James Wilson
Publications and Research
Music improvisation is an act of human-becoming: of self-expression—an articulation of histories and memories that have molded its participants—and of exploration—a search for unimagined structures that break with the stale norms of majoritarian culture. Given that the former objective may inhibit the latter, we propose an integration of human musical improvisers and deliberately flawed creative software agents that are designed to catalyze the development of human-ratified minoritarian musical structures.

Structures Of Derived Graphs, Khawlah Hamad Alhulwah
Dissertations
One of the most familiar derived graphs are line graphs. The line graph L(G) of a graph G is the graph whose vertices are the edges of G where two vertices of L(G) are adjacent if and only if the corresponding edges of G are adjacent. One of the best- known results on the structure of line graphs deals with forbidden subgraphs by Beineke. A characterization of graphs whose line graph is Hamiltonian is due to Harary and Nash-Williams. Iterated line graphs of almost all connected graphs were shown to be Hamiltonian by Chartrand. The girth of a graph G …

The flow, transport, and reactivity of dissolved-phase constituents in an unconfined and shallow aquifer were characterized, in situ, by utilizing the single-well push-pull test method. In the first study, the re-oxidation/mobility of uranium, in the presence of nitrate oxidant, was shown to be mitigated by preferential oxidation/mobilization of solid-phase, reduced, sulfur-bearing species. These results indicated that establishing conditions conducive to uranium reduction and the formation of reduced sulfur-bearing species can increase the efficacy of sustained uranium reduction/immobility in the presence of re-mobilizing oxidants. In the second study, the analytical solution to describe the one-dimensional displacement of the center of …

Water Chemistry Dynamics In Four Vernal Pools In Maine, Usa, Lydia H. Kifner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vernal pools are small seasonal wetlands that are a common landscape feature that contribute to biodiversity in northeastern North American forests. However, even basic information about their biogeochemical functions, such as carbon cycling, is limited. Dissolved gas concentrations (CH4, CO2) and other water chemistry parameters were monitored weekly at the bottom and surface of four vernal pools in central and eastern Maine, USA, from April to August 2016. The vernal pools were supersaturated with respect to CH4 and CO2 at all sampling dates and locations. Concentrations of dissolved CH4 and CO2 ranged …

Robust Human Activity Recognition Using Lesser Number Of Wearable Sensors, Di Wang, Edwin Candinegara, Junhui Hou, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In recent years, research on the recognition of human physical activities solely using wearable sensors has received more and more attention. Compared to other types of sensory devices such as surveillance cameras, wearable sensors are preferred in most activity recognition applications mainly due to their non-intrusiveness and pervasiveness. However, many existing activity recognition applications or experiments using wearable sensors were conducted in the confined laboratory settings using specifically developed gadgets. These gadgets may be useful for a small group of people in certain specific scenarios, but probably will not gain their popularity because they introduce additional costs and they are …
Longitudinal Thermal And Solute Dynamics In Regulated Rivers, Muhammad Rezaul Haider
Longitudinal Thermal And Solute Dynamics In Regulated Rivers, Muhammad Rezaul Haider
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Dam releases increase river stage and can reverse groundwater movement into and out of the river. As the flood, thermal, and solute waves travel downstream in a regulated river, the size of the waves is anticipated to be affected both by river processes and exchanges with near river groundwater. This study established a modeling framework to quantify the influences of the groundwater exchanges on the temperatures and solute concentration dynamics along regulated rivers. The wave properties, volume of exchanges, conservative solute mass exchanges, and heat energy exchanges were calculated as a function of time and distance downstream. Results show that …

Short Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of 5-Chloro-7-Benzoyl 2,3-Dihydrobenzo[B]Furan -3-Carboxylic Acid(Brl-37959) And Its Analogs., Shamsul Arefin Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations
The synthesis of BRL-37959 has previously been reported. As an NSAID, the compound was tested for and found that it had very low gastric irritancy. Commercially available NSAIDs are non-selective COX inhibitors that enhance the risk of gastric, duodenal mucosal injury or erosions and ulcer problems as well as lead to nephrotoxicity. The COX-2 selective inhibitor Celecoxib (Celebrex) increases the risk of serious cardiovascular (CV) thrombotic events, myocardial infarction and stroke as well as increased nephrotoxicity. COX inhibitors are active against inflammation, pain, fever and different types of cancers. Considering the enormous potential benefits and side effects of non-selective COX …
Design And Implementation Of A Multi-Port Solid State Transformer For Flexible Der Integration, Mohammad Rashidi
Design And Implementation Of A Multi-Port Solid State Transformer For Flexible Der Integration, Mohammad Rashidi
Theses and Dissertations
Conventional power system includes four major sections, bulk generation, transmission network, distribution network, and loads. The main converter in the conventional electric grid is the low-frequency passive transformer providing galvanic isolation and voltage regulation for various voltage zones. In this configuration, small-scale renewable energy resources are generally connected to the power system at low voltage zones or inside microgrids.
Recent developments in the design of power electronic elements with higher voltage and power ratings and medium/high frequency enable making use of solid state transformer at different voltage levels in the distribution system and microgrid design. In this work, the concept …

The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is widely used to store, retrieve, and share digital documents. Recently, a form of Version Control System has been applied to the language, resulting in Version-Aware XML allowing for enhanced portability and scalability. While Version Control Systems are able to keep track of changes made to documents, we think that there is untapped potential in the technology. In this dissertation, we present novel ways of using Version Control System to enhance the security and performance of existing applications. We present a framework to maintain integrity in offline XML documents and provide non-repudiation security features that …
Mathematical Modeling Of Mixtures And Numerical Solution With Applications To Polymer Physics, John Timothy Cummings
Mathematical Modeling Of Mixtures And Numerical Solution With Applications To Polymer Physics, John Timothy Cummings
Doctoral Dissertations
We consider in this dissertation the mathematical modeling and simulation of a general diffuse interface mixture model based on the principles of energy dissipation. The model developed allows for a thermodynamically consistent description of systems with an arbitrary number of different components, each of which having perhaps differing densities. We also provide a mathematical description of processes which may allow components to source or sink into other components in a mass conserving, energy dissipating way, with the motivation of applying this model to phase transformation. Also included in the modeling is a unique set of thermodynamically consistent boundary conditions which …

Long-Range Interactions For Hydrogen: 6p-1s And 6p-2s Systems, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Chandra M. Adhikari
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The collisional shift of a transition constitutes an important systematic effect in highprecision spectroscopy. Accurate values for van der Waals interaction coefficients are required in order to evaluate the distance-dependent frequency shift. We here consider the interaction of excited hydrogen 6P atoms with metastable atoms (in the 2S state), in order to explore the influence of quasi-degenerate 2P and 6S states on the dipole-dipole interaction. The motivation for the calculation is given by planned high-precision measurements of the transition. Due to the presence of quasi-degenerate levels, one can use the non-retarded approximation for the interaction terms over wide distance ranges.

A Complete Coverage Algorithm For 3d Structural Inspection Using An Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Venkat Ramana Reddy Garlapati
A Complete Coverage Algorithm For 3d Structural Inspection Using An Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Venkat Ramana Reddy Garlapati
Student Work
This thesis presents a novel algorithm for complete coverage of three-dimensional structures to address the problem of autonomous structural inspection using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The proposed approach uses a technique of cellular decomposition based on Morse decomposition to decompose the 3D target structure into 2D coverable faces that are subsequently connected using a graph-based representation. We then use graph traversal techniques such as the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) to generate a flight coverage path through the decomposed faces for a UAV to completely cover the target structure, while reducing the coverage time and distance. To test the validity …
