Shear-Force Acoustic Near-Field Microscopy And Its Implementation In The Study Of Confined Mesoscopic Fluids, Theodore Alex Brockman
Shear-Force Acoustic Near-Field Microscopy And Its Implementation In The Study Of Confined Mesoscopic Fluids, Theodore Alex Brockman
Dissertations and Theses
The recently developed Shear-Force Acoustic Near-Field Microscope (SANM) is used to investigate the viscoelastic properties of a mesoscopic fluid layer confined between two trapping boundaries, one being a stationary substrate and the other the apex of a laterally oscillating tapered probe. Hardware improvements and evaluation of the SANM-probe robustness will be a major focus of this thesis. The investigation first discusses characterization and recent developments made to the microscope, including: modifications to the sensor head, conditioning of the Nano positioners electrical drive signal, and the assessment of the probe against eventual plastic deformation or compliance against interactions with samples (the …
Empirical Characterization Of Induced Seismicity In Alberta And Oklahoma, Mark Novakovic
Empirical Characterization Of Induced Seismicity In Alberta And Oklahoma, Mark Novakovic
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis characterizes ground motions from induced seismic events in Alberta and Oklahoma, following an overall methodology that uses ground-motion recordings to calibrate the parameters of a seismological model. This body of work is carried out in three related studies.
In the first study, we perform a preliminary evaluation of ground motions in Alberta using thousands of observations of natural, induced and blast events of magnitude 1 to 4, recorded on a newly-deployed regional seismograph array. We evaluate the applicability of a moment magnitude (M) estimation algorithm for the events and compare the observed ground motions with expectations …
Evolution Of Noble Gas And Water Isotopes Along The Regional Groundwater Flow Path Of The Konya Closed Basin, Turkey, N. Nur Ozyurt, C. Serdar Bayari
Evolution Of Noble Gas And Water Isotopes Along The Regional Groundwater Flow Path Of The Konya Closed Basin, Turkey, N. Nur Ozyurt, C. Serdar Bayari
International Journal of Speleology
Noble gas and water isotope compositions of regional groundwater were investigated along two transects in the Konya Closed Basin (KCB) of central Turkey. According to the 3He/4He versus Ne/He plot of samples, crust (up to 86%) and mantle (up to 26%) appear to be the primary and secondary sources of dissolved He in groundwater, respectively. After the beginning of both transects where the flow domain is confined, both 3He and 4He accumulate steadily in groundwater. Thereafter, the intermediate recharge from the surface in the unconfined part of regional flow system disrupts the steady accumulation trend …
Interpreting The Origin And Evolution Of ‘Karst’ Features From A Siliceous Hydrothermal Terrane: A Case Study From The Upper Geyser Basin In Yellowstone National Park, Usa, Kevin W. Blackwood, Lainee A. Sanders, Stacy I. Gantt-Blackwood
International Journal of Speleology
The Upper Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park occurs over a siliceous hydrothermal terrane containing numerous hot springs and geysers. The pool and vent-conduit geometries of these hydrothermal features share a resemblance to conventional karst features known from other rock types, suggesting karst processes could be responsible for their origin and/or evolution. Hypogene speleogenesis is a cave-forming process in which the formation of caves is decoupled from and occurs independently of surface recharge. The geologic setting for hypogene speleogenesis typically occurs at the distal end of regional groundwater systems wherein the hydrogeology is manifested by ascending fluids and/or by geochemical …
Elevated Calcium Levels In Kentucky Lake: A Possible Emerging Problem With An Invasive Species, Adam T. Martin
Elevated Calcium Levels In Kentucky Lake: A Possible Emerging Problem With An Invasive Species, Adam T. Martin
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are an exotic and invasive mollusk that have spread extensively through various rivers and lakes in the United States. These mussels are notorious for their “biofouling” capabilities costing billions of dollars in their removal from industrial, public, and power plant water supply lines. While having been present in the Tennessee River drainage with occasional small reproducing populations since the early 1990s, zebra mussels were never abundant or widespread. In 2017, high densities were found on structures and solid substrates throughout the lower portion of Kentucky Lake. Calcium is one of the essential elements that contributes …

Winding Around Non-Hermitian Singularities, Qi Zhong, Mercedeh Khajavikhan, Demetrios Christodoulides, Ramy El-Ganainy
Department of Physics Publications
Non-Hermitian singularities are ubiquitous in non-conservative open systems. Owing to their peculiar topology, they can remotely induce observable effects when encircled by closed trajectories in the parameter space. To date, a general formalism for describing this process beyond simple cases is still lacking. Here we develop a general approach for treating this problem by utilizing the power of permutation operators and representation theory. This in turn allows us to reveal a surprising result that has so far escaped attention: loops that enclose the same singularities in the parameter space starting from the same point and traveling in the same direction, …

The Contribution Of Atmospheric Particulate Matter To The Formation Of Cx3r-Type Disinfection By-Products In Rainwater During Chlorination, Mengtian Hou, Wenhai Chu, Feifei Wang, Yang Deng, Naiyun Gao, Di Zhang
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) can be scavenged by rainfall and contribute dissolved organic matter (DOM) to rainwater. Rainwater may serve as a part or the whole of drinking water sources, leading to the introduction of PM-derived DOM into drinking water. However, little information is available on the role of PM-derived DOM as a remarkable precursor of CX3R-type disinfection by-products (DBPs) in rainwater. In this study, samples were collected from ten occurrences of rainfall in Shanghai and batch experiments were executed to explore the contribution of PM-derived DOM to CX3R-type DBP formation in rainwater and to further understand some of unknowns …

Constrained K-Means Clustering Validation Study, Nicholas Mcdaniel, Stephen Burgess, Jeremy Evert
Student Research
Machine Learning (ML) is a growing topic within Computer Science with applications in many fields. One open problem in ML is data separation, or data clustering. Our project is a validation study of, “Constrained K-means Clustering with Background Knowledge" by Wagstaff et. al. Our data validates the finding by Wagstaff et. al., which shows that a modified k-means clustering approach can outperform more general unsupervised learning algorithms when some domain information about the problem is available. Our data suggests that k-means clustering augmented with domain information can be a time efficient means for segmenting data sets. Our validation study focused …

Validation Study Of Image Recognition Algorithms, Jacob Miller, Jeremy Evert
Student Research
Developments in machine learning in recent years have created opportunities that previously never existed. One such field with an explosion of opportunity is image recognition, also known as computer vision; the process in which a machine analyzes a digital image.
In order for a machine to ‘see’ as a human does, it must break down the image in a process called image segmentation. The way the machine goes about doing this is important, and many algorithms exist to determine just how a machine will decide to group the pixels in an image.
This research is a validation study of related …

Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of Core Stl14: An Early Pleistocene-To-Present Paleoclimate Archive From Stoneman Lake, Arizona, Spencer Staley
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
An 80 m lacustrine sediment core (STL14) from Stoneman Lake, Coconino County, Arizona, contains a sedimentary sequence of at least 1.5 million years, chronicling the complete history of basin infill and recording an extensive and high-resolution archive of climatic and hydrologic fluctuations. Lake levels in this small, internally-drained catchment are sensitive to changes in regional hydrologic balance. Consistent groundwater inflow, even during regionally dry episodes in the lake’s history, has prevented complete desiccation of the lake and sustained continuous lacustrine deposition except for one soil horizon. Multiproxy analysis of sedimentological indicators including lithofacies, color, wet bulk density, magnetic susceptibility, preliminary …

Use Of Sodium Dithionite For Groundwater Restoration Following Uranium In-Situ Recovery Mining At The Smith Ranch-Highalnd Site In Wyoming, Rose J. Harris
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Uranium in-situ recovery (ISR) is a subsurface aqueous mining technique used to extract uranium from sandstone roll-front deposits. After ISR mining, groundwater restoration is conducted to decrease concentrations of residual U(VI) and other contaminants leftover in the groundwater. Sodium dithionite, a strong chemical reductant, is being tested for use in groundwater restoration following uranium ISR at the Smith Ranch-Highland site in Wyoming. Sodium dithionite has been used to remediate chromium plumes by creating an in-situ permeable reactive barrier, but there has been no work using sodium dithionite for groundwater restoration following uranium ISR mining.

Bunching Coherent Curvature Radiation In Three-Dimensional Magnetic Field Geometry: Application To Pulsars And Fast Radio Bursts, Yuan-Pei Yang, Bing Zhang
Bunching Coherent Curvature Radiation In Three-Dimensional Magnetic Field Geometry: Application To Pulsars And Fast Radio Bursts, Yuan-Pei Yang, Bing Zhang
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
The extremely high brightness temperatures of pulsars and fast radio bursts (FRBs) require their radiation mechanisms to be coherent. Coherent curvature radiation from bunches has been long discussed as the mechanism for radio pulsars and recently for FRBs. Assuming that bunches are already generated in pulsar magnetospheres, we calculate the spectrum of coherent curvature radiation under a three-dimensional magnetic field geometry. Different from previous works assuming parallel trajectories and a monoenergetic energy distribution of electrons, we consider a bunch characterized by its length, curvature radius of the trajectory family, bunch opening angle, and electron energy distribution. We find that the …
Criticality Assessments For Improving Algorithmic Robustness, Thomas B. Jones
Criticality Assessments For Improving Algorithmic Robustness, Thomas B. Jones
Computer Science ETDs
Though computational models typically assume all program steps execute flawlessly, that does not imply all steps are equally important if a failure should occur. In the "Constrained Reliability Allocation" problem, sufficient resources are guaranteed for operations that prompt eventual program termination on failure, but those operations that only cause output errors are given a limited budget of some vital resource, insufficient to ensure correct operation for each of them.
In this dissertation, I present a novel representation of failures based on a combination of their timing and location combined with criticality assessments---a method used to predict the behavior of systems …
Post-Impact Light Vapor Incorporation During Lunar Formation Based On Triple Oxygen Isotopes, Erick J. Cano
Post-Impact Light Vapor Incorporation During Lunar Formation Based On Triple Oxygen Isotopes, Erick J. Cano
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Initial triple oxygen isotope analyses of lunar samples showed them to be indistinguishable from Earth, which led to numerous papers aimed at explaining the similarities. Recent high-precision analyses suggested either a subtle enrichment in Δ'17O or virtually no difference between the Earth and Moon. Herein we expand on previous studies by correlating the triple oxygen isotope measurements with different lunar lithologies. We show that these data can be explained by mixing between a light vapor phase, generated during the Giant Impact, and the residual material from the proto-lunar impactor ‘Theia’. There is a general decrease in Δ'17 …

Development Of Copper-Catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling Using Alkylboron Reagents And Nickel-Catalyzed Alkene Dicarbofunctionalization Reactions, Prakash Basnet
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the development of copper-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of alkylboron reagents for the first time. In the second part, we will discuss the development of novel nickel-catalyzed alkene dicarbofunctionalization reactions.
Part I. Cross-coupling reactions are versatile tools to form new carbon-carbon bonds and are widely used in the synthesis of various drug molecules, natural products and materials. However, these reactions are typically catalyzed by palladium, an expensive and rare metal which makes the reaction unsustainable in long-terms. Additionally, palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with alkylorganometallic reagents suffer from side reactions due to …
Mantle-To-Surface Neotectonic Connections In The San Juan Mountains Documented By 3he/4he, Co2 Flux Meaurements, And Hydrochemical Analysis Of The Geothermal System Near Rico, Colorado, Benjamin D. Holt
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
This project investigates the controls on geothermal fluids and their conduit systems which may account for high mantle helium components of geothermal fluids in intracratonic continental regions. The field laboratory is the western San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado where the structural setting and hydrochemistry of carbonic springs suggest potential connections among surface hot springs, fault networks, CO2 degassing, significant geothermal potential, young volcanic and plutonic rocks (< 7 Ma), and low-velocity upper mantle. The Rico Hot Springs have the highest mantle volatile component of any spring in Colorado with air-corrected values of 3He/4He = 5.88 RA indicating 73% mantle helium component. This near-MORB mantle helium value at Rico indicates that volatiles degassing from the mantle must be rapidly transmitted into the groundwater system along deep-seated faults such that accumulation of 4He from radiogenic crust has not swamped mantle-derived primordial 3He. Geologic features that are important for volatile transport and spring chemistry controls include a complex conduit system and fault network involving the Precambrian-cored Rico Dome, ~4 Ma intrusive rocks at Calico Peak and Priest Gulch, and a low-velocity upper mantle. Therefore, Rico and the surrounding region is a natural laboratory for studying geothermal fluid and mantle volatile pathways. Additional noble gas analyses and hydrochemistry data were gathered from regional springs and modeled via chemical geothermometers. New noble gas measurements from this study, paired with literature values, reveal highest air corrected 3He/4He at Rico (4.09-5.88 RA), Dunton (3.11-4.54 RA), Geyser Warm Spring (3.39 RA), and Paradise Warm Spring (2.72 RA). Water volume is dominated by meteoric fluids as shown by stable isotope data but hydrochemistry indicates high TDS, high CO2, and high He come from a geothermal fluid endmember. Variable mixing and water-rock interactions are processes that can explain chemistry variations between spatially proximal springs. CO2 flux measurements (up to 36.2 g/m2/hr) vary across structural features and demonstrate that the faults act as pathways for CO2 flux suggesting ongoing degassing. Overall, we find that local high mantle helium signature is localized directly above regions of lowest upper mantle velocity in the San Juan mantle anomaly and is derived from neotectonic mantle melts in those regions.

Reactive Pathways In The Bromobenzene-Ammonia Dimer Cation Radical: Evidence For A Roaming Halogen Radical, Silver Nyambo, Brandon Uhler, Lloyd Godfrey Muzangwa, Maxim Vadimovich Ivanov, Bradley K. Welch, Richard Dawes, Scott A. Reid
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Photoinitiated reactions in van der Waals complexes provide a means to examine reactive pathways from well-defined initial geometries. In recent work, we re-examined reactive pathways following resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI) of the chlorobenzene-ammonia (PhCl⋯NH3) dimer. The dimer cation radical reacts primarily via Cl atom loss, and additional channels corresponding to HCl and H atom loss were identified. The structure of the reactive complex was confirmed as an in-plane σ-type, and computational studies of the dimer cation radical potential energy landscape revealed two nearly isoenergetic arenium ion intermediates (or Wheland intermediates). The intermediate produced from ipso addition was not …
Imagining Across Disciplines For A Sustainable Future, Emily James
Imagining Across Disciplines For A Sustainable Future, Emily James
Writing Center Analysis Papers
At present, the words sustainable and sustainability tend to be associated with environmental issues. Yet, the word sustain comes from the Old French sostenier meaning, “hold up, bear; suffer, endure” and Latin’s sustinere that adds, “hold upright; furnish with means of support; undergo.” Latin’s sustinere can further be broken down into the elements sub and tenere, the root of which, ten, means, “to stretch” (Harper). This paper reflects upon the ways in which the concept of sustainability affects my role as a writing tutor and composition instructor as I seek to help students stretch their abilities to develop ideas …
Assessing The Cooling Effects Of Urban Vegetation On Urban Heat Mitigation In Selected U.S. Cities, Qiuyan Yu
Assessing The Cooling Effects Of Urban Vegetation On Urban Heat Mitigation In Selected U.S. Cities, Qiuyan Yu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Urban Heat Island (UHI) is a growing problem worldwide. Mitigation of UHI is necessary for cities to adapt to climate change and enhance sustainable development at a city scale. Cooling cities with urban vegetation management is a sustainable solution for urban heat mitigation. Urban vegetation influences urban microclimate through the shading effect, surface roughness, and evapotranspiration. The differences in horizontal and vertical structures of urban vegetation determine the shading effect, surface roughness, and evapotranspiration. Enhancing the cooling effect of urban vegetation requires a comprehensive understanding of how vegetation structure affects UHI. The effects of horizontal structure on land surface temperature …

Observing Change In Students’ Attitudes Towards Mathematics: Contrasting Quantitative And Qualitative Approaches, Wes Maciejewski
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
A student’s attitude towards mathematics affects how they learn and perform in mathematics. What exactly is meant by attitude and how this interacts with mathematics education is a current debate in the mathematics education research community. Regardless, practitioners often acknowledge a consideration of improving students’ attitudes towards mathematics in their course design. This creates an impetus to study attitudes towards mathematics in a way that lends itself to observing changes over a course in mathematics. The current study draws on two approaches to observing and measuring attitudes towards mathematics in an effort to contrast disparate approaches and deepen an investigation …

Research in undergraduate statistics education often centers on the introductory course required for a large percentage of college students. While acknowledging the diverse setting, audience, and purpose of introductory courses, existing research assumes that courses offered by different disciplines share the same goals and teaching practices. The purpose of this study is to examine the objectives for student outcomes and pedagogical delivery of introductory statistics courses in various academic departments to provide explicit evidence for this assumption. The American Statistical Association’s Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) are meant to apply to all introductory courses. The College …

Creating A Computational Tool To Simulate Vibration Control For Piezoelectric Devices, Ahmet Ozkan Ozer, Emma J. Moore
Posters-at-the-Capitol
Piezoelectric materials have the unique ability to convert electrical energy to mechanical vibrations and vice versa. This project takes a stab to develop a reliable computational tool to simulate the vibration control of a novel “partial differential equation” model for a piezoelectric device, which is designed by integrating electric conducting piezoelectric layers constraining a viscoelastic layer to provide an active and lightweight intelligent structure. Controlling unwanted vibrations on piezoelectric devices (or harvesting energy from ambient vibrations) through piezoelectric layers has been the major focus in cutting-edge engineering applications such as ultrasonic welders and inchworms. The corresponding mathematical models for piezoelectric …
