Development, Characterization And Application Of Multi-Detector Flow Injection Systems Based On A Serial Flow Configuration For Simultaneous Multianalyte Determination, Aisha Rashed Al Hameidi Yammahi
Chemistry Theses
Oxidase enzymes have been used successfully in the analysis of several biochemical species such as glucose, lactate, pyruvate, creatine, creatinine, amino acids, cholesterol and sialic acid, by generating - in a single or consecutive reaction -hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) as a signal molecule which is commonly detected amperometrically. Some approaches have been also reported to use more than one enzyme in a given system to achieve multi-analyte determination. This study aims to evaluate a novel approach for n-analyte determination based on n-enzyme reactors (each is loaded with one or more oxidase enzyme) as well as n-1 catalase immobilized …

Development And Characterization Of A Portable Apparatus For Continuous Measurement Of Hydrogen Sulfide In Gas Streams, Bashar Yousef Abu Hattab
Chemistry Theses
A novel detection scheme for the hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was described and patented recently by researchers at UAE University. This detection scheme and the described bench-scale analyzer offered the advantage of low-cost solution for real-time monitoring of percentile levels of H₂S with excellent signal stability. However, this previous work suffered from two major limitations, which are the relatively low sensitivity and slow response time, which mainly hindered its commercial utilization. Therefore, the aims of the present work were to enhance the detection sensitivity, decrease the response time, and develop a portable prototype of the H₂S analyzer based on the improved …

Development Of Hydroxyapatite-Polymer Sorbents For The Removal Of Heavy Metal Ions From Waste Waters, Eleanora Charnetskaya
Development Of Hydroxyapatite-Polymer Sorbents For The Removal Of Heavy Metal Ions From Waste Waters, Eleanora Charnetskaya
Chemistry Theses
Water pollution due to the presence of soluble metal ions is one of the greatest challenges to environmental scientists. Different methods have been explored to the removal of these soluble ions. Among these methods, elimination by sorption into/onto solid materials has been considered one of the successful approaches. Sorbent materials usually chemically interact with soluble ions and eliminate them by bond formation between the ions and the sorbent molecules. On the other hand, soluble ions can be also exchanged with inorganic sorbents in which other environmentally friendly ions can exchange with the soluble metal ions. In the current study, the …

Sequestration Effect On The Open-Cyclic Switchable Property Of Warfarin Induced By Cyclodextrin: Time-Resolved Fluoresence Study, Naji Saleh Ahmed Al-Dubaili
Chemistry Theses
In this work, the photophysical properties of the fluorescent anticoagulant drug warfarin (W) were examined in water and inside methyl-β-cyclodextrins (Me-β- CD) through absorption and time-resolved fluorescence measurements at pH 3 and 9 and upon the selective excitation of different isomers of warfarin at 280 and 320 nm. The values of binding constants (2.9 × 103 M–1 and 4.2 × 102 M–1 for protonated and deprotonated forms, respectively) were extracted from the spectrophotometric data. Both absorption and time-resolved fluorescence results established that the interior of the macromolecular host binds preferentially the open protonated form, red shifts the maximum of its …

Investigation On The Rons And Bactericidal Effects Induced By He + O2 Cold Plasma Jets: In Open Air And In An Airtight Chamber, Han Xu, Dingxin Liu, Weitao Wang, Zhijie Liu, Li Guo, Mingzhe Rong, Michael G. Kong
Bioelectrics Publications
He + O2 plasma jets in open air and in an airtight chamber are comparatively studied, with respect to their production of gaseous/aqueous reactive species and their antibacterial effects. Under the same discharge power, the plasma jet in open air has higher densities of gaseous reactive species and a higher concentration of aqueous H2O2 but lower concentrations of aqueous OH and O2-. In addition, the increase in the O2 ratio in He in both plasma jets causes a linear decrease in the population of gaseous reactive species, except for O(3p5P) …

Gathering information about forest variables is an expensive and arduous activity. As such, directly collecting the data required to produce high-resolution maps over large spatial domains is infeasible. Next generation collection initiatives of remotely sensed Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data are specifically aimed at producing complete-coverage maps over large spatial domains. Given that LiDAR data and forest characteristics are often strongly correlated, it is possible to make use of the former to model, predict, and map forest variables over regions of interest. This entails dealing with the high-dimensional (∼102 ) spatially dependent LiDAR outcomes over a large number …
Mountaintop Neutrino Detection: A Nu(Tau) Concept, Caroline E. Paciaroni
Mountaintop Neutrino Detection: A Nu(Tau) Concept, Caroline E. Paciaroni
Physics
High-energy neutrinos traveling from the distant universe produce detectable signals at radio frequencies after interacting with the earth or its atmosphere. This is the principle behind a new experiment, the BEamforming Elevated Array for COsmogenic Neutrinos, or BEACON. BEACON will be a high altitude array of antennas that is sensitive to up-going tau neutrinos ($\nu_{\tau}$). These elementary particles serve as sources of information about the extraordinarily high energy events in the universe that create them, and also the laws of particle physics that govern their behavior. This report details the construction of a transient detector used to characterize site locations …
Studying The Potential Of The [Oii] Emission Line As A Surrogate For Stellar Velocity Dispersion In Active Galactic Nuclei, Edward F. Donohue
Studying The Potential Of The [Oii] Emission Line As A Surrogate For Stellar Velocity Dispersion In Active Galactic Nuclei, Edward F. Donohue
Physics
We study the emission profiles of 80 active galaxies to find a surrogate for stellar velocity dispersion. We focus on the width of the emission line of once ionized oxygen, [OII], and compare our results to previous work that used [OIII]. In previous research, [OIII] was found to be a good candidate for a surrogate for stellar velocity dispersion, but analysis of the line was complicated by the presence of wings caused by gas infall and outflow in the region. Emission lines with lower ionization levels, like [OII], are known to have less artificial line-broadening from wings. The study of …

Validation Of The Thermal Work Limit (Twl) Against Known Heat Stress Exposures, Danielle L. Kapanowski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Workers are exposed to stressful thermal work environments in multiple industries every day. Methods for assessing heat stress often struggle to balance productivity without compromising the health of the workers. The Thermal Work Limit (TWL) is a method that has been adopted in areas outside of the United States as a viable method for heat assessment that combines health with productivity. TWL recommends a maximum metabolic rate for a given set of environmental conditions, clothing ensemble and acclimatization state. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the validity of the TWL against a set of heat stress data known …

© 2018 International Literacy Association Writing is an important mode of thinking and learning for elementary students. Consistent efforts have been made to encourage discipline-specific writing, yet defining qualities of elementary mathematical writing have historically been underdeveloped. This article offers educators a new framework that conceptualizes mathematical writing as writing to reason and to communicate mathematically. Specifically, the framework defines four types of elementary mathematical writing: exploratory, informative/explanatory, argumentative, and mathematically creative. The authors explain and explore these types and their associated purposes through classroom vignettes. Informed by existing practices in mathematics and writing, strategies are offered to support teachers …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Formal specifications are important but often unavailable. Furthermore, writing these specifications is time-consuming and requires skills from developers. In this work, we present Deep Specification Miner (DSM), an automated tool that applies deep learning to mine finite-state automaton (FSA) based specifications. DSM accepts as input a set of execution traces to train a Recurrent Neural Network Language Model (RNNLM). From the input traces, DSM creates a Prefix Tree Acceptor (PTA) and leverages the inferred RNNLM to extract many features. These features are then forwarded to clustering algorithms for merging similar automata states in the PTA for assembling a number of …

Isar Autofocus Imaging Algorithm For Maneuvering Targets Based On Phase Retrieval And Gabor Wavelet Transform, Hongyin Shi, Ting Yang, Zhijun Qiao
School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The imaging issue of a rotating maneuvering target with a large angle and a high translational speed has been a challenging problem in the area of inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) autofocus imaging, in particular when the target has both radial and angular accelerations. In this paper, on the basis of the phase retrieval algorithm and the Gabor wavelet transform (GWT), we propose a new method for phase error correction. The approach first performs the range compression on ISAR raw data to obtain range profiles, and then carries out the GWT transform as the time-frequency analysis tool for the rotational …

Child-Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous Technologies, And Big Data, Jerry Alan Fails
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The children's technology landscape is changing quickly. The ubiquity of interactive technologies means children can access them just about anytime, anywhere. At the same time, these technologies constantly collect data from and about children, bringing them into the age of big data, voluntarily or not. These developments have the potential to significantly change children's relationship to technology and the long-term impact of technology use. To discuss these changes, the child-computer-interaction community held a special interest group (SIG) meeting during the CHI 2018 conference.

Joint Representation Learning Of Cross-Lingual Words And Entities Via Attentive Distant Supervision, Yixin Cao, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li, Zhiyuan Liu, Chengjiang Li, Xu Chen, Tiansi Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Joint representation learning of words and entities benefits many NLP tasks, but has not been well explored in cross-lingual settings. In this paper, we propose a novel method for joint representation learning of cross-lingual words and entities. It captures mutually complementary knowledge, and enables cross-lingual inferences among knowledge bases and texts. Our method does not require parallel corpora, and automatically generates comparable data via distant supervision using multi-lingual knowledge bases. We utilize two types of regularizers to align cross-lingual words and entities, and design knowledge attention and crosslingual attention to further reduce noises. We conducted a series of experiments on …

Learning Generalized Video Memory For Automatic Video Captioning, Poo-Hee Chang, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent video captioning methods have made great progress by deep learning approaches with convolutional neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN). While there are techniques that use memory networks for sentence decoding, few work has leveraged on the memory component to learn and generalize the temporal structure in video. In this paper, we propose a new method, namely Generalized Video Memory (GVM), utilizing a memory model for enhancing video description generation. Based on a class of self-organizing neural networks, GVM’s model is able to learn new video features incrementally. The learned generalized memory is further exploited to decode the …

Social networks generate a massive amount of interaction data among users in the form of streams. To facilitate social network users to consume the continuously generated stream and identify preferred viral social contents, we present a real-time monitoring system called River to track a small set of influential social contents from high-speed streams in this demo. River has four novel features which distinguish itself from existing social monitoring systems: (1) River extracts a set of contents which collectively have the most significant influence coverage while reducing the influence overlaps; (2) River is topic-based and monitors the contents which are relevant …

We study the important problem of user alignment in e-commerce: to predict whether two online user identities that access an e-commerce site from different devices belong to one real-world person. As input, we have a set of user activity logs from Taobao and some labeled user identity linkages. User activity logs can be modeled using a heterogeneous interaction graph (HIG), and subsequently the user alignment task can be formulated as a semi-supervised HIG embedding problem. HIG embedding is challenging for two reasons: its heterogeneous nature and the presence of edge features. To address the challenges, we propose a novel Heterogeneous …

In 2007, the Deckard paper was published at ICSE. Since its publication, it has led to much follow-up research and applications. The paper made two core contributions: a novel vector embedding of structured code for fast similarity detection, and an application of the embedding for clone detection, resulting in the Deckard tool. The vector embedding is simple and easy to adapt. Similar code detection is also fundamental for a range of classical and emerging problems in software engineering, security, and computer science education (e.g., code reuse, refactoring, porting, translation, synthesis, program repair, malware detection, and feedback generation). Both have buttressed …

Is There Space For Violence?: A Data-Driven Approach To The Exploration Of Spatial-Temporal Dimensions Of Conflict, Tin Seong Kam, Vincent Zhi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With recent increases in incidences of political violence globally, the world has now become more uncertain and less predictable. Of particular concern is the case of violence against civilians, who are often caught in the crossfire between armed state or non-state actors. Classical methods of studying political violence and international relations need to be updated. Adopting the use of data analytic tools and techniques of studying big data would enable academics and policy makers to make sense of a rapidly changing world.

Technical debt (TD) is a metaphor to describe the trade-off between short-term workarounds and long-term goals in software development. Despite being widely used to explain technical issues in business terms, industry and academia still lack a proper way to manage technical debt while explicitly considering business priorities. In this paper, we report on a multiple-case study of how two big software development companies handle technical debt items, and we show how taking the business perspective into account can improve the decision making for the prioritization of technical debt. We also propose a first step toward an approach that uses business …
